Show Review.

By Ian Hartnell, Area Rep.

About 6 months ago we decided to organise our first classic car show. It has been a long and sometimes hard journey it has also been great fun and very rewarding and we have learnt so much.

The aim was to try to raise some money for our branch and for charity, we decided we needed a show committee and elected Ian, Ken and Tony. We started out with a target of about 20 cars and to raise a total of £100 -£150, the landlord of the pub Roger Newton where we have our monthly meetings at the Blue Ball, Sid-ford. He offered use of his car park, however I

approached Roger to see if we if we could use the field next to the car park, he was happy for us to use the field but felt it might be too big! We felt we could attract 30 cars and raise around £300. We got in touch with our friends from the Great Western club who said they would support us with up to ten cars. We also worked hard to get local coverage in all the local papers as this would be the first classic car show ever held in the Sid Valley, it just seemed to grow and grow! We were invited as a club to attend the Sidmouth Chamber of commerce meeting they told us how pleased they were that we had chosen the Sid Valley to have our show. With only a couple of months to go things were moving very quickly, by now we had decided to have various stalls to raise money it was decided to have the fol-lowing, book stall, bric a brac stall, cake stall, wood turning stall all made by Ian Hartnell, a model tram display all hand made by Tony Cleden and a grand draw. Now we needed to involve our lovely ladies. This was the best move so far, be-tween them they got the whole thing organised (behind every successful man there is a lady pushing)we organised a meeting for our ladies and they got to-gether and away they went. We also decided we would have a Rover information stall this would be organised by Alan Firth and his wife Jane perfect for the job. As a club we had purchased a considerable amount of memorabilia to add that to Alan's collection and you have got a lot of interesting stuff, by now jobs were being dished out to all the members. we had begged and borrowed a PA system several gazebos, a marquee and tables.

PICTURES FROM THE DAY... The PA system would be manned by Ken Newton we decided to have 50's and 60's music between pleas for people to spend money on draw tickets and cakes etc. Our show programme had all the entrants and their car de-tails plus a plug for the P4 Drivers Guild, the Blue Ball and our local firm of accountants who kindly made a donation and gave us their facility's to print the programme. On the Thursday before the show we started to put our plans into operation the marquee (borrowed from Ian's brother) was put up and the field was laid out where all the cars were going (by now we had 41cars) we also had the banners for our two charities and our pride and joy the new banner for the P4 Drivers Guild Devon which really looked the part. The following morning we met at the field this time we had a lot more helpers first we put up our six gazebos two purchased by our branch thanks to the P4 guild and four borrowed, one for the draw one for the model display one for the Rover information stall, one for the PA system, one for Kens P4 all dressed for a wedding and one for our reception and communications, it all came together really well, we named it the village.

Everything was in place for the big day. We arrived on site at about 8.30am, some members were al-ready there. We then proceeded to stock up the various stalls Carol, Dell, Sue and Kathleen soon had things under control in the marquee. Tony's model tram stall was looking fantastic, and a great credit to him, as was Alan and Jane's Rover Infor-mation stall. Val's draw gazebo was

very impressive thanks to the donations from all our members, Kens PA system was ready and so was the reception and communication gazebo with Sue and Max (the Watchdog) were ready. Looking around the weather was improving and we all felt we were in for a great day. Ian and Graham's Rovers were looking great and ready for ‘Ride in a Rover’. This involved taking people for a ride into Sidmouth across the seafront and back to the show about a 6 mile round trip the passengers would make a donation at the reception gazebo. By 10.am the first cars arrived, greeted first by Tony Brewster who gave each car a programme, a voting slip and directions to their parking space. Ian then greeted and thanked them for coming and helping to make our show, while Hugh, Martin, Colin and Peter directed them to their allocated spot. By 11am most cars were in place. Linda and Roger Newton officially opened the show and the sun was shinning the show ground looked impressive. At 11.30, the boys and girls from the Great Western branch made a grand entrance, by now all the Devon lads were on a high! We had loads of com-pliments on the organisation

and the atmosphere created by the music. Ken had people dancing to his 50's and 60's music and the show field was swinging. Most importantly, people seemed to be spending their hard earned cash for our charities. The grand draw was a great success with a wide range of prizes. By 4 o'clock it was the time every body was looking forward to, the award for the best car in show! The car voted the best in show was a 1973 Renault Alpine 110 which was stunning, (sorry it wasn’t a P4) the owner, Brian Pengelly from Paignton was over the moon with his award. The show finished around 4.30 and the exhibitors started to leave the field. Each entrant was given a commemorative plaque and thanked for attend-ing our first car show. We ended up with 48 cars which was fantastic, we had a very enjoyable day, with around 200 people through the gate and about 100 in cars this was very pleasing. After we had cleared the show field 13 members and wives went for a meal at the Blue Ball it was a perfect end to a perfect day nearly! Later, Val our treas-urer who informed me we had made a net profit of £780! I was amazed and delighted which meant we would donate £260 to The Devon Air Ambulance and £260 to Help for Heroes and last but not least £260 for our branch funds. This will enable us to do more things in the future to raise money for ourselves and charity, but most of all the Rover P4 Drivers guild Devon can feel as a group we put on a show to be proud of and we enjoyed every minute of it. We would like as a branch to say a big thank-you to Jason Dorey for his efforts in helping us to get help from the Rover P4 Guild to obtain show banners and gazebos this helped us to look more professional and gave us even more drive to succeed. The banners and the gazebos will get many airings this summer at shows we can now attend as a club. Regards and Happy Rovering,

Ian Hartnell

MINUTES OF ROVER P4 DRIVER’S GUILD DEVON MEETING

HELD AT BLUE BALL ON 12th MAY 2011

Apologies from Graham Guest, Jeremy Palmer, Tony Davis and Peter Robson. 1st item Alan asked if the date of the show had been altered this was confirmed by Ken, at the time we had the National and the following week would have been our show and the week after the visit of Ray McCready it was decided that this was far to much to deal with hence the change of date Alan said he had prior arrangements and may not be able to attend our show but would let Ian know one way or another. 2nd item Ray McCready sent an email to the club thanking all the Devon members for their hospitality he said it was a fantastic weekend and a few surprises about the car ,Ken asked when the guild is of to Ireland?!!! 3rd item The Sidmouth Chamber of Commerce invited our club to a meeting (Ian and Ken attended) to discuss a car show for the queens jubilee next year, however it was suggested this could be a yearly show to be held at the beginning of June as this would be detrimental to our show Ian informed the chamber that our club was the Devon club and there for if it interfered with our show we would relocate to another venue somewhere else which would be a shame as Roger Newton has been so supportive. 4th item Torbay old wheels show. Ken explained that he had been told spaces were running out Ian asked for conformation of numbers to be able to book a club stand cost is £5 per car Ken Jim Alan Ian Tony B said they would attend and have booked accordingly. 5th item Ian has contacted Jason Dorey he is very pleased with the progress being made hear in Devon Ian explained what the £500 is being spent on when we have spent our allocation of money send him the receipts and he will reimburse us. Jason has also agreed to send us some overdrive magazines and various other literature for display at any shows we attend Ian showed the club members the new banner collected this after-noon everybody was pleased with what they saw. 6th item Ian explained how he collected a collection of back dated Overdrive magazines and other Rover related stuff, if the club wanted to buy this and start a club archive we could do this with the proceeds from the show Jason did say that we could obtain any missing copies from the guild. 7th item Our show .Tony B suggested we have a separate meeting of the show commit-tee to cover the final planning, Ian asked for suggestions for what posters we need Adam said he would get these done , Ian said he thought it was important to underline the clubs charity intentions for the show Ian has been in touch with both charities and they will be send publicity packs in the next week or so Alan asked how the profit from the show was going to be divided it was explained it will be divided into 3 equal shares Ian reminded members must apply to book into the show and there was a few who have not done so. A really good meeting thanks to all who attended. Happy Rovering, Ian
