Candor Care become first UK distributor of Devi stairlifts Leicestershire based stairlift company CandorCare have announced their recent partnershipwith Devi Stairlifts, a leading manufacturerbased in the Netherlands. Candor will becomethe first distributor and installer of the ‘UP’stairlift in the UK.

The Devi UP was created by the company’s owner, DennisVroegindeweij. Dennis has extensive industry experience andproduct knowledge, and was recognised for his previous successin designing the Van Gogh stairlift during his time at Freelift B.V.

Following the development of modular curved rail systems overthe last 20 years, Devi have focused on designing patentedtechnology requiring only a handful of components that aresimply bolted together to form the desired rail layout. The railparts are manufactured from castings and aluminium extrusionssimilar to straight stairlift tracks. The parts can be easily stocked, which means lead times can compete with those offered withsimpler straight stairlifts.

Candor Care are confident that for customers who are lookingfor an immediate solution, it will be possible to provide a nextday installation service of the Devi UP. Further benefits of the

“UP" stairlift include the rail system being manufactured from aluminium as opposed to steel, meaning that itis made from a light and sustainable material, along with the patented curved sections having the ability to beeasily connected and form every conceivable curvature. Alan Ferguson, Managing Director at Candor Caresaid – “I was delighted to travel to meet Dennis and formalise our new partnership. We are thrilled to have theprivilege of bringing the Devi UP stairlift to the UK and we can’t wait to start introducing it to customers along withinstalling a working Devi UP in our stairlift assessment centre”.

Easter in Iceland for Ashby School students A group of students from Ashby School spent five days in Iceland overthe Easter holiday.

The 29 students experienced glacier walking, spectacular geysers and waterfalls as part of theiradventure, which was organised by the school’s geography department. Other highlights includedthe blue lagoon by night, along with visits to lava fields and black sand beaches.

Carolyn Pearce, Head of Geography at Ashby School, said: “Trips like this not only reinforce students’classroom learning but are also an invaluable opportunity for students to gain new experiences and facechallenges which contribute significantly to their personal development.”

Awards Evening is Out of this WorldA former student-turned-space scientist returned to Ashby School asguest speaker at the school’s annual awards evening. Robert Garner, nowa Mission Safety Analyst at the UK Space Agency, presented awards to60 of Ashby’s most deserving students. Ten years ago, Robert was amongthe award winners.

This year, prizes went to students for academic excellence, outstanding progress, communityinvolvement and unswerving commitment to school life. The prestigious Clive Jones Shield waspresented to Beth Bakewell-Smith, for an outstanding all-round contribution to the life of the schoolover four years. Beth has been offered a place to read Biochemistry at Oxford University.

Entertainment came from A level music student Hannah Matthews, who was the winner of theRotary Young Musician competition earlier this year. Hannah, who played a trumpet concerto, willstudy music at Birmingham Conservatoire from September.

The evening concluded with a vocal performance of Lady Gaga’s ‘Paparazzi’ by Keelan Bourne, winner of the GCSE Drama Simon Ryder Award. In May 2010, Leicester City Legend Matt Elliott andlong-time friend and local football man Richard Hillwere 'between occupations' and set-up a summerholiday football camp for children at Newbold VerdonPrimary School under their then newly formed MattElliott Football Development Scheme. Why not visit theirstunning new shop and showroom at Innovation House, 232 Leicester Road, Field Head, Markfield, LE67 9RG where theyalso stock a huge array of sporting memorabilia that can be viewed and purchased but can also be supplied for charityevents, event stalls and auctions.

The football sector is the Matt Elliott Football Development Scheme, where Matt himself oversees the academies, development centres, soccer schools and casual clubs with the children benefiting from his vast experience as an ex-professional and international footballer. All the coaches and instructors in all sectors are insured, CRB/DBS checked, firstaid trained along with safe guarding children...as well as a an extensive and wide range of sporting qualifications. Matt ElliottSoccer International is the football tours sector where they organise and host tours for schools, football clubs and groupsfrom the UK and all over the globe. The tour packages are all inclusive and cater for all needs but can also be developedbespoke to suit particular groups. ANYONE FOR CROQUET?Ashby Croquet Club welcomes players of all ages and abilities. Our active members range from mid-twenties to eighties interms of age. We have 5 of the top 20 ranked UK players in theclub, but we also have many members who like to just comealong to club sessions and play friendly games against whoeverturns up. The club is happy to cater for what people want to doin this respect.

The club enters teams into competitions at both national and local level. The local areafor us is the East Midlands – Ashby is right at the western edge of it, so we sometimesneed to venture almost to the east coast for some of these fixtures. This year we haveentered 3 teams into the East Midlands leagues. The A team got off to a good start winning their first match against Sheffield, whilst the C team drewtheir match with Bakewell B. The B team are yet to play. Each of these teams will play 6 matches in a year against other teams in their division.

At a national level, Ashby teams have got through the first round of different knockoutcompetitions against teams from Culcheth near Warrington, and Church Stretton inShropshire. In one case our next opponents are Nottingham, but in the other we will faceeither Middlesborough or Sussex County (Brighton), both over 150 miles away. So we willbe hoping for a home draw for that round!

All of these matches are played in a friendly spirit, with the host club providing catering forthe visitors; Ashby takes pride in the quality of it’s food. Come and try Croquet on Tuesday5th June from 4pm to 7pm – a chance for prospective players to try croquet. Club playerswill be on hand to guide visitors through the basics, including some friendly games. Comealong to all or part of the session.

This session is free of charge and takes place on our Ashby Croquet Club lawns at Moira Miners Welfare sportsground, Bath Lane, Moira DE12 6BP. All equipment is provided, but please wear comfortable flat-soled shoesor trainers. There is plenty of parking available right next to the club.

The Ghost Train All aboard for this scary drama at Coalville Adult SchoolArnold Ridley’s 1920’s thriller about a haunted railway hasn’t run out of steam!

Coalville Drama Group’s exciting production of this classic play will be staged at Coalville Adult School, Bridge Road from Wednesday 19th June until Saturday 22nd June.

The tale begins when a very silly young man accidentally strands six passengers at a small Cornish wayside station. Despite the stationmaster’s stories of a ghost train, they decide to stay the night in the waiting room. Soon they regret this decision as the suspense mounts and ghostly and not so ghostly apparitions materialise (see advert for more details).

This summer, help celebrate the rich and fascinating heritage of our two counties. Explore the archaeology ofyour local area, watch experts at work and experience the excitement of archaeology with have-a-go events.

On Saturday 29th June the Leicestershire and Rutland Festival of Archaeology – the UK’s biggest archaeology festival – begins; and with over 80events planned over four weeks, this year’s event promises to be bigger and better than before. The Festival has something for everyone, with familyfriendly activities at museums, guided walks of our counties’ historic sites, talks by experts, displays and exhibitions, and chances to get your handsdirty with a bit of excavation. Whether it’s a visit to the excavations at Bradgate Park to find out more about the childhood home of Lady Jane Grey;or a tour of the Glenfield Tunnel, one of the earliest steam railway tunnels in the world; or a chance to build your own Roman Leicester in Minecraft, there are all sorts of fantastic and unique opportunities to explore thousands of years of secrets hidden beneath your feet.

This year the festival in Leicestershire and Rutland runs for four weeks from Saturday 29th June to Sunday 28th July, and includes the Council forBritish Archaeology’s nationwide Festival of Archaeology (13th – 28th July). The Festival brings together local archaeological organisations to showcaseall that is great about our local archaeological heritage. Peter Liddle, Festival convenor, commented: “We are extremely pleased with this year’sprogramme. There is something for all the family, from children’s craft events at museums around the county to serious lectures. We are particularly proudof the guided walks programme that grows every year, giving people the chance to explore sites with a local expert who can explain its unique history.” FromMay, Festival leaflets will be widely available from your local museum, library or tourist information centre (and many other places across Leicestershireand Rutland). The programme will also be accessible to downloaded online at https://leicsfieldworkers.co.uk/festival-of-archaeology.

A GREAT BIG ‘THANK YOU’One of the Lions’ biggest fund-raising projects is our annual Easter Egg raffles in local pubs.

This year 58 pubs in the Ashby and Coalville area took part, raising a grand total of £4874, considerably more thanlast year. Every penny of this great amount will be spent on worthwhile causes to benefit those in need, so we wouldlike to thank all the landlords, landladies and bar staff for their help, but most of all the public for their generosity inmaking this venture such a success.

If you have a shop, café, bar or other suitable business and would like to help by raffling an egg next year, please get in touch to express your interest by ringing Lynda on 07735407637.

CHAR I TY CHAMP IONS

Fibromyalgia Friends TogetherTowards understanding Fibromyalgia'Fibromyalgia Friends Together' is a group of friendly and like minded people whosuffer from Fibromyalgia. Carers are also very welcome and encouraged to attendtheir meetings.

These take place every third Thursday of the month, in the beautiful setting of Ulverscroft Manor, set in a tranquil wooded area of Charnwood Forest. The group objectives are to support Fibromyalgia sufferers and their carers, to raise awareness of the condition, to campaign to get local NHSFibromyalgia services and to tackle the stigma that people with it have to face. Each meeting begins with an informal chat and light refreshments at12:00pm. This is followed by a more formal meeting with a structured agenda at 1:15pm. Occasional guest speakers are invited to talk about a widerange of subjects. Fibromyalgia is a long-term condition that can cause widespread pain and tenderness over much of the body. It is thought to bemore common than statistics report, as many people do not seek medical help or are misdiagnosed. In the past, other terms were used to describethe condition, including muscular rheumatism and fibrositis. We now know that Fibromyalgia isn’t linked to inflammatory or degenerative arthritis, even though the symptoms may sometimes be very similar.

People with Fibromyalgia experience aches and pain all over the body and fatigue. It may be caused by a problem in the brain with nerves and painsignals. The sufferer's brain misunderstands everyday pain and other sensory experiences, increasing sensitivity to pressure, temperature, bright lightsand noise. Symptoms also include stiff joints and muscles, balance problems, food Intolerances, cognitive difficulties, mood swings, anxiety, depression, digestive problems and headaches or migraines. Not every person will experience the same symptoms. Nobody knows for sure yet what causes thecondition. Current theories suggest that it may be irregular activity within the central nervous system. This is because the pain it causes does notseem to be a result of physical or mechanical problem in the body (e.g. a broken bone, a pulled muscle, inflammation) but instead, seems to be causedby the brain’s management of pain signals. This means that for many people, pain relieving drugs do not have much effect for them and the paincannot be healed. If you are concerned about any of the symptoms you read here, consult your GP. These symptoms are often symptoms of otherconditions and may not be caused by Fibromyalgia. If your GP is unable to find any other reasons that could be the cause of your symptoms, they maydecide upon a Fibromyalgia diagnosis. Receiving a diagnosis of Fibromyalgia can be difficult to take in. It can help to talk to other people in a similarsituation, or those who are living with the condition. As a group their main aim is to be there for people and to provide the opportunity to talk tosomeone in a similar position.

CHARITY CHALLENGECharity Link is looking to make it a record-breaking year forthe Leicestershire 3 Peaks Challenge!

Charity Link, an organisation supporting people in need across Leicester, Leicestershire,Rutland and Northamptonshire, is looking for individuals and groups of family, friendsand colleagues to take part in its annual Leicestershire 3 Peaks Challenge which thisyear takes place on Sunday 22nd September.

Launched in 2016, Charity Link’s Leicestershire 3 Peaks Challenge is a unique 16 mile walking or running event which begins and ends at BradgatePark in Leicestershire. The challenge takes in the peaks of Beacon Hill, the little known Bardon Hill (which is Leicestershire’s highest point and just88ft short of a mountain), and the famous ‘Old John’ Tower in Bradgate Park itself. Last year’s event saw 60 challengers take part with over £8,000raised to help provide essential items, including food, clothing and beds for local people in need. Charity Link hopes that more than 100 challengerswill take part in the 2019 event and that over £10,000 will be raised. New for this year is a competition for local businesses; 4 – 6 colleagues pitchthemselves against other teams with the aim of claiming the inaugural Leicestershire 3 Peaks Challenge ‘Corporate Team Cup’. Dogs who are up tothe challenge and their well-behaved owners are also encouraged to join the challenge, with medals presented to the humans and special goodie-bags for the four-legged finishers. Susan McEniff, Director of Charity Link, who takes part in the challenge herself each year, says: “Charity Link worksto ensure that all local people have the basic items in life that we all deserve and which many of us are lucky enough to take for granted, including adequatefood and clothing and a warm, safe place to sleep. Everyone taking part in the challenge will be doing something amazing to help ensure that more vulnerablelocal people are warm, safe and fed and the atmosphere on the day is brilliant! People chat and encourage each other along the way, whether they haveentered by themselves or are part of a big team. It would be fantastic to see more challengers take part than ever before!”.

Individual registration is £15 with challengers pledging to raise £100 via sponsorship or fundraising which, due to Charity Link’s unique way of working(for every £10 donated the charity can untap £50 from charitable trusts), will actually hep will actually help to provide £500 worth of essential itemsfor local people in need.

Full details on the event and registration forms can be found at www.charity-link.org/leics3peaks or call 0116 2222200.

Baron François LejeuneN A P O L E O N I C P O W I N A S H B YOne of the exciting, though brief, periods of Ashby’s history wasbetween 1804 and 1814, when over 200 Napoleonic officers were sentto the town on parole. They had all signed a declaration promisingnot to escape – that is, all except one.

François Lejeune had risen in the ranks during campaigns in Italy, Egypt and the Rhine, gainingkudos and the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel. In 1811, however he was captured by brigands nearToledo in Spain. Twice he was lined up to be shot, but on each occasion the powder was toodamp for a discharge. The leader of the brigands, then realizing that Lejeune was worth aransom, handed him over to the British (after being forced to run naked for several daysbetween the brigands’ horses).

Reaching England, he was put on a stagecoach so hurriedly that he never signed any parolepapers. His journey to join other French officers in Ashby was dilatory – he visited BlenheimPalace, several theatres and art galleries. In his Memoires, he recalls meeting the Ashby agentin charge of the prisoners: “a wholesale grocer by the name of Farnell, certainly the tallest, thinnest, most cadaverous seller of dry goods in the world…who seemed to move by clockwork”. The officerswere allowed to go up to a mile out of town, and Lejeune attended balls at Willesley Hall, the home of General Sir Charles Hastings. On one occasion,“Mr. Farnell was there…and never did I see anything more comic than the appearance of this provincial dancer...It was really quite worth a journey to Englandonly to watch him!” Receiving a messenger from France, who said an escape could be planned, Lejeune took into his confidence a Colonel Stoffel. After attending a dinner at Willesley, Lejeune hid in some bushes in the park. Stoffel, whose cunning plan appears to have a Baldrick element to it,waited in another copse with the French messenger. Eventually, they met up and, boarding a hired coach, sped south to the coast. A ferocious lookingsmuggler, named Brick, was hired to take them to France. Luckily, they were forewarned that Brick’s practice was to murder his passengers mid-Channel and drop their weighted (bricks?!) bodies over the sides. Another fisherman did convey them to France and Lejeune had a prestigiousaudience with the great Napoleon himself. Lejeune became a celebrated battle painter (now French national treasures) and published his Memoiresin 1846. He spoke fondly of his time in Ashby, mercilessly of poor Farnell, and thrillingly of his hazardous escape. His name is engraved on the Arc deTriomphe. Kenneth Hillier (Ashby Museum)

Ten out of TenThe Community Voice recently enjoyed a nightout at Ashby’s Venture Theatre.

The Venture Theatres' gamble to put on a new play, by local play-write, Terry Hammond, certainly paid off; ‘Ten Rods’ was a realtriumph. Playing to packed houses every night; the audienceenjoyed a black comedy, which had genuine moments of realhilarity – such as stuffing a dead drug dealer into a scarecrow! Seton an allotment, it told the hilarious tale of three old war veteransclash with their new neighbour, Shadbolt. Things start to go frombad to worse when they discovered Shadbolt was up to criminalactivity and knocking his girlfriend, Sylvia, about. They decide theworld would be a better place without the likes of Shadbolt,so the old chaps decided to ‘sort' him out.

The play flowed brilliantly, with a combination of fast action, veryfunny dialogue and some moving and touching moments. Anexcellent cast gelled very well, with very convincing performancesall round. In particular, Paul Smith, who played the no nonsense‘Alf’ (amazing to discover that he is not a real ‘Geordie’- verycredible!) and Pip Gorringe, who played the rough diamondSylvia, gave outstanding performances.

Congratulations to the Venture Theatre for discovering ‘Ten Rods’and to Terry Hammond, the writer and director.
