What is MRSA?MRSA is shorthand for Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus.

Staphylococcus aureus (commonlyknown as Staph) is one of the mostcommonly found bacteria. It usuallylives harmlessly on human skin. Staphhas become dangerous as it is sodifficult to treat due to a strain of thisbacterium becoming resistant toantibiotics such as methicillin,penicillin and amoxycillin.

MRSA in Nursing &Care Homes30% of the population carries MRSA. Itlives harmlessly on the skin and is notusually a problem in the generalpopulation, including nursing and carehomes.However it can become a problem inthe sick or weak which is why it causesso many problems in hospitalsamongst vulnerable people.Patients residing in close proximitywho have regular skin contact with thesame nursing staff have a high risk ofcontracting the infection.

How can MRSA beprevented?Not only is MRSA spread through skin-to-skin contact, it can also survive andspread through inanimate objects orsurfaces such as linen, sinks, floorsand mops used for cleaning. For thisreason, areas where patients withMRSA are nursed should be thoroughlycleaned using the correct cleaningproducts and techniques.

The essence of infection control isgood cleaning practice. Disinfectingand sanitizing agents are very usefulin killing bacteria but unless thesurface itself is clean, the disinfectionand sanitizing will not be effective.

Community-Acqu i redMRSAA rare strain of Staphylococcus aureusis C-MRSA (Community-AcquiredMRSA) which has none of therecognised risk factors associated withMRSA and affects healthy people of allages. C-MRSA is associated with skinabrasions and has been found incommunal changing areas in sportsclubs where close contact sports areplayed. Other groups of people whoare at risk of contacting C-MRSAinclude prison inmates and drug userssharing needles.

The C-MRSA infection is moresensitive to antibiotic treatment thanhospital acquired MRSA and can betreated using antibiotics, howevergood hygiene and cleaning practice isthe recommended preventative actionand will reduce the spread of theinfection.
