50 years from now, when we celebrate the 100th anniversary of the world’s

first skate contest, there will be much discussion about the legends, places and events within the world of skateboarding. It’s hard to look that far ahead, but the truth is that none of the experiences we’ve had or will have in skateboarding would be possible without the grassroots. These are the people who spend hours dedicating their time to building something. It doesn’t matter if it’s a new product or an event – all that matters is that someone, somewhere has decided to step up and do something.

It can be something as simple as starting a slide jam or as complex as new geometry for a truck. From the time an idea is conceived until it is realized, it can be a tumultuous path. Ideas are like seeds. You plant them, nurture them and hope they will grow. Of course some ideas wither and never really expand beyond a few people. But occasionally, there is an individual or a small group that truly revolutionizes things. It can take years, but when an idea becomes a movement, great things can happen.

Passionate people from the grassroots can cultivate some extraordinary things. For example, over 22 years ago, three friends in La Jolla, California developed a unique view of skateboarding. They founded Sector 9 and through perseverance and endless creativity, their ideas spread around the world in a remarkable way.

In this, our 11th edition, you will find both small and large companies. All these companies were built from the ground up and we are proud to showcase their products here. The buyer’s guide celebrates all these wonderful ideas that people want to spread. For this reason, I am dedicating this issue to all those who have been a part of the grassroots.

HERE’S TO THE GRASSROOTS!

Enjoy the issue & welcome to spring!

A dialed-in griptape job is crucial to every setup, regardless of riding discipline. Griptape is the connecting point between you and your board, and like the rest of your setup, should be dialed-in to fit your personal riding style. Here’s the basic info on some common griptape styles and gripping techniques:

Fine grit is the standard griptape style that has been used for decades, most commonly on street and pool setups. The grit of the griptape reflects the size of the sand-like pieces (usually silicon carbine) making up the surface of the griptape. Fine grit grip is typically thin and light-weight with very small silicon carbine pieces. It provides an adequate grip to help you stay on your board and is ideal for Ollies and flip-tricks. Here is a board gripped with Flypaper Griptape

Course grit griptape is made using larger pieces of silicon carbine, creating a rocky surface. Some course grit grip manufacturers cover the surface of their grip with a resin to prevent the larger pieces of silicon carbine from flaking off. The sharp, rocky surface of course grit grip makes it ideal for downhill skating and freeriding, by keeping your shoes locked-down even with strong sideways forces when cornering or sliding. However, many skaters find course grit grip too sharp for Ollies and flip-tricks because it tears up shoes too quickly. Here is Madrid Thumbcutter Griptape which comes with a band-aid in the packaging

Beside grit selection, there are many other ways to customize your griptape job to your riding style. Many skaters like to wrap the rails of their skateboards at key points. This is helpful when grabbing rails or to obtain greater leverage when throwing your board out sideways. Here is some Gangster Grip wrapped around the rail of a Madrid Kraken

Stacking griptape can also be used to create reference points for your feet or to provide extra grip in specific areas. Grant Kiessling added this strip of Grangster Grip to the tail of his Madrid Havoc to get a little more grip for his toeside slides:Lastly, griptape provides a great opportunity to express your personal style and add a unique touch to your board. Everyone appreciates a badass griptape job, so get creative with it and keep it fun!

They say that everything is bigger in Texas; this is especially true when it comes to garage racing in Houston. This

adage was proven when the Team NoBull & Carve Skateshop hosted the Bayou Battle, Texas’ first legal garage race, from January 16-18, 2015. It was the largest garage race in history and certainly the largest garage race podium purse of $6,000. Team NoBull is an unaffiliated, self-funded group of longboarding ambassadors who focus on racing. The team was founded a couple of years ago in Houston, Texas and has recently begun including members outside of Texas and the U.S. The NoBull crew has been hosting full-contact outlaw races throughout the city for years.

Page 33: Cw 2015 Buyer's Guide

As the races grew in attendance and popularity, the crew was faced with a serious problem. They wanted to give their unique brand of racing to the masses, but knew it would be foolish to invite those from out of town, professionals and young groms to a race that ran the risk of being raided by the police. Last year, Scotty Sheridan of Carve Skateshop and I began working on obtaining approval for a legally sanctioned race in Houston. The critical piece to this was the help (including the insurance assistance) that Jonathan Strauss along with the IDSA provided. Ultimately their perseverance and overall stoke finally paid off when the Hobby Center Parking Garage in downtown Houston approved this groundbreaking event. Realizing that there had to be more than just a $6,000 purse and a garage race to entice skaters to travel to Texas, the Bayou Battle boys decided to make it an entire weekend of both skateboarding and longboarding. Both Team NoBull’s and Carve Skateshop’s goal for this event was to bring the skateboarding and longboarding communities together.

The NoBull Bayou Battle, held the weekend after King Of Kona, was three days of multiple skating events:

Friday: A skate Jam at Spring Skatepark, the largest skatepark in the U.S. and at night, a practice session at the race garage

Saturday: A LDP race along Houston’s bayou followed by the main event at the Hobby Center Garage; Saturday night’s after-party was rumored to be legendary

Sunday: A ditch jam at Houston’s legendary EZ-7 ditch

The Bayou Battle was a huge success and was attended by over 200 racers from around the country. It was the largest skateboarding event ever held in Texas with as many as 300 spectators at the garage race on Saturday night. Skaters were drawn to Houston by the uniqueness of the competition, the three days of skating and the $6,000 purse. Title sponsor Jenni’s Noodle House fed the skaters and their thirst was quenched by title sponsor Lucky Buddha Beer over the weekend. Other title sponsors included Bombsquad Longboards and Waterloo Wheel Designs.

The Hobby Center has agreed to make this an annual event, so add this to your calendar of must-attend skate weekends. Next year’s event promises to be even bigger and better given the joy, stoke and hospitality that everyone experienced. The 2016 Bayou Battle will change its race format to handle the number of attendees by extending the garage race to a full day. It also will seek to close the street outside of the garage therefore creating a “bomb-out” finish. Additional improvements for 2016 will be increasing the length of its LDP course and securing several of the local skateparks exclusively for the event.

The success of the Bayou Battle Garage Race has already spurred talk of a garage

racing series. Skaters in California, Florida, Michigan, Washington and Canada have all reached out to Team NoBull and the IDSA to ask about the approval process. What’s particularly appealing about garage racing is that it is completely inclusive. There were heats at the Bayou Battle where 12 year-old Groms were racing with their dads and competing in the same heat as the professionals. Within the racing community, there are limited avenues for groms and newbies to experience the thrill of competition alongside the pros without buying leathers and donning a full face. Since most garages are in urban areas, legal garage racing opens up an entirely new avenue to introduce longboarding to the masses and bring competitive skating to the inner cities.

Many notable riders and pros attended The Bayou Battle including: James Kelly, Louis Pilloni, Dillon Stephens, Billy Bones, Brandon Tissen, Adam Yates, Katie Neilson, Jacob Lambert, Dave Leslie, Anna O’Neill, Brian Cortright, Kaspar Heinrici, and Jeffrey Vyain. Beyond the podium cash, the open class garage race winners also received coveted Coast Medals and Maryhill Freeride complimentary registration. With the support of over 30 sponsors, the prizes were plentiful and the stoke palpable.

When it comes to riding, each of us has our own personal view on what works. The

truth is that skaters are truly spoiled for choice. There are an unlimited number of ways that you can set up your ride. We had a chance to ask some of your favorite riders what they rode and why it worked for them.

I’m going top-mounted this year and switching over to the Original Skateboards Baffle 37. I have mounted the Ronin Pro-Lite Billets with a 45 degree base plate in the front and a 30 degree in the back, complete with RipTide bushings. My Rad Advantages keep me ripping and gripping through corners. To top it all off, I have some RDVX and a PSD footstop to keep me even more locked on to my board.

I designed my board to be simple yet functional. It is not a crazy over-engineered mold like a lot of other boards out there today. It has micro-drops and a nice tub concave to lock you in. If you’re doing it right, that’s all you need. I keep it set up with 10” 44 Calibers, Blood Orange wedge bushings, and rotate between any of the duros and sizes of my pro-model Blood Orange wheel line up. I’m stoked on the way it rides!

I ride the Loaded Truncated Tesseract  because it has the perfect W-concave to keep me locked in while I’m blasting toesides. The awesome wheel wells make it so there’s never any chance for wheelbite and I always know where I am on the board. I like to freeride on the yellow 86a Oranagatang Keanus because they slide for days and almost never wear down. If it’s a bit hotter out, I like the purple 83a Keanus to keep from icing out too easily. I ride 44 degree Caliber trucks for their stability and predictability when going fast and sliding big.

I designed my board to be fun and simple. At the end of the day I wanted it to be a skateboard, not a Nascar-esque hill bomber. I’m stoked on how it shaped out! My board features a tub concave that binds your feet for downhill and free-riding, a mellow rocker, and a micro-drop to lock in your slides. The micro-drop is subtle, so no top mount agility is sacrificed. Two more things to mention about my board would be the fully functional kick tail, and the four leaf clover that makes you go 10% faster. I set mine up with Caliber Precisions or Caliber II’s, Blood Orange barrel or wedges, and my Rider Approved Design pro-model wheels.

My setup is a DB Longboards Stalker II with the shortest wheelbase for the most grip, Atlas Trucks and 77a Cloudride Freerides, which are fun wheels for any type of riding and leave the most thane out of any wheel.

The Osteon from Landyachtz has a micro-drop in the front that helps me know that my foot is exactly where I want it to be. It also has a slight w-concave in the back and rocker throughout the board. Add a small kicktail at the end and I’ve got a fully functional downhill skateboard.

I choose to ride the Bear Precisions because I feel they are some of the best trucks on the market. After doing racing for many years I’ve grown to love split angle. When it comes to bearings I really like the convenience of the Bear Spaceballs. Anybody that has been at a race changing wheels every run knows the struggle of dropping a bearing spacer or loosing a speed ring. Now that is something I don’t gotta worry about. For griptape, I prefer the coarse Gangster Grip. It keeps my feet in place and doesn’t melt away in the rain.

My bushings are simple: Venom Barrels in the Standard formula. The icing on the cake for my DH setup is the Bombsquad Brass Knuckle footstop. In combination with the micro-drop on the front of my board, I know exactly where my foot is and have incredibly good leverage for turns.

I am from Sao Paulo, Brazil and currently ranked 17th in the IDF Open Skateboard Rankings. I have a quiver mentality and test out everything I ride. I know what works and I am not afraid to set up my kit outside the box. I’ve chosen the Invasion Series Black Death 36.0 – this one of my favorites for IDF races. I also ride 175mm Liquid CNC trucks with a 50/30 split. Biltin Bearings and Abec 11 75mm Reflex BigZig in 83A on the front and 80A on the back.

With over eight years racing, I’ve had the opportunity to tune and perfect my racing style and find what equipment complements it. Designing my pro-model board the “Fortune” with Rayne is a major part of matching creative ideas to tangible results. The Orangatang Kegel’s are snappy in transition from grip to slide, making them an ideal race wheel for minimum controlled braking. I use Zealous Bearings and Ronin Trucks, which have a superb ability to maximize grip, and be lively yet stable at the highest of speeds.

Born in 2002 under the Turner brand, this line ofthree classic wheel shapes was re-named 3dm in2003 and brought under the management of Seis-mic Skate Systems in 2004. In the early and mid-dle 2000s, the 62mm Cambria, 68mm Avalon and75mm Avila literally wrote the book on perform-ance race shapes and utterly dominated interna-tional slalom racing. Importantly, the 75mm x65mm Avila was THE original big, wide wheel –the prototype for modern downhill race shapes. These three wheels are still used by elite racersaround the world, as well as by cruisers andcarvers of every stripe. seismicskate.com

Aluminati Skateboards was founded in 2013 with a mission to create a better riding, longer lasting cruiser board. These aircraft grade aluminum decks are perfectly balanced and feature unique scratch-resistant graphics on both the bottom and top of the deck. A revolutionary integrated clear grip application lets you actually see what you are riding. Equipped with Alumanti 60mm 78A wheels and 3.25” Aluminati trucks these cruiser boards will “enlighten” you to a new level of fun. Currently offering 3 shapes in a plethora of designs. Forget the plastic toys, step up to the Aluminati.
