This last week (when I am writing this letter) has been an important time for British Sporting history! Whether you are interested in sport

or not, I am sure that no one has escaped the news that the Olympic flame has arrived in Great Britain and has started its journey around the country and, in case you are not aware, it arrives in Southsea on July 15th. Also this weekend Chelsea Football Club were successful in winning the Champions League and a customary victory tour in an open top bus was undertaken in Chelsea to the delight of the crowds of supporters. For me personally, another very special sporting event happened when I was able to witness my 8yr old grandson gain his first rugby trophy for being the ‘best improved player’ for the season in an under 8’s team who were unbeaten the whole of the season.

Dear Readers,

All these events have reminded me that trophies are and important part of life. We may not all be able to be athletes or undertake active roles in sport but in the New Testament we find that there are several mentions of followers of Christ being in the ‘race’ and striving towards the ‘goal’. Thankfully for us it isn’t a competition to see who is the best but it is all about trusting and following Jesus or, as Paul states it in Acts 20: 24, ‘I consider my life worth nothing to me, if only I may finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me – the task of testifying to the gospel of God’s grace’ (NIV) To return to the football and rugby football trophies it took a team to win the trophy and we too are in a team – a team of believers who help and support each other in our individual race. May we continue to run the race well and so with Paul be able to say one day ‘I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day...’ (2 Tim 4:7,8 NIV)God bless you Major Mary

TributeMargaret Goodred (d. 18th April 2012, age 94)

Margaret came to The Salvation Army through Trevor Sivyer, who had met her through his father at Meadow House where they

were both living.Margaret was born 94 years ago in Kirriemuir, Scotland, just a lit-tle north of Dundee. And for the rest of her life she not only loved Scotland, keeping her lovely soft accent, but she also acted as an unofficial advert, often to be heard saying, “Don’t know why you go there, when you could go to Scotland.” She even advised Scotland in comparison to the Grand Canyon!Margaret had four children, Divina, Jim, Margaret and Wally, 10 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.Margaret had a happy childhood and travelled the British Isles, particularly loving her time in Ireland. She also loved animals and there is a lovely story that comes from their time in Ireland – one Margaret shared with me herself, only a few weeks ago. This was the story of an unfortunate seagull who dragged itself into Margaret’s home, its wing injured by a pellet. The bird allowed Mar-garet to pick it up, and she got the pellet out and then nursed the bird back to health over the next 6 weeks, finally letting it go free once again. There was a sense in the family that this bird knew that Margaret would keep it safe and look after it.Margaret was a housewife into her 50s but finally went back to work in a shop for a couple of years. But then she saw an advert for an office clerk in a solicitors, and applied for the job, even though she had no real experience, convincing them that she could do it, showing real tenacity.Margaret spent the last 11 years of her life in Meadow House, where she was very happy. She loved her room, and particularly ap-preciated the way the staff looked after her, and helped her.Margaret touched us with her warmth, her smile and her compas-sion and concern for others. And we rejoice because Margaret’s faith in Jesus Christ has assured her of something we hope for, a safe and wonderful home in eternity with her Saviour. LS

The band felt privileged to receive an invitation to provide an evening programme to the delegates and the following notes of

appreciation confirmed that it was a mutually enjoyable evening of encouragement and blessing.

Dear Mark, this is a short but sincere note to say thank you for your band’s

ministry to us last week at EMC. I have had so many positive com-ments regarding the band’s programme and playing. I personally enjoyed ‘Breathe’ which was played so sensitively. The delegates thoroughly enjoyed the evening and the fact that the band interact-ed so well with them was appreciated. Thank you for all you do and continue to do in his name.

Kind regards, Andrew

Divisional Celebration

I would like to express my gratitude to the staff and delegates at the Easter Music Course for such a lovely week. We had so many

highlights it would be difficult to include them all in one short letter.I particularly enjoyed the ministry of Regent Hall Songsters and Southsea Band. The band brought a lovely programme to us - from the sensitive arrangement of ‘Breathe’ by Dorothy Gates to the fun and up-tempo ‘Tomado de la Mano’ by Eric Silfverberg. These, along with two vocal numbers, ‘It Took a Miracle’ and The First Step’, brought a real sense of enjoyment and challenge to me.I would like to thank Bandmaster Mark Streather and the band for an inspiring and thoroughly enjoyable evening.Claire Simons, Gainsborough

Our Songsters were, along with Boscombe Band, the guest sec-tions participating in this annual celebration. They acquitted

themselves extremely well, both before (four songs) and during the meeting with “Sing For Joy” and “Lift Up The Cross”.

The items were well received and contributed significantly to a time of celebration. From comments received, our Songsters were suc-cessful in bringing both blessing and encouragement. JB

During the week we were treated to some excellent Salvation Army Band playing by the Southsea Citadel Band, starting with

Intrada On Austria and, being mindful of Easter, there was some soulful playing of the second movement of Easter Glory. This pro-gramme proved easy listening to the delegates and was well re-ceived.Brian Anderson reporting in SA Bandsman

Adult & Family MinistriesSouthsea Citadel’s Adult and Family Ministry weekend incorpo-

rated the Home League and the Cameo Club and was led by Lt. Colonels Peter and Brenda Ward. With many Home League and Cameo Club members taking part, the weekend commenced on Saturday 28th April with a Rally, intro-duced by Major Gillian Smith (HLS). Elaine Carter (Gosport) was the guest vocal soloist joined by Jo Warren (Gosport) in a vocal duet. The Home League Singers (Leader Mrs. Pat Hawley) sang two songs, Loving World and Friendship Song accompanied on the piano by Mrs. Joy Catherall. At the Roll Call, seven Churches and Corps were represented in the 95 strong congregation. Lt. Colonel Brenda Ward addressed the Rally speaking of everyone being the Apple of God’s eye, (Psalm 18 verse 8) in which we are loved and protected. The Rally concluded with afternoon tea.

Sunday morning worship, with the theme ‘The vine and the branches’, com-menced with the congregational song All creatures of our God and King.

The Singing Company sang Hallelujah, Salvation and Glory and the Young People’s Band played Deep and Wide. Mrs. Flo Cann and Mrs. Pat Hawley sang a duet Help Me To Make A Difference and Mrs. Julie Bradbury gave a very personal and encouraging testi-mony. The Songsters sang People Need The Lord. In her address, Lt. Col. Brenda spoke of Christ the true vine in which we must abide.

Evening worship led by Colonel Brenda took the theme ‘the unfruit-ful Fig Tree’. Major Joyce Dixon, Cameo Club Leader, thanked Lt. Cols Peter and Brenda. The Home League Singers sang The Friend-ship Song, the Band played O, How I Love Jesus.

SOUTHSEA CITADEL CAMEO CLUB was enthralled with a talk on the RMS TITANIC, given on Tuesday May 1st by Stephen Shaw (Sholing)

a former shipbuilder in Southampton. Stephen (Photo) dressed in White Star Line uniform showed, with multi- media images, many aspects of the ship.

On April 27th 1912 , two weeks after the disaster, the War Cry published an article entitled THE SALVATION ARMY AND THE TITANIC. This reported the disaster naming the Salvationists on board and those who were lost. One of the survivors was Elizabeth Nye of Folke-stone Corps who ultimately became Mrs.Colonel Elizabeth Darby. When news of the disaster came through, the Salvation Army stepped in to organise food, insurance payouts and pastoral visits to families of the sea-men, most of whom lived in South-ampton. Bramwell Booth encour-aged everyone to pray and General Booth and Evangeline Booth both sent messages of support and prayer. The current Salvation Army Hostel Booth House, in Oxford Street, South-ampton was originally The Seamen’s Mission where many of Titanic’s crew resided. In a touching moment, Stephen reminded everyone of how the musicians on board continuously played the hymn tune, Nearer my God to Thee, as the ship slowly sank. T.M.

Titanic CAMEO

Adult & Family MinistriesMrs.Margaret Hardyman gave her testimony after which The Song-sters contributed with You Are The Light. In her address Lt. Col. Brenda gave the challenge ‘are our lives as good on the inside as they appear on the outside? The meeting and the Rally weekend concluded with the congregational song God of Grace and Glory.T.M.

Café Church with Salvacosta

Children’s Work

Guest vocal group SALVACOSTA (Darren Bartlett) were warmly welcomed by a capacity congregation who gathered to enjoy

the special atmosphere of another Café Church evening. Many came for the first time and some returning to worship. This group blended well together and brought a wonderful balance of excite-ment, inspiration and reflection with their powerful, yet sensitive singing aided in full measure by quality backing. Songs such as Shine; Onward and David danced…were sung with real convic-tion, thrilling and challenging in equal measure, whilst the haunting melodies of Bridge over Troubled Water and Shenandoah (Mid all the traffic..) were thought provoking, reassuring and stimulating. A Bible text was provided, via multi-media, to accompany each item and Darren Shaw (Southsea) spoke on God’s blessing of song. Solo-ists Darren Bartlett, Julie Wheeler, Ian French and Tracey Jones all added to the quality of the overall performance, the evening con-cluding with an exhilarating selection from Jesus Christ, Superstar. A different setting for a real evening of worship which touched the hearts of all present.

J.B. / T.M.

The rehearsals for this year’s musical, Go, Go, Jonah, are going really well. We have got quite a few new cast members this

year, which is really good. What we need to do now is sell tickets!! If you would like a ticket please see Trevor Martin and he will be happy to tell you what seats are available.

The plans for Summer Camp are coming together nicely and we only have 5 spaces left. We have had some enquiries from Bognor Regis Corps about it and they are looking at sending some of their children.

Children’s Work

Our Summer Camp will be a great time for the youngsters able attend, but there is a financial outlay! What about showing your interest by sponsoring a child? See Amanda for details. Ed.

I have been a school coordinator at St Swithun’s School for Faith and Football for nearly a year now and things have been going well, although some weeks have been a bit crazy!!! If you would like to teach children to read and develop their confidence then please let me know. The leader of the assembly team I am on is leaving next year and at the moment there is no one to take on that responsibil-ity, so we are not sure what is going to happen with that.

Over the past few months I have been to different corps leading their YP weekends. The first one was travelling overseas to Guern-sey, thankfully Mark was invited to this weekend as I don’t like flying!!! It was a good time of catching up with friends who live there and the meetings went really well with their children taking a firm role in the weekend with dance, singing, timbrels, puppets, flags and the playing of instruments. The second one was just down the road from my house at Sholing. I had a good time there and the children and adults showed off their talents with vocal solos, a piano duet, brass quartet, guitar and piano duet and one of the children showed us her art work. Please pray....

• That we fill the remaining spaces for camp as it will greatly help us financially.

• For the children who will be taking part in the musical and attending camp that somehow they will know Jesus more.

• That, if it is Gods will that the assembly team should carry on, a new leader will be found.

Thank you for your support and don’t forget to buy your tickets for the musical!!!!Amanda

Annual Appeal 2012

The two most important requirements for major success are:1. Being in the right place at the right time & 2. Doing something

about it. The first requirement depends on the time of day and the loca-tion of the collecting stand!! The second depends on the number of col-lectors we can mobilise. This is the bit we can do something about!

Please sign up and help us to capitalise on the opportunity of collecting at the stations:Portsmouth & Southsea Railway Station (peak times) Monday 25th June to Friday 29th of June - 6.30-9.30am; 4pm-6pmThe early bird catches the worm; the early collector catches the commuters!!N.B. If you can collect at other times of day, please let me know.

The other remaining standing days for this year are:Saturday 2nd June - Citywide - 9am-4pmSaturday 30th June -Sainsbury’s, Commercial Rd - 12noon-3pmFriday 20th of July - Citywide - 9am-4pmSaturday 21st July - Citywide - 9am-4pmSaturday 8th Sept - Morrisons, Anchorage Pk - 3pm-6pmFriday 12th Oct - Sainsbury’s, Farlington - 9am-12noon Saturday 13th Oct - Sainsbury’s, Farlington - 12noon-3pm

May God put a smile on your face as we collect to help those in need!Trevor Sivyer, Annual Appeal Coordinator

The Annual Appeal Concert on 15th September will be an evening of song with our special guests St. John’s College Choir and our own Southsea Songsters. Variety will be added by B/M Mark Streather who will contribute Xylophone solos. Our friends from St. John’s have supported ‘Carols at The Kings’ for many years with their fine singing, but this will be the first time they have performed in our Citadel, so let’s make them feel very wel-come by ensuring we are there to support and by bringing others along.JB

Weekly Giving

Corps Audit

You will recall previous reference in Citadel Scene for our need to im-prove the quality of our giving and so, with this in mind, we shall be having a planned giving programme (now known as ‘Give for Growth’) to revisit spiritually and practically this vital aspect of Christian life. The provisional dates are January 17th to 28th. For your prayerful consideration, the following extract from THQ’s programme brochure:

Corps Audit will take place on July 10th - all Corps Sectional books given, please, to Major Mary or Captain Lynne by Sunday July 1st. Thanks in anticipation.

16 Citadel Scene

My first appointment from the Training College in 1957 was as a youth officer to Boscombe Corps. This meant I worked hard amongst the

then ‘Teddy Boys’ of the area, from 6 to 10pm, in a nearby hall.

During the day I reported to my C.O. who didn’t know what to do with me - except to ask what I had been doing. This meant that I spent a lot of time down at the empty club doing this and that. It also meant that I got to know well the second-hand bookshops in Boscombe. I enjoyed browsing round them, finding the odd bargain for my growing library.

I became familiar with two names: Barnes and J.F.Brown, both ancient Bible Commentaries. Needless to say, I added them to my treasured col-lection. In later years, because of their weight and my travelling commit-ments overseas, I had to part company with these dear friends.

Now to my point. I am getting on fairly well with my computer classes and even venture ‘online’, as they say.

Two weeks ago, a computer expert from the Corps came to visit me to install free Bible study material including two or three completely transla-tions of the Bible. Then my friend also installed three or four ancient Bible Commentaries for me, all no longer under copyright.

You guessed it, these turned out to be works of the very same names I had known, years ago, from the second-hand bookshops of Boscombe.

The most significant thing for me is that these men, dedicated Bible scholars whose books went out of print long ago, are now in the brilliant economy of God ministering to thousands of Bible students over the worldwide web.

Truly, God moves in a mysterious way as the Sword of the Lord becomes electronic. KG
