WHERE’S IBBIE?Ibbie ‘spotters’ were busy again last month! He was spotted by many, hiding behind the advert for Happy Heads Hypnotherapy on page 22. The first correct answer drawn out of the ‘Community Voice hat’ was sent in by Jennifer Surrey, who will receive a

£10 GIFT VOUCHER!But where is he lurking this month? If you spot him, send us your details, and which advert he is hiding behind, using the contact details listed below.

WELCOME... to the latest edition of Community Voice!Front Cover Quiz: Spot The Local Landmark...How many of you can spot the landmark from our surrounding area featured on this month’s issue front cover? If you think you know the answer please send your entry to The Community Voice, c/o 57 High Street, Ibstock, or email us at: [email protected]

The winner (drawn first out of the hat of all correct entries) will receive a £10 One4All voucher. Good Luck!

Many of you entered our mystery local landmark competition, but some mistook the location as Packington. The early 18th century lock-up pictured is in the village of Smisby. Used to lock up drunks and minor lawbreakers, it was also used to house paupers and vagrants on a temporary basis. The first correct entry drawn from the Community Voice hat was Stuart Baines.

Let’s see how well you do with our next landmark!

STRUGGLING FOR STORAGE SPACE IN YOUR HOME?

Cloud Storage for beginnersThe lockdown has forced many of us to work from home; this can be difficult for a multitude of reasons and today I’d like to explain the basis of how using the Cloud can offer storage solutions on your own computers or mobile devices.

The best solution to this issue is Cloud storage, but what is Cloud storage?

Cloud storage allows anyone to rent storage space in highspeed servers provided by reputable companies in the tech space such as Microsoft and Google; A user can then upload documents, photos, and videos to their chosen service using WIFI or a mobile data connection freeing up space on the user’s computer. Files then can be downloaded from the cloud at will! Cloud services have more benefits than just storage.

These services can also be an excellent tool for collaboration. Many of these services allow for multiple users to access the same storage space; this can be a very efficient way of sharing files between family, friends or co-workers.

Cloud storage solutions allow for a document or project to be worked on with a diverse amount of devices which allows for great flexibility for users. Start a Project on your tablet in your lunchbreak and with the power of the Cloud, it’s instantly accessible on your computer’s desktop when you get back to your desk.

So which service is right for you? While I’m not going to comment on pricing due to constant fluctuation here are some benefits of various services:

Google Drive is very mature in this market, offering 15gb of free space to users & has a wonderful Photo backup service included for free. Allowing a user to backup and organise all your digital photos. I highly recommend Google Drive and Photos, I use it personally.

Dropbox allows 10gb of free storage and is implemented into a lot of businesses workflows currently.

Apple iCloud is great for people already using a lot of Apple products. The service automatically backs up documents, photos, videos, media bought on iTunes along with data backups of your Apple computers. Although Apple iCloud isn’t usable on non-Apple devices.

Office 365 is Microsoft’s software subscription to their incredibly popular Word, Excel and Powerpoint applications. This service costs £9.40 per month but comes included with one terabyte (one thousand gigabytes), of free cloud storage with your subscription. Perfect for those who use Microsoft products.

I hope this helps explain the benefits of Cloud storage.

Restoration Piece! MGA Roadster manufactured from 1955 -1962also in coupe form as well.

Early ones had a 1500cc engine with drum brakes, later increasedto 1600cc with front disk brakes. Also a twin cam version was made.

Two thirds where exported mainly to America. Mine is a 19561500cc imported back from America in 2012 and underwent a fullnut and bolt restoration by myself taking 3½ years includingconverting to right-hand drive. Well worth it on hot sunny days withthe top down.

If you look closely at the car you will see there are no external door handles or door locks. Gone are the days when you didn’t need to havecar security. P.S. Food for thought, when this car was made there were NO motorways in the UK.

Andy Grice (Ashby)

The church at Heather was established in the 12th Century, as a chapel for the Knights Hospitallers, although the earliest roots can be traced back to the Doomsday Book. The rectors in the 1200’s were thought to be Priors of the Preceptory of the Knights Hospitallers of St John of Jerusalem and their coat of arms can be found in the church.

Just one of the many interesting features of the church is the church clock. The timepiece, which is fixed to the eastern side of the tower, was presented to the church by Messrs J. and H. Dronfield in memory of their parents Matthew Henry and Mary Ann Dronfield; so fulfilling their long desired wish. Along with the clock, there was a memorial plaque to be hung inside the church. An article in Heather Parish magazine, dated October 1951, outlines the service of dedication for the clock and the plaque the church, was filled to capacity, showing the honour and esteem the Dronfield family had in the village.

The machinery that works the clock was installed in the first chamber of the tower. The hammer strikes the tenor bell and aims to give maximum audibility and strikes the hour. The clock must be wound once a week. The detail perhaps, cannot be seen from ground level. The dial is skeleton of cast iron open framework with Roman numerals. The finish is of hard black enamel and 23 gold carat leaf. It was designed like this to give a high degree of visibility, without obscuring the architectural features of the tower. This can be clearly seen in this photograph taken by ‘Coopersdimension’.

The Dronfield family workshop could be found opposite the church and they were described as carpenters, carriage builders, wheelwrights and coffin makers, so they would have been very busy. It is said that in the 1840’s, they repaired the axle on dowager Queen Adelaide’s coach, when it broke whilst she was in Heather, on her way to Gopsall Hall; a place she visited quite often.

The photograph advertises the builder’s name and is thought to have attached to one of the vehicles or carriages. It was given to us by someone who worked at the yard; other generations of his family also worked for Dronfields. Does anyone know what it is called? A ‘boss’? The dictionary definition says an ornamental projection, usually associated with hiding the joint in roof beams in cathedrals and stately buildings. If anyone knows what it is called, please let us know!

The historic clock of St John the Baptist Church, Heather

Part of a village bobby’s job was to supervise the local pubs. One of the pubs on my beat was kept by one of the sweetest old ladies it was ever my pleasure to meet. She had been the tenant for many years accompanied by her grown up son who lived with her. Whenever I visited I was invited into the living kitchen, where I was treated to a pint of beer together with a plate of bread and cheese with pickled onions. After I had been at the village for about four years the lady told me that they had decided to retire and would I be kind enough to join them on their final night, when all the drinks would be free and all the regular customers would be invited. Although I was on duty I made sure that I was there. The closing time was 10.00pm in those days, so when it came round to that time the lady was anxious to close, but as it was such a special occasion, half hour extensions were allowed until midnight, when everyone decided that enough was enough. This was strictly against all known licensing laws and certainly something which could never happen today.

All villages have their special characters and in one of the villages on my beat there were three brothers who lived together. Every Saturday morning the middle one of the three cycled three miles to another village where he bought three lots of fish and chips for dinner. However, half way back there was local hostelry where he would stop for liquid refreshment. After several pints he would make his way back home very unsteadily

where, without the aid of modern appliances like microwave ovens and they couldn’t wait for the food to be heated in the electric oven, they enjoyed a cold dinner of greasy fish and chips. This happened every Saturday without fail!

One of my favourite characters was a coal miner who lived near to the police house. He worked a regular night shift at a local colliery and every evening he would set off for work on his bicycle. His first stop would always be the village pub where he would sample several pints of best bitter before continuing to the pit where he completed a full shift underground. The weekends were a time for more serious drinking for him and at about 11.45 am every Sunday he would walk by my house on his way to the pub. At about 2.30 pm he would unsteadily make his way back home. His wife always served the family dinner at 1.00 pm, which included the husband’s. When he returned home his dinner was still on the table and by now, completely cold. About 10 minutes later one of his children would call and ask me to go to the house as dad was causing trouble. I always found it easy to calm him down and steer him on to his bed. On each visit the wife asked me who she should see about getting a legal separation and she was always going to see about this on Monday morning. Of course, I knew full well that this would never happen. In spite of everything, there was not a more devoted couple in the village.

Have you been on the Covid Rollercoaster? Many people have found this pandemic to be a mix of emotions. There have been highs, when some have found time to slow down, rest or spend quality time at home. Then there have been the lows, with some people feeling isolated, anxious and fearful.

This period has changed how we maintain relationships with family and friends. Traditionally conversations with loved ones may have included updates about where they had been and what they had been doing; but with restrictions in place it is not engaging to update your family about housework, DIY or the neighbour’s activities!

Instead encourage conversations that open and explore who you are. How you are feeling? What changes you may keep after lockdown? Challenge each other to be creative or to try something new. You could agree to complete a quiz or a game together over a video call. This playful, inquisitive approach could lead to a whole new depth of conversation, understanding and feelings of connectedness.

If you are feeling isolated, please contact local organisations such as the Leicestershire Local Area Coordinators who can refer you to your nearest support network (details online or via the Council).

If you notice that your mental health has changed or you are struggling with your mood; experiencing increased anxiety or any other changes in how you feel, please contact your GP or reach out to Kate at Black Dog Therapy, Market Bosworth.

HELPING TO KEEP PEOPLE CONNECTEDTwo charities covering North West Leicestershire have joined forces to reduce isolation and get people online. Hospice Hope and Enrych who both cover North West Leicestershire, have combined their skills and funding to offer a unique pilot scheme in the area.

A number of service users have been identified as potentially benefiting from receiving help to get online, and so the charities are offering a tablet loan scheme to connect people with their support networks. The pilot, which will run for three months initially, is hoped to be rolled out further for more service users from both charities, enabling them to utilise new services such as online Support Cafés and groups, as well as healthcare and other vital services.

Liz Waters, Community Engagement Worker at Hospice Hope said “this is an exciting opportunity for both our charities to reach out to vulnerable groups in these challenging times and to work together more closely”

The scheme is funded through Ashby Hastings Rotary, The Community Fund and other foundations. It is open to existing service users at Enrych and Hospice Hope, as well as anyone in North West Leicestershire living with a disability or condition leading to a reduction in quality or length of life.

For more information on the scheme or to register an interest in receiving a loan tablet please email [email protected] or call 07591 952027.

LOOKING FORWARD TO ROLLING OUT THE RED CARPET AT THE PALACEThe number of calls for assistance has steadily been decreasing over the past couple of weeks. Calls received have mainly been from people ringing to see when we are opening and looking to hire the hall; all hopeful signs for the future. Lockdown time has been spent, in splendid isolation, re-staining the floor, painting walls, weeding paths and doorways and putting together action plans, based on the current guidance for reopening. Once we do get ‘the nod’ to open the doors, we want to be fully prepared to welcome you back to The Palace!

Harley Davidson Roadking“Oh So Regal”

Thank youWe would like to thank all our patients for bearing with us during this exceptional time.

It has been a time of rapid change for us all. Our primary goal has been to keep patients and staff as safe as possible. We have stopped all routine face to face appointments so that we only ask patients to come down if it is absolutely necessary. We have asked patients to wait in their cars or on the bench outside rather than waiting in the surgery. These measures have meant we have had very few patients in the building at once, to ensure we have been able to maintain social distancing measures where possible.

At Ibstock & Barlestone surgeries we have used telephone consultation for many years but recently we have extended this to every consultation that we can. We have started doing video consultations and clinicians are asking patients to send in photos where appropriate. These systems have been working well and we anticipate them continuing into the future.

We are now working on ways to return safely to routine consultations and will keep you updated on this work over the coming weeks and months. Once again thank you for your consideration and support during this challenging time.

NHS AppFor patients who have Smartphones or tablets, the NHS App is proving really useful. It can be used to book and cancel appointments, so no waiting to get through on the phone. You can order repeat medication, send us secure messages and see your own medical record with it. In order to get started and use it, you download the app and verify your identity through a government portal at a time to suit you. There’s no need to come down to the surgery with your ID. For more information see our website under “Appointments, NHS App” or go to the App Store or Google Play and download it. Traditional Values, Modern Healthcare

C H A R I T Y C H A M P I O N SASHBY DE LA ZOUCH & COALVILLE LIONS CLUBRegistered Charity number 515773

Ashby and Coalville Lions is a service-centred club, where its’ members use their talents to improve our local community. Because we are local, we know and serve the unique needs of our local community; as part of Lions Clubs International, we can also address international community challenges wherever they occur. The Covid 19 crisis has meant that our annual Easter Egg Raffle (launched in over 50 pubs in our area just before lockdown) will not raise the sums normally achieved, but we are very grateful to the pubs who have managed to pass on the monies they have raised under very difficult conditions.

However, this has not prevented us from continuing to support charitable causes during lockdown, including, Jaxon’s Chance (go to JustGiving and see how you could help a young boy from Coalville get life changing treatment), St John Ambulance (towards Covid 19 training for their members), and Cancer Research UK (as their income stream has fallen dramatically).

Earlier this year, we committed to providing a public use defibrillator in Ibstock (our second in the area), at a cost of about £1500. The good news is that it has arrived. The not-so-good news is that we cannot install it at the Ibstock Palace until restrictions on access are eased (we also need the services of an electrician to do it – please get in touch if you can help).

If you would like to learn more about our Club, or enquire about possible support for a local need, then email [email protected] or visit us on Facebook. We would love to hear from you. We may be locked-down, but we are still here to help.

That was the challenge set in a competition, which was run by the well known East Midlands charity, ‘me&dee’, in conjunction with James Austin, co-owner of Fairly Influential. The founder of the charity is Maria Hanson MBE. This wonderful charity raises funds to make holidays happen for the families of those who are very poorly; gifting families with special memories, when they are needed most.Maria asked children (small and big), to draw their very own monster, which will then be turned into a book written by local author, Mandy

Once a winner has been selected, they will be receive a signed copy of the book, which will be out at the end of July.

The designer of the winning monster featured on the cover of the book also won a T-shirt, courtesy of Fairly Influential, with the winning design featured on it. (See photo).

The winning entry will be the main star of Mandy’s story, with as many of the other 50+ entries also making an appearance as possible. All profits from the sale of the book will be donated to ‘me&dee’.

Mandy, who lives locally, started writing and self-publishing books 10 years ago. She started her new business as a ‘Book Coach’, helping others to write their story or book, this year. If you would like to know more about how to write your own book, contact Mandy at:

Here’s another installment in the exciting new series of stories by local author and illustrator, Rachel Greaves. Keeping in the Ruffle theme, the new tales follow a toy Ruffle and the adventures he has each month. Read on to find out more…

As before, each month there will be a word within the text. Just find the underlined, italic letters in capitals then re-arrange them to create this month’s word.

For more information about Ruffle’s storybooks visit www.ruffletheraildog.co.uk

Now available on YouTube – Ruffle’s walks: a series of short video stories

®

Try the Ruffle “Find the word” competition - this month’s word has 9 letters. The answer is on the inside back cover.

For further information about Ruffle’s story books and other adventures visit www.ruffletheraildog.co.uk or watch the new series of short films on YouTube under ‘Ruffle’s Walks’.

After the large bird had dropped Ruffle, the parachute made by the girl had gently guided him to a landing next to a boating lake in the park. Ruffle had spent another night in the open with the sounds from the lake echoing in the stillness. It was quite comforting for Ruffle to be near the geese and ducks who had made the park their home, even If they were very curious about the new black and tan fur arrival!

The weather was lovely and warm which had brought out families looking forward to the promise of summer days to come. In the early afternoon two children walked Eagerly along the path towards the lake. The older boy carried a large model boat in his arms, the younger girl a remote-control unit.

‘Wait at the edge please!’ called their mother, a little way behind.

Once together they began readying the boat for its voyage when the girl suddenly caught sight of the white handkerchief. She went over to investigate and gave a cry of delight as Ruffle was uncovered. She brushed him down with her hand then took Ruffle, still Attached to the handkerchief, over to her brother and mother.

‘Look what I’ve found!’ she cried. Her brother looked at Ruffle.

‘Let’s take the hankie off the dog then tie him to our boat! He could go for a Ride around the lake!’

Their mother helped to untie the white parachute that had done its job so well, then the pieces of String were used to carefully tie Ruffle to the front, or the bow, of the model boat.

‘There!’ she said once she had secured him. ‘He’ll have a fine view!’

The boy took the boat over to the edge of the lake and gently lowered it into the water where it bobbed about expectantly. The girl pulled out the

aerial from the remote control unit then skilfully moved the boat away from the edge Towards the middle of the lake with Ruffle proudly guiding the way. The boat easily rode the little waves made by a gentle breeze that blew across the lake.

The children took turns to guide the boat but as the boy manoeuvred the vessel around the little island in the middle of the lake the boat suddenly came to a stop. The batteries had been Exhausted leaving the boat stranded. Luckily the lake was quite shallow so the children’s mother reluctantly took off her shoes and socks, rolled up her Trouser legs and waded carefully across to retrieve the boat. With batteries dead the boat would no longer sail so the family decided to return home. They untied Ruffle and decided to leave him on the Bench next to the lake in case the person who had dropped and lost Ruffle returned.

Ruffle sat quietly on the green park bench as the children and their mother carried the boat along the path and disappeared…

Give burglars nowhere to hideWe have noticed an increase in reported Burglary. Below are some tips to helpBurglars don’t want to be seen or heard and if they think they’ll be noticed by a neighbour or passer-by, they’ll probably move on. Here’s some advice on helping keep burglars out by giving them no hiding place.

KEEP IT VISIBLEYou’d think that it would be best to make a property less visible from the street, and to keep it hidden from prying eyes behind overgrown bushes, trees, high fences or walls. In reality, all that this serves to do is make it easier for a burglar to get close to a home unnoticed, and provide somewhere to hide while carrying out a burglary or theft from the property.Lower fences at the front around one-metre high are preferable to high fences as they allow for a clear view over the top and don’t provide cover for anyone wishing to hide.At the rear and sides, taller fencing is recommended to prevent easy access.Trellis, thorny plants, or a suitable anti-climb topping such as plastic spikes make it difficult for anyone climbing over a fence or gate.Planting prickly or barbed shrubbery along boundaries and

fence lines acts as an effective natural barrier.Gravel driveways and paths will make sure you hear anyone approach.

CCTVBy using well-defined boundaries as a basis, CCTV can be a valuable tool. However, it doesn’t prevent a crime from being committed and does have limitations. Most importantly, CCTV is no substitute for good quality physical security such as secure doors and windows. A wide range of cameras is available, from traditional CCTV systems recording 24/7 to video doorbells that activate on approach. Some cameras work by day and by night, and record when they detect movement. Some can be remotely viewed from a smartphone.Audio capability is available in some, to allow you to speak to any caller - welcome or unwelcome.Position cameras where they are best able to obtain good quality facial images. Could you recognise or identify someone from the footage? There is legislation for home CCTV use, so always seek advice from an accredited installer first to ensure your system complies with the law. Place signage up warning that CCTV is in use.

For advice and approved suppliers of CCTV visit the National Security Inspectorate and the Security Systems and Alarms Inspection Board websites.

LIGHTINGExternal lightingLighting is a good deterrent and is recommended at doors as it makes it safer for you when coming and going after dark. A clear, low white light that activates at dusk to dawn is ideal for lighting a yard and garden and allowing any person to be clearly seen.Check to make sure that trees and plants do not obscure your lighting. It’s recommended that you regularly cut vegetation back. Take care to position these lights so that light pollution doesn’t annoy your neighbours. Internal lighting Use an automatic plug-in time-switch to operate a lamp or light at pre-set times when you’re away. Energy saving LED bulbs are best as they do not use as much electricity, last longer than conventional bulbs and do not generate heat, reducing fire risk. In blocks of flats, automatic low-energy lights that detect movement are recommended for corridors, stairwells and communal areas such as car parks and cycle stores.

After weeks of uncertainty, Ibstock’s Old School Tea Room is back! Offering a mouth-watering menu of takeaway treats.

There is also a limited amount of outdoor seating available for those who wish to, hopefully, sit in the sun! Sheryl and her lovely ladies have worked hard during the lockdown to ensure that they can serve up all of your favourites, within the government guidelines; making sure that your visit is as safe and as brief as possible. There will be a wide range of hot food, including breakfast trays, burgers, jacket potatoes, plus generously filled cobs and torps.

Daily specials are also on offer, so expect the same tasty meals that have always previously been available from The Old School Tea Rooms.

As they have proved highly successful during lockdown, Sheryl and her team are still creating the very popular, beautiful picnic boxes filled with delicious Afternoon Teas and Ploughman’s Lunches that would satisfy any hungry Ploughman.

Sheryl and her staff have really missed their ‘regulars’ and are delighted to welcome back customers, old and new!! So, why not treat yourself and help to support a local business at the same time.

5 TRIED AND TESTED TIPS FOR ANXIETYBy Hollie Jordan, Clinical Hypnotherapist and Psychotherapist

In this article I will share with you some of the top tried and tested tips and techniques that may help you deal with anxiety and related symptoms.

Firstly…what is anxiety?

Anxiety is a feeling of unease, such as worry or fear. Mild anxiety may be felt by most people when they are about to take an exam but this is perfectly normal. However, sometimes it can be hard to control our worries and feelings resulting in symptoms of anxiety being more constant. Symptoms may include feeling worried or restless; struggling to concentrate; insomnia; heart palpitations and panic attacks.

TIPS

1. 7/11 BREATHING

This technique is one of the best I have come across and yes, it is as easy as it sounds! To practice this breathe in for a count of 7…then out for a count of 11. If you cannot manage to lengthen your breaths to a count of 11 or 7 then reduce the numbers. The trick is to make sure your out breath is longer than the in breath. This technique works by stimulating your parasympathetic nervous system, which is the opposite of the fight or flight response. Instead of getting you ready for action, this technique activates a natural bodily response that some describe as ‘rest and digest’.

This technique decreases blood pressure and slows your heart rate which in turn lowers emotional arousal. Practicing a few times a day will lower your overall stress levels in the long term.

2. GROUNDING

Grounding is an effective way to calm anxiety during a panic attack. It involves identifying objects around you resulting in a feeling of comfort and control. One of the most common grounding techniques is the 54321 method. During a panic attack you identify:

5 things you can see

4 things you can feel

3 things you can hear

2 things you can smell

And... 1 thing you can taste.

As your mind focuses on these things, it will be less focused on the sudden rush of anxiety.

3. POSITIVE AFFIRMATIONS

These are phrases or statements used to challenge unhelpful or negative thoughts. Practicing this is so simple yet effective, all you have to do is pick a phrase or a statement and repeat it to yourself. An example of a positive affirmation is: “I am happy”.

It can feel a little silly at first but you do get used

to it! One of my favourites amidst the chaos of a single parent lockdown with two young children to occupy and educate was... ‘I am a happy and patient mummy’

You can say them out loud, in your head or write them on a post it note and stick them all over your house you like!

If you find yourself engaging in a lot of negative self talk... positive affirmations will help you to challenge this.

4. ANCHORS

These are objects that can be used to trigger good memories or to serve as a reminder to stay focused and positive. It is important to use something you are likely to feel many times throughout your day - so placing it in your coat pocket or a handbag would be ideal. It is useful to associate a positive affirmation with your anchor so when you come across it you would automatically be reminded to say ’stay calm’ or ‘you’ve got this’, for example.

5. HYPNOTHERAPY VIDEOS

Listening to hypnosis videos helps to relieve stress, fear and anxiety. To be effective it is important to listen to them more than once. Check out and subscribe to the Happy Head Hypnotherapy YouTube channel where there are plenty of videos to watch and listen to.

Traditional reupholstery andrepair workshop is back in town!David Hopgood, Master Upholsterer and traditional restorer, has returned to Leicestershire, after having a 15 year stint working within a corporate environment.

Previously, running Hopgood’s Reupholstery and Restoration, from 1986 until 2006 when he moth-balled the business for a future date. To cut a long story short, David returned late last year to find that there was still was a great demand for his magic and expertise in tastefully restoring his clients treasured, traditional pieces with his trademark quality craftsmanship.

David says; “I was very lucky to have had such a good grounding, having traditionally served a full 5 year indentured apprenticeship and college education in one of the last traditional upholstery workshops. I always use excellent materials, being sympathetic to the original function of each individual piece, with an eye for proportion.”

Please follow this link https://youtu.be/bAQyImtKbkQ to a YouTube film to see David restoring a traditional piece of furniture back to its former glory.

On the morning of the 3rd of October 1943 tragedy came to the hamlet of Lount near, Coleorton. Villagers were horrified to see two spitfire planes collide in mid-air over the village and burst into flames. In a desperate attempt to escape his doomed aircraft one pilot attempted to parachute free, but the parachute caught fire and he hurtled to his death on the ground below. The pilot of the other aircraft crash-landed his plane near to Coleorton Pottery where it was cut through by a tall tree, trapping the pilot in his cockpit. Local villagers William Spare and his wife and Frank Griffin ran to the aid of the airman at the blazing crash site, ignoring the danger from exploding ammunition. Fortunately, the wind was blowing the flames away from the cockpit and the villagers were able to lift the pilot from his cockpit and carry him to a nearby field where they laid the injured man on a blanket. The emergency services were called and the injured pilot was taken to Ashby hospital by ambulance while the flames were extinguished by the fire brigade.

The constabulary report of the incident tells

us that the surviving airman was Flight Sgt. Robert Cantille Jenson Meyhuys (service number 1424826) operating from Montford Bridge Aerodrome, near Shrewsbury, with RAF 350 Squadron. Interestingly, the police later reported that several machine guns with which the planes were equipped had gone missing, despite a search being made of the area around the crash site, and appealed for the finders to take their ‘souvenirs’ to a police station!

Flight Sgt. Mehuys was a Belgian national, born at Waregem on 7th October 1948, who had escaped occupied Europe to join the British air force. Prior to the war he had been an air gunner with the Belgian Aéronautique Militaire. He had escaped from Belgium in March 1941, but was arrested in Spain, before being released and arriving in Britain on 8th of November 1941 where he enlisted in the Belgian Section of the RAF. After his accident Mehuys spent time in several hospitals before resuming his service in the RAF. He went on to marry Rosemary Joan Garrett of the Princes Mary’s RAF nursing service at Kilsmerdom, Somerset in November 1944. At the end of the

war he was awarded the Croix des Evadé (The Escapees Cross) by the Belgian Government. This medal was awarded to patriotic Belgians who had escaped the occupied territories and proved their patriotism by serving abroad in the Allied armed services or in the resistance against the enemy. He died on the 1st January 1978 at Auderghem, Belgium.
