Diary of Events: January - June 2018 Wednesday 31 January 6.30 for 7pm Andrea Mantegna, The Triumph of Caesar in Rome 50 AD painted in Mantua 1484 - 1492 AD, Hampton Court Where: 2nd Floor, 55 Exhibition Road, London SW7 2PN Cost: £10 for Members and Friends for payment by bank transfer or £15 for Members and Friends for payment by cheque or at the door; and £15 for non members Charles I: King and Collector Based on on the Royal Academy Exhibition: Charles I: King and Collector (27 January - 15 April 2018) A gathering of Renaissance Masters Lecture by Dott Rosa Maria Letts (one of the organisers of the Exhibition “Splendours of the Gonzaga’, V&A London , 1981- 1982) The acquisition of a large part of the Gonzaga Collection from the Dukes of Mantua consisting of more than 2000 paintings by the greatest artists such as Michelangelo, Raphael, Titian, Leonardo, Rubens, Caravaggio etc. and about 20,000 sculptures in bronze and marble and other artistic objects started Charles I collection. Before his beheading in 1649 he had assembled 1500 paintings and 500 sculptures which were sold and dispersed throughout Europe. During the following years, only a few masterpieces where kept by Oliver Cromwell in Hampton Court Palace: 9 Cartoons by Mantegna’ of The Triumph of Caesar and Raphael’s Cartoons of the Lives of the Apostles. Now around 100 Works from major Museums in Europe and America, representing the greatness and breadth of the Royal Collection, will return to London for the first time to celebrate the 250 years of the Royal Academy. Charles I’s love of art created the interest of the English Nation for all art forms.
