Last month’s quiz answer... and winner! Many of our readers were able to correctly identify last month’s mystery landmark as the ruined Augustinian Priory, founded 1239-41 by Roesia de Verdon, at Grace Dieu, Thringstone. It was dissolved in October 1538 and is reputed to be one of the most haunted places in Leicestershire.

This month’s prize has been won by Kellie-Anne Bennett and our picture shows the prize draw being performed by Sue Stanyard of Lakeside Wills (see her advert on page 21).

Let’s see how well you do with our next landmark!

WHITWICK’S SILVER STREET – SERVING THE LOCAL COMMUNITYA chance remark by a visitor to the Old Station led to this month’s article from Whitwick Historical Group. Our visitor had been told that not so very long ago, Whitwick residents could buy all they needed for everyday life without leaving the village. Confident that this was correct, we decided to search for evidence and “Kelly’s Directory” for 1935 was the place to look.

Kelly’s Directories are a vital source of information. For each settlement there is a descriptive passage followed by a list of prominent inhabitants for the year in question and information on all commercial activities. It is this last resource which gives an invaluable “snapshot” of manufacturing, commerce, public buildings and services. One of Whitwick’s main thoroughfares, Silver Street, was selected. The results confirmed our initial thoughts and astounded the team of volunteers.

In addition to the Picture House, Dr Prys-Jones’ Surgery, Whitwick Constitutional Club, The King’s Arms public house and the branch of Coalville Working Men’s Co-operative Society Ltd, there were twenty-six businesses in Silver Street in 1935. These included: three fried fish dealers; three shops where boots and shoes were sold and repaired; two hairdressers; two butchers; one baker; one greengrocer and one wheelwright and undertaker. Five “shopkeepers” are recorded along with a grocer, a fruiter, a beer retailer and, intriguingly, a “marine store dealer”. Businesses providing a service included a painter, a dairyman, a music teacher and a carter. Interestingly, eight of the twenty-six businesses were owned by women.

Shops were closed on Wednesday afternoons and, as a general rule, no shops opened on Sundays. Otherwise, Silver Street must have been extremely busy. No ordinary homes had fridges or freezers so food shopping had to be done more frequently than is usual today. Now we can buy almost anything at a supermarket; a shopping trip in the 1930s would have involved calling at a variety of shops to buy all that was needed. Inside the shops, customers were served by staff from behind a counter and the choice of goods available would seem very limited to modern shoppers.

Older readers will recall some of the Silver Street business proprietors’ names such as Aris, Baxter, Briers, Greasley, Haslegrave, O’Meara, Pegg & Sons, Toon, Vesty and West. It is likely that families were loyal to individual businesses and, being regular customers, would mean the possibility of chat or even the exchange of gossip during the transactions.

This month’s photograph from our archive shows a view of Silver Street from the Market Place end. It was taken in the 1950s but several shops can still be seen. On the left-hand side, the name “O’Meara” is visible on the wall of the second shop and the barber’s striped pole is in place at Greasley’s hairdresser shop. Both the photograph and “Kelly’s Directory” gave WHG volunteers an opening for sharing pleasant memories of a vanished era.

If this type of local social history is appealing and you would like to browse through the trade directories or have your own memories or photographs, the team at the Old Station would be delighted to meet you.

Whitwick and District U3A will hold its monthly General Meeting on Friday 12th April. Please note that this is a week earlier than usual due to the date of Good Friday. At the General Meeting, members and visitors will have opportunities to meet Group Leaders and others who will be delighted to pass on information about this thriving U3A. There is a wide range of Interest Groups all based on the self-help ethos where retired people can find companionship through learning and social activities. Everyone is assured of a warm welcome. The U3A is a non-political and non-religious organisation. The speaker at the April meeting will be Celia Singer with a presentation entitled “Calke Abbey Revealed – A Family Story”. Calke Abbey has been called “The House that Time Forgot” and Celia will give an insight into why such a great house declined and details of the family that called it home. Ten generations of Baronets lived at Calke during changing times. In 1985, the National Trust acquired the “Un-stately Home” and began a policy of repair and conservation. It should be a fascinating story. To listen to Celia and find out more about Whitwick and District U3A, come along to St. David’s Church Hall, Broom Leys, Coalville LE67 4RL. Please arrive at 1.45 for a 2.00pm start. Alternatively, search online for www.whitwicku3a.org.uk where full details of Whitwick and District U3A are available

KNOW WHAT YOUR PARISH COUNCIL CAN DO ……(OR WHO ELSE DOES)

News from your Parish Council – April 2019

PARKING PROBLEMS Did you know………..

…….when an obstruction is being caused that a report can be made to the police? It is helpful to have full details when you ring 101 (eg make, model, registration number of the vehicle and colour.) Please don’t stop or park near a school entrance, blocking a pavement, anywhere you would prevent access for Emergency Services, within 6 metres of a bus stop, opposite or within 10 metres (32 feet) of a junction, near the brow of a hill or hump bridge, opposite a traffic island or another parked vehicle, where there is a dropped kerb for wheelchairs, in front of an entrance, on a bend or where it would obstruct a cyclist from using cycle facilities. The Parish Council is trying to encourage everyone to think more carefully about where they park their vehicle. 2 MAY 2019 Remember to take your polling card

as ID.

Each year an Annual Electors Meeting is held to report on activities of the parish council since last May. This is being held on Thursday 23 May at 7 pm at Park Hall. An opportunity is also given to local community groups to report on their activities. Come along and hear what’s been happening.

COUNCIL MEETINGS COMING UP ARE 18 APRIL & 16 MAY HELD ON THURSDAYS AT 7.00PM AT PARK HALL, WHITWICK PARK, NORTH STREET, LE67 5HB

There is a Business Focus Team at the Disrict Council which can help with 1:1 start-up support, ideas to grow your business and some staff training. Why not call 01530 454594 to find out more?

We send a warm welcome to JR Landscaping & Property Maintenance From 1st April we have a new company looking after the parish council parks and open spaces. The company and their staff will be out and about every week as well as in Whitwick Park so do say hello to the new team if your paths cross.

The social mornings are a chance for our customers to get together, hear what’s new with the holidays and day trips and enjoy a game of bingo and a light buffet lunch, followed by a raffle. All money raised from the bingo and raffle is then divided and donated to three chosen local charities.

Our chosen charities for last year were Hospice Hope, Olivia’s Journey and the Air Ambulance, who all received a cheque for £300.00.

On Tuesday, 12th March, we were very lucky to have Hospice Hope attend our last social morning before the summer. It was wonderful for our customers to find out exactly what happens to their donations and to find out more about the great work that the charity does.

Samantha Woolley, Customer Experience Manager at Roberts Travel Group said “We are extremely grateful for the generosity and kindness of our passengers. It is great for us all to be able to support such wonderful local charities.”

Our chosen charities for this year are The Charlie Round Foundation, Loros and Helping Hathern Dogs. We look forward to continuing our social mornings in October and raising money for some amazing charities.

Our next social morning is 15th October, if you would like to attend, please give us a call on 01530 816 425.

ROBERTS TRAVEL GROUPCUSTOMERS RAISE £900.00 FOR LOCAL CHARITIES

Everyone was ‘seeing red’ on this year’s red nose day as local schools took part in variety of fund-raising activities. The money raised by Red Nose Day does incredible things, both at home in the UK and across the world’s poorest communities.

• WHITWICK ST JOHN THE BAPTIST C OF E PRIMARY SCHOOL raised a terrific £665.80. This included the sale of 360 red noses! The children enjoyed a non-uniform day, in return for a donation.

• WHITWICK HOLY CROSS SCHOOL raised a total of £66.45 for the charity.

• SWANNINGTON C OF E PRIMARY SCHOOL raised an amazing £140.00. Not a bad effort, as there are only 88 children at the school! They bought and wore red noses during the day and dressed in red.

Well done to all who donned their RED NOSE and did their bit to make the world a brighter place!

Many GP surgeries nowadays have a patient participation group. These are made up of volunteer patients working with the practice manager, and they meet on a regular basis to talk about the services provided and how improvements can be made for the benefit of all the patients and the practice.

So what do they do? Each group is unique and has its own priorities. Below are some examples of what they offer:

• Advising the practice on the patient perspective

• Organising health promotion events

• Supporting patients with walking groups, coffee mornings and befriending

• Carrying out the patient satisfaction survey

• Attending networking events to share good practice

• Influencing the wider NHS.

PPG’s often need new members to do this important and rewarding work, as does ours at present. If you think you may like to join our friendly and purposeful group, why not contact the practice manager for a chat?

Arranging her own daughter’s wedding was the spur that led to Dawn Baker establishing Renaissance Boutique in April 2011. Her Coalville based shop offers exclusive fashion at very attractive prices. One of Coalville’s best kept secrets, this wonderful shop, situated at 12c Belvoir Road, has a growing reputation as the place to go for that ‘something special’.

With her relaxed approach, Dawn has a gift of putting people at their ease. As she says, ‘’some people are very nervous when they come into the shop as they feel out of their comfort zone. I tell them to take their time and I am on hand to offer advice if required. Sometimes a customer can visit the shop two or three times before they decide on a purchase. This is fine by me, as long as they are happy with their eventual outfit.’’

A special SHOWCASE OPEN DAY IS NOW TO TAKE PLACE ON SUNDAY 14TH APRIL from 11.00am until 3.00pm to promote the wide variety of amazing outfits on display. With an array of top brands to choose from, Renaissance caters for the Mother Of The Bride, Bridesmaids and Flower Girls. ‘Rainbow Shoes and Handbags’, can be dyed to match any colour and Dawn offers FREE HAT OR FASCINATOR HIRE with a matching handbag, for every wedding outfit chosen. A 10% reduction applies when four or more wedding outfits are purchased.

An extensive range of Cameron Ross Men’s Formal Hire is available for the Groom, Best Man and Ushers and once again you will receive one suit free of charge should you hire five or more men’s formal suits.

So, if a wedding is on the horizon, this showcase is a ‘must’ and not to be missed!

PERSONAL INJURY & CLINICAL NEGLIGENCE SPECIALISTS

The search is on for young people in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland to join our Volunteer Police Cadet (VPC) programme. We’re inviting young people aged 13 to 17 years to gain an unrivalled insight into local policing, and learn new skills and knowledge, while helping their community.

Recruits will be trained by cadet leaders and will be given the opportunity to get involved with policing across the whole county, while following the national VPC programme.

If you know a young person who may benefit from joining us as a cadet, please encourage them to sign up, as it really could change their life. We want to give young people a voice, and ensure that cadets represent the diversity of their service area.

The VPC is designed to provide a safe environment in which young people can learn as individuals, develop positive relationships with

the police, and actively support their community.

Don’t worry if you are not between 13-17 years, we also have Police support volunteers (PSVs) who are members of the public who give their time in a diverse range of roles to complement the duties performed by police officers and staff. This helps free up officers and staff to perform key operational duties.

Volunteers and the work they carry out is not to replace employees; the underlying principle of the agreement is that volunteers compliment and support staff roles.

Being a volunteer provides a unique opportunity for individuals to use their skills, experience and local knowledge to make a positive contribution in their community by supporting the work we do. Volunteers will be given resources to carry out their role effectively and we will ensure, through induction and training, they are properly integrated into the organisation.

PSVs typically offer between two and four hours a week and are given the support and resources they need to carry out their role.

We are looking to recruit more than 230 police officers over the next financial year to help keep our communities safe.

Police officer recruiting will open again with the successful candidates starting their training in February and March 2020.

To apply you have to be between 18 and 57; have a level 3 qualification or equivalent or be a PCSO/Special constable accredited; hold a full UK/EU valid manual driving licence and not have any serious convictions or recent cautions.

This is the last time this route into policing will be offered. Keep an eye on this web page www.leics.police.uk and on our Facebook and Twitter social media channels for details when the application period opens. There are events on now in the county go along and find out!

FUNDRAISING PLANT SALES FOR THE COLEORTON AND NEW LOUNT VOLUNTEER GROUP

Plant Sale at New Lount 2018

MULTI-USE GAMES AREA AVAILABLE TO HIRE IN THRINGSTONEThringstone Primary School was pleased to receive funding to create a Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA) in its extensive grounds last year and it is now available to hire to sports groups in the community.

Whilst the MUGA has huge benefits for pupils at the school, it was also created to give the local community a space to rent for sports teams and groups. The MUGA can be hired out for private use by local organised sports groups during evenings and weekends and the addition of flood lighting means that it can be used all year round.

The MUGA is an all-weather outdoor pitch, with an artificial turf surface, suitable for various sports and games, such as football, basketball, netball and tennis. The area is used during the day by pupils at the school in PE lessons and in lunchtime and after school clubs and it is a fantastic resource to allow the children to access games and sports every day, whatever the weather.

For more information about hiring this brand new sports facility, please contact Rachel Gascoigne via the school office by either email [email protected] or by phone 01530 222489.

Thringstone Primary School has also recently received the exciting news that it has been awarded £7,500 from The Aviva Community Fund to develop an outdoor imagination area. The project was selected as a judge’s choice winner, having already received over 1,000 votes from parents and the local community.

I B S T O C K T I L E A N D B A T H R O O M S L T D

A friendly, family run business celebrating 25 years of great customer service!Continuing our series of new topical short stories featuring that mischievous rail dog, Ruffle, called ‘Ruffle’s Walks’...

Within each story Ruffle will send a secret word to his readers in the form of underlined, italic capital letters scattered in the text. Once you have found the letters, rearrange them to form a word that is relevant to that month’s story. At the bottom of each story it will tell you how many letters you are looking for. The actual word answer will be shown on page 27. Woof - have fun!

For more information about Ruffle’s storybooks visit www.ruffletheraildog.co.uk

The little heritage railway was busy getting ready for the Easter holiday trains. Each year Eric organised an Easter egg hunt for the children around the station garden and little wood adjacent to the station. He was busy counting a selection of chocolate eggs resting upon a large wooden Trestle table on the station platform before he would then set off to hide them. To save waste the eggs were not in boxes but just wrapped in shiny coloured paper. But as you probably know, oval eggs have a tendency to roll so Eric had to work hard to balance them carefully to prevent any eggs from escaping!

Ruffle appeared as Eric finished counting the eggs and immediately caught sight of the shiny ball-like objects on the table. He jumped up, putting his large hairy paws On the front of the table to have a closer look at the interesting shapes. But his weight upset the carefully balanced eggs and they began to roll in all directions to the dismay and annoyance of Eric.

‘Ruffle! It took me ages to balance those Eggs on the table. It’s taken you five seconds to disarrange them!’

Ruffle quickly jumped back down And began to chase after an egg that was now rolling slowly along the platform. The egg stopped rolling at Ruffle’s paws. Ruffle bent and gave it a nudge with his nose which sent the egg rolling back in the direction of the table. Then Ruffle spotted another large egg under the table. He reached under the table with a long front leg and tried to hook the egg with his paw. This made the shiny Oval shape spin furiously under the table. Meanwhile, Eric had managed to rearrange the rest of the eggs which were now under control on the table top. He quickly reached down to grab the spinning egg before Ruffle nudged it again.

‘No you don’t!’ cried Eric with satisfaction that he had retrieved the last egg before Ruffle. ‘You’ll break them with your Large

feet and nose! Wait a minute though – you can help after all!’

Eric disappeared into the station, returning a couple of minutes later with a large wicker basket that had a handle which looped over the top. Eric wrapped a soft cloth around the Handle then held the basket out to Ruffle so that the handle was easily grabbed.

‘Carry, Ruffle, carry!’

Ruffle had been taught to take things in his mouth and carry them on command. He obediently took the basket from Eric.

‘Good boy, Ruffle! You can help me to carry the eggs that we will hide for the Easter Egg Hunt!’ Eric gave Ruffle a pat then gently took the basket from Ruffle to fill it with a few of the Chocolate shapes. Eric then put the remaining eggs in a large cardboard box that he would carry.

‘Come on then Ruffle! Let’s decide where we’re going to hide these eggs!’

Eric set off with Ruffle proudly trotting beside him Carrying the basket of shiny eggs. Now where would be good hiding places for the shiny oval treasures…?

Commemorating the centenary of the discovery that captivated the world, the largest collection of King Tutankhamun’s treasures ever to travel outside of Egypt opens at the Saatchi Gallery in London for a limited period and this is your chance to see it. The exhibition is open from 2nd November 2019- 3rd May 2020.

The TUTANKHAMUN: Treasures of the Golden Pharaoh world tour features more than 150 original artefacts from Tutankhamun’s tomb, with 60 on their first journey outside Egypt. Visitors can discover the legend of the golden king before the historic treasures return to Cairo to be permanently housed with Tutankhamun’s full collection at the new Grand Egyptian Museum.

The legend of Tutankhamun captured imaginations globally when, in 1922 his tomb was unearthed by British explorer Howard Carter and financier Lord Carnarvon. An instant worldwide sensation, public fascination surrounding the boy king - and the only Ancient Egyptian royal tomb ever found intact - has continued for decades, with exhibitions in 1972 and 2007 drawing record crowds of well over one million visitors in London. Those exhibitions contained under 55 items from Tutankhamun’s tomb.

Certain strange events are said to have happened after the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb and removal of items from it. The media at the time put this down to The Curse of Tutankhamun or the Pharaoh’s Curse. Financial support for the project that later led to Howard Carter’s discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb came from Lord Carnarvon. However, in April 1923, seven weeks after the official opening of Tutankhamun’s burial chamber, Carnarvon died after a mosquito bite on his cheek became infected. After lifting Tutankhamun’s death mask, it was found that the pharaoh himself had a lesion in the same place on his cheek. At the same time of Carnarvon’s death, the lights in Cairo went out (although this apparently was a fairly common occurrence) and back at home in England, Lord Carnarvon’s dog Susie howled and dropped dead. Also quite spooky was the fact that Howard Carter’s pet canary was eaten by a snake on the day of the opening of the tomb. The media speculated that a number of people involved with the opening of Tutankhamun’s tomb died shortly afterwards, but tend to ignore the fact the majority actually survived to a ripe old age, and most of those that died shortly afterwards were quite elderly or in poor health anyway.

Whilst out walking his dog, Lance, in nearby woodland, local resident Mr George Stain spotted what he thought at first to be another dog walker or rambler wearing a large green coat, coming towards him through the trees. It wasn’t until he got nearer that he realised that it wasn’t a person at all, but a large creature, moving on two muscular hind legs, with two smaller legs or arms at chest height, looking, in George’s own words, ‘like a small upright dinosaur!’. Despite his shock, he valiantly managed to snap a few hurried photos of the creature on his phone. It seemed to become aware of his presence and lumbered away into the undergrowth, leaving him feeling rather stunned by the experience.

‘’I have always been cynical about sightings of mysterious creatures and reports of unexplained phenomena, but having witnessed this myself, this is ALL the PROOF I need!’’ said George.

Despite a large scale search of the area, there have been no further sightings and apart from a few broken and apparently charred branches and leaves, the creature seems to have disappeared in a puff of smoke!

As we don’t want this mystery to drag on, The Community Voice are offering a chocolatey, egg-shaped reward to anyone who can shed any light on this strange case, so if you have an information, please get in touch.

Having lived in the lovely village of Snarestone for over 20 years, James and Tracy Hunt were incredibly lucky to be able to purchase the fields where the tea room, shop and Alpaca Farm now stand.

They decided to start a smallholding under the watchful eye of retired farmer Harold Thorp who taught them a great deal. Harold’s reward was seeing them develop and along the way they have bred chickens, pigs, ducks and of course, Alpacas. They have also rescued many animals who were in dire need of a good home and today their family also includes donkeys, pigs and Angora goats. It is fair to say that all their animals have their own little character, so a family trip to the farm is always interesting!

The tea room itself is a magical, bespoke building of pine logs, which have been carefully milled to sit tightly together and so require no insulation. To be eco – friendly, all the rain water goes straight into their ponds, they recycle as much as possible and compost almost everything. To add to this, they employ ground source heating system which is pumped into the building at the wool shop end and works like a fridge in reverse!

Tracy and James have gone to great lengths to ensure that the food in the tea room is of the highest quality and the wonderful cakes and pastries on display mean that their customers are in for a delightful treat. They also cater for various dietary requirements, afternoon teas and a Sunday roast that has received excellent reports. Part of the building is devoted to the wool shop where they have a cosy corner for knitting and nattering plus lots of lovely wool and craft items on offer including their own Alpaca wool.

Please check out their facebook page for details about their theme nights. The recent ‘Fawlty Towers’ evening was an hilarious event with members of the staff adopting the characters from the iconic TV series. Other events are planned throughout the year, so keep your eyes on social media and of course The Community Voice for forthcoming events.

All in all, a trip to Snarestone Alpaca Farm will always be a special experience with something different on offer for all age groups.

I started my nurse training in 2002, but I have been working with vulnerable adults and children since a teenager. Once qualified I worked with adults for some time, and I was up until recently employed as a Neonatal Nurse caring for sick and terminal term and pre-term babies, before deciding to develop my career in Tongue-Tie whilst juggling my own two children. I have qualified as a ‘Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) and I also volunteer for the Association of Breastfeeding Mothers (ABM) as a breastfeeding counsellor, where I currently volunteer to ‘man’ the National Breastfeeding Helplines.

I have also more recently developed my skills and became a qualified baby massage, baby yoga, and toddler yoga instructor, which I am finding is a new and exciting venture, but also helps parents to help their infants through relieving many of the symptoms that a tongue tie restriction may cause, such as colic, wind, crying, digestive issues, relaxation, and teething issues, whilst increasing and empowering the parental-infant relationship through trust and bonding.

In 2012 I had my first daughter, who had a congenital posterior tongue tie restriction. At the time, I did not know what a tongue tie was or how it could be treated. I believed the breastfeeding issues were because I could not breastfeed properly/low-supply, and was faced with comments of “formula never did such-and-such any harm” ,”don’t struggle, some people just can’t do it” or “give yourself a rest and give her a bottle”. Although these were harmless comments, it just made me more determined to prove everybody wrong!

For me, I wanted to know why she couldn’t breastfeed and not alternative feeding options!

My daughter did have formula via bottles at stages in our feeding journey, and was bottle fed formula in the initial weeks as there was no other way she could take nutrition safely. I am not adverse to bottle-feeding, I just believe that parents should be able to make an informed choice of how their child is fed, and that early problems in the chosen method should be identified swiftly and addressed. If a parent chooses to bottle fed their infant, and struggles as a result of the tongue tie; their alternative feeding methods are limited, and the parents deserve a right to make an informed choice on behalf of their child.

A tongue function restriction affects all methods of infant feeding, breast, bottles and transitioning onto solid foods is inclusive in this.

I sought advice from the local infant feeding team, and at 5 weeks old my daughter saw a tongue tie practitioner, which was snipped by 8 weeks. I chose to attend weekly breastfeeding support groups for over a year, and what I learnt through them was invaluable, as well as meeting new friends where we could share common interests with. I will never forget our experience and it was this that drove me to pursue tongue tie restriction training.

All too often I see infants who have been prescribed medications to control/relieve their symptoms-yet without addressing the root cause of the symptoms how can that medication be expected to improve their health?

In 2016, I had my second daughter, who also had a posterior frenular restriction. This time I knew what to be mindful of, and she had her restriction divided a lot sooner. However, our feeding journey took a lot longer so we sought the assistance of an approved infant cranial-practitioner, and by 10 weeks she could latch and feed well (previously could not latch at all).

So I truly do know what you are going through, I can sympathise, empathise and recognise all of your emotions and frustrations.

All of my credentials, including a Care Quality Commission (CQC) registration certificate; are available upon request and many are displayed on the clinic walls for viewing.

I am now in a position where I can hold clinics, or provide a home-visiting service.

This allows for greater flexibility for appointment availability, but also allows for the appointment to be held in a warm and comforting environment, this includes baby massage and yoga which is available as a class or as a 1:1 private session in your home.

Our over 50’s Table Tennis Club started at the Marlene Reid Centre in Coalville in April 2014, on Wednesday afternoons. Numbers gradually increased until, a year later, the club was offered the opportunity to rent the village hall in Swannington. This is a better venue with good parking.

The club still plays on Wednesday afternoons from 2pm to 4pm and has become so popular that numbers now are higher than ever. Because some members are keen to play more than once a week, we have recently added a second session on Monday afternoons, also 2pm till 4pm.

The club members are of mixed abilities and ages from 60 to 85! Some members have mobility issues and they find that playing table tennis helps keep them fit and active, both physically and mentally.

Ours is a very friendly, social club and whilst we are competitive, we do not play in leagues or against other clubs. Games are usually played as doubles and we encourage members to play with different partners as much possible.

Members also appreciate the social side of the club, with the chance to chat as well as play, plus birthday celebrations and other social events such as a lunch at Christmas.

WRITE TO FIND YOUR VOICEAbout this time last year, I went into a local post office carrying several large brown, cardboard-backed envelopes. The woman behind the counter weighed them and then having noticed that each one was addressed to a different book publisher asked me “Have you written a book?” I told her that I had written a children’s book and was hoping to find a publisher who would want to produce it.

She quickly volunteered the fact that she was looking for a way to produce a bound collection of the stories that her grandmother had written and which the family had discovered only recently following her death. They were not interested to sell the stories but rather wanted them as keepsakes for family members and friends of their grandmother. I advised her as best I could.

Many people have ambitions in relation to writing. Some long to write the next ‘Harry Potter’ or ‘50 Shades of Grey’, whilst others would be more than happy to see their memoirs or a poetry anthology in print. Some individuals have no such lofty aims but merely write for the pleasure of expressing themselves or feel they have an important message to pass on through the written word. Of course, writing can be very therapeutic, helping us to deal with trauma or explore experie nces we don’t feel able to talk about.

If you recognise yourself in any of these examples, if you do write or want to write perhaps you would consider joining a writer’s group. You will find and give support, ideas, information and gentle critiques – oh and have quite a lot of fun too!

We meet on the first Tuesday of each month at 7pm at the Birch Tree pub, Bardon Road. Please contact me if you would like to know more.
