How it Works

The Viewrail cable rail system is comprised of two mounting options for wood posts, each utilizing our hallmark hidden-fastener innovations that keep your project simple and elegant. Our mounting options are the Wood Dual Inside Post Mount, and the Standard Mount. The following diagrams and descriptions are a great way to get familiar with our cable rail system.

The Wood Dual Inside Post MountThe Wood Dual Inside Post Mount is designed for use in wood post projects where both sides of a post are not accessible at both ends of a cable run. All posts will be drilled with half inch holes all the way through the post, except for the posts receiving the Wood Inside Post Mounts. Those posts will have a half inch hole drilled 1 11/16" deep, which will then have the Wood Inside Post Mounts screwed into them. Now a Threaded Crimp Fitting is crimped to one end of the cable and threaded into the Wood Inside Post Mount. Cable and Insert Sleeves are strung, and the other end of the cable is measured, cut, strung with an Uncrimped Threaded Crimp Fitting, and crimped with a Cable Stop.

The Uncrimped Threaded Crimp Fitting and Cable Stop are inserted into the Wood Inside Post Mount. Using the tools provided in the Viewrail Rental Tool Kit, these two parts are threaded together and tightened, which pushes the Cable Stop in to create tension. Tighten until the appropriate amount of tension is achieved. Tap in the Insert Sleeves and you’re finished.

[Not recommended for cedar. Testing shows the screws will hold over 1000 pounds in Southern Yellow Pine.]

The Standard MountThe Standard Mount can be used with wood or steel posts and requires half inch holes to be drilled in preparation for the stainless steel cable and components. A Fixed End Fitting is crimped to one end of the cable. Next, the cable is strung through the posts, making sure any Insert Sleeves have been strung as well. The other end of the cable is now measured and cut to the proper length, after which a Threaded Crimp Fitting is crimped to it.

The Threaded Crimp Fitting and cable are inserted into one side of the post, while a Tension Receiver is inserted into the opposite side of the same post. Using the tools provided in the Viewrail Tool Kit, these two parts are threaded together and tightened until the appropriate amount of tension is achieved. Tap in the Insert Sleeves and you’re finished.

Wood Angle Insert – VR336This part serves the same purpose as the Insert Sleeve, except it is used whenever cable passes through a post at an angle. (as with stairs, etc.)

Components

Here you’ll find all of the parts in our Bundles, as well as a variety of fittings, sleeves, and washers that give the Viewrail Cable Rail System the flexibility your project demands.

Tension Receiver – VR301This part is threaded inside to receive the Threaded Crimp Fitting. An allen wrench is used to turn the Tension Receiver to tighten a cable.

Threaded Crimp Fitting – VR302This part is crimped to the end of a cable so it can be terminated in a Tension Receiver or Inside Post Mount.

Fixed End Fitting – VR308This part is crimped to the end of a cable and used at the opposite end of a Tension Receiver in our Standard Fitting Bundle.

Stainless Steel Cable – VR100Our 5/32ʺ 316SS marine-grade stainless steel cable is suitable for residential and commercial applications. It is made from 7 bundles of 7 strands each. The multiple bundles makes it very flexible and easy to turn corners.

Wood Inside Post Mount – VR321These parts are used to mount cable to wood posts when mounting through the post is not desirable.

Cable Stop – VR312This part is crimped to the end of a cable to provide a free-spinning termination used at one end of the Dual Inside Post Mount. Two (2) included Delrin washers allow the parts to free-spin.

Insert Sleeve – VR330This part is a way to cover the hole wherever cable exits a post, creating a clean and elegant look. Insert sleeves are required for certain corner applications.

Stainless Steel Washer (VR340) and Oval Washer (VR342)Washers are recommended whenever a Fixed End Fitting or a Tension Receiver is used in a softwood or vinyl application. Oval washers are for use in an angled application.

Angle Washer – VR345Angle washers are recommended whenever a Fixed End Fitting or a Tension Receiver is used in an angled application.

Intermediate PostsThe Viewrail cable rail system offers intermediate posts as a solution for layouts that have more than 4 feet between posts. These posts can be spaced evenly between main posts to keep cable deflection to a minimum.

Installation Considerations

Wood posts should be installed no more than 4 feet apart to keep cable within the 4” sphere rule. Intermediate posts can be thin material. Anchor posts at the end of a run should be at least 3 ½” square.

Wood posts must be anchored securely to the deck. The tension of the cables produces extreme forces.

Holes in posts should be drilled a maximum of 3 ⅛” on center apart.

Handrail must be strong enough to not deflect under the forces of the cable

Vinyl wrapped and composite wrapped posts can be easily used with the dual inside post mount since all of the mounting is into the wood substructure. The standard mount requires shimming to be sure that the vinyl or composite does not compress or deflect when tightening the cable.

Code Compliance & Warranty

Code Compliance for 4ʺ Sphere

Meeting the 4ʺ sphere rule means that cables should be spaced on the standard spacing provided in the viewrail posts. The standard spacing is 3 ⅛ʺ O.C. which allows a reasonable amount of deflection of the cable when the posts are spaced no more than 4’ apart. When laying out a deck or balcony it is tempting to space posts farther than 4’ apart, however the deflection of the cable increases dramatically and it cannot be overcome with increased tension. Do not place posts more than 4’ apart and do not space cables more than 3 ⅛ʺ apart to conform to the 4ʺ sphere rule. Often posts are placed adjacent to each other for a dual corner. When placing two posts in a corner, be sure to place them no more than 4ʺ from each other.
