Area Chair’s Report

August 2017

Our last Area Committee Meeting (ACM) was held on July15th at the East Yolo Fellowship in West Sacramento. After hearing all the Area Committee Reports we had some open discus-sions, the first was the consideration of funding the Past Delegates when they are asked to serve our Area. The discussion will continue this month. Next there was some lengthy talks regarding the financial support of our Bridging The Gap (BTG) Chair to attend monthly meetings hosted by District BTG. This expense was not in the Spending Plan when presented last year. The discussion led to a motion to fund the chair for these travel expenses starting in Panel 68 at an estimated expense of $475.00. The motion will be discussed further at the August ACM.

At the August ACM, we expect to get our first look at the Area Spending Plan for 2018. Our Area Treasurer and the Finance Committee have put together this plan and need feedback from our groups in how we can best use our group contributions. Be sure to get a copy and have that important conversation with those that you represent.

Speaking of contributions... did you participate in the July 27th contribution of $7.27? While this was not a proposal or recommendation from our General Service Office (GSO), there was a lot of enthusiasm in support of this opportunity to contribute and bring awareness of the idea of self-support. If each member were to contribute $7.27 per year to GSO, we would be truly self supporting through our own contributions. If you missed the July 27 date you can still partici-pate, consider making that contribution today!

I look forward to attending the National AA Technology Workshop on September 8-10th. Online registration is available at www.naatw2017.org . In October, I will be at the Northern California Counsel Alcoholics Anonymous (NCCAA) Fall Conference in Lodi , October 13-15th and heading over to Hurst Ranch Jamestown, CA for a Traditions Workshop on Sunday October 15th.

Many of the Groups and Districts will be having their local elections prior to the Area Elections in November. The thought of this process reminded me of a paragraph in Concept IX of the Service Manual;

First let’s remember that the base for our service structure rests on the dedication and ability of several thousand General Service Representatives (G.S.R.’s), several hun-dred area Committee Members, and nearly a hundred Delegates. These are the direct agents of the A.A. groups; these are the indispensable linkage between our Fellowship and its world service; these are the primary representatives of A.A.’s group conscience. Without their support and activity we could not operate permanently at all.

It has been an honor and privilege to serve our Area.

Raiser. 2 speakers NCCAA- Shaun - Hi everyone! I would like to thank both areas for their continued support to NCCAA. Again I would like to remind everyone that my term will be up in San Ramon March 2018. Anyone that is interested in being the next NCCAA chair please bring your service resume to the steering committee at the conference. I would like to inform you that Woody our Interior Secre-tary stepped down last month. So I asked Mona Canady to step in to finish his term till March. I’ve appreciated the communication for the last three years that we have had between both areas and hope that it will continue in the future. As most of you know we have been celebrating our 70th Anniversary of the Northern California Council of Alcoholics Anonymous. We have asked AAWS/ GSO and Grapevine to participate in our three conferences this year. We started the 70th Anniver-sary with an Al-Anon speaker on Friday night at the 5:30 time slot and a Spanish speaker on Satur-day night at the 5:30 time slot which we hope will continue in the future. At the Sacramento Confer-ence in June, we had both area (06) and (07) Grapevine chairs put on workshops. We had Joann L. (06) Delegate as our Friday night speaker and Joel C. (Pacific Regional Trustee) was our Sunday morning speaker. In Lodi October 13-15th we will be having AAWS/GSO present. Greg T. (General Service office manager AAWS) will be our Sunday morning speaker. I’m waiting to hear back from him about putting a topic workshop together for the 9am Saturday morning General

Service time slot. I’ve talked with both Vikki and Joann about participating on that panel. I will keep you posted. I hope we can really talk about NCCAA to our groups, Intergroup, Central offic-es and Areas about this wonderful conference. We updated our history pamphlet from the mid 90’s to current. In Sacramento we finally we’re able to have our 70th commemorative history booklet available for sale. They are for sale at cost $3.00 apiece. There are some beautiful pictures from over the years. Also Peter our Archivist found another dinner ticket with Bill D. as the main speaker at one of our early conferences. What’s really a fascinating is that the ticket is numbered 3. The 2018 and 2019 calendar is filled with confer-ences. We have a new venue we’re going to try in Rocklin for June 2019. It’s a small venue to seat 700 maximum capacities. I was able to lock in San Ramon in October 2019 and June 2021 at our same cost of $6,500.00. As some of you know it went up to $34k two years ago. Anyone can put a bid package together to host a conference in their City. We currently have about 50% representation from all the counties in Northern California. If you’re interested in being a County Representative please come to the conference or steering commit-tee. We’re looking for new cities to host an NCCAA conference, so anyone is welcome to present a bid. You can go on our website at (norcalaa.org) and download the form. NCAC- Jon C. - The Northern California Accessi-bility Committee (NCAC) is an Alcoholics Anony-mous service committee dedicated to helping make Alcoholics Anonymous more accessible to all. Our new American Sign Language (ASL) Inter-preter Coordinator is arranging coverage for al-most all ASL interpreted meetings in the greater Sacramento Area even if no deaf members attend. Announcements are posted on the NorCal Deaf Recovery Facebook group. Our coordinator wants to create a one page website so anyone can access ASL meeting information anonymously. We ap-proved our committee guidelines at our last meet-ing on July 8th. One of our members found links to online intergroup including aa-intergroup.org. There is an online meetings directory on that web-site with online meetings from around the world. This could be helpful for members with internet access that cannot make it to in-person meetings due to accessibility issues. The representative from the Central California Fellowship (CCF), the inter-group in the greater Sacramento area, was directed to the 5th Dimension Online Young People’s Group by the Sacramento Young People in AA (SACYPAA) liaison to CCF. They meet on Wednesdays at 9:30pm and Saturday at 2pm, both Eastern Time. This group can be found at the Online Intergroup of AA website. We will attend the Lodi Northern California Council of AA con-ference on Saturday October 14th. We will have a table with information. One of our members has compiled a spreadsheet of meetings in the CCF

that are wheelchair accessible. While there are over 600 meetings in the schedule, there are actually only just over 160 locations that host meetings. We plan to see which ones are accessible and reach out to the groups that are not accessible to discuss what can be done. A member of the CCF was moved by a talk by our deaf member at the Sacra-mento NCCAA on the All Services Panel. The CCF member sees deaf members as being “imprisoned.” She thought the Hospitals and Institutions Committee might be able to give some of their excess money to fund ASL interpretation in AA meetings. She went to the H&I General Meeting and the H&I Chairperson said to her, “show me how.” Our committee will work on a way that H&I could support NCAC with funds. We may try to start meeting in a small meeting room in a Taco Bell close to where we currently meet. We would first need to publicize within AA the change in location.

District Reports D09 Cindy W. DCM- It is a pleasure to finally be here at Area 07 and to present the District 09 re-port. It is my intention to be in attendance at the rest of the Panel 66 Area meetings. District 09 held its monthly business meeting on July 9, 2017 in Yreka. Nine committee members, a liaison from the Sobriety in the Siskiyous and our Intergroup representative were in attendance. Our district added one new group over the past two months. We currently have 32 meetings in our District. We are holding our Annual District picnic on August 19th and the 3rd Annual Sobriety in the Siskiyous is scheduled September 9th. Our meeting schedule and website remain up to date. All District positions with the exception of the Recording Secretary and Alternate PI/CPC Chair are filled. With an excess of District funds due to the limited travels of the DCM, our District contributed $1,000 to service entities last month, including a $300 contribution to Area 07. D11 – Larry W, DCM -The fire was lit at the Post-Conference for BTG. We had a rep, but was busy with other things as well. At that assembly, 4 GSRs attended the specific Roundtable. But talking to one of their groups later lit a bigger fire under a new GSR (of another group), and he was elected Chair. The binder was turned in last month, and it was woefully out of date. Our newbie has some work to do. Oddly, while referrals are slack at times, on the day of the meeting, our old (as in Ken … and Roy … had her email) rep rcvd 2 referrals; forwarded to me to forward to the new-bie. Planning continues for the Concepts Workshop. It was decided to NOT necessarily have it on a Dis-trict Weekend. Date, October 8, is set for our

Delegate visit the Red Bluff area (versus Redding as in the past), location TBD ‘between two loca-tions. D15 Eloy M. DCM- On Monday June 26th District 15 held its monthly meeting with 20 mem-bers present, 12 GSR's and 2 alternate GSR. Intro-ductions and group reports were presented. The Mom's group is meeting in the park until a new location can be confirmed. We had one birthday, Fred with 11 years of sobriety. Registrar Rita has a few updates from group forms. Be sure to keep your group information valid. The committee approved an independent review of the financial status of the district for the fiscal year which ended on June 30th 2017. Report will be presented at the July district meeting. The treasurer will draft a letter to groups as a thank you for your contribution to district. District 15 will host the Area BTG meeting in July at 1600 Mangrove St. Intergroup report by Martha, she reminded every-one of the Lake Almanor Campout in August. Elections were held for the Alternate DCM posi-tion and Colleen E. will finish the panel through 2017. Committee agreed to have an election for the Web chair position at the July district meeting. Draft district by-laws were distributed and a com-mittee will be formed to review them before re-enacting them. District 15 hosted Vikki, our CNIA 07 Delegate with lunch at the Olive Garden followed by her report on July 8th from 2:00-4:00pm, great sup-port and a big thank you for her service. As always event flyer's can be found on our web site calendar aabutte-glenn.org. D17 – Annie R, DCM - D19 – Roy G, DCM- District 19 met on 1 July 2017, at the Hub-Alano 518 12th St. Marysville We have a new Grapevine rep Bill B. from Sobrie-ty First group, he’ll be getting to groups to share the GV literature available. Tentative date for Uni-ty day is set for 14 Oct at Harmon Grove Park Yuba City 329 has elected new trusted servants and I look forward to working with them. Key-stone group celebrates 11 yrs of service in District 19, Linda-Olivehurst group celebrates 57 years of service in District 19 D20 – Kail R, DCM – District meeting is next week. Have new District By-Laws. Vote next month. D21 – Bob F, DCM - Our business meeting was held Tuesday June 27th with about 25 in attend-ance. Meeting highlights include: Our Delegate Vikki R. shared her experience, strength, and hope from this past April’s General Service Conference in Rye, NY. Our next planning meeting for the

2018 Winter Assembly, to be hosted by District 21 at the Roseville Fairgrounds, is scheduled for Sat-urday July 29th at the Auburn Fellowship. The District is moving forward with disbanding its existing teleservice function and adopting the ser-vice currently provided by Central California Fel-lowship (CCF). Auburn Unity Day, held on Saturday June 17th, was a resounding success with a host of speakers, panelists, and terrific food. D22 – Cindy A DCM- Greetings, District 22 met last Wed., 6/12 at 6:15pm for Concepts 8 and at 7pm for our regular meeting. We are still in the process of electing a Treasurer to serve until Janu-ary’s new Panel. We are doing well financially; and hopefully will have the newly elected, Curtis D., up to speed on the books next week. The same GSR and his wife and Alt-GSR, Curtis and Lyle D, hosted Vikki’s Delegate Report in their home June 25th and we thank them. It was a great afternoon, with many flavors of ice cream, and thank you Vikki for attending and giving a wonderful report. Our meeting was smaller this month, but the GSRs that were there reported that their groups are doing well and more than one reported a bunch of brand new people showing up and hang-ing around. And so we are grateful. D23 – Deanna C, DCM –Canceled Unity Day Picnic this year due to park under water. We con-tinue to thrive. We continue our efforts to educate our members and groups about the difference between safety and annoying. D24 – Kendyce M. In July we are having a speaker from Nor Cal Accessibilities Committee. Hoping to have a presentation on PI/CPC in August. I may be ask-ing people here to come and speak to GSRs as we end the panel. D40 Sarah C- D41 – Keith S. DCM- District 41 held its business meeting this last Wednesday night at the Alano Club in Fresno with 7 in attendance (The Magnifi-cent Seven, if you will). District finances are in the black and if our luck holds out we will be consider-ing a split in the very near future. I would like to thank Jenn for the weekend she spent in Fresno last month starting with her speak-ing for the Outside Group at the Alano Club. I considered it a great honor to get to know her better. Then, the next day she gave much needed guidance to our fledgling 2018 Post Conference Assembly Committee. Followed by a truly out-standing GSR school that had a few future District 41 GSR’s in attendance as well as a few curious members at large who were, by all accounts, much impressed. District 41’s active groups are by and large, doing well and are in keeping with Alcoholics Anony-mous three legacies of Unity, Service and Recovery at the forefront of their daily endeavors. The new monthly Concepts meeting is gathering interest and gaining support. At out last meeting we had District 41’s DCM Emeritus Dave D. as chair and we welcomed a visitor from Oregon, Bill W. (no, not THAT Bill W.) who is a GSR for his group. We had a most interesting discussion on Assemblies and the workings of our respective Area’s. As well as Concept VII. Finally, yea! Planning is coming along nicely for District 41’s 2nd Annual Unity Day Picnic “Soberama!” It very well could be our theme will be… Drum Roll please… UNITY ! We also Discussed having an Out of Town Speaker for the Picnic (Tom, check your calendar for September 16th. hint, hint.) For food we expect the usual hot dogs & hamburgers, but, in addition, we are planning to have a Chili Cook-Off ! With the speaker as judge. The venue is still up in the air, but we will have one, of that, I am sure. D42 – Darrel D, DCM – Our District meeting was held on the 2nd Monday of the month at North park Fellowship. Our District finances are good and we are waiting to make splits until we have made the deposit on the venue for the 2018 Post Conference Assembly. Groups report financ-es are good and most held elections for trusted Servants. Jenn D. facilitated the kickoff meeting for next year’s Post Conference Assembly and gave a GSR school at North park Fellowship. Intergroup-No report. PI/CPC-Participation is excellent and they are attending numerous events. 2018 Post Conference Assembly-We had the Kickoff meeting with Jenn. We have no venue yet. We have several committees formed. We’re very excited. D43 – Hurley T, DCM- District 43 usually hold

Appointed Chair Reports Accents– Brad E. – This month I gained an appreciation for Tom for the monthly reports he submits. I have new understanding of what it takes prepare and get a report in on time! Archives – Jeff P- BTG- Ken M – Good morning to all and thank you for letting me be of service. We (BTG) had our first teleconference call Wed evening and eve-ryone thought it went great. There were 10 of us on the call and for being our very 1st one and me being REALLY nervous about it, I thought it went very well. We did have more in attendance than we normally do in the district meetings so that is a good sign. This report is for last month also seeing as how I managed to miss it last month so my apologizes for that. The Area BTG work-shop is being moved to the end of Sept due to lack of time to get the flyers out. I am planning on attending the BTGWW in Sept. Contact Requests Received & Sent out – 27 Contact Made – 3 Pending Contacts (future contacts that will be made after this report) -- 7 Requests sent out of our Area – 2 NEW Google Voice Phone number 916-572-7067 for BTG For Roy: Approx. mileages for panel 68; Redding- 94 Sacramento- 95 Madera- 242 Sonora workshop- 189 E-Services- Cindy- The eServices Committee held our monthly conference call last Sunday 7/9 at 7pm. We worked on a budget amount for next year’s eservices committee. We also talked about how important we feel the “Pass It On” is, and we are starting to inventory the hardware and its condi-tion. I hope you will work with us, if you have an Area laptop and we want to play with it before the end of the panel. We would like to make sure we pass over fully running, well documented systems wherever possible. As far as NAATW, Sept 8-10, in Sacramento - with the eServices Committee advice we have an initial Agenda that is very excit-

ing. I appreciate their brainstorming on topics. Finance – Herminia V- The Finance Committee did not meet this morning like we usually do at 8:45 a.m. as the Committee had previous commit-ments. We scheduled a Conference call on July 11, 2017 to discuss CNIA Proposed Spending Plan for 2018. Thank you Celia for your service, you are awesome. Once again just a small reminder of the 7th Tradition: The paradox of AA is that financial independence and the support of our fellowship by alcoholics and alcoholics alone not only en-hances AA’s importance to each of us, but stimu-lates our engagement in our own recovery…AA is our thing from our groups treasury to the balance sheets in General Services Office. Grapevine/La Vina. Judy Greetings from the Grapevine/La Vina! I have the honor and privi-lege of serving as the CNIA 07 Grapevine/La Vina Chair. I am having a great time! nearby. Rosemary translated it for those who don/t speak Spanish. I also went to the D15 Conference report. Working on spending plan for 2018—the finance committee met by conference call this week and came up with a draft plan that we will present in August. Remind you of the 7/27 contributions: the idea is to send a $7.27 contribution to GSO on July 27th. Based on last year’s expenses for group services (which is separate from literature), the expense per member is $7.27 per year. This means that if each member sent in that amount we would be fully self-supporting. This is a plan that one of the dele-gates at the GSC came up with, and other dele-gates are talking about it with their areas. It is not GSO’s idea. You can make contributions online at aa.org. There’s a button in the top center that says “make a contribution”. You can also mail it in. Alternate Chair- Jenn D- Been Busy! Grateful to 41 &42 working on upcoming assembly. Area Appointed Chair Position Descriptions

CNIA Area 07 Verbal Translation Chair Panel 66 My name is Rose Mary Contreras; my sobriety date is 04/14/1977 I have been participating in the Area 07 translation committee in one form or another since 2003 I prefer verbal translation. For me it’s an opportunity to carry the message and unify our Area it’s very satisfying to know that others will have the opportunity to participate in General Service because of this service This is an acquired skill helps to be bi-lingual but not necessary. I no longer need very much time to practice/ prepare however since in AA we use a lot of alphabets or acronyms it becomes quite confusing Time spent is mainly @ Area Assemblies, ACM’s, Spanish interdistsrict meetings, Spanish Foros, and Delegate reports to Linguistic dis-tricts. Thank you for the opportunity to serve, Rose Mary

Grapevine/La Vina Chair As the Panel 66 CNIA Appointed Grapevine/La Vina Chair, my journey has been one of spiritual growth, a deeper love for Alcoholics Anonymous, and a new respect for General Service. I have loved meeting more members and sharing more of what is available in our program. There are many responsibilities for this position. I believe that the most important function of this position is to educate members about Grapevine/La Vina as well as promote subscriptions. Other responsibilities are to keep an inventory of all the Grapevine/La Vina literature, keep track of the money of sold literature, make deposits into the CNIA area account, order books and other necessary display needs, include sales tax in cost of books, and keep a record of sales. Another responsibility is encouraging Groups and/or Dis-tricts to appoint or elect Grapevine Representatives (GVR) or La Vina Representatives (LVR). I love attending various Central Northern California Area and District events. I have traveled to Assemblies, Unity Days, Group Anni-versary Celebrations, Conferences, and Workshops. I have given Grapevine/La Vina presentations and led Grapevine Writing Work-shops. I have the opportunity of serving as a liaison for getting subscriptions for those incarcerated. This is not a necessary responsibil-ity of this position, yet a very important role of program encouragement. It helps to have a place to store the literature and supplies. Packing my car with the literature is a major requirement. I fill my entire car with all literature and items needed for each specific occa-sion or event. Most events occur on the weekends. I have had months when every weekend is packed with scheduled events and then some with only an event or two. Traveling is part of this position. I love traveling! I have traveled within Central California as far north as Redding and down south to Tulare County. I believe the Grapevine and La Vina display has a lot of impact on teaching what is available. There are many members who don’t know Grapevine puts out a monthly magazine or that La Vina puts out a bi-monthly magazine. AA members are amazed and delighted by the variety of literature that is published. Teaching people has been the most rewarding and I love generating excitement. The Grapevine/La Vina Chair is the best position in the area! I am having a blast! Off I go in my packed car—with Grapevine and La Vina books, display board, table and cover and display racks. With all these tools, I am able to continue Bill W’s and Dr. Bob’s original pur-pose of carrying the message thru the Grapevine to A.A. members. This has been a rewarding experience and has enhanced my sobriety immensely. In Love and Service, Judy B.

CNIA Area 07 Literature Chair Hi everyone, I'm having a blast. I was really jazzed when Tom picked me to join his team, and it just keeps getting better. working with a great group of people whose dedication and enthusiasm are unmatched has been immensely rewarding. Getting to events and assemblies early and helping put them together; watching them unfold and happen; then packing up and saying goodbye is like going to a concert--only better. I’m a part of it. Filling special orders and maintaining the literature inventory has put me in touch with suppliers from Fresno to New York City. Seeing the smiles on faces of people getting their orders filled or finding something special is really cool. Sure, it's a commitment and a responsibility. My friends are expecting me to show up and taking care of business. I have to keep track of the event sales and depositing the cash after, then sending the info to our treasurer. Expense reports for re-imbursement and month-ly reports for the Accents are also part of the gig. Like all service positions in AA, the rewards are tenfold the amount of energy and love I've put into them, and Literature is at the top of my experience. Thanks Tom, for choosing me, even though my main qualification was having a pick-up to haul all the books and stuff around. Thanks too, to all the rest of the team for all your help getting up to speed in mid-panel. It has been, and remains, a pleasure. Bill L. Literature Chair

G.S.R. Preamble

We are the General Service Representatives. We are the link in

the chain of communication for our groups with the General

Service Conference and the world of A.A.

We realize that the ultimate authority in A.A. is a loving God

as He may express Himself in our group conscience. As trusted

servants, our job is to bring information to our groups in order

that the group can reach an informed group conscience. Pass-

ing along this group conscience we are helping to maintain the

unity and strength so vital to our fellowship.

Let us, therefore, have the patience and tolerance to listen

while others share, the courage to speak up when we have

something to share, and the wisdom to do what is right for our

groups and A.A. as a whole.
