TONIGHT

The Colorado Avalanche opens a two-game homestand against the San Jose Sharks tonight at Ball Arena ... These two teams will face off again here

on Thursday ... The Avs are 3-3-0 this year, 1-1-0 at home and 2-2-0 on the road.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR

•  Nathan MacKinnon needs one shot-on-goal to tie Joe Sakic's franchise record for consecutive regular-season games with a shot (227).

•  Samuel Girard is expected to appear in his 227th consecutive regular-season game tonight, passing Karlis Skrastins for the second-longest streak

   ever by an Avalanche defenseman.

•  Mikko Rantanen has a five-game goal streak, longest of his career and longest by an NHL player this season ... He shares the league lead with five

   goals.

•  Rantanen tonight is looking to become the first Avs player to score in six straight games since Nathan MacKinnon from Oct. 4-16, 2018 ... In fact,

since the franchise relocated to Denver, only four Colorado skaters have scored in six or more consecutive contests: MacKinnon, Milan Hejduk (seven

games), Joe Sakic (seven games twice, six games once) and Peter Forsberg (six games twice).

•  Gabriel Landeskog needs one goal to tie Peter Forsberg (202) for the third most goals all-time in an Avalanche sweater.

YOU HAD TO BE A BIG SHOT, DIDN'T YOU

With a shot-on-goal tonight, Nathan MacKinnon would tie the franchise record for consecutive regular-season games with a shot (227) set by Joe Sakic

from Nov. 17, 1995 to Jan. 12, 1999 ... MacKinnon's streak of 226, which began on Oct. 14, 2017 at Dallas, is the longest current run in the NHL ... He

has led the league in shots for each of the past two seasons.

DAY IN, DAY OUT

Samuel Girard is expected to appear in his 227th consecutive regular-season game tonight, passing Karlis Skrastins for the second-longest ironman

streak ever by an Avalanche defenseman.

285   Martin Skoula            Jan. 11, 2000 – April 4, 2003

226   Samuel Girard         Nov. 10, 2017 – present

226   Karlis Skrastins         Oct. 10, 2003 – Feb. 24, 2007

QUICK ON THE DRAW

The Avalanche ranks ninth in faceoff percentage at 52.9% ... The Avs have won the faceoff battle in five of their six games and were even in the other

(Jan. 15 vs. St. Louis) ... Individually, Pierre-Edouard Bellemare ranks third in the NHL at 65.4% (34/52) ... Nazem Kadri is 12th at 60.5% (46/76).

AVS &  SHARKS

Tonight is the first of eight meetings between the Avalanche and Sharks and the first of four at Ball Arena ... Colorado and San Jose are reuniting as

division foes this year, as they played in the Pacific Division together during the Avalanche's first three seasons from 1995-96 to 1997-98 ... The Avs won

both meetings last year with a third matchup cancelled ... Tonight is the 99th regular season meeting.

CONNECTIONS

Joonas Donksoi spent his first four NHL seasons with the Sharks (2015-19) ... Matt Nieto played three-and-a-half seasons with the Avalanche (2016-17

to 2019-20) ... Nicolas Meloche was drafted by Colorado (40th overall 2015) .... Bob Boughner finished his NHL career with the Avs (2004-06) ... Mike

Ricci spent parts of six seasons with the Nordiques/Avalanche (1992-98), winning a Stanley Cup in 1996 ... Avs video coach Brett Heimlich spent nine

years with San Jose.

POSITION OF POWER

The Avalanche's power-play unit was shut out for the first time this season on Sunday night in Anaheim ... The Avs still lead all teams with 10 power-play

tallies ... Colorado required the fewest games in franchise history to reach 10 power-play goals (five games), edging the previous mark of six achieved

by the Quebec Nordiques twice (1989-90 &1992-93) and Avalanche once (2009-10) ... The Avs matched a single-game franchise record with five power-

play goals on Jan. 15 vs. St. Louis ... It was the sixth time that Colorado/Quebec has scored five times with the man advantage but only the second time

since moving to Denver (Feb. 20, 2018 at Vancouver) ... Three of those five power-play goals came in the third period, tying the franchise record for a

single frame.

VIEW TO A KILL

The Avalanche's penalty kill unit is tied for eighth in the NHL at 86.4% and has not allowed a power-play goal on home ice (6-for-6).

FAMILIAR FACES

The 56-game schedule will consist entirely of divisional games, as the Avs will play fellow Honda West Division foes eight times apiece (four

home/away) ... This year marks the first time that the Avs will face an opponent eight times in a season since 2007-08, when they met each of their

Northwest Division foes eight times apiece ... Colorado also played its division rivals eight times each in 2005-06 and 2006-07 ... Prior to the franchise

relocating, the Quebec Nordiques played their Adams Division opponents eight times per season from 1981-82 to 1991-92 and met the expansion

Ottawa Senators nine times in 1992-93 ... The Avs have several stretches this season in which they play the same opponent four straight times.

TIP OF CAP

Gabriel Landeskog is in his 10th NHL season and ninth as team captain ... Landeskog was the youngest captain in NHL history when he assumed the

role at 19 years, 286 days on Sept. 4, 2012, a title he held for four years before Connor McDavid was given the “C” at 19 years, 266 days on Oct. 5,

2016 ... Landeskog is the second-longest serving captain in franchise history behind Joe Sakic (17 seasons overall, 16 consecutive) ... Only four

players have been captain of their current teams longer.

NIGHT SHIFT...Brent Burns (28:07) and Erik Karlsson (27:59) are currently first and second respectively in the league in average time on ice, and are

two of four players in the league with at least 27 minutes of ice time per game.

POWERFUL ADVANTAGE...The Sharks have scored six power-play goals thus far in 25 opportunities to start the season, good for a 24.0% conversion

rate. The Sharks have the sixth-most PPG in the league, and the team has converted at least once in four of their six games this season. Dating back to

last season, the Sharks have scored at least one PPG in nine of their last 11 games (12-40, 30.0%).

MODEL OF CONSISTENCY…Since being named the team’s general manager on May 13, 2003, Doug Wilson has strategically built the San Jose

Sharks into one of the NHL’s top franchises through strong drafting, shrewd trades and timely free agent signings. In his 15 seasons in charge of the

Sharks hockey department, Wilson has guided the team to its most successful era since the franchise’s inception, capturing a Presidents’ Trophy (2009),

five Pacific Division titles, advancing to the Western Conference Final on five occasions (2004, 2010, 2011, 2016, 2019) and appearing in the Stanley

Cup Final (2016). In his tenure as general manager, San Jose co-leads NHL clubs in Stanley Cup Playoff rounds (30), tied with only Pittsburgh, and no

other franchise has more wins than the Sharks (713):

BACK-TO-BACK...TO BACK...The Sharks will face teams in a back-to-back scenario 12 times this season, most among NHL teams (EDM &OTT both

have 11 as next highest). Last season under Head Coach Bob Boughner, the Sharks went 4-5-3 in back-to-back games (6 sets).

JOURNEYMAN...Patrick Marleau appeared in his 23rd NHL season, tied for seventh-most in NHL history. Zdeno Chara and Joe Thornton are the only

other active players with at least 23 NHL seasons under their belt. Across his NHL career, Marleau has skated in 1,729 NHL games, currently fifth most

in history. Marleau is only 38 games behind Gordie Howe (1,767) for the all-time record and can pass M. Messier (1,756), J. Jagr (1,733) and R. Francis

(1,731) in the process. Marleau is also only one of two players to score at least one game-winning goal against 30 of the 31 NHL clubs, having not

scored against VGK (Jeff Carter, all but DET).

WILD THINGS...San Jose added two players via trade in the offseason, acquiring G Devan Dubnyk and F Ryan Donato in two separate

trades. Donato tied for first on MIN in even-strength goals (14) last season, despite appearing in only 10:38 AVG TOI. His 1.40 G/60 led the Wild and

was fourth in points/60. Dubnyk over the last four seasons (2015-2020) is tied for third in games played among goaltenders (292) and ninth in wins

(150).

CLOSING TIME...Brent Burns scored his 40th career GWG on 1/24 @ MIN to become the eighth defenseman in NHL history to reach the mark. the
