See history come to life as 1620s Houseand Garden reopens for 2020 season
One of the jewels in the crown of Leicestershire’s history and heritage is reopening to the public on Thursday2 April. The 1620s House and Garden in Donington-le-Heath is a surviving example of a family home built inthe 13th century and modernised in 1618.
The house has been home to many families over its 700-year history, but the Digby family, which included the Gunpowder Plotter Sir Everard Digby,
lived in the house for more than 200 years. The house is set in beautiful 17th century style gardens with labelled plants and flowers, an orchard, herb
gardens and a maze. Following the opening day, the 1620s House & Garden will be open for the 2020 season from 10.30am – 4.30pm, Thursday to
Sunday and Bank Holiday Mondays, until the end of September. The House & Garden also hosts a wide and varied events programme all the way up
until the end of December. Events include talks, workshops, living history, open air theatre, plant fairs and much more. There is also an extensive
schools programme. To view the range of events and find out more information, visit www.doningtonleheath.org.uk or call 01455 290429. Admission
to the House, Garden and Tea Room is £6.95 for adults, £6 for concessions and £3.50 for children on standard opening days, with family tickets also
available. Tickets to the House, Garden and Tea Room are available from the on-site ticket office on standard opening days. Tickets give unlimited
free return visits on all non-event open days for 12 months from the day of purchase. Admission to events is subject to a small extra charge per
person with special events being subject to a one-off event charge – please see www.donington-le-heath.org.uk for details.
Cllr Richard Blunt, Leicestershire County Council Cabinet member for Heritage, Leisure & Arts, said: “The 1620s House is an historic gem and we are
pleased to be able to welcome back visitors for the 2020 season. The House and its gardens, along with its staff and volunteers, help to bring history to life
in an educational and attractive way and I would encourage people of all ages to pay it a visit.” The site is also available for private bookings and educational
visits outside normal opening hours.

camped at the temple, whilst a guest of his friend Charles Jennens

Janice Sharp from Ellistown was agonised by back pain and virtually chair-bound. She thought that enjoying life was over for her.
The 70-year-old former cleric had been prescribed a cocktail of drugs by her GP to try to combat the agony that ripped across her shoulder blades, but to no effect.
She was desperate, so in November she went for acupuncture by doctor Ye at Herbal Healing in Coalville.
Now she has her life back, thanks to a course of treatment by the renowned specialist in Belvoir Road.
Janice had been suffering on and off for many years but recently the pain had become totally debilitating and she found herself unable to go out, prepare meals or even play with her adored grandchildren.
She says: “I was in agony. I’d had scans and tests with GP which showed nothing, so they put it down to muscular pain and gave me various drugs, none of which worked.
“I was on Tramadol, Codeine, Ibuprofen and morphine but all they did was make me sleep. I was in tears and thought, I might as well not be alive.”
Desperate for help, she turned to Doctor Ye
and now is virtually pain-free. Janice is advising everyone in pain for whatever reason to waste no more time and to contact his clinic in Belvoir Road.
“I rang them in November, they saw me straight away,
Christmas eve I was cooking sausage rolls!”
Now on her ninth session, Janice adds: “I wish I had seen Doctor Ye sooner! For two years all I did was sit
with a hot water bottle across my back – even on holiday in Tenerife in 28 degrees on a sun lounger, I still needed my hot water bottle.
“I had tried everything, except acupuncture because I was a bit scared of needles. I needn’t have worried as they don’t hurt and I even feel relaxed with them in.”
Janice has discovered what many others know already. “Nothing is too much trouble for this clinic, they are kind, understanding and professional. I cannot sing their praises enough.”
“I advise anyone in doubt to pick up the phone like I did and ring them.”
Herbal Healing Acupuncture Clinic is to be found at Belvoir House,
Belvoir Road, Coalville, and is happy to take calls at any time on 01530 810888.

ELLEN IS ASHBY ROTARY YOUNG MUSICIAN 2020Ellen Bailey, an 16-year-old sixth-form pupil at Ashby School, won Ashby Rotary’s Young Musician Competitionheld at Ashby School on Tuesday 28 January. A total of 21 young people performed in this year’s event.
Ellen played Eugène Bozza’s ‘En Irlande’ for her competition piece. Both the audience and the adjudicators were impressed with her performance of
this versatile composition. She will now go to the District semi-final at Soar Valley Music Centre, Leicester on 8 February.
Celeste Iselin who attends Ivanhoe College in Ashby won the Fred Williams Musicianship Award which recognises young musicians who demonstrate
high levels of musicality regardless of experience or technical ability. It was presented by the Williams’ family in memory of Fred, a Rotarian of many
years’ standing who had been an enthusiastic supporter of young musicians in the town. 12-year-old Celeste gave a lively performance on the trumpet
of ‘Lindy Hop’ by Tom Davoren. It was her obvious future potential that won her this award. She will also go forward to the District semi-final. Three
more entrants in the Intermediate Category were also selected to perform again at the semi-final: Annabel Fraser, Emily Fretwell and Georgie
Woodings. In the Junior (age 6-10) Section, three competitors will also go forward to the semi-final: Libby Carter, Constance Iselin and Ava Jenkins.
There was spirited competition in the Senior Section and vocalist Ruby Chadderton together with pianist Cacily Kemble and trumpeter Amelia Bithell
will join Young Musician winner Ellen Bailey in the semi-final.
Adjudicators Dr Alison Bean and Ms Moira Usher told competitors how impressed they were with all of the performances and
praised them for having the courage to play in public. They also passed on useful tips for performing before an audience. Ashby
Rotary President John Sedgley praised all of the entrants and said he was most grateful to parents and teachers for their support for
the competition that concludes with the District Final on Sunday 1 March at Leicester Grammar School.

THE PRIDE OF ASHBY AND COALVILLEOCEAN PLASTIC POLLUTIONOur book presentations to local Primary schools are all complete and the last
assembly was taken in early February. Pictured are some of the children at Newton Burgoland, with
their books. We do hope the strong message about cutting ocean plastic pollution will continue to be
discussed amongst families and within schools.
CHRISTIANS AGAINST POVERTYLion President Ken Garner presented a cheque for
£600 to Katie Johnson, Services Director of CAP
Ashby, an organisation which helps individuals and
families get themselves out of debt. CAP runs
budgeting courses at Stevenson College, and also runs
‘Fresh Start’ courses to help low-level addicts. CAP
has a Help Desk at the Pathways Café, which is held
at Trinity Church, Kilwardby Street, Ashby, from
10.00-12.00 on Thursday mornings. The organisation
is currently helping 10 families in the area.
DEFIBRILLATOR NEWSWe are planning to install another defibrillator in our area in the near future, with the help of First Responder Bob Lilley from Shepshed who helped
us install one on Belvoir Road in Coalville a year ago. Bob has undertaken initial research and investigation for a suitable location in Ibstock, but we
have uncovered a problem. When someone collapses and you dial 999, East Midlands Ambulance Service will tell you the location of the nearest
defibrillator and give instructions how to access and use it. At least that’s what should happen. In fact, we have discovered that EMAS does not have
details of all the defibrillators in our area because some have not been registered. You may, therefore, be directed to a defibrillator which is further
away than necessary. SO if you have a defibrillator on your building, or you know the location of one in Ashby, Coalville or surrounding villages, please
would you drop me a text or e-mail with it’s exact location? The Lions are hoping to be instrumental in updating the EMAS database, so that everyone
in our area has the best possible chance of survival in the case of a heart attack. I will be happy to receive any information that will help us. By doing
so, you may be instrumental in saving someone’s life! Some defibrillators are located inside buildings such as shops, surgeries, leisure centres, gyms
etc and are therefore not available when the premises are closed. This information is also important, for obvious reasons. I look forward to receiving
lots of useful information this month, so the Lions can help EMAS as soon as possible. [email protected] • 07735 407637

Rotary Club helps local school with flood damageAshby Castle Rotary Club have made a donation to Willesley School in Ashby to help them get back to normalfollowing the awful flood damage suffered in November.
Last November the main building of Willesley School was flooded after very heavy rain and subsequent
runoff from surrounding fields. The school was closed for a couple of days while initial cleaning was carried
out and temporary classrooms were organised to
accommodate the children who were displaced. In mid
December, Bob Cornell of Ashby Castle Rotary Club
was able to visit the school, and was given a tour of
flood affected areas by the Head of School, Chloe Dilks.
Members of the Club were shocked to hear of the
extent of the damage, and the disruption to the running
of the school. On behalf of the Rotary Club, Bob
Cornell asked how we might be able to help the school, and it was suggested that if money was
available, a seating and storage area for the Foundation Stage classroom reading area could be
purchased to replace equipment lost due to water damage. The proposal was taken back to the
Rotary Club and submitted to it’s Community Team and Business Council in January, and it was
agreed to purchase the furniture as quickly as possible which has been made possible by utilising
monies from previous fundraising activities within the club. A cheque for £400 was presented in
the Foundation Stage Assembly in February and was very gratefully received by the children,
teachers and Head of School, and when the seating area is purchased and in place the club have
been invited to visit again and see it in use. The staff welcomed the support from Rotary and in
particular how quickly the funds had been made available. New class teacher Martha Daly said
“The new seating area will be welcomed by the children in helping their school routine get back to
normal”. Ashby Castle Rotary Club are delighted to be able to help. The school is hoping that
recovery work will be completed by Easter. Interested in finding out more about Rotary? If you
would like to come along to the Rotary Club of Ashby de la Zouch Castle please contact our
secretary Chris Knight at [email protected] or visit www.ribi.org.

The old man loved the snow – there was
always something quite magical about
how it could transform a dull landscape
with a white carpet. Wrapped up
warmly against the cold, he walked
carefully along the Path on the far side
of the park. With great delight, he had
watched the children sledging on the
slope in the middle of the park. He had
quietly joined in with their laughter and
giggles as he remembered the days
when he too would have sped down
at great speed holding on to the rope
on the sledge as though riding a wild
wooden horse.
By chance, his route took him past
the spot where the boy had pulled Out
his gloves and to where the toy Ruffle
was still lying in the snow. Noticing the
black and tan fur, the man bent down
to pick Ruffle up. Examining him closer,
the man recognised the breed straight
away, Remembering as a boy how his
Grandfather had talked about training
Airedales to carry messages in the war.
He looked round at the now empty
park.
‘Come on boy,’ he said to Ruffle,
stroking his damp fur. ‘Let’s dry you
out. No good leaving you here to get
cold and wet overnight!’
The man unbuttoned his warm winter
coat and placed Ruffle safely in the
inside Pocket. Once home, the man
placed Ruffle beside the fire to dry
out. With no Grandchildren of his own,
the man decided to give Ruffle to his
next-door neighbour’s young son.
The youngster was delighted with
his new furry friend and Ruffle soon
became the new favourite. Ruffle’s
first outing was an exciting trip to
the boy’s playgroup where a lively
bunch of children enjoyed playing and
Learning with an abundance of toys
and activities. Ruffle had a fine time:
riding in the toy cars, sharing juice
and biscuits and exploring the doll’s
house which was just the right size for
Ruffle! The boy who had taken Ruffle
to the playgroup was happy to share
Ruffle but Unfortunately during the
excitement of the day one of Ruffle’s
black bead eyes became loose and fell
off.
The morning sped by, but when home
time came it was a different child who
found Ruffle in the doll’s house and
decided to take Ruffle home with
them. Once home the younger child
showed Ruffle to her older sister. The
older sister immediately decided that
she too liked the look of Ruffle and
made up her mind to play with him
when her Younger sibling had gone
to bed. Seizing her chance later that
Afternoon, Ruffle was quickly hidden
under the older girl’s bed…

Saving a rare Mod Scooter The Agrati Company of Italy launched itself into the popularscooter market in 1958.
They produced cycle motors and scooters with low output, two stroke engines of various
cubic capacities, including the Capri of 70cc, 80cc and 125cc, the Rex Monaco and the
48cc Como. By the late 1960s the Agrati company ceased to exist due to a takeover by
the Italian Garelli company.
The Agrati scooter range, although less common and desirable than the Lambretta and
Vespa scooters, were ridden by Mods in the early sixties and will still be fondly remembered
by many previous proud owners.
My newly acquired scooter is a 1960 80cc Capri Model with a three speed manual gearbox; admittedly it does require a full restoration,
which has already begun, but this is part of the pleasure and challenge of owning an old classic......so, watch this space!

Soldiers, abseils andfamily fun to comeThe Moira Furnace has been like a sleeping dragon this winter.Whilst it’s lay silent though, much work has taken place behindthe scenes, preparing for the new 2020 season. The boat has hada major overhaul and its 3 yearly out of water checks, the museumhas undergone a radical overhaul and a massive, excitingprogramme of events has been planned which aims to offersomething for everyone, from free events to big festivals. Moredetails on our website!
To kick off the season in style, on the 4th and 5th April we welcome back the 1815
Coldstream Guards, the Earl of Moira himself and some have-a-go fun. Along with crafts
and a chance to ride on the boat with the Earl of Moira, take time to explore the living
history camp and our newly redone museum.
In May, we are very excited to offer a chance to abseil down the side of the furnace itself.
This is a first for Moira Furnace! We are looking to raise money for the trust, a registered
charity in itself, to help continue the work and upkeep of the site and its heritage offering.
If you are interested, it will cost a minimum of £40 for a go but if you would like to raise
more it would be gratefully received. For those just
wanting to watch, we will have circus skills and village
fete style games to have a go with, plus the Roots
Community Choir offering have-a-go Maypole and
Morris dancing sessions.

Anyone who saw Dark Side Of The Wall’s show at The
Palace in Ibstock last March will be delighted to hear they’re
returning again on SATURDAY 4th APRIL with their stunning
live show featuring classic material from one of the world’s
most enduring rock bands... the legendary Pink Floyd.
The award-winning DSOTW show is a spectacular combination
of expertly recreated Pink Floyd music mixed with projections,
lasers and light show, creating a memorable night for all lovers of
not just Pink Floyd, but fans of live music in general.
The band’s manager and bass player Steve Chilton says, “We
loved our show at The Palace last year and were thrilled at the
turn out. The audience were great from the opening song right
through to the encore and it was a no-brainer to arrange a return
this year. We’re all looking forward to seeing everyone in April.”
In well over 2 hours of reverent tribute to their heroes, DSOTW
perform music from all Pink Floyd’s classic albums and feature
tracks such as Comfortably Numb, Money, Wish You Were Here,
Shine On You Crazy Diamond and Another Brick In The Wall to
name just a few. If you’ve seen Dark Side of the Wall in concert
before then you’ll know it’s a show not to be missed.

the production.

The Ivanhoe Miss Motivators – These girls can!'The Ivanhoe Miss Motivators' are a group of femalestudent leaders tasked with increasing participationand interest in fitness and sports for our femalestudents, in particular as part of the 'Girls Active'Group. 'Girls Active' aims to get more girls active andenjoying PE and physical activity.
The programme is developed by children’s charity the Youth Sport Trust,
delivered in partnership with 'Women in Sport' and 'This Girl Can' and
funded through Sport England National Lottery funding.
At high school age
there can be a huge
decline in the number
of girls taking part in
sports, but research
shows that some
barriers to participation can be overcome with encouragement from their peers. 'Girls Active' is
not just about getting young people active, but harnessing young people’s talents and encouraging
them to make a difference to others both in and through sport. This is where our 'Miss Motivators'
come in.
As their latest project our group of 9 students
decided they wanted to improve changing facilities
for girls at Ivanhoe and so on Friday 7th February,
they worked tirelessly till 9pm to redecorate the
girls changing rooms as a surprise for all of the girls
at school. The result is a refreshed look and a
calming atmosphere that all of the girls will benefit
from. Well done girls.

Detectives for a DayYear 10 students from Ashby School became science detectives for a daywhen they took part in a CSI-style challenge at 3M in Loughborough.
They used a combination of forensic observation, analytical chemistry, social media analysis and suspect
profiling to unravel the clues to solve a crime scene scenario. The competition was designed to encourage
more forensic science-related STEM learning.
Ashby School entered two teams of five students who were asked to document, photograph and take
samples for further analysis. They then took part in laboratory activities where they used a number of
analytical techniques on evidence found at the scene. The teams will return to 3M in May to give a
presentation on their findings.

THE ROYAL HOTELAshby Museum was fortunate recently to purchase an AMS (autographmanuscript) relating to The Royal Hotel. It is dated 3rd October 1877. The Hotel had been going for 51 years.
On 8th March 1826, a meeting, chaired by Edward Mammatt, was held to build an hotel to accommodate
visitors to Ashby using the Saline waters at the newly-constructed Ivanhoe Baths. Shares were sold at £500
each; Robert Chaplin, architect of the Baths, was again employed and local builder Mark King was
commissioned on an estimate of £6,230.13.0.
Building ran over time (what’s new?), but the Hastings Hotel officially opened on Wednesday 17th December 1828. The Lords Hastings,
Chesterfield, Ferrers and other noblemen attended “an excellent dinner” laid on by the first Manager, Richard Wright. However, all was not
well: complaints about the standard of building work surfaced as early as July 1829; while in 1830 Wright was given notice to quit. The hotel’s
name changed between December 1835 and June 1836. Advertisements in the 1830s stated that ‘the best accommodations are provided
for visitants and families, as it is conducted on a system, which combines the highest style of
elegance, with the advantages of economy and comfort’. Up until the opening of the Leicester-
Burton railway, the hotel enjoyed not only the Bath Grounds to the rear, but a large frontage
with stables, walkways and shrubberies.
In the 1850s William Mills took over the running of the hotel; by 1870, his widow, Elizabeth
Hodsoll Mills was in charge. The Museum’s purchase relates to an Inventory drawn up ‘of the
Household Furniture, Plate, Plated Articles, Linen, China & Glass’ at the Royal. Only one bedstead
appeared to be over 4’ 6” long. Included were Kidderminster carpets, japanned chests of
drawers; dripping tins, pipe racks, spittoons, fish kettles; five bottles of Sparkenhoe and 2 quarts
of tomato sauce. Of great interest is the contents of the four cellars and basement passages. In Cellar No.3 were 20 bottles of Champagne
Clicquots dry; 17 bottles of Sparking Burgundy; in Cellar No.4: 2 dozen bottles of Home made wine; 31 of Pale sherry; 13 of Brown sherry.
In racks in a Passage: 7½ dozen bottles of Schweppes Lemonade; 1 dozen Old Ale; 3½ dozen Webster’s Soda; 5½ gallons of Gin; and 3
gallons of Rum. And so on! Customers would not run dry. Also listed were the contents of the Coach House, Stable Yard, Hay Loft, Harness
Room and Fowl House.Kenneth Hillier (Ashby Museum)

Students at Dixie Grammar School,
Market Bosworth, have started a
new initiative to reduce still further
any school waste which cannot
currently be recycled.
Dixie Waste Warriors has been set up by students,
teachers and parents of the school with the
purpose of collecting all manner of plastic products
which cannot currently go into the council’s own
recycling system. Dixie has already taken steps to
reduce its single-use plastic products and under
this latest initiative, even more products can be
saved from landfill, such as crisp packets, contact
lenses, plastic pens and highlighters.
Sponsored by one of the students’ parents, special
bins have been placed around the school, into
which all such products can now be placed. The
Waste Warriors then have the weekly task of
sorting this so it can be sent to the recycling company Terracycle. They, in turn, transform what would have been landfill, into plastic balls,
which can be used to produce watering cans, coffee tables or even playground equipment.
Following their whole school assembly to promote their project to the student body, the Dixie Waste Warriors have big plans. They are
aiming for the Eco School Award and individual “Green” Blue Peter Badges and also have plans to attend a Market Bosworth Parish Council
meeting with the aim of introducing the scheme to the local community.
TerraCycle state that they are Eliminating the Idea of Waste® by recycling the “non-recyclable.” Whether it’s coffee capsules from your home,
pens from a school, or plastic gloves from a manufacturing facility, TerraCycle can collect and recycle almost any form of waste. They partner
with individual collectors, as well as major consumer product companies, retailers, manufacturers, municipalities, and small businesses across
20 different countries. With the public’s help, they are able to divert millions of pounds of waste from landfills and incinerators each month.

Coalville Drama Groupgo back to the 1970'swith Abigail's Party!
The Coalville Drama Group are delighted to bepresenting the 1970's Mike Leigh classic,'Abigail's Party' as their March production.
Laurence and Beverly are entertaining their neighbours Angela,
Tony and Susan. Susan's teenage daughter, Abigail, is having a party
to which Susan has been firmly excluded. Over the drinks and
snacks, cliches and fatuous small talk abound.
The tension escalates as the marital strain between Beverly and
Laurence surfaces. Susan's anxiety over Abigail's party accelerates
as rock music and the imminent threat of impending doom
permeate the room. As Beverly and Angela offer some supremely
tactless remarks, reality finally breaks through the smugness.
The performances will take place at The Coalville Adult
School Hall and Theatre on Bridge Road from 18th until
21st March. Tickets: £8 and £6 concessions are available
from Hermitage FM Coffee Lounge, Coalville, Ashby
Tourist Information Centre or online at www.casdg.org.
It may be possible to PAY ON THE DOOR, but advanced
booking is recommended to avoid disappointment.

De Montfort University students fuelsolutions to combat logistics skills shortagePall-Ex has teamed up with De Montfort University Leicester (DMU) to help tackle the logistics industry’snationwide skills shortage.
Abby Langley, Marketing Manager at Pall-Ex and DMU Alumni spoke to
the students about the project: “It’s great to be back at DMU, I loved my
time here. Pall-Ex are passionate about promoting the logistics industry to
the younger generation and I cannot wait to hear the ideas the students come
up with.”
Kevin Buchanan, Group CEO at Pall-Ex, comments: “Attracting the
younger generation has become more challenging as they are unaware of the
scope of jobs available and the opportunities for progression.
“We see this as a learning opportunity for ourselves, as well as the students,
as it will enable us to get a fresh perspective from young people themselves
and better understand how to inform them on the great opportunities within
the logistics sector. We want logistics to be a talking point in schools, so we
can educate young people on the positives of not only driving, but other roles
in the industry and the important role logistics plays in all of our lives.”
Pall-Ex Group is an award-winning network of hauliers formed in 1996.
As the No.1 network for quality, Pall-Ex is a renowned name in logistics,
delivering an efficient and reliable service backed by innovative technology
and a first-class network of established SMEs. With its headquarters and
central UK hub located in the Midlands, Pall-Ex is the beating heart of the
logistics industry, transporting more than 30,000 pallets across the globe
every day with support from its carefully selected international partners.
For more information on Pall-Ex, visit www.pallex.co.uk
The palletised freight network has tasked second year marketing students
with developing creative ideas to promote careers in the logistics sector
to young people aged 16 to 24.
The Ellistown firm has provided a live brief for an integrated marketing
campaign, using market research, social media, influencer marketing and
PR. Campaigns will promote HGV driving roles and other careers,
encouraging applicants from under-represented groups, such as women
and BAME communities. The industry is facing a growing shortage of
drivers due to an ageing workforce; research from workers’ union Unite
shows that just 1% of HGV drivers in the UK are aged under 25, while
the average age of drivers was recorded at 48 in 2016 – up from 45.3 in
2001 – with 13% aged over 60.
Despite being the UK’s fifth largest employer, responsible for moving 1.41
billion tonnes of goods in 2018 according to figures from the Department
for Transport, the logistics industry continues to face recruitment issues.
Rachael Mabe, who runs the Advertising & Promotion module at DMU,
comments: “It’s fantastic that one of Leicestershire’s largest companies
wants to work with our students on this important marketing campaign. We’re
so proud of the talent and work ethic our students show, and working on live
projects like this gives our students invaluable first-hand, practical experiences
which enable them to develop the skills and qualities required in the
workplace. I’m looking forward to seeing what ideas they come up with.”
