ed itor’s thoughts...I had no idea that heart attacks were the number one killer for women. Everyone just sees pink in October and is ready to “Save the Ta-Tas”, when women’s hearts are what is in danger. Our breasts make us “feel” like women, but our hearts are what “make” us women. It is our hearts that carry the physical burden from our emotional strain. Women are so confused these days as to what their role in society is...are we strong women who are powerful in the world or are we the silent backbone that supports the strong men who are powerful in the world (either way...we rule the world).

I know it’s cheesy, but women ARE from Venus and men from Mars. Men are simple creatures who think, talk and act simply. Women are the complex ones who read into what is being said when there is not enough said, who expect men to read our minds and to know what “the look” means. Don’t tell me you’ve never said, “I shouldn’t HAVE to tell you”.

In addition to that, I think when you have a child they activate your “sissy button” and hand you your guilt card. If my son’s feelings get hurt, I actually contemplate taking down another 6 year old child. When I can’t explain to him why some kids are just mean or why some grown-ups don’t do what they say they are going to do...my “sissy button” kicks in. When I have to work so many hours, then bring work home and he will sit at the bar with me at my computer and we will watch SpongeBob together, just because he wants to be by me instead of playing in the backyard. There goes my “sissy button” and you can take my guilt card too!

So...women have society pressures, work/careers, school, motherhood, relationships, family, body issues. I constantly question every-thing I do. I don’t exercise and when I’m stressed I eat a Black Tie Mousse Cake from Olive Garden or a Little Bucket Parfait from KFC, pout and zone out on the computer or watching tv, so I don’t have to think about it. So this issue is dedicated to women’s hearts...to make you aware that even though we don’t see them, they are the engine that run our entire body. May you start being aware of your actions that affect them and work toward a healthy, balanced life that will give you a strong and healthy heart.

Women and Heart DiseaseWomen and Heart DiseaseWomen and Heart DiseaseHeart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States and is a major cause of disability. Almost 700,000 people die of heart disease in the U.S. each year. That is about 29% of all U.S. deaths (CDC, 2008). Heart disease is not just a man's disease. Heart attack, stroke and other cardiovascular diseases are devastating to women, too. In fact, coronary heart disease, which causes heart attacks, is the leading cause of death for American women (AHA, 2009). Even though heart disease is the number one killer of women, many are not aware of this statistic. The majority of women still believe breast cancer to be the number one killer for women. Nearly one-third or 27% of all female deaths each year are from heart disease (WomenHeart, 2009). Of the 500,000 annual deaths from cardiovascular disease, 267,000 women die from heart attacks—six times as many women as will die from breast cancer (WomenHeart, 2009).

Women who are minorities, have diabetes, are overweight, smoke, have high blood pressure or high cholesterol are all at greater risk of heart disease. For African American women, the age-adjusted rate of heart disease is 72% higher than for white women and a majority of Hispanic women over 20 years old have borderline high or high cholesterol levels (WomenHeart, 2009).

Women are less likely to be treated the same as men experiencing signs and symptoms of a heart attack and many times women put off seeking medical attention for symptoms due to fear, embarrassment and time constraints (many are too busy taking care of family to seek care for themselves). To further complicate scenario, women’s symptoms may vary from the typical or stereotype symptoms of men.

The most crucial point women need to be educated on is that women can significantly decrease their risk of heart disease if they have knowledge of the signs, symptoms, risk factors, questions to ask when seeking medical help and the steps required to develop and maintain a healthy lifestyle. A woman who is fully educated on the signs, symptoms and risk factors of heart disease is empowered to ensure they receive the medical treatment required.

Symptoms of a Heart Attack:Symptoms of a Heart Attack:- Pressure, burning, squeezing in the center of the chest- Discomfort in one or both arms, shoulders, neck, jaw, stomach or back- Shortness of breath- Fatigue, cold sweat, nausea, weakness

Less Typical Symptoms of Heart Disease in Women:Less Typical Symptoms of Heart Disease in Women:- Pain in upper back, jaw, neck or shoulder- Shortness of breath- Flu-like symptoms: nausea or vomiting, cold sweats- Fatigue or weakness- Feelings of anxiety, loss of appetite, discomfort

Risks of Heart Disease (that can be controlled):Risks of Heart Disease (that can be controlled): Hypertension, High Cholesterol, Smoking, Diabetes, Obesity, Inactivity. Those That Cannot Be Controlled: Those That Cannot Be Controlled: Increasing age, Family History, Race, Prior heart attack or stroke

Adopt a Heart Healthy Lifestyle: Stop smoking, be physically active for 30 minutes a day, eat a heart healthy diet, maintain a healthy weight, manage your blood pressure. If you have diabetes, control your blood sugar. Consume alcohol in moderation.

The community of Amarillo and the surrounding areas are fortunate to have a dedicated facility that provides care for those who are at risk or have cardiovascular disease. The Heart Hospital of Northwest Texas opened its doors on October 1, 2003 as an addition to Northwest Texas Healthcare System. Northwest Texas Healthcare System identified a need and immediately set forth to develop a plan that would meet the needs of the community. The additional beds were to be dedicated to those with cardiac disease as heart disease was becoming more prevalent in the United States and had surpassed all cancers as the number one killer. Statistical data also indicated that Texas had one of the highest rates of heart disease compared to other states.

The Heart Hospital is a 90-bed facility consisting of large private rooms and state of the art technology. The Cath lab equipment is manned with our specialized staff who have 73 years combined Cath lab experience. The Heart Hospital is the only facility in the region that is dedicated to caring for patient with cardiovascular disease. That is what we do 24/7. The staff in our Coronary Intensive Care and Cardiac Med/Surg floors is specially trained to care for the patient experiencing cardiovascular disease. All licensed staff is required to have Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) training, which is an advanced training. ACLS is rarely required for all licensed staff in other facilities.

The Heart Hospital has carried on the tradition of community involvement that has been seen through the years by Northwest Texas Healthcare System. We are a commu-nity partner involved in multiple health fairs and educational presentations. One such community partner for the Heart Hospital is the American Heart Association, which brings educational programs like the national Go Red for Women CampaignGo Red for Women Campaign. This event, which includes cardiac screenings and educational sessions, has grown to reach over 750 women in the community. This years event is February 17, with free health screenings and educational breakout sessions at 8:30 am to 11am and a luncheon at 1200 pm featuring motivational keynote speaker Sally Baskey. In addition, the hospital offers a free cardiovascular risk assessment for the community. Simply go to the northwest website at www.nwtexas healthcare.com and click on the HeartAware link to take your 7 minute risk assessment. If you are identified as a high-risk patient, you can choose to participate in a one-on-one educational session with our cardiac nurse. All of this is absolutely FREE to the community!

Rhythm of Life Cardiac Rehab Center at The Heart Hospital of Northwest Texas believes cardiac patients should have opportunities to facilitate their own recoveries while progressing toward healthier, more active lifestyles. The center offers a unique, patient-centered program emphasizing a personalized approach to recovery through key components- exercise, education and encour-agement. The highly skilled, professional healthcare team includes cardiologist, registered nurses, exercise specialists and dietitians—all dedicated to making the process of recovery a positive and rewarding experience.

AVENUE

10 will be moving into its new

home this February, and we will

be presenting our first project the

weekends of March 20th and 27th.

.

The project is “24/768”, 24 plays and 768

square feet of art will be conceived,

written, produced, and staged for the

public in 4 days. “DEFINE YOUR OWN

PARAMETERS” is the motto here, so there

is a great amount of freedom for visual

artists and writers to interpret the themes of

the various evenings into their work.

.

Artists, directors, actors, photographers, playwrights, hangers-on, comedians, groupies,

musicians, fluffers, dealers, masseuses, fans, and wannabes are encouraged to come out

and play!

.

Here is how it will work...

FRIDAY 8pm

Everyone meets at AVENUE 10. Ice is broken, alcohol is consumed, good times are had

by all. Everyone signs up for their respective tasks for what they want to get into

(directors, writers, actors, musicians, painters, etc etc etc.). It is first-come, first-serve as

far as those who sign up, so get there and slap your name down before all the slots are

taken up. A pre-determined number of participants will be needed each evening.

Eventually everyone tosses one idea into a hat for the theme of the night. Everyone

enjoys one last drink. Then one theme is drawn out of the hat. Visual artists and writers

rejoice that they have received the theme while still sober enough to remember what it

is. Writers are then given an envelope with the number and gender of actors they will

now go write a ten-minute play for while artists are shown to their 4’X8’ section to

create in and on. These can be photographs, a painting or two or six, statues made out

of pork rinds, whatever the artists determine they need to do to interpret the theme

visually. Writers depart to write said plays while they can still stand. Artists

get to work doing their thing.

SATURDAY 8am

This is the deadline for writers to submit plays.

9am

Writers and directors return, some sober, some hung over, and a few still intoxicated

from the night before. Each director draws one play at random and has one hour to read

it and discuss it with the writer. This is often done over a cup or two of coffee, while

everyone curses the morning and wishes for night to fall..10amActors arrive, grateful for the extra hour of sleep. Each director draws his or her castfrom a hat. Actors get their scripts and the directors take them to their respectiverehearsal areas. These may or may not be on the premises, depending. Writers stickaround for a read through, and then the rehearsals commence..11:45amMusicians interested in playing that night wander in and sign up, hoping to form a unitslightly more cohesive than a jam band at a Rainbow Gathering. Those who have theguts stick it out and work out a playlist, who is playing what, what key the songs are in,etc. Those who are strong, courageous, or just too drunk to move stick around to formwhat will be the house band for the night. Those who are too scared or just smartenough to see the writing on the wall flee in terror for the nearest bar..12pm to 6pm6 hours of madness. Actors try to find the proper motivation to delivery their lines,directors try to find meaning in the stories they are telling, writers try to find a quietplace to sleep, and the producers try to find people to buy tickets to the show..7pmThis is the deadline for visual artists to be done. All work is set in place and ready fordisplay. This artwork will serve as the backdrop for the performances and will be setaround the stage area.

Everyone gathers to go over the order of the show, the run down on music, and for afinal pep talk. There is much hugging, well-wishing, and ego-boosting going on. Someoneeventually makes an overly sentimental speech and then everyone breaks to wait forthe inevitable.

8pm

Show starts. Audience has arrived and are seated. The world does not tilt on its axis,

though it comes dangerously close. World premiere of six brand new plays, and with live

musicians, along with the showing of 6 new original works of art. The audience is wowed

by the mastery of the first act and cries, laughs, and cheers in the appropriate spots.

8:45pm

Audience rises from their seats and shuffles into intermission, still astounded by the

absolute brilliance of it all. They submit ideas for next night’s theme. See? Interactive

theatre!

.

10pm

The show ends, the actors take their bows, and the theme for the next night is drawn

live onstage. This is done to a great amount of fanfare. Writers and visual artists complain

bitterly about the theme and begin to do their thing.

The audience is shuffled out the door and the process is started anew.

SUNDAY 9am to 7:59pm...Rinse, repeat.

.

And do this two weekends. That is how we get 24 plays and 768 square feet of art in 4

days. So – decide what part you would like to play and come get involved!

.

Now clearly there are some things that people participating might need to know

beforehand so we strongly encourage anyone who is interested in participating to contact

us. However, this is not mandatory to participate. If you need more information please
