SIMILES (NOT SMILES)

A simile is a comparison that says two things are alike using the words .

As quick as a bee sting

Reeked like a sewer on a hot day

The word simile looks like the word similar, so a simile states two things are

similar.

“like” or “as”

METAPHORS

A metaphor is a comparison that says two things are alike without using the words “like or as”. Instead of saying one thing is like another, it says one thing is another.

Her hair was a cascading water fall

The pageant was the sun of her life which everything else revolved around.

TELL ME MORE

Both similes and metaphors help describe things in a story. A point can be made more clear if it is compared to something.

Quills as prickly as a cactus

You know how a cactus feels so you have an idea of how prickly the quills are that the author is describing.

MOODY METAPHORS AND SIMILES

Metaphors and similes can create mood too. They can make you feel happy, sad, angry, ect.

As gloomy as a cloud just about to rain

This simile creates a sad mood. Before it rains clouds have a dark grey color and you can’t enjoy the outdoors as much.

DIY

Now it’s your turn. Hunt for some similes and metaphors, the mood they create, and how they create mood in these songs.

HYPER HYPERBOLES

A hyperbole is a statement that is so exaggerated it is impossible.

The perfume was so strong I needed a gas mask.

Hyperbole uses the prefix hyper which means “over”,so it means over exaggerated.

Think of a hyper person. They are over excited.

WHAT THEY DO

Hyperboles make the text more interesting. It is more exciting to read, “He is older than

the hills”, than “The man is very old.”

They make a point very clear.“These books weigh a ton!”Since you know a ton is very heavy, there is no

misunderstanding how heavy the books are.

TO THE POINT

Now write down the point these hyperboles are trying to make.“Bill Gates has enough money to feed an entire continent.”

“I'll go insane if I don't get to the meeting on time.”

“Here once the embattled farmers stood,And fired the shot heard round the world.”

“It took a whole week just to walk around the ancient castle.”
