It’s in your blood, it’s inyour genes – and in thecase of Ranger – his breed.

You see, Ranger is a Belgian Mali-nois, known for their prowess as

police dogs, rescue dogs and in servicealongside our celebrated Navy Seals. Infact, it’s been reported that a Malinoiswas a part of Seal Team Six that tookout Osama Bin Laden. A lot of dogs have a whole lot of en-ergy, but Malinois take it to a wholeother stratosphere. It’s that kind ofthirst for excitement and adrenaline thatmakes Ranger a real player in the grow-ing sport of dock diving.“They are real athletes, they really

need to do a job,” said owner/trainerSusan Herskowitz about the breed.“Having a Malinois is not for everyone. It’s like learning to drive on a Ferrari. It’s not for the average dog owner whojust wants a pet.” Herskowitz is a newcomer to the dockdiving universe. A former architect inNew York City who escaped the corpo-rate grind to follow her passion as aspecialist in Uranian Astrology, shenow consults with clients from aroundthe world out of her Great Barringtonhome where she’s lived since 2004.She’s been an owner of a Malinois,Ysa, for the past three years. Ranger

was a rescue dog who joined the familylast year. But early on it was clear thatRanger (who is also a therapy dog)“had to do something with his energy,”according to Herskowitz.Dock diving has become that outlet.“He’s a contender, but dock diving isvery much a team sport,” she said. Likea game of fetch, Ranger’s jump heightand direction is heavily influenced bythe location of the tossed moving targetor “bumper,” which is basically a toy. Susan’s throw has to be just right. It’sabout timing and physics to toss the toyfor optimal distance and height. Tofully understand this, you first have tovisualize the layout of the dock divingplaying field (or, pool). Picture a rec-tangular above ground pool that is 40feet in length and 20 feet in width. Atthe far end is a 40-foot long dock thatserves as essentially a launching padfor well-trained canine projectile mis-siles, driving down the dock and cata-pulting toward an air-born toy that sailsabove the water. “Everyone’s got amethod for how they get distance fromtheir dog. With Ranger, he’s so fast, therelease of the toy has to be quick,” shesaid. “You want them to follow the toyin the air, but just in front of themwhere they are really reaching andstretching for that toy.”

As most of the dock diving athletesand trainers, Ranger takes advantageof the entire length of the dock tobuild velocity and momentum, like anOlympic long-jumper gathering speedon the strip to liftoff from the board tothe sand pit. The difference, of course,is motivation. While the long-jumperdreams of breaking a world record, standing at the top of the podium andachieving greatness, Ranger’s goal ismuch more simple. “All Ranger caresabout is that ‘I want that toy’ and I’mgoing to do whatever I can to get it,”she said. When a dog has excellent“toy drive,” Herskowitz said “theywill contort themselves to catch a badthrow.” By no means does the dog’ssimple motivation diminish the thrilland excitement experienced both bythe athlete and trainer. In fact, it’s that“full engagement” that Susan saysmakes it all worth it. “It’s fun for mebecause I love to see him excited. It’sdefinitely engaging for both of you.You sort of lose all space and timewhen you’re in the moment.”Still, this is a competition and it’s allabout striving to be better – even if it’ssimply competing to break your ownpersonal record. So, how do you get there? Well, it

takes training. But, again, effective

training for a dock diving athlete meansunderstanding Ranger’s motivation.According to Susan, in practice, youcan’t simply toss the toy out farther andhigher out of reach to achieve results.Like any goal that becomes unattainedtime after time, literally out of reach, the dog will lose hope of catching thetoy in the air, reduce the height of theirjump – which in turn – will shorten themeasured length in the pool. Instead,Susan trains Ranger with shorter tosseswhere he can catch the toy, whichboosts his confidence that he’ll be ableto catch it in the air. In other words, while a successful dock diving team ismade up of strong athletics, psychicsand mechanics, a significant piece ofthe formula also includes Skinner-stylebehavioral psychology. But, let’s not get too nerdy. In the end, this is about all the fun pet owners (andtheir pets) have playing a simple gameof fetch. Well, maybe this is more likea game of fetch - on steroids. Eitherway, for Susan it’s difficult to describewhat the sport has meant to her andRanger. “It’s sort of an intangible thing. It’s a connection, it’s a love, it’s a trust,it’s an exchange of energy,” Herskowitzsaid. “It’s hard to define, we are bothreally satisfied.”

Some were just born to be an athlete.

Dock diving is comingback to the Berkshires!

For the second consecutive year, dogdock diving will be presented by

Hudson Valley DockDogs as the cen-terpiece of the Great Barrington KennelClub’s Responsible Dog OwnershipDays. This annual celebration of dogsand their people will take place on Sep-tember 15 and 16 at the VFW field inGreat Barrington (just south of Guido’s). Last year’s event attracted over 500enthusiastic pet owners and pet lovers. This year, that number promises to be larger.Dock diving is a relatively new com-petitive sport for canines. On command(and sometimes with a bit of proddingfrom anxious owners and a cheeringcrowd of onlookers) one dog at a timeleaps into a sizable above-ground poolto retrieve an object that has beentossed into the water. Canine contest-ants compete in categories that includebig air (long jump), extreme vertical(high jump), and speed retrieve.A number of dogs are now part of the“professional” dock diving circuit. However, there is as much room in thesport for the first-timejumper as there is for theardent competitor. Somejumpers have a long pedi-gree; others are of mixedbreed. To compete as adock diver, the dog simplyneeds to feel comfortablein or near water. Many of the more sea-

soned dock divers at lastyear’s event displayed an incrediblegrace and athleticism as they raceddown the dock and seemed to soarthrough the air until splashing in the

water. A few of the neophytes, however, needed a bit morecoaxing. In some cases, dogsambled rather than sped to theedge of the dock. In other in-stances, a canine ran to the endof the dock only to stopabruptly, as if to say, “You wantme to do what??” At suchtimes competition gave way tocommunity as the throng of on-lookers surrounding the pooljoined their voices in a chorusof encouragement to the hesi-tant pooch. When the dog ulti-mately splashed into the water, the crowd erupted into applause. At this year’s event, which isbeing made possible in largepart by major sponsors Berk-shire Money Management andHaddad Auto, not only willdogs be dock diving and on-lookers cheering. Vendors willbe vending, Pet Partners of theTri-State Berkshires will beholding a selective raffle to benefitneedy pets and their people, one luckyperson will be winning two tickets to a

Boston Red Sox homegame in the 2013 sea-son, and pet ownersand pet lovers whocome from far andwide will delight in atime of fabulous fun, food and festivities. Although the spotlightwill likely shine mostbrightly this year on the

dock diving dogs, event planners HonorBlume and Tish Thorpe are hoping todevote a significant segment of thisyear’s Responsible Dog OwnershipDays to education, information, and in-

spiration—as well as fun. To this end,the two-day event will include trainingsessions and live demonstrations as fol-lows:

• Agility• Ask the groomer• Dancing with the dogs• Frisbee• Great Barrington Police K-9 Unit• Rally and obedience

Also, therapy dogs will be present onSaturday, and on Sunday canine goodcitizen testing will be performed and aconfirmation match (mini dog show)will take place. In brief, every partici-pant will find his/her dog-loving spirituplifted by something at this year’s Re-sponsible Dog Ownership Days. At the end of last year’s event, Honor

Blume noted, “It’s hard not to grinwhen you see people and their dogs re-ally enjoying each other and having funtogether.” We invite you to come grin with usthis September 15 and 16 at the VFWfield in Great Barrington. Both dayswill begin at 9 a.m. Admission is free, although there is a $5 per car parkingfee. Proceeds from the latter will helpsupport a local pet-related charity.

Ayear and a half after successfullyrescuing my bearded dragons Nia

and Drielle, featured in previous arti-cles, I decided that it might be a goodtime to add to my scaly family. I begandoing my research on what reptile Imight want to care for next and decidedon a Blue Tongue Skink; an intriguinglizard native to Australia and aptlynamed for their striking azure bluetongues. Upon deciding on a reptile my nextstep was to find a quality pet store tobuy one from. I looked on many reptileexposition websites and called multiplevendors, finally deciding on a wonder-ful little exotics exclusive store locatedin Connecticut, called New EnglandHerpetoculture. I called and asked ifthey had any blue tongues in stock andthe owner, Mike, informed me that theonly one he had was a drop-off whichhe was attempting to rehabilitate andfind a home for. We agreed to meet tosee if it was an appropriate match, anda few days after that I traveled twohours to his facility. Mike introduced me to my hopeful

rescue andfilled me inon what hadhappened tohim. A manhad comeinto Mike'sstore andsaid that hecould no longer care for the lizard; hegave no real explanation as to why hisback was so deformed, simply stating"I don't know what happened". In themiddle of Loki's back there is a crescentshaped indent, so deep that you couldrest a toilet paper roll on top of it. Mikegraciously took the lizard in and beganrehabilitation. I handled the skink, which I quickly named Loki after theblue skinned Norse God of mischief, and agreed to take him home and con-tinue rehabilitation. I bought all mysupplies from Mike and called my vet-erinarian to make an appointment to tryto see what may have happened to thepoor little guy. I had multiple x-rays of Loki and ageneral health exam performed, which

led my veterinarian to aconclusion that made myheart sink at the reality ofwhat had clearly takenplace. According to myveterinarian Loki had beenkept in a small cage withno UVB lighting and wasthen dropped to the ground

where he broke his back. UVB lightingis important in the production of vita-min D3, which is necessary for calciummetabolism and bone health. The lack of UVB made his alreadyfragile bones even more susceptible tobreakage. My doctor informed me thathis broken spine was pushing one of hislungs up, along with other organs, andthat is why he would sneeze often toexpel air, as it was difficult to breathe. He classified this break as one of theworst he had seen in a live animal. Wedetermined that it would be far moretraumatic to fix his already healed spinethan it would be leave it as is and takeprecautions. I now have to monitor theamount that Loki eats, so as not to over-fill his cramped stomach or make his

breathing any more difficult. He is doing remarkably well and hasgrown in both width and length over theyear and a half I have had him. He hasfinally become accustomed to me han-dling him and is now an importantmember of my reptile shows. The hardest pill for me to swallow isthat his pain and suffering could havebeen avoided if his previous owner hadattempted to learn about how to prop-erly take care of this beautiful animal. Isuppose my consolation prize from thisdisappointment comes from the factthat he is safely at home with me nowand is cared for and doted on properly. His name definitely suits him, as he iscertainly full of mischief, but I love himdearly anyways.

When I visited Purradise on August30, the posted history of nearly

every cat there bore the same word:STRAY. However, rest assured, thestaff does not go about the county likecartoon dogcatchers, net in hand. Everysuch cat had been brought toPurradise’s “mother” location, theBerkshire Humane Society, by con-cerned individuals...as had been otherkitties that, for allergy, landlord, orother issues, could not stay in their for-mer home.Surrendering a cat to BHS need not bea daunting procedure, and safeguardsthat the animal will be cared for—re-gardless of advanced age, pregnancy, ormedical needs—until a new home canbe found. However, don’t just popPussy in a carton and drive up: somebasic procedures do need to be fol-lowed.First, ALWAYS phone BHS (notPurradise) to set up an appointment.Explains executive director John Per-reault, “Making appointments...helpsus control the population of animalsthat are entering our building…it alsogives us a fighting chance to findhomes for all our adoptable animals. Ifsomeone calls today and we have noroom and it is not an emergency sur-render,” he encourages the caller tokeep the cat for another week or so, toavoid overcrowding the facility. Also, are you certain that a “stray” cat

is homeless? Before scooping up thecreature, ask around. Says John, “Whensomeone calls with a stray, a conversa-tion takes place to see why personthinks that it is a stray. We ask them tomake sure that it does not belong toanyone in the area in which it wasfound and we check our own lost andfound book, prior to them bringing inthe cat. We also review the newspaper’slost and found every day.” BHS alsochecks for microchips and ear mark-ings, which may be a tipoff to a previ-ous owner, shelter, or rescue group suchas Animal Dreams. About 42 percent ofincoming adoptees are indeed con-

firmed strays. If the cat has been a pet, be sure tobring along its medical records andother pertinent information (has it livedwith other animals? children? beenstrictly indoors?). And—very impor-tant—was it adopted previously? Insuch a case, “We always direct themback to the shelter or rescue that theyadopted from.” Should the rescue orshelter not wish to take a cat back, “inthat case we would accept [it],” saysJohn.BHS prides itself on being an “open-admission” shelter. “The only way thatthe shelter would turn a cat away is if it

has bitten in the last 10 days,” a pre-caution against rabies. And there is NOFEE to surrender any animal—thoughdonations to support the good work ofBHS are encouraged. At Purradise on August 30, two catswere happily outward bound: Amy ini-tially chose PaPa, renamed Papa Jack, because “he was just so adorable. Lastweek, he was all over me, kissing me...Iam not used to cats kissing me!” Whilehis adoption papers were beingprocessed, she paired him with a po-tential buddy in the shelter’s cozy“nook.” They all got along so well thatBaby Gatos, now called Bouli, wenthome with PaPa Jack. When Farrah arrived at the SonsiniAnimal Shelter in March, she was

one scared cat. It was obvious that shehad some experience with people but inher kennel at the shelter, she growled, hissed and lunged at anyone who openedthe door. The shelter staff set up her ken-nel to give her lots of privacy so shecould settle in on her own terms. For most cats, it takes a little time to ad-just to shelter life, but they do. For a catwho needs morepersonal space tofeel safe, it's a lotharder. Farrahslowly becamemore at ease, butfrom behind herkennel door, shewatched manyfriendlier cats comeand go. Just how doyou find the perfectperson for a cat whowould rather keep

some distance from people? In Farrah'scase, it was a lucky phone call to the shel-ter from AndreaWadsworth. She and herfamily own a farm in Leewith plenty of farm ani-mals but was looking for acat who would watch overher barn and keep it free ofmice. She wonderedwhether a shelter would be

w i l l i n gto adopta cat into a home wherethey would be living ina tack room rather thanin the house. Would weever! We thought thatthis would be the per-fect scenario for Farrah, and that after fourmonths, she would bethrilled to end her stayat the shelter.Farrah started her stay

in a large crate in the tack room to get herused to home base and the people whowould now be her caretakers. They set upa climbing tower for her, toys, a scratch-ing post, and a small cubby where shecould hide. Gradually, she was let out toventure into the barn and the rest of thefarm, where she would explore, but goback to her room when she got fright-ened.

Now that she knowsthe lay of the land,Farrah can be seen allaround the farm."I've seen her at thehouse talking to mybrother's dog throughthe slider window, roaming around theold barn, and sleep-ing on the jungle

gym," Andrea says. "I see her every dayand she always meows her greetings tome but keeps her distance. She's not eat-ing much of the food I've been puttingout in her room, and the mice seem to bescarce. Maybe when the mouse supplyruns out, she will be ready to spend moretime hanging out with us," Andrealaughs. " We really do love her, and I justknow that some day she will be ready tosit in my lap to be loved."

The Massachu-setts formal

legislative sessionended on July 31with an amazingvictory for the an-imals, the passageof a landmark an-imal protectionbill, sponsored bySenator Jehlen. On August 2nd,Governor Patricksigned S. 2192into law; it takeseffect on October31. This new law will do many positivethings for animals including: initiate astatewide spay/neuter fund, require an-imal control officers (ACOs) to receivetraining, allow pets to be included indomestic violence prevention orders(the language from Senator Clark's bill,S. 682, was adopted in the Senate), re-quire humane methods of euthanasiafor stray animals, and put in place aneffective dangerous dog ordinance thatis breed-neutral (and prevents munici-palities from regulating dogs based onbreed). All of this progress will happenat no cost to municipalities or the state– the training of ACOs and spay/neuterprogram is funded by a voluntarycheck-off on state income tax forms –so keep an eye out for that early nextyear and donate what you can to helpthe animals!Essential to getting any law passed isa strong collaborative effort – whichthis bill had from the start many yearsago. ACOs, veterinarians, animal pro-tection groups, state and municipal of-ficials and legislators all helped draft, comment on, and advocate for theseimportant changes and other updates tothe laws that govern animal control inour state. Individuals across the state –including some of you – testified at theState House, spread the word to friendsand family, and let their legislatorsknow how much they cared about thepassage of this legislation. Constituentpressure works; many legislators advo-

cated for this bill and the Governorpromptly signed it. For more informa-tion, media updates, and to see somegreat pictures from Dog Breath Pho-tography, visit www.mspca.org/animal-control. Though the passage of the animal con-trol law was a huge victory for the ani-mals, there are still several months leftin the informal legislative session, dur-ing which time other bills that affect an-imals could move forward, so don’tstop advocating now!S.88 would require the addition of abittering agent to wholesale containersof antifreeze to prevent poisonings; thisbuilds on the law that passed in 2010affecting retail containers. Since manypeople get their vehicles serviced atgarages that use wholesale containersof antifreeze, S.88 is an important nextstep to protect animals. This legislationhas passed the Senate and is pending inHouse Bills in the Third Reading. Please contact your state representativeto ask for his/her support. Visitwww.mspca.org/antifreeze for more in-formation.H.2326 would update the animal cru-elty law to require veterinary care incases where it is obvious that a lack ofsuch care is causing unnecessary suf-fering for an animal. This legislationhas passed the House and is pending inSenate Ethics & Rules. Please contactyour state senator to ask for his/her sup-port. Visit www.mspca.org/vetcare formore information.

Stretch has finally gotten a breakfrom his caregiving duties at Ani-

mal DREAMS. He spent the morninglying splayed out like a lioness withcubs climbing all over her. He is longand lean, with eyes the color of ferns, and he swaggers just like the big catsthat roam the African savanna. Thecomparisons end there though, sinceStretch is a domestic house cat, a male, and unrelated to the kittens who takesuch pleasure in jumping on him andlook up to him as though he were a fa-vorite uncle.Stretch is just one of our rescued malecats who have taken young kittens intotheir care. Gideon, a twenty-pound hulkin black fur, is nothing but a gentlepussycat around kittens. It would takeonly one swipe of his seven-toed pawsto send a kitten flying, but Gideon

prefers to nurture. Then there is Puma, our “cowardly lion.” This large blondcat needed several months of gentlecoaxing to feel safe after the trauma ofbeing abandoned in the wild. But oncehe was ready to come to our office, hewelcomed the attention (perhaps pes-tering is a better word) of the kittensthere. It seems unlikely that these big malecats would be so nurturing with theyoung ones. All three had been livingon the streets, barely surviving beforetheir rescue. Stretch was so thin, andwith his large frame he looked . . . well, stretched out. He was covered in fleas, and his ears were filled with the blackdebris of ear mites. His fur was sparseand dull, and, as is usually the case withabandoned pets, he wasn’t neutered. Hehad a tendency to cuff me with his paws

and to nip during playtime—evidencethat whoever had him as a kitten en-couraged rough play using their hands. It took ten weeks of foster care to im-prove Stretch’s manners and restore hishealth and appearance. The cat that Ibrought to our headquarters at 441North Street this week is a beautiful, friendly, polite feline.Puma, too, underwent a transforma-tion in foster care, and in fact was takento his forever home a few short weeksafter being put up for adoption. AndGideon, our office greeter, continues toamaze visitors with his friendliness, mushing up against them. A far cryfrom his personality at the time of hisrescue from a collapsed barn, when hewas fearful and so aggressive that wewere unable to touch him for fear oflosing a hand!

There will always be kittens for catslike Stretch, Puma, and Gideon to nur-ture, because the kittens keep coming—part of the sad reality brought on byirresponsible pet owners who do notneuter their animals. But here at AnimalDREAMS, our three boys of summerhave shown how strong and loving abond can be.To learn more about the organization, re-ceive more information on adoptions, orto volunteer, contact AnimalD.R.E.A.M.S. at 413-997-2287(CATS),P.O.
