Last month’s quiz answer... and winner! Many of you correctly identified our mystery local landmark as the replica horse gin and headstocks (an early form of lifting coal, before steam engines were introduced) at Hough Mill, Swannington. Officially unveiled on 3rd April 2004, the project was sponsored by the Helen Jean Cope Trust, Leicester Area NUM and LCC. The metal horse and man statues were the first works by a pair of former miners.

This month’s prize has been won by Carolyn Wheeldon and our picture shows the prize draw being performed by Ibstock Palace Community Centre administrator, Mark Burns (see The Palace events diary on page 16).

Let’s see how well you do with our next landmark!

Pall-Ex has sped into 2019 by celebrating the successes of its network members at a prestigious awards event.

Members from over 90 haulage SMEs from around the UK were in attendance, along with international partners and quality suppliers, as the logistics giant hosted a glittering awards ceremony hosted by comedian Paddy McGuinness at De Vere East Midlands Conference Centre.

The event rewarded network members, international partners and Pall-Ex staff for a successful 12 months, which saw the firm win a major industry accolade, increase pallet volume and launch new IT software to improve usability, with full consignment visibility and streamlined booking processes for domestic and global freight.

Ilkeston-based PMB Pallet Express scooped the sought-after Depot of the Year award, which was voted for by members of the Pall-Ex network and was based on the firm’s first-class service.

Premier Palletised Ltd, which is based in Wembley, was selected by Group managing director, Kevin Buchanan, for the Outstanding Contribution to the Network accolade.

The company celebrated 25 years in business and a £5 million turnover in 2018, having been launched by managing director and former DJ, Adam Hopcroft, from the bedroom of his council flat.

Regional winners were also celebrated, with ADD Express winning for Scotland and the North, Direct Deliveries winning for the

Midlands, Surrey Pallitz for the South East and Pall-Ex South West for the South West.

Cranleigh Freight, Matthews Haulage and Mars-Jones were all rewarded for being the Highest KPI Performer of the Year 2018 in their respective categories.

Winners were all rewarded due to their commitment to the Pall-Ex network, demonstrated by their compliance, quality distribution, service excellence and communication.

Additional winners include Neill and Brown Global Logistics for Business Growth, DBL Logistics for New Member of the Year 2018, Pall-Ex Romania for Pall-Ex International Network of the Year.

Moody Logistic and Storage received the Staples Award for Delivery Excellence and JT Leyland received the Jelf award for Excellence in Freight Management – two new accolades to celebrate the Pall-Ex’s commitment to ongoing quality partnerships.

Kevin Buchanan, Group managing director at Pall-Ex, comments: “We’re proud to support SMEs around the country and to be able to help them grow through the Pall-Ex network. We value the contribution of every member and international partner and are proud of their hard work over the last 12 months, which has enabled Pall-Ex to secure its reputation as the number one network for quality.

“Our chosen winners are well-deserving of their accolades and we are delighted to celebrate their commitment to providing exceptional service and maintaining the high

standards our network is known for. These teams have gone the extra mile to help us excel and we hope that this celebration will motivate the entire network for the year ahead.

“We are particularly delighted with the contribution of Premier Palletised Ltd who were selected for the accolade of Outstanding Contribution to the Network due to their achievements over the last 25 years. They have been a valued member of our network for 15 years and strive to deliver the very best service.

“Our network shows that by working together, we can win together, and it enables our customers to benefit from a cost-effective, efficient and reliable service across the UK and Europe. We are looking forward to a successful 2019 and strengthening our service over the next 12 months.

“We would also like to thank all our sponsors for supporting this event. Our suppliers are key to Pall-Ex’s growth and future development and without their support events like this one, simply wouldn’t happen.”

Pall-Ex Group was formed by renowned entrepreneur Hilary Devey CBE in 1996 and is an award-winning network of quality hauliers, which collaborate to deliver leading palletised freight distribution services throughout the UK, Europe and beyond. With its headquarters and central UK hub located right at the heart of the Midlands, Pall-Ex has grown phenomenally since its inception in 1996.

Local stairlift company Candor Care offer tips to helppeople stay steady on their feetA simple way to help prevent trips and falls around the home is to ask yourself some questions about theenvironment you live in….

1. Do you keep clutter to a minimum, especially around thefloor areas?

2. Do your stairs have handrails, and if not have you considered installing some?

3. If you have trickier areas to navigate around your home, are they well lit?

Here are some of the ways in which you can stay steady and confident…

Keep fit • We don’t mean running the next marathon, but muscle strength is important to help with balance and coordination. Exercises such asyoga and pilates can help (look out for local classes, or head over to YouTube for a free video!). Also consider a light walk or swim.

Stay healthy on the inside too • Eating foods which are rich in calcium and vitamin D help to keep you strong and healthy. Top calciumrich foods include, milk, cheese, sardines and salmon.

Get that check up • Make sure that both your eyes and ears are in tip top condition as both can hinder your mobility and cause accidents.Look out for free eye tests and optical vouchers.

Don’t ‘slip’ up • Slippers (however warm and cosy) can actually be a hinderance if they have a sole without any grip and don’t have very goodstructure to them. Choose a well-cushioned pair that won’t send you flying on the kitchen floor.

Managing Director, Alan Ferguson said – “I visit many elderly people who have experienced trips and falls in their home. This can often lead to them feelingshaken and vulnerable, especially when using the stairs. We want to help prevent accidents around the home and having a stairlift fitted is one solution whichcan provide reassurance and safety”

And the owner of Coalville Furniture Superstore in Belvoir Road would like to thank shoppers in the area for their support since the shop opened in June 2014, saying the business had gained an excellent reputation and customer base, and was very well received by people in the town and surrounding areas.

Company Director Paul Bancroft said: “It is with a heavy heart that we have taken the decision not to reopen the store. The flood, caused by a burst water pipe in March last year, caused damage to stock and in the building. It was devastating to see. It has taken an unbelievable amount of time for everything to get sorted which is very frustrating for a business owner. But with all things taken into consideration we have now decided to permanently close.”

There’s good news for local people on the hunt for home furniture and beds though, as Mr Bancroft runs another company not

far away which has been open for almost 25 years. People in Ibstock and nearby are already familiar with the store, but it is hoped home owners from the Whitwick area will take a short drive to Barwell to visit it.

“We are proud of our family roots at our Barwell business, The Suite Superstore, not too far from Whitwick and surrounding areas. We welcome people from this area to visit us - as a number of customers have already done - for the same excellent service, choice and prices which were well recognised at the Coalville store. And customer recommendation remains extremely positive.”

In the massive showroom in Barwell, there is a huge display of home furniture to complement the fabulous range of three piece suites, sofas and chairs, including dining tables and chairs, electric lift and rise chairs and occasional furniture.

The store has an excellent range of luxury beds from leading manufacturers, including electric adjustable and cool gel beds, with an impressive choice of mattresses to suit people’s preferences and needs. The store also sells bedroom furniture to suit different tastes and budgets, including a range from award-winning manufacturer Rauch.

Customers can enjoy a friendly service, a car park and free local delivery.

Check out the store’s adverts in The Community Voice magazine or the store’s website for more information at www.thesuitesuperstore.co.uk

“I would like to thank The Community Voice for the support this local magazine offers independent businesses such as mine; the magazines are very useful in helping to promote our products and the personal service we offer to the local community,” said Mr Bancroft.

Businessman thanks shoppers as furniture store closesA furniture store in Coalville which was damaged by water from a burst pipe last year will not be re-opening in the town.

C H A R I T Y C H A M P I O N S High Specification is the Standard at RavenstoneWe are located just a stone’s throw from Ravenstone village centre. Woodstone Meadow is a collection of 50 new homes, offering a selection of four and five bed luxury homes. The ultimate in family living, these stylish properties at Woodstone Meadow are built with style, quality and value in mind, and come with 10 years NHBC warranty.

Our ethos is to offer the prospective purchaser a complete family home to move into.

With this in mind we offer a high specification as standard, all homes include fully fitted kitchens with a choice of ceramic floor tiles or kardean, they come with quality Bosch appliances including induction hob, single electric oven, a microwave/oven combi, integrated fridge/freezer and dishwasher as standard. The bathrooms and en-suites are luxuriously designed and are fitted with quality sanitary ware and chrome fittings, chrome towel radiators and porcelanosa ceramic wall tiles. We fit a security alarm and the front and rear gardens are landscaped/turfed. We also supply fitted wardrobes to bedroom one. Again all this is included as standard.

And for reservations taken this month we are also including our standard flooring/carpet package.

To assist keen house buyers we have the Home To Buy scheme, Part Exchange and great offers. to Coalville. It is located on the Funeral Director’s building on Belvoir Road and it is hoped that it will benefit all the people of Coalville. The gift has been possible through the generous donations of customers at Morrisons in December and during Santa’s sleigh runs around the area, as well as at other events during the year.

Bob Lilley, Community First Responder and former member of Shepshed Lions, visited the Lions Club in December to train members in CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) and the use of a defibrillator in the event of a heart attack. He has raised over £21,000 since October 2017 and has been installing defibrillators in North West Leicestershire – one at Woodhouse Eaves, 10 in Loughborough, 5 in Shepshed, plus one in Nottingham, and most recently the new one in Coalville. He and his team have been involved in training over 1500 people during the same period.

So how do you use a defibrillator? In the event of a collapse time is of the essence. As a bystander you should ring 999 for an ambulance straight away. You will then be told the location of the nearest defibrillator and a code number to access it. If possible one person should stay with the patient and

begin CPR while someone else goes to get the defibrillator. Once the box is opened it is self-explanatory and talks to you, telling you exactly what to do, step by step. You should continue until paramedics arrive and take over.

SURVIVAL RATES ARE MASSIVELY INCREASED FROM 6% WITHOUT USE OF THE MACHINE TO 74% IF IT IS DEPLOYED WITHIN A FEW MINUTES.

If you would like to know more about the project, or have a group interested in learning how to respond to a heart attack please get in touch with Bob Lilley at [email protected] who will be only too happy to arrange a training session, or ring Lynda Allen, President of Ashby and Coalville Lions, on 07735407637.

LIFE-SAVERFOR COALVILLE!

Sunday 7th April sees the return of The Loughborough half marathon and team relay. The 13.1mile course has been described as one of the toughest in the East Midlands. Available places are hotly contested, with only 800 up for grabs this year.

Organised by the Loughborough based charity Living Without Abuse, all the money raised from the event goes towards the charity’s vital and much needed work of supporting men, women and children who have had their lives shattered by domestic abuse.

Living Without Abuse’s Event Organiser Gina King said: “This is the third and possibly last year the half-marathon will use this route and we are hoping for an excellent turnout. We only have 800 places available this year. The run is all on pavements, footpaths and pathways and is certainly tough but a fantastic course through some beautiful countryside.”

This year the charity hopes to raise even more than last year’s figure of £20,000. It costs £400 to support just one person who is experiencing domestic abuse, so the money raised from this event makes a huge difference to people’s lives.

Registration is now open and the entry fee for the half marathon is £26 for unaffiliated runners and £24 if you’re affiliated to a running club. There is also a Team Relay Challenge with four people per team with a total entry fee of £70.00.

The event is co-sponsored by Duncan & Toplis Loughborough, A Plan Insurance Loughborough and the charity’s new headline sponsor for all events during 2019 Arch Communications.

For more information and to enter the event please visit http://www.lwa.org.uk/events/loughborough-half.asp or email [email protected] for an entry form.

Parish Council ElectionsIbstock Parish Council is made up of 13 councillors, who are elected every four years. The village is split into wards, for the purpose of elections. At the last elections in May 2015, Ibstock had an approximate turn out of 60% of residents to vote who they wanted to represent them from the candidates standing. The next election is 2nd May 2019.

As Chairman, I can honestly say we try. We don’t get it right all of the time, but we identify areas that we can address, we work together, and we deliver. In the past four years, physical items we have improved are our play areas, relocated and rebuilt the skate park, improved and enhanced our village planting schemes, reopened the High street toilets, replaced notice boards. As well as the monthly general items of planning, mowing, new website, better information. As I’ve said before at times it can be frustrating, especially with funding and time delays due to protocols, but in the end, we get there. We have projects suggested for the coming months, and I’m sure others will arise, but being proactive and working for our village needs is always paramount.

So, could you be a candidate and make a difference?

Councils are made up of a diverse group of people. As a village we all have different views and needs and what we feel would make a difference. I urge you to think whether you could join the team and continue making a difference. There are no formal qualifications required, other than:

• British or a citizen of the Commonwealth or European Union

• At least 18 years old

• Registered to vote in Ibstock or have lived, worked or owned property here for at least 12 months before an election.

We meet once a month for no more than 3 hours, (very occasional additional site visits if required) to discuss our items. Generally, the rest is up to the individual. Some have working commitments so have less time than others, but as with all good jigsaws, it’s the coming together that’s important, to enable us to progress for the good of our village.

Please, please consider being part of the team improving the parish for us all. There is more information on our website, or don’t hesitate to contact our clerk who will happily have a chat to alleviate any concerns you have and help you with the process.

Yours, Stuart Chairman (2018-2019)

HOW LONG DO WINDOWS LAST... WHEN SHOULD YOU REPLACE YOUR UPVC WINDOWS?Usually, double glazed windows can last between 18-20 years. This means during the lifetime of the window the energy savings that will be generated will pay for the initial cost of installation, however, the lifetime can be cut short if the window has been improperly installed or is displaying any one of the below signs.

SIGNS THAT A WINDOW NEEDS REPLACING

Damaged or warpedIf your windows are damaged or warped. Then it would be a good time to replace your windows especially if the window has lost the weather seal.

A sign that the weather seal has been damaged is that the double glazed windows condensation within the two glass panes. This may be a problem with the weather seal or, more severely, the frame.

RottingAnother sign that the window is broken or is damaged which may not be obvious is that may be rotting. Rotting usually happens with wooden frames that are old and have been poorly maintained. This exposes them to the elements and leads to the wooden decomposing. A rotting window frame is one that should not be ignored and fixed immediately.

Cold airAnother sign that your window is damaged or warped is that it lets in cold drafts. This is bad for energy efficiency and this indicates that there may be a problem with the window frame. Specifically, the insulation surrounding the frame. Replacing your window would fix this and get rid of the cold drafts that would be entering your home.

NoiseWindows can provide acoustic insulation that is beneficial for enjoying a relaxing evening or sleeping peacefully, however, that relaxing evening or the peaceful can be disturbed if the acoustic insulation is failing. The acoustic insulation provided by windows and deteriorate over time as weather can damage the seal and frame. This is especially true for windows that are wooden or have single panes.

On average, double glazed windows can reduce the noise by 25dB which is a roughly 58% drop in noise. Triple glazing pushes this a 90% reduction.

Get the best online window quote!Getting an accurate estimate of the costs involved in replacing your windows should be something that you do after you have checked whether your windows display any of the above signs.

Couldn’t be happier!I could not have been happier with the way Progress looked after me. I had other companies quote me but were very pushy. Progress did not push me at all and made it clear they had my best interests in mind. Thank you. My windows look great and keep the noise out.

Step back in time to explore our early 17th century house and its gardens and see how people lived 400 years ago.

Reopening for 2019 season Thursday 4 April

Saturday 6 & Sunday 7 April - costumed members of the Sealed Knot Society

demonstrating 17th century crafts, cooking,

military and domestic life, 10.30am - 4.30pm.

See history come to life as1620s House and Gardenreopens for 2019 seasonOne of the jewels in the crown of Leicestershire’s history and heritage is reopening to the public on Thursday 4 April.

The 1620s House in Donington le Heath will be throwing open its ancient doors and welcoming visitors back for the for the 2019 season on April 4. And on Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 April, visitors will be able to experience a slice of 17th century life for themselves.

From 10.30am to 4.30pm on both days of the weekend, costumed members of the Sealed Knot Society will be recreating the sights, sounds, smells and activities of the early Jacobean period.

Visitors will be able to see the wealthy family members and their servants going about their business in the house, while outside in the grounds, there will be a tented camp full of early 17th century cookery, crafts and games, as well as weapons and armour of the time.

The 1620s House and Garden in Donington-le-Heath is a surviving example of a family home built in the 13th century and modernised in 1618. The house has been home to many families over its 700-year history, but the Digby family, which included the Gunpowder Plotter Sir Everard Digby, lived in the house for more than 200 years. The house is set in beautiful 17th century style gardens with labelled plants and flowers, an orchard, herb gardens and a maze.

Following the opening day, the 1620s House will be open Thursday to Sunday and Bank Holidays, from 10.30am to 4.30pm, until the end of October.

Admission to the House, Garden and Tea Room is £5.95 adult, £5 concession and £3.50 child on standard opening days, with family tickets

also available. Tickets give unlimited free return visits on all non-event open days for 12 months from the day of purchase. Admission to special events – including the opening weekend - is subject to an extra £2 charge per person.

Cllr Richard Blunt, Leicestershire County Council Cabinet member for Heritage, Leisure & Arts, said: “The 1620s House is an historic gem and we are pleased to be able to welcome back visitors for the 2019 season.

“The House and its gardens, along with its staff and volunteers, help to bring history to life in an educational and attractive way and I would encourage people of all ages to pay it a visit.”

The site is also available for private bookings and educational visits outside normal opening hours.

The Palace Players prove they’re ‘the Cat’s Whiskers’ with their production of Dick Whittington! The Palace Players had a fabulous time last month, with their production of ‘Dick Whittington’’; a hit with audiences and performers alike! The Palace stage was paved with gold and glitter, as the happy cast romped their way from the Sultana’s Palace to Highgate Hill, via Queen Rat’s subterranean lair, with adventures on the high seas and a short stay on a desert island on the way!

Written and directed by group member Al Lester, this highly successful show incorporated all the elements of a traditional family panto; terrible jokes, colourful costumes, audience participation and lots of singing and dancing.

The group thank everyone who supported their show. They meet every Wednesday night at The Palace Community Centre, High Street, Ibstock at 7.30pm. It is a friendly group, with members of all ages and experience. Anyone interested in finding out more about any aspect of amateur theatre is most welcome to come along. (All children under 16 years do need to be accompanied by a parent or adult guardian at all times.)

How to get the best out of our appointment systemIn order to be able to help as many patients as possible each day, we ask all our patients to have a telephone call from one of our doctors in the first instance. This has the benefit that if something can be dealt with over the phone, you won’t have to take time coming in to the surgery for an appointment. However, if you do need to be seen, we can often get you in the same day or direct you to the clinician with the appropriate skills to care for you.

In order to make things as easy as possible for patients, if you need your telephone call at a particular time for a genuine reason, please mention this to the receptionists and they’ll make a note for the GP who will do their best to ‘phone at this time.

If you have a telephone appointment and the doctor says you need to be seen, if you can’t come the same day, let the doctor know and they’ll do their best to book you on a day and time which is convenient. This means you don’t have to phone on the day you need to be seen, you can have your phone call one day and be seen on another day.

Quite a number of patients have low immunity for various reasons, and the last thing we want is for these patients to catch something while at the surgery. If a doctor speaks to a patient who is infectious, if possible they’ll treat them over the phone or if not we can ask them to sit somewhere away from other patients when they attend the surgery. In this way they won’t infect anybody else in the waiting room.

Not a patient yet?If you live locally and haven’t joined our practice yet, we’re accepting new patients. Here is some feedback from existing patients.

“ I’m shocked that I’ve been able to get an appointment on the same day. My old practice was a minimum 3 week wait. I got through in 3 rings, and the receptionists were lovely.”

“ I rang at 5.15pm and was being seen by 5.30pm with a poorly child.”

“ The receptionists are always really helpful.” Traditional Values, Modern Healthcare

Hi, I’m Philippa and I am the owner and groomer at the new ‘My Furry Friends Dog Grooming Salon’ on the High Street in Ibstock.

I have had a love for all animals from a young age and having grown up with a range of pets, I knew I would always pursue a career with animals.

When I finished school, I went on to study a BTEC in Animal Management at College, I then studied a BSc Hons in Animal Biology at Nottingham Trent University.

When I completed my degree, I knew I wanted to share my passion for animals with others and so went on to study a PGCE and qualified as a lecturer. I have been teaching Animal care at Colleges in the Midland for the last 6 years.

As someone who is always keen to learn new skills, I was offered the opportunity to complete the Level 3 City and Guilds Dog Grooming course and loved every second of it! I have since been teaching the Level 2 City and Guilds Dog Grooming course to aspiring groomers.

Grooming sparked an excitement in me and I knew this was something I wanted to pursue further…..and here I am!

‘My Furry Friends’ aims to provide a calm, welcoming environment for your furry friends, using the latest equipment in the grooming industry.

I have chosen to use as many natural products as possible, with our shampoos being ethically sourced, natural and award winning. Within the salon we will also be stocking lovely ‘doggie’ products, from shampoos to collars, leads and some delicious handmade treats.

I look forward to welcoming you and your furry friends into the salon soon, please follow us on Facebook and Instagram for updates on the progress of the salon and information on our grand opening or visit www.myfurryfriends.co.uk.

See you soon!

Hello, I would like to introduce myself as the new neighbourhood Sergeant for the Bardon Hill neighbourhood beat.

I have been a police officer for 17½ years and spent my previous service in the Beaumont Leys Neighbourhood team as a police constable on the west side of the city. I was promoted to Sergeant and I have recently worked in Eastern Counties covering Oakham, Rutland, Market Harborough, Lutterworth and the south side of inner city Leicester on a rolling 247 service in front line policing.

I have a wealth of experience in community policing and have a passion for problem solving. I have completed a number of projects with those that cause harm and those that need our support.

I enjoy working with partners and the community, being part of what matters to you in your area.

Hopefully you will see myself out and about in the community with the well-established neighbourhood team, please come and have a chat with me and share your views or concerns.

I would like to share with you our Crimestoppers telephone number which lets you report information about crime please ring 0800555111. Your details will not be revealed or monitored, the company are a charity, they have a website and you can report online https://crimestoppers-uk.org/

Finally I bring some good news on landing here, the police budget for the first time in a number of years has increased thanks to the people of the county, which enables us to have growth in the service and have an uplift in police officers and police staff for Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.

‘SOUL MAN OF IBSTOCK’Last month we followed the story of Richard Reed who was a legendary local DJ – appearing alongside other national and international celebrities from the late 1960’s until 2003. We ended last month’s story where Richard had appeared alongside The Kinks at Baileys nightclub in Leicester (formerly known as The Top Rank Suite) in 1971.

In 1974 Richard took up a monthly Friday night residency at the Town Hall, Ashby De La Zouch, which was so successful that it ran for six years until 1980. As a disco aimed at 14-18 year olds it was a unique monthly event which is still fondly remembered by the people who attended at the time.

Even during his residencies, Richard was also very busy appearing at private parties such as wedding venues and these continued until 2003 when he decided to pack up his sound deck and retire. At one of his last appearances in 2003 at The Charnwood Arms in Bardon, Richard raised £300 for charity and the cheque was presented to Joan Allen and Betty Stiles from Cancer Research UK.

That should have been it – but you cannot keep a good man down and due to demand he started the IBSTOCK SOUL CLUB in 2007 starting at the Ibstock Working Men’s Club in Central Avenue.

The Soul Club moved to Ibstock Welfare until it’s closure whereby it moved back to its original venue at Ibstock Working Men’s Club.

With the demise of the Working Men’s Club the Soul Club moved to its present location at Heather St Johns Football Club and now has a membership of 768 and growing. Such is its great reputation that people travel from all over the Midlands to attend its monthly sessions and in November one of the members, Simon Walsgrave of Nuneaton won the World Northern Soul Dance Competition at The Tower Ballroom, Blackpool – what an accolade!

It is fair to say that due to the success of the club, retirement has not quite worked out as quietly as Richard would have expected but he loves what he is doing so the story is far from finished just yet!

DO YOU HAVE ANY MEMORIES OF RICHARD PLAYING AT YOUR WEDDING PARTY OR SOCIAL OCCASION? PERHAPS YOU MET YOUR PARTNER AT ONE OF HIS GIGS? IF SO PLEASE LET US KNOW YOUR STORY.

IBSTOCK SOUL CLUB MEETS EVERY 3rd FRIDAY OF EACH MONTH AT

HEATHER ST JOHNS FOOTBALL CLUB 8pm–1am.

COME AND JOIN US FOR A GREAT NIGHT OF SOUL AND DANCE!

Simon Walsgrave

Spring clean your central heating systemWith the promise of milder weather just around the corner, Spring is the ideal time to have your heating system cleaned.Using a three pronged approach of chemicals, magnets and a Kamco flushing kit, we can clean the inside of your radiators, pipework and boiler heat exchange.

A chemical flush can improve the flow and efficiency of your existing boiler and heating system by removing any build up of sludge and scale deposits.

The magnets also remove fragments of steel that peel off of older radiators over time.

Once the flush out is completed (usually within 8 hours) we then re-fill the heating system adding inhibitor to ensure future protection.

If you have already given up on your New Year’s resolution, there is no reason why you can’t try again! With only 8% of us succeeding at our New Years resolutions, this article looks at a few top tips to help you to stick to yours.

Be Realistic – There is no point in setting unachievable goals as this causes unnecessary stress and may overwhelm us making it likely that we will not even try. Setting a goal that is realistic but only a little challenging will help us to take the first step and may lead on to bigger things once achieved.

Break it into little steps – Breaking a goal down into little manageable steps will give you a plan of action. Every time you achieve a little step you will feel good and this will motivate you to carry on and achieve your overall goal.

Knowing ‘why’ will motivate you – Many people have goals at this time of year. They may include stopping smoking or losing weight. It is important that you understand why you want to do these things. If you focus on the ‘why’ – be it to become healthier so you have more energy to run around after your little ones or so you can fit into that lovely dress/suit for your daughter’s wedding – this will be the thing that motivates you and will keep you motivated.

Make it a habit – If we make a small change that may include 100 sit ups a day; make a point to do 10 sit ups every time you boil the kettle. Our brains learn through repetition so the more we repeat it the quicker it becomes a habit; and we all know how difficult habits are to break!

Improve your sleep – Healthy sleeping patterns are essential to restore brain energy and willpower. Having a good night’s kip will keep you on track and focused. If you are struggling with your sleep patterns, it is a good idea to try to stick to a regular sleep and wake time; avoid caffeine after 12pm and limit screen time at least an hour before you go to bed. If you are still struggling; hypnotherapy may be able to help you!

Focus on what you want – our brains don’t really understand the word don’t so if I say ‘don’t think of a pink elephant’ I am quite confident that you are now thinking of a pink elephant! If you say to yourself, ‘I am no longer going to eat takeaways’, you will be thinking about take-aways. Constantly. A subtle shift in focus will make all the difference, instead say to yourself, ‘I am going to cook healthy meals for tea’ or ‘I will choose the healthier option’.

Focus on your achievements – No matter how big or small; celebrate every step of your success. When we achieve something we release

our feel good chemical Serotonin – which is a lovely, natural reward system that will keep you on track!

Be Kind – to yourself! Research indicates that those who overly criticise themselves are less likely to achieve their goals or stay on track. If you do veer off course; instead of berating yourself; have a kind word with yourself. For example, if you scoffed a whole pack of biscuits – ‘I accept that I lost control and ate all of the biscuits, it has made me feel a little rubbish and I will make more of an effort to stick to healthier choices/eat moderately tomorrow’

Phone a Friend – If you have a friend who wants to achieve the same goal as you this can be a fantastic motivator. Naturally, we don’t like to let others down so having that extra person to do it for may make all the difference. It is important to have a friend who will motivate you and give you that kick up the backside when you are feeling like giving up. It’s also nice to have that company and a little bit of moral support.

Hypnotherapy – Research shows that hypnotherapy is highly effective in helping to achieve goals. It increases confidence and motivation and may just give you the boost you need to stick to your resolutions.

Local resident and business man, Mark English, has had a life-long interest in aircraft, specifically WW2 Bomber Command. Living in the village of Nailstone, he was well aware of the story regarding the fateful night, 75 years ago, on September 27th 1944, when a B-17G Flying Fortress crashed in the locality. The bomber, named ‘Heavenly Body’, had set out from Eye in Suffolk. On board was a crew of twelve American airman on a routine night navigation exercise. The usual compliment for an aircraft of this category, would be a crew of ten, but two extra gunnery officers were on board that night, to increase their flying hours. It is believed that it was trying to land at the Caterpillar Plant, Desford, which served as a satellite airfield during the war.

Although the cause of the accident will never be known, eye-witness reports state that the plane seemed to get into trouble, with a possible engine fire, over Desford. It was spotted descending over Bagworth and Barton-in-the-Beans, finally nose-diving into a field on the Ibstock Road. Sadly, none of the crew-members survived the horrific crash.

First on the scene were three local coal miners who were cycling home from work.

They ran across the fields to help, but as they approached the onboard ammunition was exploding and they were unable to get close. One managed to crawl to within eight feet of the plane before being driven back by the intense heat of the burning plane. The three remained at the site until the Fire Brigade and members of the Home Guard arrived at the scene.

The sad task of directing the removal of the earthly remains of the ill-fated airmen from the crash site went on for several days. It was undertaken by medical officer, Flight Lieutenant Anthony Turner, who was based at R.A.F. Desford. They were initially transferred to Coalville mortuary, where the grim process of identification began.

Two of the plane’s engines were recovered relatively soon after the crash, with a third being found by a local farmer in the nearby woods, some years later.

The site subsequently remained untouched until 1997, almost 50 years after the crash. Mr English began to wonder if it would be possible to locate the exact site of the crash and possibly, locate the fourth remaining engine. His interest prompted him to team up with a local metal detecting enthusiast. In the brook that runs through the site, Mark noticed a large twig sticking up out of the water. Upon giving the ‘twig’ a hefty tug, the true nature of the object became clear. Aviation fuel began to bubble up from the bed of the stream in a large quantity and it was soon obvious that this ‘twig’ was actually the fuel line from the doomed bomber. The quantity of fuel was so large that it spread down-stream, with reports of its presence reaching as far as Sutton Coldfield.

With the use of a metal detector, the pair located a very large object buried in the bed of the stream. Judging by its length, they deduced that it must be a wing of the ‘Heavenly Body’. With the use of a digger and at a depth of approximately 18 feet, they discovered that they were correct in their assumption. With the help of fascinated villagers they went on to unearth and recover a 20mm Browning gun and the fourth engine, still in pristine condition after being preserved in oil and mud. These remnants of the plane are now at The Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre, an aviation museum in East Kirkby.

Until this point the quest had really been about the plane itself, but it soon became about the members of the crew who had lost their lives on this, their final flight.

DIARY DATES

Continuing our series of new topical short stories featuring that mischievous rail dog, Ruffle, called ‘Ruffle’s Walks’...

Within each story Ruffle will send a secret word to his readers in the form of underlined, italic capital letters scattered in the text. Once you have found the letters, rearrange them to form a word that is relevant to that month’s story. At the bottom of each story it will tell you how many letters you are looking for. The actual word answer will be shown on page 35. Woof - have fun!

For more information about Ruffle’s storybooks visit www.ruffletheraildog.co.uk

As Ruffle trotted along the platform he could sense by all the activity that something exciting was about to happen at the little heritage railway. There were many people bustling about on the platform next to where the green engine was waiting Patiently, steam slowly spiralling from the blackened funnel.

Ruffle looked round for Eric, the station master who was always happy to welcome Ruffle. Ah! There he was! Ruffle went over to where Eric was standing next to a man on a wooden stepladder. They were busy trying to secure a row of bunting from the lamp over the station door to one of the Iron lampposts in the middle of the platform. Ruffle nudged Eric’s free hand with his wet nose. Eric turned to look at Ruffle.

‘Ruffle! Hello there boy. I can’t stop – we’re busy getting everything ready for our VIP! Off you go, don’t get in the way today, there’s a good dog!’ Eric turned back to help the man on the ladder as they successfully secured one end of the bunting.

Ruffle turned away to look for Ben, the engine driver of the green train. Perhaps Ben would be freE or might even have a little snack for Ruffle...

But Ben was busy arranging a special flower garland on the front of the train. He turned his head briefly as he saw Ruffle approach. ‘Hello Ruffle! Sorry boy, can’t stop – too much to do and too little time before the VIP arrives! Off you go!’

Mmm thought Ruffle, that only left Samantha who looked after the carriages as his last chance of anything to eat! He looked round but couldn’t see her anywhere. Very well he would have a sit down on that lovely soft carpet someone had left in the middle of the platform. He had just chosen the most comfortable Place on the carpet when he heard the familiar voice of Samantha.

‘Ruffle! No you don’t! Off you get, you can’t sit there – you’re right in the middle where the VIP will walk!’ Ruffle quickly jumped off the carpet as Samantha approached.

Alright then, he would go and find a quiet place to lie down inside one of the carriages! Ruffle walked over to one of the open carriage doors and jumped in. All the doors to the compartments were closed except for the last one. Ruffle sniffed at the seat. There was a very soft warm-looking Blanket on the seat – just right for curling up and snoozing on! But as Ruffle jumped up onto the blanket an awful low wheezing, hooting sound came from underneath. Ruffle jumped, his ears flying up at the screeching noise. The more Ruffle tried

to move his paws around the blanket, the more noise the blanket made! He managed to jump off the seat back onto the floor. As he landed on the floor, a man appeared at the door dressed in a tartan kilt and black jacket. He laughed as he reached across and pulled the blanket from the seat.

‘Och! I see you’ve found my bagpipes there – you clever dog! I’d lost them and was beginning to panic – the VIP is about to arrive and I’m supposed to pipe him aboard the train. I’m Sorry the noise startled you, but you’ve definitely saved the day!’ He gently stroked Ruffle’s head.

Then the man carefully lifted the bagpipes and placed the cloth-covered bag under his arm. Three wooden pipes rested Against his shoulder, one pipe next to his face (ready to blow through) and one in his hand ready to pick out the notes. He looked thoughtfully down at Ruffle.

‘How would you like to be my mascot? You could sit next to me as I pipe the VIP aboard!’

Ruffle wagged his tale at the excited tone of the man’s voice.

‘Come on them laddie! We’ll just have time to Get into position!’

And so, to the astonishment of Eric, Ben and Samantha, Ruffle sat proudly on the soft red carpet next to the piper as he played the bagpipes to welcome the VIP aboard the train! Definitely an exciting day!

On October 1st 1919, she was walking down the road when two horses, being taken to be shod by a groom broke free and Daisy rushed towards them and stopped one horse and then steadied the other. The horses belonged to Captain Micklen of Cranford Hall who gave Daisy £5 as a reward.

The incident was witnessed by many who contacted the newspapers and a gentleman called Mr Parker reported it to the Land Army

offices. The Women’s Land Army was demobilised in November and to honour the work done by the women a banquet was held at the Drapers’ Hall in London. Various girls who had done outstanding work or, in the case of Daisy, a heroic act, were invited.

The Drapers Hall belongs to the Drapers Guild. The Guild itself dates back to the 13th century and they bought the premises in Throgmorton Street from Henry VIII, who had acquired it after the execution of the owner the Hall, Thomas Cromwell. Not only were the girls served dinner in these grand surroundings, but they were presented with their Distinguished Service Bar by Princess Victoria, who was accompanied by Princess Mary and Empress Maria Feodovna of Russia. Quite something for an Ibstock girl!

Princess Mary’s biography quotes Princess Victoria as saying’, “I am delighted to have been able to come here this evening to present the Distinguished Service Bars to members of the Land Army. The war work of the women and girls of Great Britain will always be gratefully remembered by their King and Country.”

Unfortunately, Daisy’s medal was lost, so if anyone has any more information or knows of anyone else who received this medal, we would be very happy to hear about it. Daisy’s grandchildren, who live in Ibstock and Market Bosworth, would very much like to see one.

The photo bottom left shows her in the early 1920’s, as Maid of Honour at her brother’s wedding. Daisy lived her retirement in Ibstock and was the first person to move into the Westgate flats on Station Road.

Remembering Daisy Lardner appears in the book ‘Left to Grow Old’ on sale by the society.

‘Brave Land Girl to receive a medal’These were the kind of headlines that appeared in the newspapers up and down the country reaching as far as the Dundee Evening Telegraph. They told the story of an Ibstock girl called Daisy Lardner who lived on Leicester Road. During the First World War she had been sent to work on the land at Finedon, in Northamptonshire, by the Ministry of Agriculture.

MOIRA FURNACE OPENS FOR A NEW SEASON

Moira Furnace Museum and Country Park @MoiraFurnace

Moira Furnace is a rare survivor of the Industrial Revolution in the heart of the National Forest. Visit us to learn about the furnace’s quirky history in our museum, enjoy cycling or walking in our attractive grounds and woodland, or take a relaxing trip on

our canal narrowboat.

Open April - October Charge for museum and boat.

www.moirafurnace.org Moira Furnace, Furnace Lane, Moira DE12 6AT

A small museum… a BIG story The furnace museum has seen a change around with displays being moved and re-grouped and a new interpretations board installed to enhance the visitor experience and create a space which will be used for talks and performances in the future. Extra audio experiences have been added to increase the sense of emersion within the lovingly recreated rooms, such as the bridge-loft and the kitchen. As well as this, the Joseph Wilkes, our canal barge, has been refitted with new seats and will be offering a longer, lunchtime cruise. This will be a chance to sit with your picnic whilst taking in the peace and tranquillity of the canal over 45 minutes as you glide down to Donisthorpe and back.

To kick off the season, on Saturday 23rd March, we will be open for a one-off special event. As well as the museum being open and the boat running, we will be welcoming the Coldstream Guards 1815. These Napoleonic era reenactors will be on site all weekend practicing for their busy season ahead. On the Saturday, visitors are welcomed to look around their encampment, interact with the soldiers and watch as they practice drills and weapons training. If you get hungry, we have

that covered. The wonderful volunteers will be running a BBQ where you can buy something to eat and drink.

The official first open day of the season will be Saturday 6th April. Tickets for the museum this year will be £2.50 for adults and £1.50 for children (3 and under free). These tickets will entitle you to unlimited entry to the museum for the rest of the 2019 season so the sooner you buy them the more value for money you can get. Boat trips are charged separately. All prices can be found on our website.

Moira Furnace is a massively important site. It is a perfect example of early industrial revolution blast furnace technology and has been so well preserved due to the lack of good quality iron produced. You can find out more about this in the museum. The grounds play host to a section of the Ashby canal, restored some years ago, a woodland to explore and many paths and trails with areas of importance to the local wildlife. Areas such as our butterfly bank, give vital habitat to many rare species.

We look forward to welcoming you this year and share our big story within our small museum with you.

Ten members of the Ibstock United Junior FC U9’s Pumas, plus their coaches and parents, were recently lucky enough to take part in a Burton Albion Football Club ‘Matchday Experience’. This gave the team the opportunity to take part in a football session, provided by the Burton Albion Community Trust, on the new Burton Albion Community Football Centre 3G pitch, the home of the Brewers, located at the Pirelli Stadium. Prior to the game, the team were proud to form a guard of honour and also act as flag bearers, as Burton Albion FC and their opponents for the day, Oxford United FC, emerged from the tunnel ready for kick off. It didn’t stop there for the young Pumas, as at half time they were given the opportunity to take penalty kicks against the Burton Albion FC mascots, Billy and Bettie!

A truly wonderful day was had by all and memories were made that will last a lifetime. The strong bond within the group is strengthened further by experiences like these. The coaches are always looking for new ways and ideas to enhance the team’s spirit. The coaches are always keen to acknowledge their gratitude to the clubs highly valued sponsors, for their continued support. Their thanks go out to The George & Dragon at Thringstone, Watling JCB Ltd, Ibstock Brick, Stanton Trading and The Valetman.

Anyone wanting to find out more about sponsoring the team, please contact James Rowley on 07968 333304 for more details.

Ibstock Junior FC @ Burton Albion

Moira furnace has lay dormant over the winter however, the staff and volunteers have not had a rest. Everyone at the 19th Century blast furnace, one of the best preserved of its type in Europe, have been busy preparing for what is hoped to be the best season yet.
