Toby was adopted just two monthsago by Liz Colker-Brown, a teacher

living in Los Angeles, California. Sheadopted the shy little dog from Forever-Home Pet Rescue in Cascade, Califor-nia, where he had been home fosteredfor five months by rescuer JenniferWales. Thanksgiving in the Berkshireswas to be Toby’s first visit to Liz’schildhood home and his new human‘grandparents.’ Liz and Toby flew in onMonday evening, November 19.Two days later, Liz’s parents Sue andJoel were walking Toby in Kirvin Parknear their home while Liz visitedfriends. During an energetic greetingwith a large dog that was off leash, thevelcro strips on Toby’s harness failed, and Toby dashed away. Attempts to re-trieve him proved fruitless—he justkept running in circles, but would notlet himself be captured. Joel and Suephoned Liz right away, but Toby waslong gone by the time she arrived. Asdusk fell, Toby was nowhere to befound. Hours upon hours of searchingproved futile. He was gone, and thetemperatures were dropping into thetwenties. Toby was a southern Califor-nia dog. He wasn’t used to the cold ofNew England. Thanksgiving was a somber event forthe Colker family—Toby’s absence casta pall on the day, with family andfriends searching for hours both beforeand after dinner. When Liz had to flyback to California on Friday, she leftwith a heavy heart. But she did a pru-dent thing: she contacted JenniferWales, the rescuer who had fosteredToby (originally named Jaycee) back inCalifornia. Jennifer, feeling helpless

3000 miles away, started an onlinesearch party for the dog. She went onFacebook and other social networkingsites and circulated a flyer with a picture of Toby. She searchedPetfinder.com to find the names of res-cue groups and shelters in Pittsfield, saying “That was how I found AnimalDREAMS, and figured that a groupspecializing in feral cat rescue wouldhave both the equipment and know-howto rescue a scared little lost dog.” Jen-nifer also contacted Granite State DogRescue in New Hampshire, which hasan excellent website and lost/foundpage. She credits Granite State Rescuefor being instrumental in getting theword out locally about Toby. Soon Sueand Joel started to receive calls aboutToby from neighborhoods all aroundKirvin Park. He was still in the area, butany time someone tried to apprehendhim, Toby would bolt. Joel even set hu-mane live-traps baited with food, to noavail. This continued for another fewdays; Joel and Sue searching, followingevery lead, putting out more flyers, theirhopes flagging. They would spend 4-6hours daily looking, and the other hoursworrying. Then, on Day 5, a Tuesday, amotorist saw the dog cross busy Route7 near the Holmes Road intersectionand head into the woods towards awildlife sanctuary. A tiny black twelvepound dog, crossing roadways andheaded into the wilderness, was runningout of luck. After that, the trail wentcold. For three days, there were no moresightings of Toby.

Celebrating our16th

Anniversaryin January!

On Monday November 26, I opened my email to find a flyer picturing adog from California lost in Pittsfield over the Thanksgiving holiday, witha plea for help from the rescue group that had adopted him out. It was aheart-wrenching story about a shy, twelve pound dog who had gone missing 5 days earlier. I printed the flyer and the next day shared the information with Melissa Tharion, our Animal DREAMS trapping andrescue coordinator. We discussed strategy and vowed to immediately dropeverything and rescue this dog the next time he was sighted. One weeklater, I had the pleasure of meeting this darling little dog “Toby” as I interviewed Joel and Sue Colker, Toby’s ‘grandparents’ who were watch-ing him for their daughter Liz. Toby jumped into my lap, hammed it up forthe camera, and completely warmed my heart. This is his story.

Fluffy is a gorgeous, long-haired gal who gets along with dogs and other cats, and adores people.

She would have easily found a new home if it wasn't for the fact that she's diabetic. That's why she lost herlast home; her people loved her, but were overwhelmed by the idea that she'd need daily insulin shots forthe rest of her life. She's at the Sonsini Animal Shelter, waiting for that special person who believes that everyanimal deserves a chance at a happy life, even the ones who need a little extra help. So we've written to Santa, and we're putting the word out here; Fluffy would like nothing more than to be adopted into a new family.

On first meeting, one would notthink that this quiet, unassuming,

soft-spoken man had accomplished somuch. Christopher Nye, now Develop-ment Officer at Orion Society, a non-profit organization whose concerns forsustainability and environmental issuesis far-reaching, taught in the BusinessDivision, the Sciences and EngineeringDivision and was Director of SpecialPrograms at Berkshire Community Col-lege for twenty-six years, where he in-stituted programs in place-basededucation and service learning. A pub-lished poet, he holds a Ph.D. in Ameri-can Studies. While at Berkshire Community College,

he secured federal and state grants topromote service learning at BCC. Onegrant was to address family violence issues, and it allowed him to beginworking with veterinarian LornaGrande, then teaching at BCC, to edu-cate about the human violence—animalabuse connection. As a way to begin tobring this important connection to theattention of the community, the two ofthem decided to put on a conference, securing funding from the Humane So-ciety of the United States. The confer-ence filled to capacity, and out of itgrew the idea of HAVEN (Human-An-imal Violence Education Network). His thoughtful contributions at HAVENmeetings as well as his support in thegreater Berkshire County communityare invaluable as HAVEN continues to

make its voice heard throughout thecounty and into the rest of Massachusetts.

It is essential to the work of HAVENand everyone in the field of animal

cruelty and domestic violence that people like Christopher Nye understandthe goals of HAVEN and are willing tospeak to others about it.Though his poetry has been published,I suspect he is the most proud of hischildren’s book, the beautifully writtenand wonderfully illustrated, Old Shep-herd’s Tale published in 2004 which focuses on the animals in the stable onthe night of Jesus’ birth. Poignant paint-ings of the ox, donkey and the cow andthe message from the angel at the endabout the goodness and value of the an-imals is a reminder to children andevery reader about why animals are soimportant. It would make a lovely giftfor children and adults alike and can bepurchased at Amazon.com for $17.95.HAVEN may well not exist today

without Chris Nye’s foresight andHAVEN is fortunate indeed to havesomeone of Chris Nye’s caliber as partof the HAVEN group !

For the past eight years, I have fos-tered cats and kittens for the Son-

sini Animal Shelter. We have ahalf-bath/laundry room in our house, and I've come to look at it as a roomthat saves lives if I use it well. Sure, it

would be more convenient to do laun-dry if it were feline-free. But if I say yeswhen there's a desperate family of kit-ties who have nowhere else to go, it'san easy fix to the part of me that wantsto have a positive impact in the world. It's always an adventure. In December,I took on three sick kittens who re-quired lots of extra care, and one didn'tmake it but the others are living thedream now. Then it was a litter of fournewborns with no mom, requiring fromme all of the feeding and cleaningchores a mother cat would have per-formed. (Mamma cats don't get the re-spect they deserve!) One of those didn'tmake it but the others came throughwell-adjusted and healthy. My next vis-itor was Lulu, a one-day-old kittenwhose mother was hit by a car. Hopingto find a new mom for her, I brought inLatte, a cat who had just finished

raising her babies. Latte kept Lulu com-pany and cleaned her but I had to bottle-feed the little one. All of them have nowfound homes. Now, I'm fostering a newmom, Chrysanthemum. She and thetwo kittens she finished raising are

currently residing in my bathroomalong with four young orphans thatChrysanthemum and the older kittens,Ivy and Sweet William, are helping tonurture. Our bathroom is a micro-world, anunderground railroad, an orphanage, ahappy place sometimes, a heartbreak-ing place sometimes. Hundreds offelines have passed through that bath-room door to land in homes. Manywouldn't have otherwise made it, orwould have had a difficult life withoutthe extra help. It's not that hard to do,and it's not a long commitment eachtime I say yes. Have an extra room? Tryfostering. It's a great way to save a life.

Dust Bunny and Baby Powder are two of many kittenswho will grow up to be healthy, well-adjusted catsthanks to the Sonsini Foster Program.

YES! Leather is verydurable, allergen and pethair resistant as well aslong lasting and easy toclean! Leather is also re-sistant to scratches andcan be amazingly strong

against punctures. With this simpleguide, you can purchase leather furniturewith confidence.

Top Grain Leather:Like the name implies, Top GrainLeather is the uppermost portion of thehide, making it the most protectiveagainst an active living environment aswell as being the highest quality.

Split Hide: Split hides are less expensive, but arenot made from the top coat, but a thin-ner layer below. These are less resistantto puncture and need much more pro-cessing for a consistent look and feel. While this type of leather is ok forclothing and accessories, it is not optimal for upholstery regardless ofpets or not.

Pigmented Leather: This is leather that has been dyed acolor. There are two types, aniline andsemi aniline. While neither impliesquality nor durability, aniline is consis-tently dyed leather that hides the natu-ral imperfections like scars andsemi-aniline tints color into the leatherwhile allowing the natural character ofthe leather show through. When youpair either of these terms with word“protected”, it means that it has beensealed with a water based top coat thatwill make the leather less porous andharder to stain. Protected leather min-imizes wear, soiling and fading fromlight. If leather has been classed as“light or medium protection” it willprotect against wear and soiling, butwill not be resistant to scratching orlight.

Nubuck or Distressed Leather: While beautiful and soft, these types ofleather have no protective top coatadded and are very porous and apt tostain. Distressed leather has been wornto give it an old look, which does remove some of that top hide that isprotective. What this all means is that for a house-hold with pets, choosing an all top hide, semi or all aniline protected leather willbe easy to clean, not scratch easily andlook beautiful for many years. Nomore scrambling for the pet hair taperoller before company arrives! Now,with your new vocabulary, you areequipped to purchase new leather fur-niture that will last from heavy usefrom your whole family! However, ifyou love the look of leather, but have asmaller budget, tune in next month forour discussion about the amazing fauxleathers that are available in today’smarket!

In Frank Capra’s classic It’s a Won-derful Life, George Bailey is about toend it all when a guardian angel inter-venes and shows him the goodness ofthe world. Although five-year-old tiger-striped Ripley wasn’t in quite such direstraits when he arrived at Purradise, anangel nevertheless stepped in. Two, infact. And now, without yet passing fromthis life, he must think he has earned hiswings: for his new home is Great Bar-rington’s Wonderful Things—a yarnshop—a match surely made in heaven! When 24-year-old Boots, co-ownersDeborah and Harry Sano’s ultrafriendlyfeline greeter, crossed the “rainbowbridge” some weeks ago, the coupleturned to nearby Purradise for a soul inneed of human aid. Initially, Debbie’sheart was set on a different cat, Sas-safras, but to the Sanos’ dismay, even inthe relative calm of such a store, Sassy“was not a happy camper,” admittedHarry. Unable to cope with the stress ofmultiple rooms and the foot traffic ofstrangers, Sassy hid for three weeks. The couple regretfully returned her tothe shelter in favor of a better fit (theperfect example of how important it isto consider whether a potential pet isright for its new environment—ideally, prior to adoption. The shelter’s staff, fa-miliar with each animal’s personality, can guide you in this matter).

Happily, Ripley proved unintimidatedby his new digs, where I found himsnoozing on a colorful, cat-size afghanby a sunny window. He greeted mewith an elaborately choreographed sniffat my clothing—no doubt smelling myown cats on the fabric—then raised hisface for a kiss. Yet he is clearly sensi-tive to visitors’ desire—or lackthereof—for interaction with him, onthat morning keeping a watchful yet po-lite distance from a novice knitter who,

seated nearby and supervised by Harry, was giving all her attention to the be-ginnings of a baby blanket on her cir-cular needle. A laid-back gentleman, Ripley “hasn’tknocked over anything,” Harry saidwith a smile. If their new pet gets intothe yarn, the Sanos use a disciplinebased on mama-cat training: a lightflick on the nose to indicate their disap-proval. As for the gift area, where thereare breakable objects, they’ve cleverly

tweaked the arrangements to not com-fortably accept Ripley’s girth. SaidHarry, “I’ve moved things around so hecan’t sit.” The couple feels secure in letting Rip-ley stay on his own in the store eachnight, trusting him to behave in theirabsence. Wonderful Things is opendaily, so he is never left alone for morethan a matter of hours. Debbie enthused, “He’s great—whatcan I tell you? He’s funny. And every-body loves him.” If you need a fix of “warm and fuzzy”(and be sure to check out the manyrooms of warm and fuzzy merchandise,if you are a crafter), stop by to say helloto this wonderful fellow. You’ll proba-bly find him at the window, reveling inhis new kingdom of yarn as far as theeye can see.

This series follows the special human-feline bond at Purradise, the BerkshireHumane Society Cat Adoption Centerat 301 Stockbridge Road, Great Bar-rington, MA 01230 (413-717-4244).Open Wed.–Fri. noon–6 p.m.; Sat. 10a.m.–4 p.m.; and Sun. noon–4 p.m.

No one knows what happened toNoah. All that is known about him

is that someone dropped him off at aVeterinary Hospital. The vet there at-tended to his injuries. His shell wascracked open in several places, whichto this day he still bears the scars. Theirshell is made of bone covered by livingvascularized tissue and covered with alayer of keratin. When injured or dam-aged, the shell has the capacity to re-generate and reform. Granular tissueslowly forms and keratin slowly growsunderneath the damaged area to replacethe damaged and missing scutes. Over-time, the damaged area falls off, re-vealing the new keratin formed beneathit. Box turtle scutes continue to growthroughout their life and developgrowth rings. Noah’s shell healed withtime but unfortunately, there were nofixing Noah’s eyes. Noah was blind inboth his eyes. The vet that helped Noahkept him for several years because he

really did not knowwhat else to do withhim. He could not be re-leased.Eventually, Noah wasgiven to an experiencedturtle and tortoise reha-bilitator who contactedme to see if I wouldtake him. I did and helives in an outdoor natu-ral habitat that mimicshow he would havelived if he had been able to see and wasrehabbed and released. He hibernates in

the enclosure as well, just as the otherturtles he lives with.Noah is a native box turtle. They arecalled box turtles due to the fact thatthey have a flexible hinge on the lowershell, that connects the front and back

of the plastron. When in danger that al-lows the turtle to then retract insidetheir shell and completely close up, likea box, leaving no flesh exposed. Theirshell is connected to their body throughtheir fused rib cage which makes theshell permanently attached and not re-movable. Noah is thriving in his home. He getsaround just as if he had his eyes to seewith. His other senses make up for hislost eye sight and he interacts with theother turtles just like one of them. He ishealthy and happy and does everythinga box turtle does except see. He isamazing to watch.Box turtles are very personable. Un-

fortunately many of them die because

of poor care. In captivity, inside some-one’s home, their vivid shell fades andthey suffer. They need to be outside. They have many specific requirementslike high humidity, cool air, warm tem-peratures with vertical and horizontal

thermal gradients, which is almost im-possible to duplicate for them to behappy inside. They need a suitable sub-strate they can burrow into and fullspectrum ultraviolet lighting along witha basking area that has heat and UVB.A shallow pond to soak in and drinkfrom, kept clean all the time. Most ofall, they require a large area to roam sothey can root around to find their fa-vorite bugs to eat. They do not thrive incaptivity. If you find one, determine whether ornot it’s injured. If it is, get it to a Vet orwildlife rehabber right away. Put it intoa cardboard box, close the lid so it’sdark and leave it in a quiet area so that

it does not get over stressed untilyou can get it to someone. Manyvets will take in wildlife and treatthem at no cost to you. You willnot get the animal back and theywill ask you for the location youfound it so they can have the an-imal released to the same loca-tion it was found when healed up.If the turtle is not injured, pleaseleave it where you found it. It’shappy there and knows its wayaround. Do not take it home ortry to relocate it. Box turtles havea homing instinct and will try toget back to the area they camefrom. If you moved the turtle farfrom its home, it will most likely

get killed trying to get back to its home.Box turtle numbers are dwindling be-cause of habitat loss and pressure fromthe pet trade. Many states realize thisand have made laws to protect them sothat it is illegal to even own one with-out a special license in your possession. They are long lived, slow to mature andhave relatively few offspring per year. These characteristics along with gettinghit by cars and agricultural machinerymake all box turtle species susceptibleto extinction in the years to come.

The Sonsini Animal Shelter is blessed to have a community ofstrong support. It's never more evident than during the holidayseason when the spirit of giving is over-the-top inspirational. Theanimals at the shelter are fortunate to have such kind friends.

If you want to find a way to give the gift of love tohomeless animals, here are a few ways you can do it.

Give someone on your gift list a donation to the shelter in their name

If you have a friend or family member who loves animals, this is a great way to help homeless animals and shorten yourgift-shopping list. The person will receive a card letting themknow the gift has been made on their behalf. The money will

be used for veterinary care.

Purchase a Memorial PlaqueFor a donation of $50, a plaque with the name of a pet who haspassed will be posted on the memorial wall at the shelter.

Donate Items on our Wish ListWhat we most often run out of is kitty litter and dry kitten

food. After that, it's dry dog food (Purina One lamb and rice orIams) and dry cat food (Purina One, Iams, or any other pre-mium brand from Petco). We currently need blankets too.

Adopt an AnimalBecause after all, there's nothing more that a homeless animalcould wish for than to be welcomed into a new loving family!

An infantryman who was one ofonly two to make it off of “Hill

Vegas” alive, Harold Wadley remem-bers seeing Reckless coming up theridge. “Generally one Marine led Reck-less and she brought up ammo. Some ofthe gun crew were wounded, so theydidn’t have an extra Marine. She madethat trip all night long by herself. Theywould tie a wounded Marine on her andturn her around and she’d head downthat ridge with all this artillery and mor-tar coming in. The guys down therewould unload the wounded off her andthe ammo on her and she would turnaround right on her own and head rightback up. She knew exactly what her jobwas.”Reckless delivered critical ammuni-tion under constant fire, performing herwork in a human capacity, unguided byanything but her own enormous desireto serve. The number of lives she savedcan’t be counted, and the appearance ofthe little chestnut mare with the brightwhite stripe guaranteed a boost inmorale. Her selfless service in this battle notonly earned her the respect of all thosearound her, but also got her promotedto Staff Sergeant, a title never before orsince bestowed upon an animal. Afterall, her courage and dedication to dutydefined the word “Marine.”Wounded twice during the battle,

Reckless never stopped. She continuedto see more action during the war. Afterthe signing of the truce in July theMarines traveled home, but Reckless, mired in bureaucratic red tape, was leftbehind. It wasn’t until the SaturdayEvening Post ran an article about her inApril 1954,that people became aware ofher plight. In response, Reckless wasoffered free transportation on a ship-ping line by an executive of the linewho had read the article. She landed in

San Francisco on November 10, 1954In retirement Reckless served as mas-cot of the 1st Marine Division. She at-tended retirements, promotions, birthdays, and civilian parades. Theorder had been given that, in recogni-tion of all Sergeant Reckless had done, there was never to be more weight onher back again than a blanket. Thatorder stood. When Reckless went onher daily jog at Camp Pendleton, theMarine who accompanied her did so onfoot.Reckless had four foals, three of

whom continued to live with her atCamp Pendleton: Dauntless, Fearlessand Chesty. One filly died sadly at onlya month old.She died at the age of 20, and is buriedat Camp Pendleton where a monumentto her stands at Stepp Stables. But herstory is just beginning. A YouTubevideo(http://wallythekat.tripod.com/A_Pages/AA-Videos -YOU-Tube /Army-Horse.html) has garnered hundreds ofthousands of views, a new book isbeing written, and a movie and a mon-ument in or near the Korean War Me-morial are being planned. This gamelittle mare was an inspiration to allthose who knew her, and her story willcontinue to inspire all those who didn’t.

Despair took holdof the Colkers.

Eight days had passedsince his disappearance, and Liz and her parents triedto resign themselves thatToby may be gone forever. Sue said“We were defeated” said Sue, “Wethought, he is gone, now we are goingto have to learn to accept it.” Yet just the very next evening, a

Lenox woman looking out her windowsaw a small dog curled up on her porch. The dog looked bedraggled, and whenshe tried to get closer, the dog snarledand attempted to bite her hand. Shecalled the police, who then calledMelissa, Animal DREAMS’ trappingcoordinator, who wears many hats in-cluding substitute animal control offi-cer. Melissa tried to slip a leash andthen a muzzle over the dog, but he triedto bite her as well. As is typical forMelissa, she showed patience and skill,as she sat on the step of the porch andgently talked to the terrified dog, toss-ing a few treats his way, for over 10minutes. When the dog finally relaxeda bit, she was able to slip a leash overhis head. From that moment on, Tobycooperated, walking alongside Melissato her car, where she then spent anotherten minutes holding him while theheater warmed them both. Throughoutthis event, Melissa wasn’t yet realizingthat this was the very dog we had beentalking about rescuing—until she wasable to read his I.D. tags and saw a Cal-

ifornia area code. “I was so excited! The poor little dog—he wastrembling with cold and fear, and was covered with bur-docks. He was totally ex-hausted and sofrightened. And now hewas safe” said Melissa.Toby’s owner was ec-static when she gotMelissa’s call—she

immediately phoned herparents, then texted Jen-nifer at ForeverHome. Each of them describedfeeling absoute elation at

hearing the news. After eight long days,Toby’s ordeal (as well as the emotionalordeal for everyone who cared abouthim) was over. Moments later, whenMelissa arrived at Sue and Joel’s home,Toby sprang out of her arms and intoJoel’s. There wasn’t a dry eye in thehouse. Toby was alive! Toby had traveled 8 miles from theColker home in the 8 days he was miss-

ing. Says Liz, as she prepares to flyback home for Toby and celebrateHanukkah, “the number 8 figures inthis story”—she had only had Toby for8 weeks, and there are 8 candles in amenorah. “It’s going to be a very happycelebration this year, with Toby homefor the holidays!”. In writing this story, I asked everyoneinvolved what they would take awayfrom this experience. Liz, speakingover the phone from L.A. said that whattouched her so was the genuine waypeople responded and how much com-munity concern was shown for Toby.“People were so kind and helpful,

wanting to help find Toby. It reallymade me appreciate how much peoplein the Berkshires care.” Joel said,“Melissa was so delightful whenshe returned Toby to us. Youcould tell she really cared aboutthe dog.”Sue said that in searching forToby, she had reconnected withpeople and friends in their neigh-borhood that they hadn’t seen inyears, and was so moved byeveryones willingness to help.Jennifer, the California rescuer, said that she was amazed at howwell everyone networkedthrough social media and wasespecially impressed with Gran-ite State Dog Rescue. As I left the Colker house afterfinishing the interview, I tookone more look at Toby, sitting inJoel’s lap and looking out the big pic-ture window at the expanse of field andforest of our Berkshire landscape. Heseemed to have a wistful stare for a mo-

ment, but then he looked up into Joel’sface, settled back into his lap, anddrifted off to sleep.
