AVALANCHE PRESEASON GAME NOTES Tuesday, September 24, 2013 Pepsi Center – Denver, Colorado

TONIGHT: The Colorado Avalanche (2-1) begins the second half of its 2013 preseason schedule at 7 p.m. (MT) tonight when it faces the Dallas Stars (2-0-2) in a Tuesday-night game at Pepsi Center…Tonight’s game will be the first of a home-and-home set this week with Dallas, as Colorado will play the Stars in Texas on Thursday night…Tonight’s game will be the 11th preseason meeting between the Avs and the Stars in the past six preseasons (see below)...The Avalanche is playing its fourth game in six days, as the club’s six exhibitions come in an 11-day span…Colorado enters tonight’s game on a two-game winning streak following its 4-3 win against Los Angeles on Friday night and its 2-1 road win against Anaheim on Sunday night…Dallas tonight is finishing off a stretch of three straight games on the road after starting its preseason with two home contests…The Stars fell in overtime 3-2 to St. Louis their last time on the ice…Tonight’s game can be heard on the Altitude Radio Network, with Marc Moser and Peter McNab calling the action. 2013 PRESEASON SCHEDULE (all times Mountain): Date Opponent Venue Time Result Wed., Sept. 18 ANAHEIM Pepsi Center 7 p.m. L (1-2) Fri., Sept. 20 LOS ANGELES Pepsi Center 7 p.m. W (4-3, OT) Sun., Sept. 22 at Anaheim Honda Center 6 p.m. W (2-1) Tues., Sept. 24 DALLAS Pepsi Center 7 p.m. -- Thurs., Sept. 26 at Dallas American Airlines Center 6:30 p.m. -- Fri., Sept. 28 Los Angeles (in Las Vegas) MGM Grand Garden Arena 8 p.m. -- AGAINST DALLAS: As is common in the NHL, Colorado and Dallas are familiar preseason foes…The clubs have faced each other 10 times in the past five preseasons (2007-2012), and Colorado leads 6-4 in the matchups…They have played twice each preseason since 2007-08 and will do so again this year, playing tonight in Denver and then again Thursday in Dallas…The Avalanche is 51-43-12-7 in 113 regular-season meetings with the Stars, going back to when both franchises went by different names—Quebec Nordiques (COL) and Minnesota North Stars (DAL)…Colorado has outscored Dallas 30-22 in the preseason since 2007. LAST TIME ON THE ICE: Semyon Varlamov made 37 saves Sunday night, and Brad Malone got the go-ahead goal with 11:33 left in the third period, leading Colorado to a 2-1 preseason victory over the Anaheim Ducks in Orange County…Guillaume Desbiens opened the scoring for Colorado at 12:20 of the second period with a 45-foot wrist shot past the Ducks’ Jonas Hiller…Anaheim’s Kyle Palmieri tied it 57 seconds into the third on a breakaway goal before Malone put the Avs up for good. VARLY’S GNARLY: Avalanche goalie Semyon Varlamov (sehm-YAWN var-LAW-mawv) stopped 37 of Anaheim’s 38 shots on goal Sunday night at Honda Center, leading Colorado to a 2-1 victory…Those 37 saves are more than he made in all but two games last year, and he’s stopped 37 or more shots on goal in a single game just 11 times since the 2009-10 season (141 games)…Colorado is 6-1-4 in regular-season contests when “Varly” makes 37 or more saves…Since 2009, his highest single-game saves effort came on Feb. 16, 2013, when he made 50 saves in a 6-4 loss at Edmonton. PAIR OF THREES: Matt Duchene (3a) and Ryan O’Reilly (2g/1a) scored three points apiece in Friday night’s home win vs. Los Angeles…Had the game been in the regular season it would have been the 12th career three-plus point game for Duchene and the fifth career effort for O’Reilly…Duchene scored at least three points in a game five times last season, including a four-point effort (1g/3a) March 8 against Chicago…O’Reilly’s most recent three-point night (3a) came Feb. 25, 2012 against Detroit.

ROSTER MOVES: The Avalanche on Monday announced another round of personnel trims when it reduced its preseason roster to 30 players, reassigning seven to Lake Erie and its American Hockey League camp…Andrew Agozzino (LW), Mitchell Heard (C), Bryan Lerg (LW), Garrett Meurs (C), Mark Olver (C), Colin Smith (C) and JT Wyman (RW) will all report to Lake Erie…Lerg, Olver and Wyman will require waivers…Goalie prospect Calvin Pickard was reassigned to Lake Erie on Sunday before Colorado’s road game with Anaheim…The Avalanche opened its training camp Sept. 8 with 58 players, including 31 forwards, 20 defensemen and seven goaltenders…27 players have been reassigned to their respective major junior teams or to Lake Erie and one player has been added through a waiver claim (see below)…Joey Hishon and David Van Der Gulik, who did not participate in training camp because of injury, will report to Lake Erie when cleared to play. CLICHE PLUCKED: The Avalanche announced Sunday it had claimed forward Marc-Andre Cliche off waivers from the Los Angeles Kings… Cliche, 26, has spent the last four seasons with Los Angeles’ American Hockey League affiliate, the Manchester Monarchs. The 6-foot, 202-pound center appeared in 57 games for Manchester in 2012-13, tallying 10 goals and 10 assists…A native of Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec, Cliche (pronounced KLEESH) was drafted by the New York Rangers in the second round (56th overall) of the 2005 Entry Draft…He appeared in one NHL game for the Kings in 2009-10. HELPING WITH FLOOD RELIEF: Kroenke Sports Charities, on behalf of the Avs, added on September 18, to the state of Colorado’s statewide flood-relief efforts with a $50,000 donation to The Salvation Army…The gift will provide relief services, including food, hydration, shelter and emotional support for thousands of evacuees and first responders dealing with the devastation…“The Salvation Army was chosen because of its initial relief services,” said Deb Dowling Canino, executive director of Kroenke Sports Charities. “Additionally, The Salvation Army will aide in long-term recovery, and all donated funds will remain in Colorado. Our thoughts and hopes are with our neighbors and friends.” BIGRAS SIGNS: The Avalanche announced Tuesday, Sept. 17, that the team had signed defenseman Chris Bigras to a three-year, entry-level contract…Bigras (BEE-gruh) was Colorado’s second-round pick (32nd overall) in the 2013 NHL Draft…He led all Owen Sound defensemen with 38 points (8g/30a) while adding a +35 plus/minus rating in 68 games during the 2012-13 Ontario Hockey League season…The 6-foot-1, 186-pound defenseman ranked second on the team in plus/minus, was third in assists (tied) and fifth in points…He was rated by NHL Central Scouting as the sixth-best North American defenseman in its final rankings for the 2013 draft. BURGUNDY/WHITE GAME: Team Burgundy defeated Team White 3-1 Sunday at Cadet Ice Arena at the Air Force Academy in the Avs' annual intrasquad scrimmage and final warm-up before preseason action…Despite the 3-1 score, the game was competitive with both teams trading chances for most of the three stanzas…Goals from Burgundy’s Colin Smith, Jamie McGinn and Brad Malone in a little more than six minutes late in the second period was the difference in the game…Team White, which outshot Burgundy 31-28 and 15-6 in the third period, finally found the back of the net with 59 seconds remaining with a goal from Bryan Lerg and with an extra attacker on the ice. LOOKING TO OCTOBER: The Avalanche will begin its 2013-14 season on Oct. 2 at home against Anaheim and will then host Nashville two nights later, on Oct. 4…An East Coast trip awaits in Week 2, with games scheduled against Toronto (Oct. 8), Boston (Oct. 10) and Washington (Oct. 12)…Six of Colorado’s 11 October games will be at Pepsi Center before a four-day break (Oct. 28-31) leads into November.

DALLAS STARS NOTES

THE TIMES, THEY ARE A-CHANGIN’…The Dallas Stars organization made several changes, both on and off the ice, during the offseason. The Stars will be donning new jerseys this season after introducing a new logo in June. Additionally, the team hired JIM NILL as its new General Manager and LINDY RUFF as the new head coach. The Stars also added several new faces to its roster, including TYLER SEGUIN, RICH PEVERLEY, SHAWN HORCOFF, SERGEI GONCHAR and DAN ELLIS. Below is a timeline of Dallas’ offseason changes: April 29 – JIM NILL is introduced as the team’s new General Manager June 4 – The Dallas Stars unveil a new logo and new jerseys June 7 – Dallas acquires the rights to defenseman SERGEI GONCHAR from the Ottawa Senators in exchange for a conditional sixth-round selection in the 2013 NHL Draft June 10 – The Stars sign GONCHAR to a two-year contract June 21 – LINDY RUFF is introduced as the new head coach of the Dallas Stars June 30 – The Dallas Stars select nine players in the 2013 NHL Draft, including forwards VALERI NICHUSHKIN and JASON DICKINSON in the first round July 4 – The Stars acquire forwards TYLER SEGUIN and RICH PEVERLEY, and defenseman RYAN BUTTON from the Boston Bruins in exchange for forwards Loui Eriksson, Reilly Smith and Matt Fraser and defenseman Joe Morrow July 4 – Dallas acquires forward SHAWN HORCOFF from the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for defenseman Philip Larsen and a seventh-round pick in the 2016 NHL Draft July 5 – The Stars sign goaltender DAN ELLIS July 24 – Dallas adds former Buffalo Sabres assistant JAMES PATRICK as an assistant coach NILL AT THE HELM…On April 29th, the Stars announced the hiring of JIM NILL as the team’s new General Manager. NILL had spent the past 19 seasons as a member of the Detroit Red Wings’ front office, serving as the club’s Assistant GM for the previous 15. During his tenure in Detroit, the club never missed the playoffs, earned four Stanley Cups, six Presidents’ Trophies and 12 Central Division titles. RUFF AND TUMBLE…On June 21st, the Dallas Stars introduced LINDY RUFF as the 22nd head coach in franchise history and the seventh in Dallas Stars history. The 53-year-old bench boss is the 12th-winningest head coach in NHL history, one of only 17 to ever reach the 500-victory plateau, and has the third-most wins of any active coach. RUFF joins the Stars after spending the first 15 seasons of his coaching career behind the bench of the Buffalo Sabres, where he departed as the club’s all-time leader in wins with a 571-432-162 record. BOSTON T. PARTY…Newly acquired Stars center TYLER SEGUIN joins the club after finishing the 2012-13 season tied for third on Boston with 32 points (16-16=32) in 48 regular season games. SEGUIN registered a +23 plus/minus rating last season, and ranks second

in the NHL with a +57 rating since the start of the 2011-12 campaign. The 21-year-old centerman leads his 2010 NHL Draft class in regular season games played (203) and ranks third in goals, assists and points (56-65=121). Entering his fourth season in the NHL, SEGUIN has appeared in two Stanley Cup Finals (2011, 2013) and won the Stanley Cup in 2011 with Boston. BORN ON THE 4TH OF JULY...Stars General Manager JIM NILL completed two trades on July 4 to bolster the club’s roster. The Stars acquired forwards TYLER SEGUIN and RICH PEVERLEY, and defenseman RYAN BUTTON from the Boston Bruins in exchange for forwards Loui Eriksson, Reilly Smith and Matt Fraser and defenseman Joe Morrow. Dallas also acquired center SHAWN HORCOFF from the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for defenseman Philip Larsen and a seventh-round pick in the 2016 NHL Draft. BENN AT WORK...Stars forward JAMIE BENN earned his 100th career assist on March 7, 2013, becoming both the youngest (23 years, 232 days) and the fastest (240 games played) player in Dallas Stars history to reach the 100-assist plateau. BENN, who led the Stars in 2012-13 with 33 points (12-21=33), enters his fifth NHL season just seven points shy of his 200th career point (82-111=193). Among members of the 2007 NHL Draft class, the 24-year-old ranks fifth in points (193), and is one of only two players in the top-10 who wasn’t drafted in the first round. THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS…The Dallas Stars finished third in the Traverse City Prospects Tournament, posting a final record of 3-1-0. Forward CURTIS MCKENZIE paced the team with four points (3G-1A=4P) in the tournament, including a hat trick in the opening game of the tournament. Forwards VALERI NUCHUSHKIN (3G), ALEX CHIASSON (2G-1A), BRETT RITCHIE (1G-2A) and RADEK FAKSA (1G-2A), and defenseman JAMIE OLEKSIAK (2G-1A) each shared second with three points over the four contests. CHIASSING AMY…Forward ALEX CHIASSON opened his NHL career scoring six goals in his first six games last season. CHIASSON, who made his NHL debut on April 3 at Anaheim, became the first player in Stars history to dent the net six times in his first six contests with the club, and is the first NHLer to notch six markers in his first six NHL games since Evgeni Malkin (7G) did so in the 2006-07 campaign. ELITE COMPANY…The Stars wrapped up the 2012-13 campaign with a 22-22-4 record, marking the 16th consecutive season the club has registered a .500-or-better record. Dallas is one of four teams in professional sports (NHL, NBA, MLB and NFL) with an active streak of 15-or-more straight seasons with a record of .500 or higher. Only the Detroit Red Wings (21) and New York Yankees (19) have more, while the San Antonio Spurs have matched Dallas’ 16.
