Welcome to our Spring diary – a feast of every conceivable kind of music anchored around five major festivals. This year’s Gateshead International Jazz Festival is our ninth, again offering jazz-lovers a richly varied, packed weekend menu; Fiddles on Fire (our biennial violin feast) fills another vivid May weekend; we’re delighted to welcome back the warm-hearted Northern Chords festival; Everyone Deserves Music is a hugely varied week of Community Music; and at the end of May once again we take over Hexham and its environs with England’s only folk festival created for young people – the Hexham Gathering.

As ever, our whole programme celebrates young talent - in this diary welcoming back our partners the National Youth Orchestra in a great Europe/New York/Hollywood programme; Europe’s emerging artists in the ECHO Rising Stars series, another teeming Young Musicians Programme Presents day, tomorrow’s folk stars showcased in Future Traditions, Gateshead schools’ Dance Festival and many other celebrations of young talent, while our own regional Quay Voices choirs visit Tees Valley to sing in the magnificent Wynyard Hall.

musicians like Richard Thompson and Gretchen Peters, Loudon Wainwright III and Beth Nielsen Chapman (doing a songwriting masterclass as well as her concert), and Northern Sinfonia’s hugely varied three months ranges from eighteenth century wind music to contemporary Americana taking in projects with the excitingly eclectic Australian composer Brett Dean, the peerless Canadian pianist Angela Hewitt, the emerging Latvian conductor Ainars Rubikis and returning friends Thierry Fischer and Nicholas Collon – plus further projects picking up this quarter’s American theme.

These three months are also rich in special events, from audio-visual pioneers The Light Surgeons to the latest leg in our wonderful collaboration between master guitarist Martin Simpson and the Pakistani singer and guitarist Arieb Azhar. Our expanding programming in Gateshead’s fine Old Town Hall includes workshops ranging from vocal improvisation to jazz guitar and samba drumming, also offering Needles & Notes (for lovers of knitting and singing!); another Folkworks Absolute Beginners Day, and Zumba Live (fitness classes), with much more to come in the months ahead. And finally, our much loved Shop has now entered the online world – choose from an even wider range of gifts now from the comfort of your kitchen!

World of MusicFrom the sounds of the Indian sitar to the african drums of war, discover a world of music with nanette de jong, lecturer in music at newcastle university.

Four Seasons - Introduction to Spring Musicdenis McCaldin, conductor and former Professor of Music at lancaster university, explores composers including Haydn, Vivaldi, Respighi and stravinsky who celebrate spring in their music.

Who was Bartók?join retired Performance Programme director at The sage Gateshead, simon Clugston, to explore the life and music of béla bartók, regarded as one of Hungary’s (and the 20th century’s) most influential composers.

Introduction to the Piano ConcertoFrom the early concertos of Mozart and beethoven to the emotional spectrum of works by Rachmaninov, Tchaikovsky and Grieg, the piano concerto is an inspiring genre of music. Classical pianist stephen Waller explores.

Music and NationalismMany composers reflect national identity in their music, through the use of folk tunes, harmonies and historical events. sean McMenamin of newcastle university examines the close bond between the composer and their country.

The Fiddle and Dance as Sexual Symbols in Traditional Songas we gear up for Fiddles on Fire (see page 42), retired director of newcastle university’s Folk degree, Vic Gammon, explores traditional songs featuring explicit symbols in a musically illustrated session. age: 14+ only.

Folkworks Hexham GatheringThis year’s headline artists include karine Polwart, Tim edey and brendan Power, blair dunlop, The Teacups, kat davidson and ben Church. Folkworks Hexham Gathering takes place over four days in Hexham and the surrounding area. It brings together young performers in what we believe is england’s only folk festival specifically for young people. add some sparking headline artists, and this adds up to a festival that will surprise and delight with concerts, ceilidhs and outdoor music.

For every performance, one free ticket is available for the carer of those who need assistance to attend the performance.

COLLECTING TICKETSWhen collecting prepaid tickets, please bring the credit card with which you paid and appropriate identification.

REFUNDS AND ExCHANGES Please note we are unable to offer refunds except in the event of a cancelled performance. The sage Gateshead reserves the right to substitute artists and alter the advertised programme without prior notice. This does not affect your statutory rights. Handling fees will be retained in the event of a refund.

Tickets may be exchanged for seats for the same or higher price for a performance of the same production up to 24

Nexus

Thanks to the generosity of Nexus, you can travel on the Metro to and from Gateshead free if you are attending a performance at The Sage Gateshead: simply retain your ticket for inspection on the Metro.

Buses

For selected concerts, we also run concert buses from Hexham (via Corbridge) and Alnwick (via Felton, Morpeth and Gosforth). On Sunday 10th March (Northern Sinfonia concert), there is an additional bus service running from Carlisle. Book through our Ticket Office. The QuayLink bus service runs both north and south of the Tyne to St Mary’s Square outside the west door of The Sage Gateshead. The Sage Gateshead is on route Q1. PArkING

There is a drop off and pick up point at our west door. We have our own car park with lift access directly behind the building. If you enter and exit within thirty minutes, there is no charge. With entry between 6am to

5pm, charges are per hour with payment made at our ticket machines prior to returning to your vehicle. For entry after 5pm, a fixed charge applies. Full details of our charges are available on our website.

Blue BAdGe Holders

There are a number of priority spaces for blue badge holders immediately to the rear of the building and by the lifts in our car park. If you park in The Sage Gateshead’s car park, please take your car park ticket to the Coats Desk, with your car registration number, for an exit ticket.

The Sage Gateshead is designed to be as accessible as possible to people with all kinds of disabilities. Please ring 0191 443 4666 for access information or download it from the visitor information section of our website. Please inform Ticket Office of your special requirements. The Sage Gateshead is open for an average of fourteen hours every day, seven days a week:

9am-11pm performance days.

9am-10pm non-performance days during term time.

9am-9pm non-performance days during school holidays.

The Sage Gateshead reserves the right to fully or partially close the building for conferencing or maintenance purposes.

The building will be closed from Monday 8th April to Wednesday 10th April.

Ticket Office will open for telephone and online bookings only on these days.

HAll oNeThe price of the seats in the A*, A/B area of the front stalls varies from concert to concert: for concerts with ‘Standing available’ the floor is lowered for a standing/dancing area. Tickets must be purchased specifically for this area. The areas behind the stage are not always on sale. Please ask Ticket Office. A* tickets: Seats closest to the stage are offered on selected shows. Occasionally these tickets may have ‘added value’ extras (these will be detailed on our website, www.thesagegateshead.org).

HAll TwoHall Two is a flexible, ten-sided space, and is set up for each concert according to what will provide the best experience for the audience: there are three levels, and levels 2 and 3 are gallery-style spaces. The main options are:

THeATre lAyouT (default): the stage is across one end of the hall: there are rows of seats on the flat floor and some raised seating towards the rear. Seated tickets are numbered, standing tickets are not.

FAmIly lAyouT: like Theatre style, but the stage is lower and there are mats at the front where you can sit with your children. Tickets for Level 1 are not numbered: tickets for Levels 2 and 3 are numbered.

CABAreT lAyouT: like Theatre, but the seats on Level 1 are tables and chairs on a flat floor. Seating around tables is not numbered.

CluB lAyouT: Level 1 is standing, with unnumbered tickets specifying access to the Level. Levels 2 and 3 are numbered seating. Drinks are allowed in on Level 1 only.

IN THe rouNd lAyouT: the stage is in the centre of the hall with seats on every side. All tickets are numbered: areas A (Level 1), B (Level 2) and C (Level 3) are seated; areas D (Level 1) and E (Levels 2 and 3) are standing and not always on sale.

HAlls oNe ANd TwoIn seats on the sides of Levels 2 and 3, you have to lean forwards to obtain a full view of the stage. Please ask our staff for more information.
