The story of the tournament has to be Clyde Bowles. I’ve gotten to knowClyde over the years from deliveries, playing in tournaments and showingup at tournaments. Clyde is the perfect example of a gentleman with hisdown home, laid back, easy going demeanor. Don’t let that fool you whenit comes to shooting pool. He’s not tall, dashing or have the flash of manyof the players. He doesn’t draw the ball three cushions around the table toget position, he just makes ball with consistency. Make no mistake he canmake shots that you and I may not. I think finishing second in Masters after
being on the point says it all. I talked to Clyde after he had won the pointand he was waiting for Glenn Atwell and Stan Tourangeau to battle it out,Clyde said that he had originally submitted to be in Seniors and he went toMasters. It was good to see a lot of my old friends that I have made over the yearsas well as new one that I have reacquainted myself with. It is alwaysgratifying to meet new players and hear their opinions about “The Break”.
BCA Leagues SOLDIn an exclusive interview with Mark Griffin of Diamond Tables, he confirmedthe rumor that he had made an agreement with the Billiard Congress ofAmerica to purchase the BCA League System. The deal is not official untilthe board approves it next week. Mark said that the leagues will remain thesame. There will be no changes for the players. It will not become afranchise league and the fees will remain the same. The BCA Nationals inLas Vegas will also remain the same. They will still be run by Gary Bensonfor the next two years, at least.Mark does have a lot of ideas on how to enhance the league and createmore events for the players. He’s thinking of reviving the National 9-BallTournament that used to be held in Red Wing, Minnesota and maybe evenbring back the All American Tour. Mark is player oriented and wants to havean advisory board comprised of industry leaders and league officials tohelp staff the new league. He is moving his offices to Las Vegas, whichseems like a more appropriate place for them.Mark would like to work together so that the players get a better deal. Hewants to work in conjunction with the other leagues and tours so that thereare not conflicts in scheduling. He is very enthusiastic about what can andshould happen to make the league stronger and promote pool. He has bigplans in the works that he hopes to make a reality. The new website shouldbe up and running by April 1st and will be changing daily so check it out atwww.bcapoolleague.com. You can keep apprised of the changes goingon by checking online.Although Mark didn’t want the BCA to sell the leagues, when it becameapparent that the leagues were going to be offered for sale, he stepped upto take charge. We will have more information in next month’s issue. The Heart and Soul of theTournament “THE REFEREES”
I think one of the most important parts of the tournament, and you mayeven call them the “heart and soul”, are the referees. They may not alwaysmake the call that you would like but they are trained and conduct themselvesin a professional manner. Next time you see someone refing thank themfor their time and dedication to a mostly thankless endeavor.See you again in November!

Integrity in PoolDishonesty in Ranking League Operators & Division Reps
by: Jean Bartholomew, Adele Evans and Brenda Cannon
According to Webster’s dictionary, the word novice comes from novusmeaning “new” and is defined as a beginner.
This letter is not about how to rank players, it is inspired by the few playerswho are placed (or place themselves) in a lower level tournament bracketthan they should be. Let’s call it what it is—”sand bagging”. It has happenedrepeatedly with individuals and even some teams. What should be done?To be fair, I must take note that most of the League Operators involved inour Western BCA operations try to rate their players fairly and honestly. This letter is not meant for them. It is very difficult to monitor and rate poolplayers. Personally, I am not convinced there is decent system out thereto help do it. There are too many variables such as the type of equipmentplayed on, thecaliber of thecompetition playedagainst, etc. Once again at thisyear’s BCA 8- ballevent, there wereseveral playersplaying in lowerdivisions wherethey did notbelong. This wasespecially true inthe NoviceDivision. OneL e a g u erepresen ta t i veeven signed off fora player to play inthe Novice Bracket. This was done under the pretense that the player hadonly a couple of years of experience. The problem is that the couple ofyears consisted of playing continually with lots of practice time. Some players advance more quickly than others, some take lessons, somepractice day and night. So only considering when a player started playingis a very poor excuse to sign off on a novice ranking. To top it off, this
“novice” placed high in the openscotch event. How disappointingfor the true novice players to seesomeone like this walk up to theirtable in the singles. Finally, therewas the glaring inequity of the useof a “jump cue”.The word “Novice” meansbeginner! There are some pro’swho don’t pull out jump cues. Iwonder how many of this player’sopponents used one! There areno other words except unfair todescribe this behavior. It is grosslyunjust to all of the beginners whoentered the tournament in theNovice division believing theywould have a chance againstplayers of the same skill level. Here is another example thatoccurred during the last BCA 8-ball
regional tournament. I was told that a league operator approached anindividual (who has played pool for many years and is ranked high in theAPA) to join the league on the pretense that the player could sign up as aNovice! It seems some are under the impression that just because someone isnew to BCA play, they can start as a Novice—even if they are NOT abeginning player. This is just not true. A true novice is a player with beginningskill levels and not much tournament experience. The novice ranking ismeant to give players theopportunity to playagainst others of thesame ability gaining bothexperience andconfidence. It would beshame if the Novicedivision had to be droppedfrom this venue becauseof such blatant abuse ofthe system. Please try to be honestand fair when rating aplayer. It is NOT a featherin your cap or your leagueto have the top winners in

I have just returned from anexciting week of top-notch poolplaying by around a thousandWBPPA members. It was agreat week, with the newdivisions to this tournamentbeing declared a hugesuccess. The large Opendivision was split into an OpenA and Open B and a Men’sSeniors and Women’s Seniorswere new. Everyone seemedto like this change. There were some great
surprises too. Clyde Bowles, a well known player of the Seattle area wonthe point in the Men’s Master Division, by beatingGlenn Atwell. Quite a feat. Clyde told me that
was his early birthdaypresent. (71 yearsyoung). Since Glennhas been a winner ofthis event severaltimes, it changed thescenario of thecompetition in thiscategory, considerably.Glenn then met StanTourangeau who puthim out at the 3rd placeposition. Stan andGlenn have met manytimes in competitionand the results arealways anyone’s guessand come down to asuper shot, or lucky roll,
to determine who wins.Stan went on to play Clydefor all the marbles. Clydetold me he got very tiredand Stan steamrolledthrough the two setsneeded to win thechampionship. Make nomistake, Stan playedalmost flawlessly anddeserved to win.Congratulations to bothStan and Clyde. The Women’s Master Div.featured Jackie Fitchner

any particular division playing for you if it is done so dishonestly. In actuality, you are performing a disservice to the player also. The pool community is
not large and in general, players already knowwho should be rankednovice and who shouldnot. By allowing theseplayers to sand-bag,they end up losing therespect of their peers. They may not realizethis will happen and inthe end is it worth themoney to them? Is itworth the loss ofrespect to you? All thatends up happening isthe player, the divisionrep, the leagueoperator, and theassociation all look bad.Pool is about integrity
and character. Think of theplayers you respect the most; dothey do the right thing during amatch? Isn’t it their characterthat you admire the most aboutthem? Think about the playersyou don’t respect, the ones whowon’t call fouls on themselvesand are just in it for the money. HOW DO YOU WANTPEOPLE TO THINK OF YOU?

John Horsfall
Shotze’s Spring ClassicFrom: Ford
I thought that our last tournament had several of the world class players init, but this one showed that it really never ends. Players from California,Canada and all parts of Washington came together to get a piece of the$3655 paid out in prize money for this two day event.John Horsfall, who has won tournaments here in the past, showed that heis a player to be reckonedwith when you are hisopponent. His Saturdaymatches were Rodger A(7-2) and Anthony W (7-4).Sunday’s matches wereMarlon (8-3), a difficult lossto Rich Geiler (6-8), a greatmatch against Dan Louie(7-4), Randy C (7-5), andthen revenge against RichGeiler (8-3).Bryce was in the area, from California, anddecided to join our littlegroup for a weekend of upsand downs. He is afabulous player to watch.Young and upcoming anddefinitely one to watch in the future. His matches on Saturday were BenDutton (7-6), Jeff Jeminize (7-2), and Phil Wilson (7-5). Sunday found himstill having to win some difficult matches to try to take 1st place in thistournament. Mike Vidas (8-7), Randy C (8-5) and winning the point matchagainst Rich Geiler (8-7).Watching John and Bryce in the final match was like seeing the teacherand student going against each other for the first time. Bryce has all thepotential of being one of the best, but he was up against one who has beenthere for many years and has that long time experience already in place. Itwill be fun to see them going heads up in the years to come. For thespectators, it really was one to see. When either player made a great shot,it was good to see that the spectators let each of them know it. John beingjust that one step ahead of the game came out on top (9-5). CongratulationsJohn.Once again, and as always, the players need to take time out to thankDarryl, owner of Shotze’s for a great place for a tournament, and also forthe extraordinary staff that is always on hand to make the players weekendas easy as possible. Without those two elements, tournaments of thiscaliber in this area wouldn’t be.Final results are as follows:1st $1000/$536 John Horsfall2nd $655/$402 Bryce A3rd $400/$268 Rich Geiler4th $300/$134 Randy C5-6 $225 Dan Louie, Stan T7-8 $175 Simon Pickering, Brady G9-12 $125 J. D., Marlon, Mike Dooley, Mike VidasThanks to each and everyone of you for participating in this tournamentand hopefully we will see you in May – for the Memorial WeekendTournament – 64 players - $50.

This month’s artistic shot is from the jump Discipline and has a Degree ofDifficulty, (DOD) of 7. If you understand the principles of this jump shotand are able to execute it, you’re on your way to winning a few games thatyour opponents never thought you would. This type of shot could veryeasily come up in an eight ball game.To set this shot up, place row of three balls as per diagram with the centerball one half diamond segment out from the long rail and straight in line
with the first diamond to the left of pocket B. One object ball is to the left ofthe center ball and one ball is to the right of the center ball with one inchspacing between all balls. The object ball on the left is the E ball. The cueball is in hand, anywhere or as the diagram suggests. The object of thisshot is to shoot the cue ball into E ball with a jump stroke. The E ball willjump into the cushion and rebound back over the other balls and be pocketedin E pocket. When executing this shot the E ball can’t contact any otherball and the cue ball can’t jump off the table. A scratch is allowed. Here area few helpful hints on executing this great shot. I place my cue ball aboutthree and a half balls away from the E ball. Next I line up the cue ball andthe E ball the same as the diagram shows. Your cue should be elevatedabout 20 to 25 degrees. Seeing this is a jump shot don’t stroke but snapthe execution of the shot with a moderate speed. Best of luck. If a similarshot like this one came up in a game of eight ball and E ball was the eight,I bet your opponents jaw would drop to the floor if you pulled this shot off.Next months artistic shot will be from the Masse Discipline and has a(DOD) of 8!

In my last column, I wentinto a little detail onaiming half-ball shots.Just aim the middle ofthe cue stick and cue balldirectly to the edge of theobject ball, and you getclose to a 30-degree cut. This month I’m going tolet you in on a first secretabout the half-ball shotthat is useful in positionplay — what happenswhen you hit the shotwith good draw.If you’ve studied thegame at all, you know
that the cue ball leaves the object ball at a rightangle to the path of the object ball — along thetangent or kiss line. Of course, if the cue ballhas follow or draw when it hits the object ball, the path will be bent away from that perpendicularpath, forward for follow and backward for draw. The useful secret of the half-ball with draw shotis that the cue ball will end up travelingperpendicular to its own original path. This isillustrated in Diagram 1. The shot can be veryuseful, but it requires some care if you want it towork right.First, you have to have what might be called“perfect draw” on the cue ball. For most players, this is as far below center as they can hit withoutmiscuing. Also, the cue ball must be relativelyclose to the object ball, or too much draw will belost on the cloth on the way to the object ball. You need to be careful to get an accurate hit on
the object ball. The two lightly-shaded “ghostballs” in the diagram will aid in your set up. If allthree balls are frozen, with the two helpers parallelto the long rail, and the lower helper and theobject ball pointing to the pocket, you are setup for a half-ball shot. Remove the helpers, and point your stick at the edgeof the object ball.Note that there is a curvedsection of the path of the cue ball just as itleaves the object ball, before the curve finishes. After the draw has been spent, the cue ball willcontinue in a straight path. If you shoot softly, the curve will not be as wide. If you shootharder, the curve will be larger, and in the shotshown, it might touch the side cushion beforeit straightens out to run parallel to the cushion.Unfortunately, the sharpness of the curve alsodepends on how clean the cloth and ball are.In the position shown, you should be able topocket the nine ball within five tries. Be carefulabout your setup, and especially be carefulabout how much draw you are using and howhard you hit the cue ball. The concept of this shot is not just useful for aprecise half-ball hit. If you find yourself in asimilar situation, but with a slightly fuller hitrequired to pocket the ball, you know that itshould be possible to pull the cue ball backfrom the right angle. Try moving the cue balljust half a ball down, so the shot is a little fuller, and see if you can pull the cue ball back to themiddle of the end cushion with a thicker hit.You can adjust the fuller hit back to the right-angle line by taking a little draw off the cue ball. How much? That’s why practice is necessary
with this or any system — you must develop yourfeel for the shot. If the cue ball is further back,

Joe Jacques
In Memory Of Joe JacquesBy Curt Synness
The late Joe Jacques (1929-2004) was a world-class pool player. Hemastered all the games on the big table, ran over 90 consecutive balls at14.1 straight pool and knew more than a hundred trick and skill shots. Joepossessed one of the most powerful strokes that I’ve ever seen, and couldmake the cue ball things thatastonished the nation’s greatestpool players.
The epitome of amisspent youth, Joe startedracking balls in the local pool hallin his hometown in Maine at theage of six. He dropped out ofschool in the eighth grade andstarted playing pool 14-15 hoursa day. Within two years, he wasa player for the house, and by thetime he was 16 he was making aliving as a road player up anddown the East Coast, until heexperienced a fate similar to thatof Fast Eddie Felson in “TheHustler.”
After beating a big loggerout of his paycheck in Portland,Maine, several locals took Joe outin the alley attempted to cut histhroat. The teenager managed toget away and made it to the busstation, narrowly escaping with his life. He then signed up for the Air Forceat the age of 17 and did not pick up a cue stick again for 10 years.
His military service took him to Great Falls, where Joe met hisfuture wife, Joanne. Pool tournaments and leagues were extremely rare inMontana in the 1960s, but whenever he did participate, he usually won.And although it has not been documented, Joe’s son, Lenny Jacques, saidhis dad once won $50,000 and a bar in a game. But what is a known factis that when he lost one of his best friends over a bet, he quit gamblingforever.
“The only thing you prove when you play for money,” he used tosay, “is that you like to gamble.”
After retiring from the service, Joe came to Helena, where heenjoyed shooting pool for fun, giving demonstrations and lessons, and justshowing off. When I first saw him at an exhibition in 1973, theestablishment’s owner introduced him to the crowd with, “Joe doesn’t justmake the cue ball talk. He makes it dance.” He was an encouraginginstructor to anyone interested in learning the game, and an entertainingshowman with dozens of dazzling skill and trick shots. Joe was a lot of funto play with – he always kept you laughing. I can still hear him barking outthose one-liners in that thick, staccato New England accent of his; “You’reso ugly, if you sat on a tombstone you’d hatch a ghost!” or “Those are theLee sisters…Ug-Lee and Home-Lee.”
I’ll always remember watching Helena’s two masters, Joe Jacquesand Eddy Williams, playing three-cushion billiards at the old Red Carpetpool hall, and I’ll never forget that dynamite stroke of his. Joe performedexhibitions with seven world champions: Willie Mosconi, Jimmy Caras,“Machine Gun” Lou Butera, “Cowboy” Jimmy Moore, Luther “Wimpy”Lassiter, Joe Balsis and Jim Rempe. Whenever his buddy Rempe cameto town, Jacques would take him out fly-fishing. Once at a Corner Pocketexhibition, Jacques showed Rempe a shot he’d never seen before, whichcaused the multiple world champ to exclaim, “That was not a trick shot, folks. That was pure skill and talent.”
Curt Synness is a longtime pool player and part time sports writerfor the Helena Independent Record.

Right now you are getting ready for Easterand I just finished St. Patrick’s Day, also mybirthday. With a name like Patrick Sheehanyou can guess that there should have been alot of celebrating, but it has been the busiesttwo weeks of my life. Mike McMennamin hasbeen adding pool tables to his locations andwith one week notice, we had two 46 x 92Regulation tables to get ready for the StPatrick’s Day celebration at the Oregon Hotelin McMinnville.
Since I start from scratch on each order, it took a bit of hustle to completethem and cut the parts for the Greenway Plaza on Shols Ferry Road andthe McMennamin’s at SW Murray and Allen. They will go out March 25th.Mike has bar boxes in the last two locations which he will be replacing withreal pool tables. The tables Mike likes are the Brunswick Wilmington and with a few changes,The Sheehan Regent becomes a Wilmington. We did the tables in quartersawn oak and with Orange shellac and dark past filler in the grain. Theylook like they were made in 1905. We installed them on March 15th in theParagon Room at the Oregon Hotel in McMinnville and it is one of the mostattractive billiard rooms Mike has in his collection. We used the Granitocloth in English Green and as I walked into the Paragon Room the followingSunday to check on the settling of the tables, I could see why Mike likesthat color so well. Now we have to make some dining table tops for thereare occasions when 30 to 40 people will meet for breakfast in that room.It is now 5:00 am Monday morning and I am a zombie. Last month wecovered the tables at the Buffalo Gap and at 4:00 am today, we moved thetables for new carpet and I am waiting for carpet people to finish puttingthe carpet down. As I mentioned my recent birthday was number 66 and
these irregular hours are tough on an old fart, but you do things for specialcustomers. The Buffalo Gap is one of those special places. Jack Stutzman, always calls on us and has for the past um-teen years. He has a newmanager, Jared Mannis, a pool player for many years and together theyhave made so many outstanding improvements. So if you haven’t been tothe Buffalo Gap for a while plan on being there. The food is great; the helpoutstanding and good times are always had there. The pool tables arealways clean, with the addition of Quick-Clean along with regular brushingand vacuuming. The cloth is spotless now with the new carpet the room isvery neat and tidy.Upstairs in the attic they have always had live music six nights a week withno cover. They have added a 50” flat screen TV and 4 monitored TV’s withDolby Digital Surround Sound. Years ago the attic was a brothel. I told youthere are a lot of changes. If you haven’t seen “The Passion of the Christ” I recommend it. It’s the firstmovie I’ve seen in a theater since “The Color of Money”. My best friendowns the Moreland Theater and invited me on the premier night. With thesound system and Gibson’s use of darkness to light, I was mesmerized. Ittook me ten minutes to stand up after the end. Talk about weak in theknees. The movie will get you ready for Good Friday and Easter Sunday.

WORLD FINGERPOOL
CHAMPIONSHIPS
Three Little Monkeys
2nd Place John Boykin
3rd Place Maury Fogel
1st Sherman Card
7th Annual
Sat Feb. 7th the day of the qualifying rounds for the 04 World FingerpoolChampionships sponsored by the Longhorn Saloon in Arlington Wa.Fingerpool is played using your finger instead of a stick, and you musthave ballast. Tournament play is straight eight; call your pocket, the samerules as with a stick.
It was 3 o’clock and the players gathered to pull peas for positions and tosee whom their opponents were going to be. All players knew that one winwould get them into thefinals on Sunday for ashot at the title. Thepressure of qualifyingcould be seen in theplayers before each oftheir shots. Sixteenplayers started todayconsisting of female, rookies, and veteranplayers. Seasonedspectators joined theplayers in the fine art oftalking trash, whilenew spectatorswatched inbewilderment. By 9 o’clock 8 players had qualified for the finals. Qualifierrounds are one game; you must win to get into the finals. Sunday Feb. 8th the day of the finals for the 04 World FingerpoolChampionships. From the qualifying rounds 8 players advanced into thefinals. The players seemed a little more relaxed today knowing that double
elimination is played in thefinal rounds of competition. The games started about 3o’clock and ended around 9o’clock with a new worldchampion. Sherman “TheProfessor” Card took 1st.place. This makes the 3rd
time his name appears on theWorld Champion FingerpoolCup. While JB “Grandma”Boykin took 2nd and MauryFogel took 3rd. Unfortunatelythis year the ballast rule was
exercised. Maury Fogel shooting at the eight ball temporarily set his ballastdown and shot. Unfortunately he made it (ouch). In fingerpool you musthave a beverage in your non-shooting hand this is what’scalled ballast. If you make aball without ballast you loseyour next shot. And if youmake the eight ball withoutballast you lose the game. The World FingerpoolOrganization (WFO) wouldlike to thank everyone whosupported and participated inThe World Championships. The WFO would also like tothank Loretta & Maury Fogel, the owners of the Longhorn Saloon for their continuous support. For moreinfo about Fingerpool contact Longhorn Saloon at 360 653-4760.

RENO, NV - March 4-7, 2004Cliff Joyner swept both divisions of the U.S.Bar Table Championships at the SandsRegency Casino in Reno, Nevada. It was atriumphant return to the Sands for the Houstonbased Joyner who only last December had adisappointing third place finish in the SandsOpen. So complete was his dominance thatJoyner also won a 32 player mini before themain events got underway. The $20 minitourney paid the taciturn Joyner $260 (hedefeated Ron Wiseman in the finals) and gothis week off with a bang. He proceeded to goundefeated in both the 9-Ball and Eight Balltournaments, winning a remarkableSEVENTEEN matches in a row! Twenty-twoin a row counting the mini tournament! Nowthat’s Dominance. There has never been aperformance even remotely close to this inthe ten previous U. S. Bar Table Championships. And all this from a playerwho claims to not like playing on the small tables. In the 9-Ball division 108 players teed it up on Thursday March 4. All but 32were eliminated the first day and the remaining players were “in the money”.With eight players left on the winner’s side of the board Joyner beat formerNew Jersey and California champion Paul “Doc” Brienza 9-4. Next upwas the always tough Jose Parica and down he went 9-5. This was followedby a 9-5 ‘hot seat’ victory over Ernesto Dominguez. Ernesto earned areturn shot at Joyner by defeating Parica 9-6. To no avail as the Joynerturned on the jets to coast to a 9-6 win and gain the title and the 5K to gowith it.Next up was Eight Ball and a huge 151 player field got underway on Friday. In the round of eight, Joyner got his first real scare, falling behind RickRaymundo 4-0 in the race to five. With the alternate break format thingslooked bleak for quiet Cliff, but somehow he pulled it off taking the next fivegames in a row. He then bounced Len Swisher and Edwin Montal byidentical 5-2 scores to reach the hot seat. Edwin took the loser’s sidedefeating another strong Canadian, Steve Cherewyk in a 5-4 thriller. Onemore match for Joyner and he had to beat Montal who was shooting great
JOYNER SWEEPS U.S. BAR TABLE CHAMPIONSHIPSpool. The final match of this tournament mayhave been the best as both players playedexcellently. At 4-3 Joyner, Montal pulled offan amazing run-out making one brilliant shotafter another. In the case game, Joynershowed he would not be denied, breaking andrunning out a very difficult rack. It wasJoyner’s week and he earned every penny ofthe $11,260 he made at the Sands.Next year’s U.S. Bar Table Championship isscheduled for March 2-6, 2005. your perfect draw may degrade just the right amount to get the angle youwant.Similarly, if you are in a situation where the shot requires a hit thinner thanhalf-ball, you know immediately that it will be nearly impossible to pull thecue ball back to the 90-degree line. One more factor in this shot is the weight of the cue ball. Many cue ballsthat start out the same weight as the object balls are worn down in playfrom the constant abrasion of the tip and chalky cloth. You see “red circle”cue balls that have turned into “faint pink circle” cue balls because theowner is too cheap to replace worn-out equipment. Such a light cue ballwill draw far more easily than a cue ball of the proper weight. On the other hand, if you play on a coin-op table that uses a large cue ball— the traditional “bar ball” — you have the opposite problem. It will bemuch harder to draw the cue ball. How much harder? You already knowhow to find out, but more importantly, you now have a shot to test theequipment. Also, if the cue ball is brand new and regulation size, but the object ballsare old and worn down, you will see a little of the “bar ball” phenomenon. In my next column, I’ll go over some facets of using follow on half-ball hits.(The San Francisco Billiard Academy gives instruction at all levels frombeginning players to training Instructors through Master level. Quick-CleanSponsor of BCtvBrushless Pool Table Cleaner Will Also Sponsor TV Events in 2004Billiard Cub Network is proud to announce the addition of Quick-Clean, thebrushless pool and billiard table cleaner, as a new sponsor of Billiard Clubtelevision. 30-second commercials and in show promos for the producthave escalated sales to prompt the agreement.Hodges cleaned all tournament tables at both the U S Open 9-BallChampionship and the Derby City Classic after each match. “It got to thepoint where the players were asking to have the tables cleaned, claiming abetter playing cloth speed with more consistency.” BCn taped cleaningsession during all featured matches at the U S Open and the Derby CityClassic to create the commercial spots and in-show promos for theproduct. “The product is really taking off and the sales and distribution load neededto be somewhat centrally located as part of the marketing and advertisingvehicle that’s driving the sales. It’s a great match for Quick-Clean.”Quick-Clean is a dry foam surfactant that is sprayed over the whole tableand wiped off the playing surface with a micro-fiber wiper and off the railswith a micro-fiber rag. Quick-Clean emulsifies the chalk and dirt in thetable cloth and the micro-fiber wiper removes it from the surface, restoringthe cloth. More importantly, Quick-Clean eliminates brushing and vacuumingthat harm the fibers and the playability of the cloth. The end result is acleaner playing surface that lasts much longer than ever before. Well, I’ve been in and around pool for almost 40 years. I consider myselflucky to always find a good pool room wherever I lived. Seems like Californiahas got a LOT OF GREAT POOL ROOM OWNERS and one pretty goodPLAYER’S ASSOCIATION.Hard Times Billiards in Sacramento CA will be having it’s 5th annualJamboree this year thanks to the cooperation of Chet Itow of CaliforniaBilliards. Chet has been having the very successful “traditional RENOWarmup” for years and has graciously offered to hold it back a week, sothat Hard Times will be able to hold the Jamboree the week before theSANDS Reno shootout.Chet Itow will still be having his great tournament May 22nd and 23rd.Hard Times will start their Jamboree tournament May 25th until May 30th.Much thanks to Tony Annigoni for running up his cell phone bill and puttingthousands of miles on his car, making all of the communications worthwhile. The USPPA and California Billiards (Mountain View), Hard TimesBilliards (Sacramento), Jointed Cue (Sacramento), Jay’s Billiards(Hollywood Park), Ragg’s Rack Room (Eureka), The BilliardConnection (Northridge CA), P&J Billiards (Willow Creek CA), Sands(Reno) have all worked out a 2004 calendar of events. The listings were collected to help prevent any conflicts that might occur inmaking the schedules work.I have never seen this type of communication between pool hall owners. They all want their events to be successful and be the best that they canoffer for the players. This kind of scheduling has been needed to avoidconflicts for a very long time in the pool industry. The west coast poolrooms seem to have “got it together” better and quicker than the rest of thepool world. There is a total of $137,000 of “added money”, for these tournaments. Allwithin 500 miles of each other. Who says there isn’t any money to bemade this year in California and Reno?See what communications and proper scheduling conditions can do tohelp a pool room and tournaments be profitable to all concerned. See www.usppa.com (or see usppa ad page 20) for the 2004 tournamentlistings.Tom Suarez, Tournament Director,Hard Times Billiards, Sacramento CA

WSPL State Champions continued from the front page
newly attained division of PortOrchard was formed in Septemberof 2003 there were still manyunanswered questions; but the onefact that was well known is that therewere many talented players in the PortOrchard area.
After being organized into theirteam by captain Rich Lee, the teammanaged a fourth place finish in theFall Title Holders Tournament inJanuary. This was good experiencefor the new team!! Only one team inthat tournament, the Big Rack out ofEli’s Roadhouse, beat them and wenton to win the Fall Title HoldersTournament. That experience wouldgive the Bethel Saloon team theconfidence they needed to competeon a higher level in March. The
confidence level obtained in their first and last matches, as they went on to do what no team hasdone before them; contributed tothem winning matches against veryexperienced teams in sweepingfashion. On their way through the fieldof competitive teams they would alsosee what they had experienced in theirFall Title Holders Tournament, suddendeath matches all around them!! The2004 State Championship would fielda total of nine sudden death matches,(a record) and make the entire eventvery exciting and more competitivethan any past State Championship sofar. Many matches went down to thelast match and last two balls, but itwas the Bethel Saloon Pirates thatreally established a presence that
would show against the Time OutShooting Crew on Monday night!!Congratulations to the Pirates andthanks to all of the teams thatparticipated in this years StateChampionship!!

WOMENS WINTER WARMUP
Jackie Fitchner
By Annie Gay February 28th, 2004 Sharky’s Pool & Brew ofSalem, Oregon held an open women’stournament. Colleen Carter, Sharky’s managerkindly donated five dollars per player and alsohad five diamond rings donated to this event.Renee Nohren of All That Glitters in Salem waspresent to donate the rings and offer free sizingfor the women. We had a drawing for two of therings and the other three were given to firstthrough third place. The two diamond rings werewon by Sharon Hall of Sheridan and ShawnHartung of Vancouver. This was an eight ball, double elimination, raceto three, open women’s event. The entry feewas $15. The tournament director is Annie Gayof Salem. We had intended to make this a two day eventbut the play went so smoothly we were able tofinish the tournament in one day. We were able
to do so because Sharky’s has ten tables for usto use. I plan on making this an annual event tobe held in February each year. We will have toclose the field at 64 players. Ladies, don’t missthis event next year. Watch for theadvertisement in January 2005.The results of the tournament are:1st Jackie Fitchner $190
+ diamond ring2nd Wanda Plummer $ 145
+ diamond ring3rd Patti Lilje $100
+ diamond ring4th Shawn Hartung $755/6 Jennifer Nordling $50 each
