In an era where it's important to bank with those you know and trust, The Pitts!eldCooperative Bank has been a pillar of the community for 123 years.

We don't want to sound catty, but Big Banks are a little too predatory for our liking.Their focus is on the bottom line – not necessarily what's best for the Berkshires andits inhabitants.

The Co-op welcomes the scrutiny that comes with living life in a !sh bowl. So, ifyou're looking for a bank with integrity, character and deep local roots ... know thatit's safe to get back into the water.

Ihave always had an affinity for rep-tiles, so when the opportunity cameto add to my small family, two wintersago,I couldn't pass it up. I decided torescue another reptile and did my re-search on what type I might want. I de-cided on a bearded dragon and beganlooking for rescue opportunities. I found a woman looking to surrenderher sons two juvenile bearded dragonsand traveled to meet her. She hadbought her seven year old a menagerie

of reptiles without doing much re-search on the proper care for these an-imals, and only a year later her son lostinterest. When I arrived I saw many cages andfood storage containers filled with var-ious creatures. The tank which held thetwo animals I had set out to take homewas in a horrible state. It was filledwith excrement, and roaches both deadand breeding. The tank was unfairlysmall for the two bearded dragons to-

gether andwhen I exam-ined them fur-ther I realizedthey had payedthe price forsomeone's in-experience andlack of re-search. The larger female, which I named

Drielle, had the end of her tail bitten off;

most likely in a dominance fightover what little space was avail-able to them. The smallest fe-male, which I named Nia, had ajaw and a wrist that had beenbroken; most likely from crash-ing into the tank because it wastoo small. Nia's jaw injury hadalso caused her to become se-verely malnourished. The ownerhad no answers as to what hadhappened to cause the injuries orfor when they had happened. I took the dragons home with

me and placed them in a cagewhich my father custom madefor me. I monitored their behav-ior for hours to make sure thatthey would be safe in the cagetogether. They have gotten alongperfectly well since being in theappropriate sized cage. Even though Nia's injuries

have healed and no longer causeher pain they do make her a spe-cial needs reptile, I have to mon-itor (and sometimes assist) hereating process to make sure sheis able to grab onto her omni-vore salad mixture and eat itwithout being disturbed byDrielle who is larger and moreable bodied. During the year I take them

with me to schools and camps invarious areas to teach childrenhow important doing your re-search is before buying a pet. These are the most lovable rep-tiles I have ever had. Most peo-ple don't understand it but myreptiles are like my children, we

love each other; Ifeel it every timeNia crawls up mystomach and nuz-zles her headunder my chin, orwhen Drielle lov-ingly makes a nestout of the top ofmy head. I am sograteful to havemade their livesbetter.

Exponential Return on DonationsIf last month’s rewarding andunorthodox fundraiser that in-cluded a $1,000 prize for onelucky donor, and another$1,500 doled out to those whocontributed $10 or more to thecause was a pleasant surprise,August’s Third Thursday willbe twice as nice.

The Good Karma will again takeplace from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., Thurs-

day, August 16th at the headquarters ofBerkshire Animal D.R.E.A.M.S., 441North Street. After last month’s successful Paws forDignity fundraiser netted thousands ofneeded dollars and important exposurefor the cause, Berkshire Money Man-agement and Berkshire AnimalD.R.E.A.M.S. are teaming up onceagain to handout double the amount ofmoney for August’s Third Thursday(8/16) to those who donate. Like last time, Berkshire Money Man-agement President Allen Harris andChief Operations Officer Stacey Carverwill be handing out envelopes with

varying sizedamounts ofcash to thosewho donate. In July, one

of the 100 envelopes contained $1,000received by one lucky donor. “It’s all about getting more and morepeople to learn about Berkshire AnimalD.R.E.A.M.S. and to contribute,” saidBerkshire Money Management ChiefOperations Officer Stacey Carver.“Berkshire Money Management iscommitted to raising exposure for Ani-mal DREAMS, which will ultimately

help this importantorganization receivemore support com-munity-wide.”Berkshire Animal

D.R.E.A.M.S isfunded primarilythrough private con-tributions by resi-dents throughout theBerkshires. Thenon-profit is theonly organizationthat proactivelyworks to reduce the

population of feral cats through the hu-mane trap, neuter, return (TNR) pro-gram.“We were thrilled with the dollars weraised at last month’s Paws for Dignityevent,” said Berkshire AnimalD.R.E.A.M.S. founder and executivedirector Yvonne Borsody. “But, whatwas really exciting was the number ofnew people who learned about our pro-gram and its importance to the commu-nity. We know that the August eventwill draw even more interest and sup-port for our mission.” The Paws for Dignity campaign will

raise funds for the operations of AnimalD.R.E.A.M.S., which includes the costof neutering and other health care serv-ices, operations of the headquarters, specialized equipment and more. In ad-dition to striving to stabilize the feralcat population, Animal D.R.E.A.M.S.works through advocacy, education andaction to raise awareness and activismamong citizens, animal care profes-sionals, local government and the busi-ness community. While many of the cats that are

trapped, neutered and stabilized are re-turned to the community, some felinesare appropriate for adoption. Many ofthese adoptable cats are located at Ani-mal D.R.E.A.M.S. headquarters wherethe you can meet them.To learn more about the organization, receive more information on adoptions,

There’s something about a kitten—be it active or fast asleep—that tugsat our heartstrings. Oh, the cute-ness...the cuddliness ...the vulnera-bility...the wide-eyed wonder! Butwhile oohing and aahing, are youoverlooking the charms of these little ones’ just slightly older kith?

Babyhood blows over lightningquick, but as do humans, cats pass

through a period of adolescence. A one-year-old cat is roughly 15, in humanyears. In teenage kitties, you get thebest of both worlds: often they are asplayful and adorable, as eager to ex-plore their world and relationships, astheir tinier counterparts—yet with amore conscious sense of cause and ef-fect, of the usefulness of language andlogic. A tiny kitten will reach this phasein time, but starting with a young adultcan be a delightful time of discovery, communication, and learning. When I visited Purradise on June 27,

the Sunshine Spa was filled with ado-lescents of the feline persuasion. Al-though year-old Bunny, profiled lastmonth, hid out as usual atop the veryhighest cat tree, 18-month-old long-haired tortie sisters Blazy and Mazymore than made up for her reluctanceto engage, rolling about on anotherstructure to solicit belly rubs. After

coming over to greet me and touchingnoses with a curious Blazy (or was itMazy?), year-old gray tiger Albertoclimbed into a nearby cat bed and glee-fully gathered into his arms as manytoys as he could hold (a plethora ofother playthings still remained for hisfellow residents of the sun porch). I strolled across the room to say helloto year-old black-and-white Savanah, snoozing by the window, Mazy (or wasit Blazy?) eagerly dogging my heels. Not long after, year-old golden tabbyDexter, fully awake on another kittyperch, noticed that my furry shadowhad detached herself from my side in

favor of sneaking up on him. Dexterimmediately dropped his head to hispaws, closed his eyes, and feignedsleep...just long enough for his tortiestalker to drop her plan...whereupon heplacidly opened his eyes again (and, Icould swear, nearly rolled them at me,totally aware of the cleverness of hissubterfuge). Too funny! Readers may recall that, back in May,I adopted then-19-month-old MaineCoon sisters from this shelter as com-panions to my eldest, Sophie, who inhuman terms is nearly 100. It hasworked out very well: Daphne and Zer-binetta respect Sophie’s advanced age,

even standing back to let her eat first;and she seems to enjoy watching themromp, perhaps recalling her own saladdays. (They have also bonded quicklywith me; both are comfortablysprawled just inches away even as Itype.) If you wish to add a young catto your household, please take advan-tage of Purradise’s discount BuddyProgram to bring home a pair, guaran-teeing them a playmate of their ownspecies as well as perhaps keepingpals or siblings together. Reared with plenty of love and play(and toys, Alberto would be quick toadd), your teenagers may remain kit-tenlike for many years to come. What’s a couple of missed months ofbabyhood, really, in the greater pictureof a whole nine lives?

This series follows the special human-feline bond at Purradise, the BerkshireHumane Society Cat Adoption Centerat 301 Stockbridge Road, Great Bar-rington, MA 01230 (413-717-4244).Open Wed.–Fri. noon–6 p.m.; Sat. 10a.m.–4 p.m.; and Sun. noon–4 p.m.

Pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction(or Equine Cushing’s Disease) is an

endocrine disease most often caused bya benign tumor of the pituitary gland inolder horses and ponies. The over-secretion of hormones caused by thetumor leads to an abnormally high levelof cortisol, which results in a variety ofmetabolic changes that are detrimentalto the horse’s body. Common signs of PPID include de-

layed shedding, long wavy hair on theneck and legs (hirsutism), loss of mus-cle mass, a pot-bellied appearance, ab-normal fat distribution especially alongthe crest of the neck, tailhead, andabove the eyes, and chronic or recurrentlaminitis. In fact, one study found thatup to 70% of horses seen for laminitisare found to have PPID. Additionalsigns may include increased thirst andurination, excessive sweating (hyper-hidrosis), dental problems, recurrent in-fections, delayed wound healing, lethargy and poor performance. It is estimated that 1 in 7 horses overthe age of 15 has PPID, although thesyndrome can be seen in horses asyoung as 7 years of age. All breeds ofhorses can be affected, although poniesand certain breeds (Norwegian Fjords,Morgans) appear to be overrepresentedand may be predisposed.Diagnosis should not be made based

on clinical presentation alone. There

are several diagnostic tests available.Resting ACTH and insulin level meas-urements or low-dose dexamethasonesuppression test are most commonlyused, althoughfalse negativeand positive re-sults can occurwith either test.Sample handling, stress, pain, andtime of year canall affect results,so work closelywith your veteri-narian to deter-mine the mostappropriate timeand test to diag-

nose your horse. Occasionally, morethan one test will be required to make adefinitive diagnosis.Cushing’s disease can not be cured,

but can be managed with medication, dietary modification, and other sup-

portive care. Pergolide mesylate is thedrug of choice for the treatment ofCushing’s. Until recently the only for-mulations available were formulated by

compoundingpharmacies, butnow there is anFDA approvedproduct on themarket (Pras-cend®). Use ofthe approveddrug ensuresthat the productwill have con-sistent stability, potency, and ef-ficacy for thebest chance attreatment suc-cess and long

term control. Side effects of pergolide administra-

tion are generally mild and self-limit-ing and may include transient decreasein appetite, diarrhea, lethargy, and be-havioral changes. Occasionally, a tem-porary reduction in the dose may benecessary. 75% of horses treated withPrascend for PPID showed improve-ment in clinical signs. Response maybe seen within 6-8 weeks, although thefull effect may not be seen until 3-6months of administration. Determiningsuccess of treatement may be based on

either clinical improvement or repeatlaboratory testing. In addition to medical treatment,

horses with Equine Cushing’s shouldcontinue to receive regular hoof trim-mings, clipping of the hair coat, and ap-propriate dental care, deworming, andvaccinations.

Grass hay and low carbohydrategrains should be fed to maintain appro-priate body condition. Access to lushgrass, legumes (such as alfalfa), anddiets high in nonstructural carbohy-drates (sweet feed, molasses, etc.) mustbe avoided. Exercise may improve in-sulin sensitivity and promote weightloss in the obese horse. In horses withpoor dental health, corrective dentistryshould be performed and the need forcommercial pelleted feeds should beevaluated. Anecdotally, the addition ofsubstances such as magnesium, chromium and vitamins to the diet havealso shown beneficial effects, but besure to consult with your veterinarianbefore starting any new supplements.

Bugsey, an unclaimed stray dog fromPittsfield, spent all of 48 days at the

tales from theneigh-borhood!

Crops, whips, and spurs are just afew of the “artificial aids” a rider

uses to uses to help communicate withher horse. A gentle nudge with therounded end of a spur or a light tap withthe crop says, “Wake up and listen tome.” Used properly they don’t hurt orfrighten the horse, but they do remindhim to obey his rider and mind his man-ners.Trinity Mom soon learned that I was-n’t a fan of these manners and probablywould never behave properly unlessshe carried a whip to reinforce her au-thority. Holding it up for me to inspectbefore we headed out of the barn shesaid, “Be good, Meenster. No shenani-gans. Don’t make Mommy use thewhip.” I checked it out and was not im-pressed at all!“Ooooh, I’m shivering inmy hooves,” I thought and immediatelyleaped ahead of her. Yikes! I guess you can’t judge a bookby its cover. That scrawny bugger washiding quite a set of choppers. In a flashit had whipped forward and nipped mybutt. Mom tucked The Whip backunder her arm and said, “Manners! Youknow how to walk nicely to the pad-dock.” (Duh! Of course I do, butwhere’s the fun in that?) For the next few weeks, I kept a sharpeye on that Whip, but I couldn’t figure

it out. It never got hungry, thirsty, or bored. It neverbudged from its resting placeon the barn shelf, but it surecould move fast when Momcarried it, and it never missedthe target—namely my back-side. It must have teeth andeyes. It also had great self-control, because it never triedto bite or sting me as long as Ibehaved.Little by little I lost my fear

of The Whip. I decided that ifI felt like bucking, I would. IfI felt like pushing into Mom,I would. She needed to re-member that I’m a Morgan, descended from a long line offamous Morgans who were

all bold, fearless leaders. One daywhen Mom opened the paddock gate, Iblasted past her, whirled, and faced herdefiantly. As she stepped toward me, Ireared up, and pawed at her like my fa-mous stallion father. (I know, reallybad manners!)SWOOOSH! CRACK! Yowee! TheWhip was definitely not sleeping onthe job that day. My butt was on fire—and so were my ears. Mom had a fewchoice words about my behavior.Although I allowed her to lead me

into my paddock, I decided I’d takenjust about enough from that Whip andplanned my revenge. I watched andwaited for my chance. Sure enough, afew days later Mom left it near the gateto my paddock. I spent all morningcarefully checking it out. It must havebeen napping because it never movedor uttered a sound. I sllllooowly creptup on it and then made my move.Clamping my teeth around its skinnylittle body, I dragged it into the pad-dock. I gnashed it and smashed it. Ibashed it and trashed it until it lay therelimp and broken. I pranced proudlyaround it, head high, neck arched.“Take that stupid Whip! I guess youwon’t be stinging or biting me any-more!” When it was time to bring me back to

my stall, Mom spotted The Whip lyingthere looking pathetic. I thought she’dbe upset, but she laughed and said,“Well, I guess you showed The Whipwho was boss.” She picked it up andwe returned to the barn. I behaved per-fectly even though I knew The Whiphad lost its power. Can you believe Mom had it tuckedunder her arm when she led me out ofmy stall the next day? She had wrappeda duct tape bandage around its brokenbody. Even though it was bent andlooked kind of sad and tired, I had afeeling it might still have some life leftin it. Hmmmm, should I assume it wasas good as new, critically injured, orshould I just behave and not worryabout it? What’s a Meenster to do?

The answer was clear. I decided to bejust a little bit naughty to see if it couldmuster up a response. Instead of slow-ing down when Mom said, “Pony steps,Meenster!”, I picked up a trot. TheWhip instantly flicked out and nippedmy rump. Wow! That Whip can reallytake a licking and keep on ticking—justlike me. It looks like I’ve met mymatch!

gingerly chasing a cat toy for the firsttime since his arrival two weeks ago. When we rescued him, he was de-pressed and hardly moved. This mam-moth of a cat, at 23 pounds, shed hisdreadlocks at the groomers last week, and now sports an airy summer “do” abuzz haircut along his back. Slim wasrescued from an apartment after hisowner died and his home was emptiedout. Middle aged and grossly obese, poor Slim had been unable to groomhimself and ended up with mats whichmorphed into tight dreadlocks measur-ing 6 inches long. The other day hepurred for the first time, and startedplaying with toys. Slim is on the look-out for a new owner who can be firmabout a restricted diet so he will lose theextra pounds and become fit again. Meanwhile, “Puma” is lounging on

his carpeted cat perch, surveying thekittens romping around at floor level.Puma was abandoned at one of ourferal feeding stations last year, and afterhis rescue spent months in foster care, hiding and fearful of everyone but hisfoster mom. It took him months to“graduate” to the point where he wasready to go from foster home to ouradoption location at 441 North Street inPittsfield. Even then, he had a short re-

gression, which is not uncommon forcats moving to a new place, but the ar-rival of 6 orphaned kittens brought outthe nurturer in him. The kittens fol-lowed him around as though he weretheir favorite uncle, mimicking every-thing Puma did. The other day Pumawas visited by a woman battling can-cer. When she sat down on Puma’sloveseat to pet him, he immediatelysought out her tumor site and pressedhis body into it. For a tranquil half hour,Puma and the woman bonded, both re-stored by the encounter. Puma hasshown himself to be a very sensitive, intuitive cat, and has a new title on hisadoption profile: our Healing Cat.Animal DREAMS Feline Rescue trulyis a place of healing. Our space is voidof metal cages and stressed out animals.Instead, our rescued felines relax in thesunshine, run up and down the lengthyspace, and forge friendships in “Julia’sPlace,” our giant floor to ceiling playenclosure. Their time with us as theyawait adoption is filled with enrichmentand love. But we humans also benefitin countless ways from our interactionswith these wonderful cats. The knowl-edge that these cats and kittens wouldhave fallen through the cracks andlikely be dead had we not intervened, gives us the fortitude to keep goingafter 12 years and 3500 cat rescues. Asa small not-for-profit with a dauntingmission, we are 100% dependent ondonations and therefore always under adark cloud of uncertainty—will we run

out of funds, will we have enoughspace and foster homes for all the kit-tens which come in seasonal waves, will we have enough volunteers to keepour programs alive? Our needs are ur-gent, but the rewards to the giver aregreat. There is no other organizationlike ours in Berkshire County—we res-cue the frightened cats and kittens liv-ing in the streets and barns—felinesthat no other organization will help, andprovide spaying/neutering/vaccinationsand a much better life.At the 3rd Thursday celebration inPittsfield last week, good karma was inabundance, when Berkshire MoneyManagement generously rewardedeveryone who made a donation to Ani-

mal DREAMS that evening. TheirPaws for Dignity campaign was a cele-bration of the good feeling that comesfrom giving—and the atmosphere wasabuzz with joy. This month’s event willbe even better. Be sure to stop by for avisit—not just on 3rd Thursday, but anyday, and experience the healing powerof Good Karma.

The Massachusetts formal legislativesession ended on July 31 with an

amazing victory for the animals, thepassage of a landmark animal protec-tion bill, sponsored by Senator Jehlen. On August 2nd, Governor Patricksigned S. 2192 into law; it takes effecton October 31. This new law will domany positive things for animals in-cluding: initiate a statewide spay/neuterfund, require animal control officers toreceive training, allow pets to be in-

cluded in domestic violence preventionorders (the language from SenatorClark's bill, S. 682, was adopted in theSenate), require humane methods of eu-thanasia for stray animals and preventdangerous dog ordinances that aren’tbreed-neutral. All of this progress willhappen at no cost to taxpayers, munic-ipalities, or the state it is funded by avoluntary check-off on state income taxforms – so keep an eye out for that earlynext year!

Essential to getting any law passed isa strong collaborative effort – whichthis bill had from the start many yearsago. Animal Control Officers, veteri-narians, animal protection groups, stateand municipal officials and legislatorsall helped draft, comment on, and ad-vocate for these important changes andother updates to the laws that governanimal control in our state. Individualsacross the state – including some of youtestified at the State House, spread the

word to friends and family, and let theirlegislators know how much they caredabout the passage of this legislation. Inturn, many legislators advocated forthis bill and the Governor promptlysigned it.

Falstaff is a beautiful four-year-old gray cat whocame to the Sonsini Shelter by way of a land-

lord who found him in a vacated apartment. Lifeisn't quite the same for Falstaff as it is for mostother cats. He has a heck of a time standing up, andhe's a bit wonky when he's trying to get around. Butthat doesn't bother Falstaff; he's had that challengeall of his life, and he's learned how to live with it.Falstaff has cerebellar hypoplasia, a condition that occurred when the partof his brain that controls fine motor skills and coordination did not com-pletely form at birth. It doesn't cause him any pain, and will not shorten hislife expectancy. It just takes a little more time to do things. That's okaywith Falstaff; he's in no hurry. The really important thing about this cat is,he's got an outstanding personality! He gets along great with kids and lovesthe company of other cats.

Those are the qualities Janice Chlopecki noticed most when she met Fal-staff while volunteering at the shelter. Janice told us "The minute I sawhim, I knew I'd need to take him home. I couldn't think of letting this greatcat stay at the shelter". After just 12 days, Falstaff found his forever homewith Janice. "He finds a way to do everything he wants to," Janice says."He likes to sit on the window sill, and he jumps on my bed. He's a verysmart cat and comes when I call him." Janice is a doting mom to Falstaff. In return, he will remind her every day that hardships can be overcome, andlimitations don't stand in the way of living a happy life.
