Every fortnight, we meet in a local hotel or pub for drinks, friendly discussion and good company. On alternate weekends we enjoy a planned event or an evening out, dependent upon the season. We operate a ‘car share’ system, as some of the events can take you to Nottingham, Derby and further afield.

Christmas 1985 and the people of Ibstock needed to go no further than St Denys Infant School. As there would already be a Nativity play, Mrs. Chambers decided that her class of six and seven year olds would perform a pantomime. ‘Cinderella’ was chosen, an ambitious project perhaps, but not for Mrs. Chambers and her class. The children wholeheartedly embraced the idea. Auditions were held and parts were distributed and every child had a role. The children worked hard to learn their words and the songs until they were ‘word perfect’. During the many rehearsals the children took part in formal dancing lessons so that they could all waltz along with Cinderella and the Prince at the Ball.

The enthusiasm spread to parents and grandparents who made costumes and scenery. There was a golden coach to take Cinderella to the ball, with children dressed as white mice that turned into white horses to pull it along. Cinderella’s sisters acted a good part and looked beautiful in their own way! Cinderella found her Prince and it all ended happily ever after.

The audience enjoyed everything that a traditional pantomime should be; a good story, great characters, singing, dancing, jokes, a comic act and audience participation in joining in with the humorous song, ‘After the ball was over’. It was a triumph with enthusiastic applause and not a dry eye in the place. The children and Mrs. Chambers were justifiably proud of themselves.

Does anyone have any photos of this event or of any other pantomime that took place in the village in the past? If so, the Historical Society would like to see them and to record them on the archive.

This was a question I was asked recently by one of my patients who was suffering with sciatic pain but only after they had been standing for any period of time, as opposed to most sufferers who get sciatic pain after being seated for a period of time. It turned out that they work at a local supermarket and spend long periods of time standing on a hard floor.

As I also, at one time during my working life, had to stand in one place working a machine for hours on end, I fully empathised with their situation.

Sciatic pain usual results from the sciatic being trapped in one of three places:-

a) the lower lumbar vertebrae.

b) the Sacroiliac joint.

c) where the nerve passes between the piriformis muscle and the gluteus muscle (referred to as ‘piriformis syndrome’).

Sitting can cause sciatic pain to occur when pressure is applied to the sciatic nerve in any of these three locations. However, for pain to occur only whilst standing, the probability is that the pain is stemming from either the lower lumbar vertebrae or the sacroiliac joint.

So what can you do to relieve the pain? Firstly, invest in some well cushioned shoes. Secondly, if your occupation involves standing in one location, i.e. behind a customer service desk or at a machine for long periods of time, approach your employer with a request for cushioned matting. Both of these actions will reduce the constant pressure on the nerve.

Thirdly, stretch as often as possible, and the simple stretch shown here can be done anywhere; if done regularly throughout the day it will relieve the pressure on the sciatic nerve.

With your feet shoulder width apart, turn the foot of your affected side slightly inwards. Reach up and across, lifting your heel off the floor. Once you are at full stretch, steadily push the heel back down to the floor to increase the stretch. This action not only opens up the lower lumbar vertebrae and the sacroiliac joint, it also stretches the sciatic nerve and releases the pressure on

the nerve. (The picture shows the stretch for somebody with sciatic pain on their right side).

With regard to shoes, apart from good comfortable trainers and walking shoes, of which there are many various makes, it can be difficult to find well cushioned, smart business shoes. I can personally recommend Hush Puppies or Clarks and my wife recommends Paver and Hotter brands. Alternatively, gel heel inserts can be of great benefit.

Wishing you anUnusual Christmas!Whilst Christmas may have begun solely as a Christian holiday and is often still celebrated as such, peoplefrom all over the world have embraced the festive season and added their own traditions along the way.

Many of our own Christmas traditions are imported from overseas, such as the Christmas tree and even Santa Claus himself. Some traditions seemunique to particular countries, however, it is impossible to trace the origin of many of them. Most have travelled around the world and been adaptedto suit the country that has elected to adopt them. Father Christmas or Santa Claus is a favourite with our children, but in Austria, children are alsowarned about a ghoulish creature known as 'Krampus'. This evil accomplice of St Nicholas is said to wander the streets in search of badly-behavedchildren. During the month of December, pranksters don terrifying masks and costumes and go out and about scaring children and adults alike! Thissounds like a rather extreme version of our fairly recent tradition of 'Elf on the shelf'; a toy employed to persuade children to be on their best behaviourto ensure that they will receive Christmas presents!

The Norwegians also seem to have associated the Christmas period with some of the 'darker' forces. According to their folklore, Christmas Eve isthe day when mischievous spirits and witches take to the skies for mischief and general shenanigans. As witches are often portrayed as using broomsfor their preferred mode of transport, it is traditional for Norwegian families to hide any cleaning equipment attached to sticks so that the witchescan't find them. A great excuse for avoiding any house work during the holiday period!

Where we have baubles and tinsel, Ukrainians trim their trees with decorations that mimic the beautiful natural formation of spiders' webs shimmeringwith dew; so not one for the arachnophobes among us! The tradition goes back to a folk tale about a poor widow who could not afford to decoratea tree for her children. Legend has it that the spiders in the house took pity on the family's plight. They cast sparkling webs all over the tree to thedelight of the children on Christmas morning. Spider's webs are generally considered to be lucky in Ukrainian culture.

Our own old customs are not without their 'darker side'; for example Mistletoe, Holly and Ivy, all Christmas favourites, can be considered unlucky.This applies especially to Holly, if it is bought into the house before Christmas Eve. So, one to avoid if you are among those who like to put up theirdecorations well in advance of the festivities! Tradition dictates that all decorations must be removed by Twelfth Night or 6th January, but any greenerymust be disposed of carefully and not just thrown out of the door or else bad luck will descend on the household. A great incentive to recycle yourreal Christmas tree!

Around 80 ladies attended the 21st open charity evening at the Packington memorial Hall on November 13th.

Florist Kerry Evans put together 5 arrangements on the theme of ‘Flowers for Christmas’ from everyday bouquets that would be purchased at the local supermarkets. With the addition of imaginative Christmas extras, attractive but simple containers and helpful tips she illustrated how anyone could produce an impressive Christmas display. The arrangements became popular prizes for the raffle which raised a total of £139. The evening concluded with a glass of wine or fruit juice, mince pies and shortbread.

As a result of the event, a total of £400 was raised. This is a record for the charity evening and has been divided equally between Breast Cancer Care and Prostate Cancer UK.

Ibstock Christmas CarnivalBy the time you’re reading this, Ibstock Christmas Carnival will be in full swing – but there’s still time to check your programme for the days up to Parade Day on 7th December.

A last minute reminder that people wanting to parade should meet at the Cenotaph at 4:00pm, ready to move off at 4:30pm. If you haven’t already, please contact [email protected] to register.

Children’s groups are welcome to assemble inside the Central Bar & Grill, to keep warm while they wait for the off.

As some people may have heard, we had a huge set-back a few weeks ago, when the Football Club was broken into, and Santa’s sleigh utterly destroyed. Although the Christmas Carnival Group were mightily disheartened at the time, we were cheered and humbled by the outpouring of help that came when we put out an SOS.

We had offers to mend/rebuild the sleigh, though sadly it was beyond repair; to lend trailers and towing vehicles, sleighs with and without wheels; and even a miniature steam engine to carry Santa up the High Street. We are thankful for each and every offer, and more than anything we are thankful that we belong to a community that knows how to pull together when the chips are down.

In the end it was two of the local Round Tables that were able to provide us with the Santa transport that worked best all round. Swadlincote Round Table have lent Santa their sleigh for the light switch on, on 1st December, and Hinkley & Bosworth Round Table are sending theirs for the parade on 7th. We are immensely grateful for them stepping up in our hour of need.

While we are on the subject of thanks, we would also like to mention the other groups, organisations and businesses that have helped to make the event happen; whether they have sponsored us with money, goods or services – we thank them all!

Ibstock Community Choir is on tour this Christmas with concerts you don’t want to miss. Their tour starts with a Carol Concert at the Wesleyan Reform Church on Whitehill Road, Ellistown on the evening of Friday 6th December and the following Friday, 13th December at Nailstone Parish Church. Their grand finale will be at St Denys Church, Ibstock on Thursday 19th December.

If you have attended this concert on previous Christmas’s you will know that St Denys is beautifully decorated with a fabulous display of trees in it’s Christmas Tree Festival, which all lends to the festive cheer. You will need to book early for this performance as it will be a cracker.

The Choir will take you through this ‘Wonderful time of the year’, accompanied by the ‘Little Drummer Boy’, bringing you the ‘Sounds of Christmas’, taking you to ‘Bethlehem’s Fields’ where ‘There’s a Song in the Air’ to welcome ‘Christmas day’ with the sound of ‘Jingle Bells’.

So if you can’t make all of the concerts, put at least one in your diary for a night out to brighten your Christmas. We are looking forward to seeing you joining the Ibstock Community Choir for a night of festive joy.

‘MaeFlorenceMusic’ is the name of an exciting new business venture in Ibstock. It offers one to one vocal coaching, using tailored lessons specifically designed to strengthen your singing voice.

With a passion for everything musical, Mae has always been intent on teaching singing. She has undertaken years of vocal training, ranging from a BA honours degree in musical theatre, a distinction in her diploma singing

exam and extensive training in most genres of singing with a range of different teachers and coaches. Now, after obtaining all the required training, she is ready to start coaching.

Mae believes that lessons should be fun and individually tailored to all ages and experience. She achieves this aim by giving people the chance to learn in a comfortable environment, where they feel free to express themselves through song. Singing is all about trying things out to discover what works best for the singer and then working on putting that into practice. Mae understands the importance of teaching and learning in a ‘happy space’.

As well as teaching, Mae also works as a professional vocalist. She has performed at a wide range of venues all over the country and is currently working on releasing her own original music. Many of her songs are already being played on radio stations such as The Eye, Demon FM and BBC Radio Leicester. She was recently been interviewed on ‘BBC Introducing’. Her debut single, ‘I Like You’, can be found on most music platforms including iTunes, Spotify and Apple music.

Recently there has been some local information that the magazine has been targeted from people purporting to be from the magazine and trying to obtain money from local businesses.

Below is some helpful information regarding fraud.

Charitable publication scams happen when a telesales agent calls a business selling advertising space in a bogus publication for a seemingly good cause.

The caller will give the impression that the publisher is partnered with local charities, emergency services, crime prevention or community health initiatives.

Sometimes the caller will say that a business has placed an order previously or even that someone else in the business has agreed to take out the advertising space.

The fraudsters may also send the business invoices, whether or not the victim has

agreed to take out the advertising space. They may follow up the invoices with threats of legal action.

Fraud has been committed if money has been lost.

If fraud has been committed REPORT IT TO ACTION FRAUD.

Fake invoice scams happen when fraudsters send an invoice or bill to a company requesting payment for goods or services.

The invoice might say that the due date for the payment has passed or threaten that non-payment will affect credit rating.

In fact, the invoice is a fake and is for goods and services that haven’t been ordered or received.

Again, if fraud has been committed PLEASE REPORT IT.

When you report to action fraud, Action Fraud does not have investigation powers, however, the reports taken by Action Fraud are sent to the NFIB.

The NFIB’s systems assess reports of fraud and cyber crime from across the UK, helping to build a national picture of where fraud and cyber crime is taking place and how. Experts review the data from these reports to decide whether there is enough information to send to a police force for investigation.

Using reports the NFIB can:

Continually review and data match your reports to identify criminals behind the scams.

Disrupt telephone numbers, websites and bank accounts that the fraudsters use to scam people.

Use the intelligence to help law enforcement agencies build up cases and catch criminals.

Provide fraud prevention alerts that help to protect the public from future harm.

Work with overseas jurisdictions such as Interpol and Europol to highlight fraud that helps catch criminals around the world.

Help to demonstrate the harm caused by fraud and cybercrime. This evidence helps the Government understand the threat and allocate more resources to combat it.

Their services are free, confidential and available to anyone in England and Wales, regardless of whether the crime has been reported or how long ago it happened. The start of being a village ‘Bobby’A short time after I had been in the Force for a year, the Superintendent informed me that I was being transferred to a nearby village, where I would work with an experienced Police Constable but on no account should I socialise with him owing to his heavy drinking. My lodgings were on a farm on the outskirts of the village and I spent two very happy years there with the lovely owners. In all mining areas you will find some very hard but good people and I rarely had any trouble because I always tried to be honest with them.

In those days poachers were a common breed and normally no one ever begrudged them the odd rabbit for the pot. Generally I agreed with this sentiment but my attitude changed one day when, out walking over some fields, I heard an animal obviously in distress. After searching, I found a cat had been caught in a wire snare which a poacher had set for a rabbit. I tried to release the cat but, owing to the pain it was suffering, it wouldn’t let me near enough to help. I fetched some gloves and a pair of pliers and managed to hold down the cat while I cut the wire from around its neck to release it and it went on its

way. Thinking about that episode now, I realise that the cat never did thank me!

Another incident which comes to mind took place one night while I was patrolling a neighbouring village. I saw a man swaying about in the middle of the road and it was obvious to me that he had been sampling the local brew. I attempted to steer him on his way but he became very aggressive and began voicing his doubts as to the parentage of all coppers. The situation got so bad that I was forced to arrest him for being drunk and disorderly. However, this presented a problem as, in those days, we didn’t have radios so I had to go a nearby house and ask them to ring the Police Station requesting some transport. On arriving at the Station the necessary paper work was completed and he was put into one of the cells to ‘sleep it off’. Later on when he saw the Duty Sergeant he complained that I had stolen a £5 note from him. As this could not be found in his property when I had searched him, he was made to strip. It was only after making him take off his socks that we discovered the £5 note rolled up between his toes.

I think we are now officially allowed to mention the “C” word! With Halloween and Bonfire night out of the way it appears Christmas preparation is in full swing with shops bursting at the seams with presents, rich food and decorations. My friend has even put her Christmas tree up already! Is it me or does it seem to be getting earlier and earlier each year?

I absolutely ADORE Christmas and it truly is the most wonderful time of the year! How do I ensure that my family and I have a lovely Christmas? I plan, prepare and keep my cool! Here are a few tips:

Write a to-do list for presents and cards – so at least you know where to start!

Write a shopping list; is there anything with a long shelf life that you could stock up on now? (Quality Street, crackers, mulled wine). If you’re really clever you could get your fresh food shop delivered on Christmas Eve morning to beat the rush!

Look at your to-do list and separate things that you enjoy doing and those which you don’t. Don’t like wrapping? Then delegate or do the things you don’t like to do first so that you are doing the more enjoyable things nearer the big day.

Always remember that like everything; nothing is perfect. We all watch films and adverts and see the ‘perfect’ Christmas and want ours to be the same. It’s so much better to be realistic and practical

and please just take the pressure off yourself!

Remember what Christmas is really about! Apart from the obvious; that it’s Jesus’ birthday; it’s all about spending quality time with our favourite people; being together and supporting one another. Have a difficult family? Set your boundaries; be honest yet kind and try not to drink too much as you may say something that makes your grandma cry! Save the mulled wine until you’re back at home with your feet up watching the Gavin and Stacey Christmas special!

Get back to basics; enjoy the company; play board games; sing and laugh. Whether it’s you that is hosting or a family member; help each other out and share the load!

Christmas isn’t a joyful time for everyone. Remember those who may be struggling or who are alone. Share a gift; send them some food; invite them round or send them a card to let them know that you are there if they need you. My grandma; without fail every year had a random person or people I’d never met before at her Christmas dinner table as she hated the idea of people being alone at Christmas!

Whatever you all do; be safe; be merry and have a wonderful Christmas!

Ruffle lay quietly in the cardboard box that now sat in the back room of the charity shop. It seemed a long time since Ruffle had been part of the Christmas celebrations then mistakenly packed into the box sent to the charity shop. It was very dark inside the box though quite comfortable. He had only been there a couple of days when Ruffle heard noises – people talking And they were getting closer!

Eager to re-stock the shop, the volunteers began to open the bags and boxes full of donations brought in after the festive holiday. Suddenly light streamed into Ruffle’s box as one of the ladies opened the flaps. As she reached into the box to pull out a warm woollen scarf, Ruffle Dropped out onto the shop floor. Luckily, one of the other staff members spotted Ruffle and reached down as soon as he had fallen. They picked Ruffle up and gave him a quick Brush with their hand. Then, having secured a price tag around his neck, carefully placed Ruffle at the front of the display in the window.

From where Ruffle sat in the window he could see the street and people passing by the shop: people on their way to work, children on their way to school - and was that a dog that looked just like Ruffle? Even a horse and Rider trotted past as Ruffle’s bright black eyes watched the outside world through the glass window.

Then One morning, before the shop had even opened, a child’s face suddenly pressed up against the window and looked straight at Ruffle. Ruffle stared back, his eyes bright with curiosity. The same face appeared again later in the afternoon after the shop had closed and again at the same times the following day. But then on the third day the face didn’t appear as usual in the morning. Ruffle was Disappointed as he’d grown used to looking forward to seeing the friendly face.

Later that morning, not long after the shop had opened, Ruffle was gently lifted out of the window and carried carefully over to the Counter. Ruffle sat patiently as his price tag was removed. As Ruffle was turned round he saw the little boy’s familiar face from the window beaming a huge smile at Ruffle. The little boy had gone past the shop As he walked to and from school but the shop had been closed. It was Saturday so no school but the boy had to wait until the shop was open before he could go in to buy Ruffle! The boy stroked Ruffle’s head and ears then examined Ruffle’s red collar around his neck and the now grubby nametag sewn onto the collar. He smiled when he Read Ruffle’s name. Then Ruffle was held tightly between the boy’s woollen gloves and carried safely back to the boy’s home.

The Subtle Science and Exact Art of Colour in Garden DesignThe first talk of 2020 will be in February and is on a topic we hope will be of interest to many in the local community. Gertrude Jekyll wrote: “remember that in a garden we are painting a picture”. As an accomplished watercolourist, she was familiar wi th the principles of using colours. This talk looks at how to apply these principles in designing a border; but a border is different from a painting.

The speaker Timothy Walker is a highly experienced public lecturer, former director of the Oxford University Botanic Garden, & latterly tutor at Somerville College Oxford.

If you are interested in attending but are not yet a member of the Society, please come along as a visitor for the fee of £5, before deciding whether to join. The fee includes a glass of wine or soft drink at the end of the talk.

The Arts Society Sparkenhoe – Review of November LectureWith the Midlands at the hub of Britain’s canal network, the November talk of The Arts Society Sparkenhoe was selected for its local interest and the Society was pleased to welcome 23 visitors on the evening. Speaker Roger Butler took the audience on an illustrated tour of the ‘secret world’ of the history and heritage of the 2,100 miles of canal waterways of England, Wales and Scotland.

The lecture gave insight into the canals’ landscape, architecture, history and culture. We learned of the reasons behind the many different designs and methods of construction of bridges, warehouses, locks, lock-keepers’ cottages and managers’ grander houses. Even lighthouses are a feature of the three canals in Scotland, which all extend from coast to coast. On a spectacular end note, Roger Butler presented stunning images of the 38-metre drop from Thomas Telford’s famous Pontcysyllte Aqueduct at Llangollen, and the Grand Falkirk Wheel, a rotating boat lift that replaced a flight of 13 locks to transport boats 34 metres between two canals.

After the lecture, the audience enjoyed a performance by local choir Ambion Voices of Michael Dix’s piece ‘Three Reflections on the Ashby Canal’, conducted by Rachel Rees-Jones and accompanied on the piano by the composer. The piece captured three phases in the life of our canal waterways: from their industrial past, then a period of demise before their restoration as places of leisure and recreation that appeal to many of us today.

The Arts Society Sparkenhoe presents an annual programme of ten lectures on a variety of subjects, all delivered by expert and engaging speakers. Past and future subjects include: architecture and gardens, fine and decorative arts, street art, sculpture, and famous artists such as Monet, Hogarth and Hockney. There is the opportunity to question the speaker and join in informal discussion after the lecture over a glass of wine or soft drink. Non-members are very welcome to attend as a visitor.

IBSTOCK TIGERS FCFor the first time ever, Ibstock United Juniors U10 Tigers started the 2019/20 season in Level 1; a great achievement and huge weekly test. The Ibstock boys have moved up through the levels over the past 3 seasons. This shows just how much hard work they have put into training and matches. The competition is tough and is a great credit to the young football players from around Leicestershire, showing some fantastic skills and effort. The future looks bright!

The boys started the season well, with back-to-back 3-2 victories, showing that North West Leicestershire was being well represented.

After 8 matches, the Ibstock boys have tasted defeat only twice, scoring 32 Goals in the process. The weather has put a temporary halt to the Sunday morning matches, which has given the boys a chance to try indoor Futsal. This keeps them active, with big smiles all round.

We will be bag packing at Morrisons, Coalville on Friday the 13th of December from 5pm until 8pm, so please come along and say ‘Hello’. Any support we receive is very much appreciated.

You could be forgiven for thinking that family affections towards pets are often equal to or greater than that of a cherished child. At Pet Deli, in the recently nominated ‘Rising Star’ Award in the Great British High Street 2019, Ashby De La Zouch, we understand that more than most. We firmly believe that our pets are not only our beloved furry friends; they are our companions, confidants and for some of our elderly customers, they are the one reason we get up in the morning. Because of this, we only stock the highest quality products and items that we would want to give to our own pets.

Over the years, our understanding of great nutrition and high quality ingredients being at the heart of a dog, cats and small animals well-being, has meant that the market has been flooded with some of the best products in the world. This can only be a good thing for our pets… but what do you buy? What does a nutritional diet consist of?

As a minimum, we recommend our customers purchase feed and treats that are made with real meat, not a DERIVATIVE. We also suggest that there be NO maize in a dog’s diet for sure. Maize is used to ferment chickens and keep them warm. It is put into dog food as a cheap carbohydrate bulker. But, as with chickens, it does heat your dog from the inside out. Your dog may have itchy feet, ears and groin area – this is most likely down, initially to maize in the diet. By removing this cheap product and replacing it with brown rice, the most natural of rice and/or potato, you are still giving your pet a low GI carbohydrate, but without the consequences.

Fish is also an excellent choice for your dogs and cats. The omega rich meat contains lots of nutrition and joint support. The kibble is also normally quite greasy and so for the fussier pet, this biscuit becomes more palatable.

As we enter the season of good will, celebrations and stuffing our faces, it is obviously important to remember not to over indulge with your pets’ treats. Pet obesity is a major welfare concern according to pet health professionals and 32% of pet owners surveyed, admitted to ‘guessing’ the correct amount of food that they feed. It may not look a lot in the bowl, but your pet only requires 2-4% of its’ total body weight, per day. Measuring cups are available from our shop on Brook Street, Ashby De La Zouch.

At Christmas, as with all our family members, buying presents for our loved ones can be a mind-field and an exhausting chore. For dogs, we normally purchase chews and treats and toys. Suitable toys are crucial to keeping your pet safe. When choosing toys for their dogs, owners need to consider their dogs’ size and mouth type, to minimise the risk of swallowing large pieces. Pet appropriate toys are also vital to a safe gift. Certain cheaper brands can often contain toxic stuffing or small pieces of plastic. Kong toys are fantastic for heavy chewers. Founded in 1944, 1st Ravenstone Scouts Group is an active, thriving Scout group, attracting members from a wide area. We have a current membership of 70 boys and girls, made-up of Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Young Leaders. We have 6 uniformed leaders, a number of non-uniform assistants and 13 Executive Committee Members; all voluntary roles. We have an exceptionally high number of Scouts achieving the Chief Scout award. Our group of parents are a real asset; volunteering enthusiastic participation, hands-on skills and support with fundraising. Parents also represent us at various community fundraising and networking events.

Scouting enables young people to enjoy new adventures, to experience the outdoors, to interact with others, to gain confidence and have the opportunity to reach their full potential. We offer one of the few campsites in the District, making it easier for local and inner-city groups to develop an enriched programme of involvement with Scouting as they grow older.

The current Scout Hall dates back to the late 1950’s, with 900 square yards of land donated to the Scouts by Mary Cecily Fosbrooke of Ravenstone Hall upon her death in December 1961. It has gradually become inefficient to heat and maintain and wheelchair access is difficult. Our rebuild project would ensure that we have the facilities necessary to continue to build upon our success and to allow an exchange programme with Scout groups internationally.

A local architect has drawn up the plans for the rebuild with planning and other necessary permission applied for. The group owns the freehold of the hall and the deeds are held in trust by The Scout Association, who have expressed their enthusiasm and support for our plans. The proposals will improve access, provide ancillary meeting rooms and accessible toilets, increase capacity, improve the level of insulation and install modern, energy-efficient heating and lighting, low water-use taps and sanitary fittings.

In a survey of the local community, multiple groups said they would be interested in hiring the hall for functions and regular hire if the

premises were improved. These include local playgroups, other Scout groups, social groups catering for all age ranges, a weight loss group and a local business networking group, to name but a few. With increased letting income and savings in energy bills, we are confident that the rebuilt hall will prove financially sustainable.

The project is being managed by a small team of volunteers drawn from Executive Committee members, Scout Leaders, parents and friends. Together they have experience in building, project management and reporting.

During the last 6 months we have successfully approached local businesses for support and the Scouts themselves have been taking part in a variety of fundraising activities. To date, we have raised £9000 and these efforts continue. All internal decoration will be undertaken by volunteers and local builders’ merchants have pledged free or discounted materials.

UNDER 14s MATCH REPORTLeicestershire & Rutland Under 14s ............5 Worcestershire Under 14s ...........................3Representative County football returned to Ellistown FC with Leicestershire & Rutland u14 taking on Worcestershire u14. In front of a big crowd, both teams never disappointed in an eight-goal thriller that saw the home side come out 5-3 winners.

Leicestershire & Rutland made a disastrous start by conceding within the 1st 20 seconds. To their credit, the goal fired Leicestershire’s young chargers into action, and they equalised when captain H Griffiths fed J Brodella to score.

These two drove the team on and Worcestershire were unable to cope and further goals from Brodella and Harrison gave the home side a 3-1 half time lead. Playing a high tempo game, the key to the second half was for Leicestershire to manage game time and not tire. Not an easy task for a group of kids but they showed discipline and played at speed when necessary. Worcestershire to their credit never gave up and got back into the game at 3-2.

Leicestershire regained the 2-goal lead when the 3rd assist of the night from Captain Griffiths set up Bordella for his hat-trick. These two are ones for the future. Worcestershire set up a grandstand finish by pulling it back to 4-3. Leicestershire finally made the game safe when Max Fisher grabbed a well-deserved goal to make the final score 5-3 to Leicestershire & Rutland.

This game was the result of all the hours that have been put into the training pitch for this very well drilled and exciting team. Leicestershire & Rutland Under 14s have thrown down a marker for other Counties to be aware of.

Over the past eleven months there have been two Poppyfields Festivals and these have both proved very succesful attracting people from far afield who were prepared to risk the elements to see a host of wonderful artists take to the stage.

The proceeds from both festivals have now started to be distributed and our first picture shows Ibstock Ex-Forces Chairman Mark Davenport, presenting a cheque for £1000 to Mike Thorpe, who accepted this on behalf of the IBSTOCK BRANCH OF ROYAL BRITISH LEGION.

The Ibstock Ex-Forces branch have also recently donated an expensive Money Counting machine to the Royal British legion which has proved to be a boon when accounting for all receipts and has also enhanced security.

Both the POPPYFIELD FESTIVALS and the recent MEMORIAL DAY PARADES would not have been possible without the expertise of the LEICESTERSHIRE & RUTLAND 4x4 RESPONSE TEAM who were responsible for all the marshalling duties as well as road safety and management.

Our second picture shows Graham Cross accepting a cheque from Mark for £400 on behalf of the squad.

These donations are only the first and further presentations will be made over the next few weeks so watch this space!
