A good Country Sales In Decline Mainstream news coverage and trade publication breakdowns over Nielsen SoundScan year-end music sales numbers have been all of the map. One news item had 2009 music purchases up 2.1%. Elsewhere, reports of a 10.7% all- genre album sales decline butted up against a 12.5% drop, depending on the inclusion or exclusion of a 53rd week. For country, that balance tipped between a 1.5% and 3.1% slip, resulting in greater market share for the format. But as far as we can tell, any way you slice it, it still comes up nuts. Overall revenue is down. Country revenue is down. And less is, well, less. Don’t just take our word for it. Country Aircheck reached out to top label sales execs for help sorting it all out. And so, here’s everything you need to know about the 2009 market for recorded country music, and where the positives are for 2010: “The 2.1% increase is purely spin,” says UMG/Nashville EVP/GM Ken Robold. “Notice it says music purchases are up, not music sales. We don’t know what country digital track sales are because they don’t break those out, and we’re hoping they’ll have a genre-based digital track chart sometime this year. But looking strictly at albums, we’re down 3.2%. Excluding the Hannah Montana soundtrack, we’re down 7%. It’s tough to be optimistic.” (continued on page 4) CHART NOTE; HOLIDAY SCHEDULE Chart Note: As you look at the Mediabase Country chart information in this week’s Country Aircheck, it’s important to note that Mediabase’s “chart week” for the Country Top 50 (Sunday, Jan. 3-Saturday, Jan. 9) was affected by a change in syndicated programming. Most notably, many of the nationally syndicated Country countdown shows aired 2009 retrospectives on Jan. 3 instead of the normal Top 30 or Top 40 countdowns. The loss of countdown show current-song airplay on more than 100 reporting stations affected the internal statistics of points, plays and audience on all the songs in the Top 40, resulting in an unusual number of songs without bullets. Please keep this in mind when doing your music this week. Holiday Schedule: Country Aircheck will be closed Monday, Jan. 18 in observance of the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday. All Country Aircheck/Mediabase monitored reporters can submit station adds any time from this Thursday (1/14) until 3pm ET/ Noon PT on Tuesday, Jan. 19. Country Aircheck non-monitored Activator reporters may submit their full reports any time during that same time frame. The Country Aircheck Weekly will be delivered Tuesday evening, Jan. 19. Syndication News CMT Radio Live with Cody Alan can now be heard on KWOF/Denver, WUSH/Norfolk, WLFV/Richmond, WOLF-FM/Syracuse and WKOT/Oglesby, IL.

Industry News Josh Gracin has signed with Buddy Lee Attractions for booking and Full Scope Entertainment for management. He has also joined the Average Joes Entertainment artist roster with a single expected this spring.

My tuNeS: MuSiC that Shaped My life KSON/San Diego PD John Marks discusses his most important songs, artists or concerts: 1. Eric Burdon, War, The Faces at Dayton, OH’s Hara Arena: My first concert ever, and my dad had to drive me. Rod Stewart was new to The Faces, and he pranced on the stage in a red velvet suit. Burdon closed. He played so long they cut off the sound and turned on the lights. They still wouldn’t leave the stage! It was a righteous show.

2. The Lovin’ Spoonful, Greatest Hits: The first album I ever bought. I loved their jug band/country sound. They, and others like Poco, New Riders of the Purple Sage, the Byrds and many more, turned me on to country music.3. George Strait, Strait Country: Back in 1981, I met some new artist named George Strait when he came to WSAI/Cincinnati and I interviewed him on the air. I still have that autographed album. Little did I know...4. Alabama’s 40 Number Ones in Concert, Las Vegas Hilton: A marathon concert where they performed every number one song in order. What an experience!5. Brad Paisley Who Needs Pictures: He came to visit at KWNR as a brand-new artist and we didn’t have a place to put him, so he sang to Brooks O’Brian and me in a bleak corner of the station. While I probably will never go to his house for Thanksgiving or babysit his kids, I consider Brad Paisley a dear and loyal friend. I love you, man!6. The Future Of Country Music: It is bright! Look at the talent our format is producing right now: Lady Antebellum, Taylor Swift, Love And Theft and so many more. The next five years belong to country.• A highly regarded song or album you’ve never heard: I’ll listen to anything once.•An“important”pieceofmusicyoujustdon’tget: Celine Dion. If I die and go to Hell, that’s what I’ll be consigned to listen to for all eternity.•Analbumyouplayedorlistenedtoincessantly: Tell ‘Em What Your Name Is by Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears. He takes me back to the classic soul/R&B of James Brown and Wilson Pickett, while not being retro. He simply kicks ass.• One obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now: “Love Train” by Bunny Sigler. I only recently found this version. It’s a bluesier, more stripped-down version of the O’Jays classic.

Samaritan provided a pair of goggles to protect his eyes. An Iraq war veteran has given Wayne his government-issue cold weather uniform. And strangers have put him up overnight in their homes to save him from sleeping in a frigid tent. He’s also been handed more hot cups of coffee than he can count. “It’s definitely an experience I’ll never forget,” Wayne tells us. “I’m eight days into it, and I’m not surprised. I’m just reminded of how great people are. You always hear about the bad stuff, and people can get real down on the world, like the world sucks. It doesn’t suck. If they think the world sucks, they should get out here and walk and be part of this and see the kindness of people. It [really] brings out the good.” Follow Wayne on his journey west, make a donation and watch today’s (1/11) broadcast from the road here. Country Sales (continued from page 1) Sony Nashville SVP/Sales & Operations Paul Barnabee agrees. “Total purchases can be misleading,” he says. “That’s just the number of things through the system. The overall business lost 50 million album sales this year. A couple of years ago we were gaining a couple hundred million track sales a year. This year, it’s 70 million. And they’re not one-for-one, so we are down even in equivalents. Losing 50 million albums is half a billion dollars in value. Beyond that, you have the margin effect of albums versus singles within each company. Country may not be down as much, but it’s still a decline.” Taylor Swift, of course, had the top selling album overall (3.2 million copies) and has sold more digital tracks (24.3 million)

50/50 cassette to CD. As late as the early 2000s we still had cassettes on P&Ls. “We’re not seeing track sales like in the pop world right now,” he says. “On the other hand, if the digital music companies want to grow their business they’re going to have to embrace country. We’re hitting the plateau for digital music. The explosion has happened. We have to hope we can sustain the physical business and, as retailers condense floor space, that we take up the digital side at faster rate. “If 50% of Country listeners don’t have internet access at home, especially if they live in places where they can’t get access, it may be a little slower. But if the cable companies want to grow their business, that’s an area they have to look at.” For labels, the task is to focus on what they can control. “It’s incumbent on us to put out great music,” Robold says. “Country is the last bastion of the CD business and people are still buying into artists they love, thankfully. There is still hope. “Every several years a big artist pops out of this format. Look at Taylor. Gretchen Wilson exploded a few years back. When they break, they break big. There’s still room for a lot of sales. All a label can do is get the best talent, bring it to market and let the revenue model take care of itself. And Country radio remains vital. I’m looking at a summary of the decade’s most played artists and eight of the 10 are country.” Rich points to a broadening fan base. “The market was down,

than any other artist. But that relative bright spot is the exception, not the rule. Big Machine VP/Sales & Marketing Kelly Rich admits that album launches aren’t what they used to be. “Once upon a time we wouldn’t dream of coming out with less than 100,000 units. Now we’re seeing 40,000 to 60,000. It’s getting harder and harder.” “The accounts are taking down their weeks of supply,” Barnabee says. “What they’re willing to carry has been tough to manage. We’re into single digit weeks of supply in some cases. They might stock three weeks on an artist knowing it’s thin and accept that they may miss some sales. They’d rather miss a sale than carry excess inventory. They’re not going to do that on the things that have momentum, but that middle group of artists is taking a hit.” Robold says there are no simple answers. “Broadband penetration, specifically in country, is an issue,” he says. “We’re seeing less and less retail space. But even internet sales of physical product – buying a CD from Amazon – is down 8%. And subscription models just aren’t taking hold yet. “Anderson (Wal-Mart), Target and Best Buy are the lion’s share of physical revenue, but it’s harder to get records into the circulars. Anderson is cutting space this year. It is kind of a perfect storm when you combine that with the lack of broadband penetration. That’s pretty scary.” The recent CMA market study found that 50% of country fans don’t have internet at home. Broadband availability in rural areas may prove to be another hurdle. Combined with shrinking retail space, country may get pinched from both sides. “Every week I break out the country tracks in the top 200,” Rich says. “Last week 29 of the top 200 tracks were country, and Taylor had seven of those. We’re going to have to force the issue. With the accounts cutting back on space it’s going to force the country consumer to convert quicker than they might have otherwise.” “We were the last genre to get out of the cassette configuration,” Barnabee says. “When I started here in 1995 I was doing [profit and loss statements] that were

but artists including Taylor and Carrie Underwood have brought significant attention to the genre and we’re getting listeners we haven’t had before,” she says. “The new acts coming up now and some of the current artists have the ability to garner a slew of new fans.” And as reaching those fans gets more difficult, labels are looking for creative solutions. “We have to figure out what the consumer wants and deal with the fact that it will continue to shrink,” Rich continues. “We have to find other ways and third party marketing is happening every day. We’ve got Taylor Swift product in Justice stores. That might not work for Justin

Moore, but Bass Pro Shops might. It’s up to us to figure out the consumer’s lifestyle and take music to them.” And that’s working, Barnabee says, even if the arrows aren’t pointed up. “Things are getting through the system,” he says. “We look at Chris Young, Kellie Pickler, Miranda Lambert, Lady A, Zac Brown Band and others and have reason to be optimistic. The value is definitely down. It’s a tough market but there is optimism with the right music getting through and the prospect of country fans still needing to make the conversion to digital.” CAC
