Welcome... to the latest edition of Community Voice!Front Cover Quiz: Spot The Local Landmark...How many of you can spot the landmark from our surrounding area featured on the front cover? If you think you know the answer please send your entry to Graham Tyers at The Voice, c/o 57 High Street, Ibstock, or email him at: [email protected] The winner (drawn first out of the hat of all correct entries) will receive a “Full English” for two at The Old School Tearooms, High Street, Ibstock. Good luck!
Last month’s front cover quiz answer and winner:That’s more like it! Following on from our single entry to last month’s competition, I said we would make it easier this month and we received a lot more replies this time. In fact, we made it so easy, the village name is actually carved into the post itself and is visible in the photograph! I wonder how many of you actually spotted this?
The landmark featured is in Carlton, opposite the Gate Hangs Well. This month’s winner is Mr G Mayes of Ibstock who wins a Breakfast for Two at The Old School Tearooms, Ibstock. The draw was made by local author Rachel Greaves, assisted by Sheryl from the Tearooms. Watch out for further information about Rachel in future issues of ‘The Voice’ regarding her charming Ruffle The Rail Dog books.
Well done to Mr Mayes and good luck with next month’s landmark!

On Saturday, 18th June, the world famous Pelenna Valley Welsh Male Voice Choir is to give a concert at The Palace, High Street, Ibstock. This is a very welcome return visit and will be the 6th concert that the choir have given in Ibstock. The choir was founded in 1980 in the small village of Tonmawr, resulting from a conversation at the local rugby club and have gone from strength to strength. They have appeared on the BBC’s ‘Song’s of Praise’ and have a long association with world renowned mezzo-soprano Katherine Jenkins, who grew up near to their home town. They also performed at the 70th birthday of Hollywood star Sir Anthony Hopkins.
Anyone who has ever been to one of the Pelenna Valley Male Voice Choir’s concerts will know that they are unlike most concerts! For a start, they usually describe their concerts as having 3 halves! One ‘half’ before the interval and one ‘half’ after the interval followed by the third ‘half’ after ‘the concert’. This is an informal, and often impromptu, time of singing, when the choir take off their jackets and bow ties and just sing for the love of singing.
Concert starts at 7.30 pm. Tickets: £10.00 from The Palace Tel: 01530 262400 or Halls, High Street, Ibstock, Tel: 01530 260460. Tickets can be purchased ‘on the door’ (subject to availability). Please check with ticket outlets to avoid disappointment.

Sunday 10th July 2016, marks the 102nd Anniversary for the Ashby Show and for the fourth year in succession it is to be held at Cattows Farm at Heather which has proved to be a very popular venue.
The Ashby de la Zouch & District Agricultural Society was formed in 1833 with the first ever show being held on Ashby’s Bath Ground. It later moved to Calke Abbey and then Measham Lodge Farm before being moved to Cattows, which has proved a huge improvement for the success of the show.
With the prime intention to retain our agricultural heritage, the Ashby Show prides itself on offering something for everyone to ensure a wonderful day out for all the family. The show revolves around the Cattle, Sheep, Horse & Ponies, plus the Show Jumping classes which attract exhibitors from all over the country with an exciting and varied display of entertainment in the main ring such as Shire Horses, Vintage Tractors and modern machinery.
Later a display of Monster Trucks jumping over cars and crushing cars will add to the excitement with the massive 7.5 tonne ‘Grim Reaper’ being driven by Karen Shutler – the only female monster truck driver in Europe.
A wide variety of Trade Stands will be on show as well as Bouncy Castles, Climbing Walls and Donkey Rides for the children, plus lots of small animals to cuddle. Additionally there will be Sheep Shearing demonstrations, Duck Herding by Border Collies and a wide variety of floats, all of which ensures there’s plenty going on throughout the day!
The 1211 (Swadlincote) Squadron Marching Band will both open and close the proceedings so everything is in place to make this year the most successful show to date so be sure to be there!

Jo’s blogI’ve really enjoyed my past month of golf - however did not think I’d be wearing a wooly hat and gloves in the middle of May! The highlight for me was the family fun Golfer/Non Golfer day yesterday. I played with my son Tom and we did really well together, and managed not to fall out once, we didn’t win but it was a lovely fun afternoon. We played with Tracey and her family, it was lovely to see lots of young children all over the golf course and was a lot louder than usual.
Tracy’s blogWell at least I have managed to get the clubs out this month after a very frustrating April. This is my favourite time of the year at Willesley as the bluebells are out in force and they carpet so much of our beautiful woodlands. And they always come out especially for our ladies invitation competition, where the lady members of Willesley invite friends that they have made along the way playing golf around the county. For the fifth year running my invitee was Clare who plays at Birstall, and whom I met over 20 years ago. We played in a team of 4 with Jane and Sally and for the first time in a while the sun shone and it was a glorious day. There was also the fact that we came third in the competition and we came away with some vouchers for John Lewis and a lovely candle! Even though I have been playing golf for nearly 40 years, this month saw the first time I have played in a competition where there is a golfer and non-golfer taking part. We played 8 holes and my partner was my 12 year old son, who did all the putting. Although we didn’t win, it was a such a lovely day, and made more special seeing the children taking part. I managed to persuade my husband to walk around with us and he really enjoyed it. Afterwards we sat outside on the terrace enjoying our bbq, when my husband announced that he thought he would like to be a member at Willesley because the beer was fabulous!

The long haired lover from Liverpool and the man from Amarillo meet in Coalville!Did you think your eyes were deceiving you if you were in Coalville Town Centre on 22 April? Could it really have been Jimmy Osmond and Tony Christie on the High Street?
Well it was them indeed! They were, in fact, visiting Kats Antique Vintage and Collectables Centre to film a new series of BBC’s Celebrity Antiques Road Trip.
The staff said that they had a fantastic day filming and they had lots of fun with the special celebrity guests as well as the antique experts Catherine Southon and Margie Cooper.
In early November 2015, whilst returning from a trip to Lancashire, Ian began to feel the onset of Sciatic pain. Unfortunately, due to an accident on the M6. Ians’s journey was prolonged by several hours and by the time he reached the Coalville/ Ashby exit the pain was in his own words “OFF THE RICHTER SCALE”!
Once home he found that by walking around, the pain gradually subsided but that sitting was a definite NO! As time passed Ian found he could sit on his hard office chair for short periods but that getting up and down was agony.
Three weeks later he was desperately searching the internet for some kind of relief cushion without success. However, he found that when seated on the toilet (don’t laugh) the pain was considerably less than when seated on a chair, even with a cushion.
This set him thinking and after several days he had designed and made a cushion to a certain shape which when he sat on it proved to be a wonderful relief. Because it took pressure off the sciatic nerve he could finally sit down for a meal and even sit as a passenger in a car for short periods. His friends called it “Ian’s Cushion”
One of those friends was an HGV driver who had been suffering from excruciating pain day after day for several months but after using Ian’s cushion for several weeks he was able to stop taking any pain killers.
Because of this success, Ian decided to market the cushion and formed a company. Several trials have been undertaken with a small number of Ian’s clients and the results have been very positive .
The cushion works by relieving the pressure placed on the sciatic nerve whist sitting and this reduces the level of aggravation to the nerve and allows it to settle down.
At this point the writer must declare an interest in that my wife has recently been suffering acute sciatic pain and has found the cushion to be a great help during this period!
The company now wishes to expand the clinical trial of the cushion and is looking specifically for sciatica sufferers to try it out.
If you have a sciatic back problem and would like to trial the cushion please contact Ian Garside on 0750 811 5080.

Sunday 13th May 1956 saw the Mallory Park gates open for the first time, welcoming over 20,000 eager spectators to witness the former pony trotting track come to life with motorcycle action. From that day on 6 decades ago, fans continue to return time and again to race and spectate at The Friendly Circuit.
Celebrations will be held over the course of the year with the main anniversary event being held at the Mallory Bike Bonanza, a classic motorcycle festival, on 30th - 31st July. In recognition of the 60th anniversary celebrations, motorcycle racings governing body the ACU have granted special dispensation for all parades throughout the weekend to use the original circuit configuration, without chicanes. Stars from the motorcycle world will be in attendance, including 11 times Isle of Man TT winner Michael Dunlop. Live music and a licenced bar will be available on both Friday and Saturday night.
The circuit has faced a number of trials a tribulations over the years, and faced spells of uncertainty. But since taking over 2 and a half years ago, the current management team Real Motorsport
Limited, work tirelessly to improve the circuit and its facilities; Mallory Park’s future is looking promising.
Natalie Hansard, Manager at Real Motorsport Limited, “Being able to celebrate the 60th birthday of Mallory Park is a great achievement. Just under 3 years ago, the future of Mallory Park looked uncertain, but we signed a 15 year lease and the circuit has gone from strength to strength, with a full calendar of events for the 2016 season. We are especially looking forward to hosting our 60th anniversary event, the Mallory Bike Bonanza.
As part of our commitment to improving the circuit, we are currently undertaking work to assist in reducing the noise output into the village. We have further improvement work planned, which will hopefully allow fans to enjoy Mallory Park for another 60 years!”
For more information on Mallory Parks 60th anniversary celebrations and upcoming events held at the circuit, visit www.malloryparkcircuit.com or call the Mallory Park hot-line on 01455 502214.

Another local lady that completed the marathon for SENSE is Dr Houghton from Ibstock House Surgery.Having already completed the London marathon 9 years earlier, Dr Houghton said she found it more of a challenge this time, juggling the training with her busy job and young family. Training sessions would take place late into the evenings and during weekends together with her sister-in-law, who was also competing. However, she still managed to complete the race in a quicker time than the first time around – a fantastic 4 hrs 58 mins! This is something Dr Houghton attributes to both the perfect weather condition on the day, much cooler than 9 years ago, and the support of her husband, 2 children and other family and friends who all travelled down to London to cheer her along.
The crowd along the route were also a key part to her success. Everyone, from all walks of life, turned out on the day and played a part in spurring all of the runners on.
Thankfully, 48 hours after completing the marathon, Dr Houghton said that she felt “back to normal” with no major injuries or ailments to report, mainly due to intensive warm up exercises prescribed by a fellow GP! However, she can’t see herself running such a long race again until both children are at school, but may consider the Leicester Half Marathon in the near future.
The £1500 that she hoped to raise for SENSE has been smashed and the total now stands in excess of £2000. Various fund raising activities including bake sales and a Christmas raffle have all added to the pot and Dr Houghton is extremely grateful for all of the support she has received from the public and at the surgery. She said, “Everyone has been so supportive. I really want to thank people for their support. I am lucky to be a GP in Ibstock amongst lovely colleagues and patients”
you may recall, back in our March issue we featured a local girl Lindsay Tilbury who was entered in the London Marathon back in April and at the time Lindsay was concerned that the distance may prove too much for her.
Well she need not have worried because she completed the whole distance in a fantastic time of 4 hours and 16 minutes. Despite the early onset of pain in the hip, the crowd carried her on and she was so pleased with her performance she intends to compete again next year.
Lindsay eventually raised over £2250.00 for Sense, the charity for deaf/blind children so I think that everyone will agree that it was a wonderful effort. Well done Lindsay!
In our last edition we featured a young fellow called Wilf Smith (aged 83) as our “Charity Champion. Wilf, along
with his family, had raised thousands of pounds over the years for a variety of good causes.
Well we thought you might like to see a picture of Wilf in earlier days when he was a keen referee for local football matches. Here is a picture of Wilf (he is the handsome young chap in
the middle of the front row) along with members of the Swannington Football club circa 1950.
By the earnest look on the faces of some of these chaps, they could have given Jamie Vardy a run for his money. Apart from
Wilf, can anyone put a name to any of the other faces in the photo? Send your answers to Graham Tyers at the

Summer FairWeds 4th May - Littleton 2-1 Heather St Johns FCHeather St Johns just had one match during May, which was the rearranged fixture away to Littleton, the Evesham-based team. The final score was 2-1 with the winning goal coming in the most bizarre way. Saints, who had to play an out-field player in goal, namely skipper Harry Reece, possibly the smallest player on the pitch. However, what he lacked in size he made up for it in superb positional play making several fine saves.
The hosts lead after 52 minutes courtesy of a Lewis Marston goal, with Saint’s restoring parity just after the hour via a Ryan Nesbitt penalty. Saints then had a claim for a second penalty waved away by the man in black after Rose was bundled down from the rear - a challenge that left the player requiring treatment. But with the clock ticking down the referee did award the game’s second penalty, and it was one that amazed both sets of supporters and players alike! The ball was shielded over goal line by stand-in keeper Reece but the referee took the view that Marston had been impeded. Conway made no mistake from the spot making it an unlikely win of 2-1 to Littleton. This was virtually the last action, giving managers Rigby’s Saints no opportunity to hit back and try to gain the point they fully deserved.
NEXT SEASON...Training starts mid-way through June and pre-season friendlies start in July. However, during May and June lots of work goes into the pitch and behind the scenes at the club. The dressing rooms and the club house get a new lick of paint, there’s a new shower for the match officials room, new seats in the main stand, the pitch is treated and re-turfed down the sides and the press box is redecorated. A busy close-season!
Anyone interested in joining the club on the pitch, or in any other capacity, should in the first instance contact myself, Phil Owen via email at [email protected] or by telephone on 01530 273399.
