Welcome... to the latest edition of Community Voice!Front Cover Quiz: Spot The Local Landmark...How many of you can spot the landmark from our surrounding area featured on this January issue front cover? If you think you know the answer please send your entry to Graham Tyers at The Voice, c/o 57 High Street, Ibstock, or email him at: [email protected] The winner (drawn first out of the hat of all correct entries) will receive a “Full English” for two at The Old School Tearooms, High Street, Ibstock. Good luck!

Last month’s quiz answer... and winner!A Happy New Year to all our readers! One lucky reader will be starting 2017 with a little treat as Rosemary Goacher successfully recognised last month’s landmark as Calke Abbey. The site was originally Augustinian Priory from the 12th Century until it’s dissolution by Henry VIII. The present building, named Calke Abbey in 1808, was never actually an abbey, but is a Baroque mansion built between 1701 and 1704. The house was owned by the Harpur family for nearly 300 years until it was passed to the Trust in 1985 in lieu of death duties. Today, the house is open to the public and many of its rooms are deliberately displayed in the state of decline in which the house was handed to the Trust. The draw was undertaken by Ian Garside of Rossendale Healing Hands which is based in Ibstock Business Centre and assisted by the lovely Glen, from the Tea Rooms.Rosemary will received a Full English Breakfast or Tea for Two at the Old School Tearooms, High Street, Ibstock.

Aimed at our younger readers, here’s the latest in our series of short stories by author Rachel Greaves, told in rhyme about the adventures of an inquisitive Airedale, Ruffle and his escapades on a steam railway. The full range of these charming story and colouring books can be seen by visiting www.ruffletheraildog.co.uk or emailing [email protected]

But Eric wasn’t there – now where could he be?

Perhaps in the signal box – Ruffle would go and see!

Over to the signal box and up the steps they went,

The bright paw prints showed where Ruffle’s time was spent.

1 2

3 4

Ruffle puts his paw in it!

Along the platform edge had been freshly painted white,

It all looked very smart, gleaming in the bright sunlight.

Satisfied with his work, Eric went back inside the station,

Didn’t see Ruffle approaching hoping Eric had cooked some bacon.

Ruffle didn’t realise that the paint would still be wet,

So walked across the white edge – to the platform he wanted to get.

As he trotted hopefully across to the open store house door,

A trail of perfect paw prints followed upon the platform floor.

For each time Ruffle crossed the fresh white paint,

A new coat painted his toes, giving them a bright white taint.

Coming out of the store, Eric looked on in dismay,

White paw prints all across the platform, going in every way.

Eric followed the prints all over until at last he came,

To Ruffle sitting on a bench as though waiting for a train!

‘Ruffle! I have spent all day painting the white edge bright and new.

But you’ve spread prints on the platform, so the painting I must redo!’

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL OUR CUSTOMERS

Here at The Community Voice, we are delighted to welcome Jayne Massey to our team.

Jayne has lived in the village for many years and has a strong interest in, and enthusiasm for, the local community.

A long-time member of the Management Committee at The Palace, Jayne has seen the building flourish from an empty shell to a thriving community centre at the heart of Ibstock. She is also one of the founder members of ‘The Palace Players’; the drama/pantomime group based at The Palace. Her love for drama has spanned several decades and she has been a member of the Coalville Adult School Drama for over 35 years.

Jayne has previously worked at Ibstock Doctors Surgery for 7 years and also for 3 years with Ibstock Community Enterprises Ltd, at the Business Centre.

Jayne admits that it has always been her secret aspiration to work for a newspaper or magazine, so she is very happy to report that it is never too late in life to realise one’s ambition!

Welcome to Jane

A search on the internet lead Robin to an organisation called ‘Samara’s Aid’. This organisation offers help in getting aid to the ordinary people, in Syria and Iraq, who have been displaced by the fighting there.

‘Samara’s Aid’ was started by a young mother from Brighton. After seeing distressing images on television of people living in appalling conditions she felt compelled to act. She wanted to do whatever she could to get help to these people who are in desperate need of even the basic necessities in life. Realising that the more people that were involved in relief effort, the more effective it would be, Samara appealed for others to become registered collectors in their local areas.

In January 2016, Robin registered herself as a ‘local collector’ and set to work gathering donations in the Ibstock area. Having only recently moved to the area she was concerned that she did not know many people or have many contacts. However, 25 banana

boxes were soon filled with winter clothing, shoes and bedding. By October, another 50 boxes were filled and taken to Hinckley, from where they dispatched to their destination.

Both, St Denys Church, Ibstock and Christ Church, Coalville have helped to raise almost £1000 towards the effort, by holding jumble sales and cake stalls.

The humanitarian project has quickly grown and the amount of vital equipment and much needed aid has proved that people really do want to help however they can. There are lots of ways to get involved and, like Robin, registering as a local collector, is one of them.

To Syria and Iraq......with love from IbstockWhen local lady, Robin Lovell, heard an appeal by Canon Andrew White, also known as the Vicar of Baghdad, for practical help for the besieged citizens of Syria, she started to ponder upon how she could help. Raising funds and collecting donations is a huge task in itself. Transporting aid items 2,500 miles across the globe is quite another!

CARING FOR YOUR TREES

The true identity of St. Valentine is lost in the mists of time. There actually appears to have been more than one saint by the name of

Valentine; possibly three. One story recounts the tale of a priest named Valentine who, on February 14th, in or around 278 AD, was be-headed

on the orders of Emperor Claudius II. It is certainly a long way from the romance, red roses and chocolates with which we associate and

celebrate that date today!

According to one legend, this cruel Emperor believed that Roman men were unwilling to join the army because of their strong attachment

to their wives and families. He decided that the most effective way to deal with this problem was to ban all marriages and engagements

in Rome! Valentine defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret.

Another version of events claims that Valentine was arrested and imprisoned for conducting Christian weddings at a time when

Christians were being persecuted in Rome. When Valentine’s actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be

sentenced to death. Due to the selflessness of his actions, even in the face of grave danger, Valentine was declared a saint.

Legend also has it that whilst in prison, Valentine left a farewell note for the jailer’s daughter, who had become his friend,

and signed it “From Your Valentine”. Thus began the custom of exchanging messages and poems of love and simple gifts, such as

flowers, which continues to this day.

When was the last time yousat and reviewed your

financial future? - We can help!

When Kevin Cunningham and his wife Beverly set up Bleathwood IFA Ltd. in 2009, their main aim was to provide a personal and independent financial advice service which would meet the individual needs of their clients. They appreciate the importance of meeting regularly with their clients and establishing a relationship with them. The ethos of the company is very firmly ‘Advice, not product sales’.

With over 30 years experience in financial services, they are able to provide reliable advice regarding pensions, investments and protection products, such as life insurance and critical illness cover. However, their real focus is helping clients to plan for their financial future; looking at the important factors that help to build life-long financial security. As Kevin says, “The most important things in life are health and wealth – we can help on the wealth side.”

That is why Kevin places such importance on regular meetings at least once a year because things can change for a variety of reasons, health, goals and even regulations. For example, in recent times there has been significant changes to how you can take income from pensions or how you can use Stocks and Shares ISAs. Being local means that Kevin can always pop round if something important changes to offer the best possible advice .

The overwhelming priority of Bleathwood IFA Ltd is to offer sound advice depending on clients personal circumstances and to give realistic ideas as to what returns clients can expect on their investments. Kevin is adamant that this is the only way a trusted relationship can be established with a client, and this approach has born fruit as Kevin has many long term clients who he has been helping for many years.

Kevin is very involved in the local community and is a founder member of a local business networking group which meets every Friday at the George and Dragon, Thringstone. As well as helping local business to support each other, the group raise funds for local charities and food banks.

He has served as the Chairman of the Ashby-de-la-Zouch Choir Concordia for 6 years and also enjoys a bit of singing too!

If you would like to meet with a local, trustworthy financial advisor, to discuss and plan your financial future, contact Kevin Cunningham at Bleathwood IFA Ltd.

A very popular Christmas event took place at The Palace Community Centre, High Street, Ibstock, with Santa greeting lots of young visitors in his ‘fairytale forest grotto’. A delightful backdrop, which combined aspects of several well-loved fairy stories, created an enchanting scene for the occasion. An array of festive stalls tempted customers with a large variety of seasonal gifts and crafts. The organisers of the event aim for traditional attractions, in a relaxed, unhurried atmosphere. The beautiful live harp music certainly helped to smooth away the hustle and bustle of the usual pre-Christmas commotion. Free puppet shows, courtesy of the ‘The Magical Mill’, kept everyone well entertained with their own captivating version of ‘A Christmas Carol’.

The management committee of The Palace Community Centre would like to thank everyone who supported the event and to also extend a big ‘thank you’ to the great team of volunteers who helped to organise and staff the event. If you are interested in finding out more about becoming a member of The Palace volunteer team or other forthcoming events at The Palace, please contact Gary on Tel: 01530 262400.

FANCY PUTTING YoUR BRAIN To THE TEST?Here’s a bit of fun to get you thinking.(Answers on inside back cover - no cheating!)

In February 2012 Ibstock Community Enterprise Ltd, a social enterprise with a board of local, voluntary directors, became the ‘Sub Postmaster’ of the office, in what is a growing trend of communities taking over, running and protecting their own facilities. Being a ‘community run’ Post Office means that every single service used and product purchased helps ensure the continuity of this vital facility to the village.

The Post Office has been at the heart of Ibstock village life for many years and, although it has seen many changes, it has always remained in the same location. It still has a busy sorting office, which serves Ibstock and surrounding villages. The Post Office is the ‘bank’ on the village High Street and provides free cash withdrawals,

cash and cheque deposit and balance requests for all of the main banks.

The Post Office offers not only many Royal Mail and Parcel Force services, but also a huge range of services, right on the door step including:

• Drop & Go

• Vehicle Tax

• Foreign Currency

• Travel Insurance

• Travel Money Card Plus

• National Express - Tickets

• Current Account - Servicing

• Savings application forms

• Lotto

• Dry Cleaning Collection Point

The shop is stocked with an extensive new range of cards, gift wrapping, stationery suitable for home, office and school, confectionary and ‘pocket money’ toys. The Post Office is also a great place to find out useful information such local tradesmen, services available and events taking place in and around the area.

Ibstock Community Enterprises Ltd will be holding an Annual General Meeting in the New Year to discuss post office refurbishment, marketing and plans for the future. We will publish a public notice of invitation shortly. We are always looking for volunteers to help ICE membership is free and we will be appointing new directors in the new year nominated by the membership committee during the AGM.

If you have paid a visit to Ibstock Post Office recently you will, no doubt, have noticed that it has undergone a transformation. This includes a new layout with improved queuing system and a new counter for both the shop and the Post office area. The overall effect is a brighter, more spacious and efficient environment. What you may not be aware of is the fact that Ibstock Post Office is a community run office.

In a previous issue back in June 2016 there was an article concerning Ian Garside, the Ibstock remedial massage therapist who, having suffered an acute attack of sciatic pain in early November 2015, designed and made a specially shaped cushion which when he sat on it proved to be a wonderful relief because it took pressure off the sciatic nerve. His friends called it “Ian’s cushion”.

Following the article in the Community Voice, a large number of sciatica sufferers contacted Ian wanting to trial his cushion, and the results from that trial have been very positive, with more than a 90% success rate in relieving sciatic pain.

Due to this success, Ian formed a company, IGMD Ltd, with two colleagues who have specialised knowledge in the manufacture of cushions and mattresses for the NHS and other health care providers.

Ian stated that “The results (of the trial) were even better than I had expected

and the feedback from the various people who have participated in trialing the cushion was extremely encouraging. It has also helped us refine the design of the cushion. The final design, materials and shape meet both the requirements of a Class 1 medical device and the needs of people who are suffering with sciatica. This design makes the cushion easy to use in any situation where being seated is essential, e.g. driving, sitting at a desk, eating meals with family and friends, etc.”

The cushion helps people to get relief from the debilitating pain of sciatica and helps enable them to return to leading a normal life again.

The design has now been registered in Europe and the USA design registration is pending. There has already been interest from massage and manipulative therapists in the UK and from physiotherapists in the USA.

Ian says “We have now had a number of prototype cushions manufactured which, as you can see, are heart shaped, which

is a coincidence as a number of people who have had the benefit of using the cushion have gone on to say how much they love it.”

The company has now finalised the design and will be starting its first production run in the New Year. The first cushions will go on sale in early February 2017, and currently they are busy finalising the marketing. They are excited about 2017 and the launch of this revolutionary designed cushion.

If you have a sciatic back problem and would like more information about the Sciatic Pain Relief Cushion please contact Ian Garside e-mail [email protected]

Ian Garside is a Member of the National Association of Massage and Manipulative Therapists.

There is at last a realisation that people learn in different ways and the Government’s priority is to ensure that there are routes into all occupations through an apprenticeship. As John Hibbard of IMPACT Apprenticeships explains, hiring an apprentice could be just the route for business to recruit, train and keep staff when we have the lowest unemployment figures for 10 years. This means that a business can recruit an apprentice in any sector from construction, to legal or finance services, from nursing to space engineering– and almost anything in between. Apprentices can gain qualifications from Level 2 (school leavers at 16) right up to degree and post graduate apprenticeships but without the student debt!

With young people becoming ever more savvy in their career choice and understanding of their options - now is the time for employers to get ahead of the game and start planning their own apprenticeship programme to meet their skills gaps. From May 2017, the way apprenticeships are funded is changing. Employers with a payroll in excess of £3m will have to pay a levy which will be used to fund any apprenticeship training. Employers with a payroll which is less than £3m, will have 90% of the apprenticeship funded by the government. There will be financial incentives for employers who take on a 16 -18 year old and those who employ less than 50 people.

HOWEVER, if you recruit an 16-18 year old apprentice before April 2017 the government will fully fund the training, so why wait?

With 89% of employers reporting that an apprentice has helped improve their productivity and 83% of apprentices saying that an apprenticeship improved their career prospects, this could be a match made in heaven.

90% of apprentices will stay with the company that trained them, so a company’s investment in training is recouped very quickly.

Whether you are a young person looking for the first step into a career or a business planning their skills strategy, contact IMPACT Apprenticeships to find out more.

SwepStone Village ChriStmaS ‘SwitCh-on’The Swepstone village Christmas lights ‘switch-on’ took place on Sunday 27th November 2016 at St Peter’s Church. Around 250 people assembled in the churchyard to enjoy a festive treat of mulled wine or hot chocolate, accompanied by home-made mince pies. After community carol-singing, the winner of the raffle to be this year’s ‘Switcher-On’, Mr James Hunt of Snarestone, had the honour of turning on the illuminated stars on all four sides of the church tower. The church doors were thrown open and people were able to take their first look at the Christmas Tree Festival. Each tree was created by a business or community group with themes appropriate to their activities. Brenda Sumner (Parish Councillor and church member) led a large team of dedicated helpers and volunteers to deliver this highly enjoyable community event.

If you look closely at the photograph, just above the apex of the roof, you will see the stars of the Plough plus a genuine shooting star, descending appropriately for the occasion! Wonderful photography by Louise at CameraChic, Newton Burgoland.
