What is an E-portfolio?E-portfolios like virtual learning environments, arebecomingacorepartofsupportingthedeliveryofteachingandlearning.UndertheHarnessingTechnologystrategy,schoolsareencouragedtoprovidelearnerswithapersonalonlinespace.Theycan take this with them as they move on throughlearningstagesintheirlifelonglearningprocess.

Anelectronicportfoliocanbedescribedasanonlinecollection of reflections and digital resources (suchas documents, images, blogs, CV’s, multimedia).StudentscanuseanE-portfoliotodemonstratetheirlearning,skillsanddevelopmentovertimetoselectedaudiences.

AspartofasolutiontosupportschoolsinmeetingtherequirementsoftheHarnessingTechnology/NextGenerationStrategy2008-2014,CLEOareprovidingsecondarypupilswithaccesstoane-portfolioincludingasecureonlinestoragespace.

Mahara is an open source e-portfolio system,whichwasinitiallystartedinNewZealandandisnowusedasanationwideE-portfolioforschoolsacrossNewZealand.Maharaprovidesasafeonlineenvironmentforstudentstodemonstratetheir learning, skills anddevelopmentand recordtheirachievementsovertimetoaselectedaudience.Duringtheirstudies,studentswillcreatehugequantitiesofmaterials:assignments,forumposts,quizattempts,presentations,papers,reflectivejournalsandblogentries.Capturing,managingandstoring these isat theheartofMahara.
