Saturday 15th February, 7pm - An Evening of Youthful Praise

This will be an evening worthy of our support, for the Young People of Boscombe will share with our own Young People and

Jared Littlewood (Vocal) to provide a feast of music and song.

It will be a happy, bright event to clear away the winter blues and, at the same time, raise much needed funds to send our Young Peo-ple to Summer Camps, which helps them so much in their spiritual growth. An evening not to be missed!

Saturday 5th April - Band Weekend

We are privileged to have Dr. Stephen Cobb, Territorial Music Director, as our principal guest and leader for the band’s

131st Anniversary; Stephen is also Bandmaster of the International Staff Band.

Other guests will be Songster Leader Lyndon Bexon (Vocal) from Winton and Bandsman Callum White (Xylophone/Percussion) from Birmingham Citadel.

Dear Readers,

Good News, Bad News

In our fi rst appointment out of Training College, Lynne and I were introduced to a very simple way to get children to pray.

Towards the end of JAM Club (Jesus and Me), our YPSM would sit the chil-dren down and place a chair in front of them. This was the ‘Good News, Bad News Chair’. The children were then invited to come and sit on the chair to share any of their news with the group - good or bad.

Once all the news had been shared, we would pray for all that had been spoken about, thanking God for all He had done and asking for His help in those areas which were proving diffi cult.

Not only was it an excellent way for us all to get to know each other and become more involved in each other’s lives, but it helped to teach the children to pray in all circumstances.

At this time, Gen was still a newborn, but as she grew and was joined by her brothers, we introduced a similar idea to bedtime prayers. We would all pick out something good and something not so good that stood out for us that day and then, quite simply, thank God for the day.

Prayer doesn’t have to be complicated. Even the simplest prayer can help us to fi nd the proper perspective on whatever is going on in our lives.

Philippians 4:6-7 MSG “Don’t fret or worry. Instead of worrying, pray. Let petitions and praises shape your worries into prayers, letting God know your concerns. Before you know it, a sense of God’s wholeness, everything coming together for good, will come and settle you down. It’s wonderful what happens when Christ displaces worry at the centre of your life.”D.S.

guests at the Mill Rythe Holiday park, Hayling Island Portsmouth with carols and Christmas music. The programme was well received with the guests joining in with enthusiastic carol singing. Carols at The Kings

The Corps 22nd Annual ‘CAROLS AT THE KING’S’ took place at the local King’s Theatre to a packed house of over 1,200 people.

Divisional Envoy Russell Rook (London South East) was the compère who gave the challenge ‘do we receive at Christmas what we want or what we need? Jesus is what we need’.

There were contributions of Torches, Torches Run With Torches and Star Light Star Bright by St. John’s College Junior School Choir (Southsea), the Nativity by Portsmouth High School Nursery, and new for this year, over 30 children from the new Corps Nursery, ‘Noah’s Ark’ who presented Little Angel. Also taking part were the Corps Children’s choir who sang When Children Rule The World and When You Don’t Know The Way. The Y.P. Band played Christmas Medley and the Corps Timbrellists played to Christmas Praise accompanied by the Senior Band who also contributed Joyful, Joyful and The Christmas Miracle. The Songsters sang Candlelight Carol and I want to go to Bethlehem.

A feature ‘Around the World’ of 3 songs included Christmas Fanfare, Come and Join The Celebration and Joy to the World with one verse sang in native tongue and in national dress by the Corps Burmese group.

In the freewill offering £1873 was raised for the Children’s Hospice, Naomi House (Winchester) for whom a monster cheque was presented by`Father Christmas’. The evening concluded with the Finale (picture) with What Child Is This, Bow the Knee and Ukrainian Bell Carol. (picture by D.S.) T.M.

‘Euph Fellowship’

Christmas Café Church enjoyed a unique compilation of music by THE FOUR EUPHONIUMS, (left to right in picture: John Hanchett, B/M

Portsmouth Citadel; Gary Rose, Kettering; Dean Jones, Lower Early and Darren Shaw, Southsea Citadel.

The quartet commenced with Carol Of The Bells, Joy to the World (in Barbershop style) and In the Bleak Midwinter. As the quartet played, the hall was filled with beautiful and melodious harmonies which were a pleasure to every listener.

The March Christmas Joy was a distinct favourite as was God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen (Arr. Darren Shaw) played in 14 variations of style including Tango, Mozart, Waltz/Oompah, and Salvation Army March. The Magic Euphonium and Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree expounded the technical delights of the quartet, and everything that took place was to the Glory of God through the gifts he has bestowed.

Darren Shaw’s Bible message was centred on Isaiah’s prophesy of Immanuel (God with us) as he demonstrated using the quartet to play the carol tune of Away In A Manger. Darren reminded us that as the music moves us on through the melody, we should each move on with God in our lives. The Euphoniums played the devotional tune of O love that will not let me go, to end the reflective period, after which the evening concluded with the ‘Big Finish’ King Of Glory (Arr: Darren Shaw) T.M.

Carolling

Financial News

Southsea Citadel Band, in it’s busy carolling programme, is pictured at the local Southsea shopping precinct on a December Saturday amongst

the Christmas shoppers. Whilst the band played, many shoppers tarried to listen and expressed pleasure to see and hear the Salvation Army Band in its traditional setting. T.M.

• Carols at the Kings, collection for Naomi House: £1873.06• Money Tree Appeal for Catherine Booth House: £192.12 • Christmas Carolling, Palmerston Rd Precinct: £4204 (one session cancelled

due to storms/rain. Not including numerous ‘one off’ invitations, when generous fi nancial support was given.)

• Donations for Christmas programme, various sources: £1260Sincere thanks to all those who participated, supported and prayed... we reached many people with the Christmas message in so many different places. We give God all the glory and thank Him for His constant presence.

Good & Bad News:Good: The Corps account has been credited with £21,379.23 by THQ which is due to the diligence and expertise of the Corps Treasurer, Richard Bishop. This money is made up of £10,613.08 Gift Aid and £10,766.23 VAT refund on the building works on the new café a few years ago. We are grateful to the efforts of Richard particularly as the Corps was getting close to not balancing the books!!Bad: As many of you are aware Richard has relinquished the position of CT which leaves a huge gap. Unless someone is found to take this position, the Corps are likely to miss out on fi nancial opportunities like this in the future. MW

Special thanks are given to Bransbury Park Butch-ers, Milton, who donated the meat and to Ports-mouth Fruit and Flowers, Milton, who donated the vegetables.

Thanks are also given for the many other individ-ual donations of money and goods plus 140 home-made mince pies.

Kaytie’s New AlbumThe Salvation Army has over

the years developed a unique style in music which has been written by men and women who want to share their joy and spiritual experience.

Of course, as the years progressed, styles and harmonies were developed, honed and enhanced and we have a wonderful heritage of Army music that I want to help to preserve and honour

Sometimes when the opportunity arose in the church to give our testimony, I wanted to do it but my stomach got butterflies and I got nervous. So I thought I would take the opportunity of doing it this way.

I wasn’t brought up in a Christian home, but when I was old enough, Mum would send me and two of my sisters to church. I hated it!! It was High Church of England where they would swing the incense. I didn’t know when to stand up or sit down. A lot of the time we would stand just inside the door and take in what the minister was saying so when Mum asked we were able to tell her. As soon as the collection plate came round to us, we were long gone and would spend the collection on sweets.

Mum was the one who was the disciplinarian in our house. She had rules and, if we dared to disobey, she would say we would get a good hiding - there is no such thing as a good hiding! But if Mum said it was good, then it must have been so.

She would tell us that we had to be good and believe me I did try - mostly so I should get a present from Santa but, no matter how good I thought I was, or how many letters I wrote to him, I didn’t get a thing! Never in all my childhood did I receive a Christmas present. Oh how I longed for a little doll and, seeing as Santa always forgot, I asked my Mum to buy me one. Her reply was I could have it when Nelson got his eye back. I was so confused-dot-com - it wasn’t until I learned about the Battle of Trafalgar that I understood what she meant. Still to this day what it had to do with me not getting that doll, I will never know.

My dad was a fisherman and very often stayed out fishing for a whole week. Come the weekend when he came ashore he could never find his way past the pub and would come home three sheets to the wind. Poor Mum. Now it was her turn to get a good hiding! Dad would beat Mum something awful. We kids dreaded weekends and, on top of all the violence, the babies were coming (there were eleven of us altogether.) I was more than angry with them and they weren’t Catholic either.

One day a tourist ship brought some Nuns. There were about 30 of them. Mum said they were good people and I wanted to be one of them. They went sailing up the street. I didn’t see any feet; I thought they were on castors, bless them.

In 1957, a young minister and his wife came to the Island for the Baptist Church and he could preach fire and brimstone. Lots of people got converted, including my Mum and I. We were both baptised and that was the first time I really knew

My Testimony - Shirley Woodley

God. Soon after, I taught Sunday School and did two youth clubs on a Tuesday and a Thursday. I did this for nine years and enjoyed it.

In 1966 I came here to England to work in domestic service. The people I worked for were lovely and treated me well. There was another lady working there and she was also a Christian. She took me to her Church which was Baptist. I felt the Lord leading me and I was in a good place where I could still worship.

In 1967 I met the man who, four years later, became my husband. Tony was di-vorced. My Mum was angry with me as she didn’t believe in divorce. I also knew it was wrong, but I did it anyway. He was such a good husband and father, but I thought God would never forgive me and so I drifted away. In 2008 I got very ill and I asked God to forgive me - and He did.

This last fi ve years I have got to know God like I have never known Him before. Believe it or not, but the truth remains the truth. I think about God last thing at night and fi rst thing when I awake. Before I get out of bed I pray to my loving Father and ask that, if the day is mine, help me to be obedient to Him. I some-times say to Satan, ‘You will have to get along without me today’. He never leaves me alone, but my God is stronger - thank you Jesus. God knows my heart. I only want to be the person He wants me to be.

Let me end with these words that I read somewhere: All of our days have been written in God’s book. When you go through disappointments, don’t stop on that page. Stay the course. Keep believing. You may be tired, discouraged and frus-trated, but don’t give up on your future.

Our God is faithful. God bless,

Shirley.

A follower must move or be left behind.

The driver in front cannot take us to an unfamiliar destination if we sit in the car with the engine switched off. We must get into gear and follow.

The shop assistant cannot lead us to those elusive Portuguese Pickled Prunes if we stand still. We must leave the relative comforts of the cereal aisle and follow.

If we do not move, we are not a follower, we are a spectator.

Matthew 4:19 is one of several places where Jesus calls His disciples to follow Him. ‘Come, follow me’, he said.

Today, as then, when Jesus calls us to follow Him, He is calling for followers, not spectators. He isn’t asking us to form a fan club or to shout our support from the sidelines. He’s asking for teammates and co-workers, for brothers and sisters to pull their weight in the family business.

Following Jesus means participating in His plans, His purposes and even His very nature - and this means we must follow Him in the everyday, up close, not letting Him out of our sight. There are no distance-learning correspondence courses for this, no part-time studies or evening classes. There is only the constant, guiding presence of Jesus. There is only following...
