continued on page 9..... The Courier This is the season for giving and what better way to do that than to give to those who have made our communities great. The senior citizens of Wendell are in need of a place to gather for shared meals and activities. But, they want a place that is more than just a senior center, they want a community center. A group of volunteers has been working to find such a place within the City of Wen- dell and they have found a perfect building at 380 1st Avenue East, just across from city hall. In 2004, the United Presbyterian Church of Wendell changed its name to Living Water Presbyterian Church and moved over by the high school. The building they left behind was briefly used by Parke’s Mortuary, but is now empty. With recent upgrades, the only major renovation that is needed to make it ready for a Senior/Com- munity Center is the kitchen. This is a golden opportunity to create a place that can be used by the entire com- munity for senior citizen activities, wed- dings/anniversaries, graduation/quincea- ñera celebrations, workshops, and more. The current plan is to raise $150,000 in matching funds for grant money from the USDA. If you would like to give some- thing back to your community, please con- tact Lavern Silva at 208-536-6141. This is a 501c3 organization and all donations are tax deductible. Giving Back to Your Community So You Really Want To Be “Legal” As we get ready to be- gin a new year of political battles, there are three issue you should keep an eye on: Immigration, Healthcare, and Marriage. Immigration is big in the news right now because of the President’s executive action which may give de facto amnesty to millions of illegal immigrants. The Re- publicans (and a growing number of Democrats) are saying that the President’s action is a violation of the law, and they are vowing to fight it. The reality is that - given the chance - the Republicans would do the very same thing, only they want border control first to make sure the problem of illegal immigration doesn’t continue to get worse. So, what is the fight about? According to a number of political experts, it is all about getting more “Demo- crat” voters in certain ar- eas of the country. If true, this is a dangerous gamble because it assumes that these immigrants will vote Democrat. It also assumes - according to Democrat December 5th in Fairfield CHRISTMAS TREE LIGHTING and CHILI / SOUP CONTEST Gooding’s Annual Holiday Craft Show December 5th (10-6) December 6th (10-4) at the Gooding High School.
