LEARNING TO SURVIVE ON AN ISLAND

When most people think of the UNESCO world heritage site of Halong Bay, thoughts tend to be along the lines of vacation, five-star meals on a cruise ship, and by no means having to learn to survive. For our Concordia Shanghai and Hanoi students who went on this year’s leadership survival interim, this was a whole new realm of what the average traveler to this ancient site would normally experience.

Led by Mr. Terry Umpenhour, a former United States Army Ranger and part of the Concordia Hanoi faculty next year, the students spent almost a week building rafts, sleeping on the beach, and learning all the survival skills to go with it, including first aid treatment and digging for clams on the beach.

Although exhausting, these adventure interim trips are extremely enjoyed by all and there are often repeat travelers who are looking to be challenged.

STUDENTS SHINE THROUGH MUSIC

COLORS OF SPRING + STUDENT SHOWCASE

An explosion of applause erupted as soon as the middle and high school choir finished their last number of Pharrell William’s “Happy.” The energy from the music and the Concordia community was absolutely pulsing and not just because of the break dance num-ber in the middle of the song but because there was a real feeling of pride for just how much talent was there on stage amongst our students.

The Concordia Elementary showcase was no different. While students were much younger and vocal chords are still being developed, students still had a chance to not only perform music but to also showcase the lyrics to

songs and music they had written themselves. The results included blues numbers, musical accompaniment to a children’s story book, dance interpretations, and poetry set to music. The evening even culminating with a newly written “Concordia School Song” which the students performed as they surrounded their parents in the audito-rium.

Both concerts were amazing displays of the Concordia music program run by Ms. Martha Seibel and Mrs. Nancy Durance. A huge thank you to both teachers for all their heart work and what can only be the result of their love and passion for music and our students.

At Concordia, we truly believe swimming is a life skill and every student should have the chance to become proficient in it. As part of the regular PE classes, students from preschool to high school had a chance to get their feet wet. Here are a few pictures to share what they got up to.
