Script of Bill Tubbs’ presentaon of the Changemaker Award, June 22, 2012:

TO: NORTH SCOTT ROTARY

District Governor Don Pa,erson is out of town and asked me to present a special award to North Sco, Rota-

ry.

Every year, the president of Rotary Interna8onal chooses a theme and challenges clubs to do ac8vi8es in Ro-

tary's Avenues of Service – Club, Community, Voca8onal, Interna8onal, and Youth (New Genera8ons).Clubs

that do this receive the Presiden8al Cita8on, which North Sco, Rotary has received annually for many years.

Addi8onally, the president sets criteria that are tougher to meet for a higher award. This year's RI President,

Kalyan Banerjee of India, called this award the "Changemaker Award." In District 6000, just two clubs received

the Changemaker Award in 2011-12 – North Sco, and West Liberty.

But the award that Governor Don asked me to present is the Changemaker Award for clubs of 50 or more

members in Zone 28. What it a Zone? There are 34 Zones in the Rotary world and we are in Zone 28, which in-

cludes 12 districts, and clubs in Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota, North Dakota, Wisconsin, and a por8on of

Ontario, Canada.

Based on criteria that were submi,ed to Governor Don in March and forwarded to Rotary Interna8onal,

North Sco, Rotary was judged the best club of 50 or more members in this region. We were then one of 34

clubs who were eligible for the Rotary Interna8onal Changemaker Award that was presented at the RI Conven-

8on last month in Bangkok, Thailand. That award was won by the Rotary Club of Roseville, in District 5180 in

California. I know this because their club president, Brian Gladden, traveled with me to India in February and

men8oned it in a recent e-mail to the group. I replied that Roseville must be a very good club, because North

Sco, Rotary was the winner in Zone 28! The Zone selec8on was by Betsy Demaray of Saulte Ste. Marie, Mich.,

who is our director on the Rotary Interna8onal board. She is the first woman from North America to serve on

the RI Board!

What did North Sco, Rotary do to achieve this dis8nc8on? Here are some of the things:

• We inducted members under the age of 40.

• We have three or more fellowship events that involve non-Rotarians.

• We have undertaken a significant public image campaign in the community.

• We have a leadership plan that involves all members on commi, ees.

• Our members display the Declara8on of Rotarians in Business and Professions at their places of business.

• We have been involved in voca8onal programs (Career Day) in the community.

• We put the Four-Way Test in the Student Dic8onaries.

• We have membership days that tell non-Rotarians about Rotary.

• We do a community environmental project: cleaning the flower beds on LeClaire Road in Eldridge.

• We partner with organiza8ons like Special Olympics and many others to provide community service.

• We have done fundraising to create awareness of polio eradica8on.

• We sponsored two Rotary Founda8on Matching Grants to address world poverty and ensure environmen-

tal sustainability.

• We give to The Rotary Founda8on.

• We par8cipate in Rotary Founda8on programs such as Group Study Exchange.

• We have sent Rotarians as volunteers to other countries.

• We are chartering an Interact Club at North Sco, Junior High.

• We supported youth at RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards).

• We hosted and sent Youth Exchange students.

And many more.

It takes many members and club leadership to do this. Congratula8ons to North Sco, Rotary!
