Welcome to the February edition

of the Community Scene, for

Deeping, Stamford & Bourne.

Our communities have been busy lately, with

awards, events planning and celebrations (p5 –

13). Are you involved with your local community?

Tell us your plans and news here at the Scene and

we’ll help to spread the word.

It’s just turned a little chilly as we put this edition

together, so maybe it’s time to curl up with a

recommended read (p43) or get out the beauty

treats (p20 & 21). For the family, why not get a

good old board game out (p30). If you’re happy

wrapping up and getting out and about, then some

sensible fitness advice (p25) could be coupled with

some winter gardening (p37). What’s on for half

term features in our guide this month (p28 & 29).

Stuart, who started his own business, Deeping Gas, in Peterborough, works and lives in the area and has been in the central heating industry since he started his career. Stuart is a Worcester Accredited Installer, and caught the judges’ eye with his passion for renewables.

The competition, aimed at Worcester’s installers, asked them to send details of their most unusual Worcester installation and the most unique one would be in with the chance of being the future face of the advertising campaign which is supporting Worcester’s 50th anniversary year.

Stuart’s winning award entry was from 2010, when he converted his existing Greenstar Highflow boiler to a system type boiler to accommodate a newly installed Worcester FKT ‘in-roof’ solar package. After the work, Stuart measured the performance of the panels with results that were even a surprise to him, with the panels still providing some energy even on a cold overcast day.

Deeping Gas & Electrical Services is a local family run business based in Market Deeping and covers a 50 mile

radius, and specialises in all aspects of heating/plumbing and electrical works. Stuart’s company boasts international experience in installing renewable technologies since 2003, having worked in Germany, Switzerland and Holland.

During a full days photo shoot stint in Birmingham, Stuart had a number of photos taken that will be used throughout the year in the trade press and as part of the advertising for Worcester’s 50th anniversary year.

Stuart said: “Getting involved with the advertising campaign was such a brilliant experience and so different to my day job. It was great to get an insight into how adverts are created.

“Being the new Face of Worcester is a dream come true. I am very enthusiastic about the brand and its products, and won’t install anything else.

“I choose to use Worcester because they always come out on top, and were recently voted number one in a Which? report for customer service. Not only that, but they have such a unique customer focus and a technical

services department that is second to none. On the rare occasion that I do have a problem - the award winning team is always on hand to talk through any of my queries, over the phone or via email. Worcester don’t just sell you a boiler, they sell you the whole package.”

Sue Pennington, consumer brand manager at Worcester said: “Congratulations to Stuart, it is fantastic to have an installer who is extremely passionate about our renewable products as the Face of Worcester. Installers spread the word about new renewable technologies, and I am confident that Stuart will be a great ambassador for Worcester and our products.”

Deeping Gas & Electrical Services Ltd is Gas Safe registered and also in the process of becoming MCS registered.

MARKET DEEPING TOWN COUNCIL TREES

Market Deeping Town Council has received a donation of

eight oak trees from a resident of Market Deeping and these

were planted in the Rectory Paddock recently. They form an

avenue of trees which will be officially dedicated later this

year as ‘The Jubilee Avenue’ in recognition of the Queen’s

Jubilee celebrations.

The Council is very grateful to the Deeping resident for his kind

donation, which have all been grown from acorns that were

planted by his grandson several years ago and have been nurtured

to approximately 3-4 metres in height. The Council also received

a large amount of sapling trees from the Deepings Lions which

were planted at the same time, as part of the Lions’ International

campaign to plant 1 million trees in a year. These are mainly Ash

trees, and have been planted around the council’s land.

MARKET DEEPING TOWN COUNCIL DINNER

This month, why not join in with the global Swimarathon

whilst supporting Polio Eradication. You don’t have to be a

long distance, endurance swimmer, but merely to be able to

swim 100 metres and have fun!

The aim of the day is to break the world record for the number of

swimmers swimming 100m in a given hour, whilst fundraising to

help eradicate Polio in the five remaining countries where it can be

found. Worldwide this event will take place at the same time, and

could mean an early morning or late swim elsewhere in the world!

But here in the UK, the swim is from 12 noon to 1pm. Support The

Deeping & Werrington Rotary Clubs on 25 February at Stanground

College Pool.

PANTRY HAIR CARE

Sodium bicarbonate is the formal name for what is commonly known as baking soda.

Because of its unique cleaning properties, baking soda can be used occasionally to “clarify” hair to eliminate buildup from commercial shampoos and conditioners.

Add 1 tsp. of baking soda to your shampoo, then leave the mixture in the hair for about three to five minutes and rinse.

AN INTRODUCTION TO LIMITING BELIEFSWHAT ARE BELIEFS?A belief is a strongly held opinion about yourself & the world around you. Beliefs create habitual thought patterns that continue on a loop system to play over and over in our heads.

So if you find yourself always repeating the same pattern of thoughts in your mind, it’s because there is an underlying belief that’s responsible for those thoughts.

How many kinds of beliefs are there? There are two kinds, firstly, your natural belief, the ones you were born with, ones of balance & purpose; these are empowering beliefs for example;• “I’mcapableofdoingwhateverIputmymindto”• “Iappreciate&acceptmyselfthewayIam”Secondly, you picked up or created other beliefs – usually in childhood, that do not support your goals/dreams. These unnatural beliefs lead to fears, low self-esteem, doubts, lack of confidence, depression, stress etc…These learned beliefs restrict you and hold you back from living a positive life, these are those limiting beliefs like for example;• “I’mnotgoodenough”• “Lifeishard”So, if you are struggling in any area of your life, it’s because you have beliefs that are holding you back…… Therefore if you want to improve your situation, you must improve your belief system.

The next step is to learn how to identify the beliefs that re holding you back:I recall being told this by one of my trainers, and it’s stuck

with me; You weren’t created to struggle, you were created to thrive, you have an obligation to succeed!!!You will always turn your belief system into reality and you won’t tolerate anything that doesn’t match your beliefs, so an easy way to deduce your limiting is to identify your negative environment.

Try this exercise; Take a look at situations that you are tolerating but not enjoying, now ask yourself what belief must I be currently be holding onto in order to keep this situation in my life?

Then the next step is to contact me to arrange your FREE INITIAL CONSULTATION

to discuss your options without obligation NOW on 01778 38 17 80

(this is a 24hr voicemail, please leave contact details and I will return your call at my earliest convenience)

New Year, is the health equivalent of pressing the refresh button on your life. No matter what you did, a New year means a new you. The process is as simple as it is motivating.

Learn from the past experiences and plan for a better way forward. Reinvent yourself, set new goals, and become the person you want to be.

Using the above ‘mantra’ we can apply this to your ‘new’

dietary needs. No doubt you have been bombarded with

numerous emails or magazines through January, all related

to losing pounds a day for 30 days. Generally I think most

people know what’s not good for them, it’s the temptation

that doesn’t help.

• Attendafitnessclasswith

friends as you’re more

inclined to go together.

So you have the foundation of an initial

plan, so all you need to do now is find

some motivation. Pictures, clothes,

Let’s try a few simple steps

• Sweetsandconfectionarytakeintoworkorgivetocharityandclear

the cupboards of all the temptations, well almost all!

• Reduce your portion sizes, try eating your main meals from a side plate

but ensure your eating regularly throughout the day

• Planyourmealsahead,asyourlesslikelytogoforsomethingbad.

It’s not about denying yourself your favorite food it’s about eating in moderation.

Starting a fitness regime in the New Year is quite popular

and coupled with your nutrition, can get you good results.

Similar to your nutrition, it needs to be planned and

realistic. • Ifyou’realittleselfconsciousmostofthemainsupermarketsareselling

fitness DVDs, you can do these at home with a friend

• Ifyou’replanningtostartrunning,getabuddyanddon’tthinkyouhaveto

run for miles. Choose a short route and break it down into stages of walk/

fast walk and maybe a jog.

NEW YEAR

First of all, accessories should be used to:

• Drawattentiontoyourbestbits.

• Makeanoutfitlookmodern,andtherefore,makeit

last another season.

• Lookgreatwithoutspendingafortune.

• Changethelookofanoutfit(fromdaytonight)to

get more usage from it.

With accessories, you’ll find the most flattering

looks will suit your body shape and skin tone but

there are a few general rules that should always be

kept in mind;

• Harmoniseaccessorieswithyouroutfit–bythis,

we mean to make sure there is a common colour,

theme, fabric, texture, style or design. For example.

If you’re wearing a floaty outfit with light, warm

colours (a la Louis Vuitton this season),

accessorise with jewellery, shoes and bags of the

same colour scheme. Similarly, if you’re wearing

bright shoes (seen on the S/S catwalks of Dolce and

Gabbanna and Jonathon Saunders), wearing a top

in a similar colour has an ‘eyes-up’ effect which is

every slimming as it draws someone’s attention

upwards.

• Harmoniseaccessorieswitheachother–thiswill

create a look that appears ‘together’ and clean, so,

for example if you’re shoes are silver, wear silver

jewellery; if you have a statement necklace, team the

colours with a bracelet or hair-piece.

Finally, consider your body shape when accessorising;

• Ifyou’resmallscale(smalltorso,smalllegs,

generally petite frame) choose small to medium

accessories. Shoes should have thinner soles and

heels, as any larger can dwarf your legs and create

an ‘eyes-down’ look.

It is easy to ruin a great outfit by teaming

it with the wrong accessories. But, it’s

also incredibly easy to make an ordinary

outfit look great with the right accessories,

because, when used correctly, they pull

the entire look together. So, if you’re a bit

puzzled about what to do when it comes to

accessorising, here are a few guidelines to

keep you looking beautiful!

AccessorisingHEALTH, HAIR & BEAUTYFASHION

Page 27: Comms Scene Feb*

27

• Ifyou’remediumscale(averageframe,balanced

torso and legs) you’re lucky! Any size accessory will

suit you.

• Ifyou’relargescale(largerframe,biggertorso

and shorter legs OR, long torso and long legs),

choose medium to large accessories a small ones

will place emphasis on your size. Shoes should

have larger soles and heels to add height and

balance out your legs.

And once you’ve perfected the art of accessorising, you’ll

save tonnes of money, re-wear clothes you’d hidden

away in your wardrobe, and never be stuck about what to

wear to work or for a night out again!

Knitted rosetteDoes that bigger knitting project seem too much to take on? Do you have lots of remnants of wool? You can combine the need for a smaller project with using up the remnants PLUS making some small gifts for friends. Accessories such as knitted or crotched brooches have featured in our shops either on their own or with hats and coats. This quick and easy knit will inspire you and if it’s not quite right, it won’t take long to knit up another!

Board Game hour(and a great gift idea too!)The festive season usually sees an influx of new board games in your

home, but how many get played?! What greater way to spend time

together, forget about the housework and stir up some memories of

sibling rivalry over who’s turn it is to be the banker, or who gets to be

the ‘green pieces’ in Ludo.

Games are not just about fun and family time though, they also bring

in education and problem solving. A game which ticks all these boxes

is Callisto. It’s easy to learn, but uses strategic skills, dexterity and

a bit of luck (so any age can play!). The game was designed by

the world’s most accomplished game inventor, Reiner Knizia who has

won major international board game awards. The object of the game

is to get rid of all of your coloured tiles onto the game board and takes

just a few minutes to learn.

Handbag GamesWe’re always dashing from

one activity to the next

(usually for the children!) and sometimes there’s

time to fill or a child waiting for the other. Launched in the 1970’s,

Top Trumps became a popular playground game costing just a small

amount so children could save their pocket money for the next set. In

recent years, Top Trumps have seen a revival covering television and

film characters, sports and modern cartoon characters.

Harnessing 208 horses the motor is capable of 145 mph

and will sprint from 0-62 in 6.9 seconds. It feels every bit

as fast as the figures suggest and the gear-change paddles

on the steering wheel help with that ‘boy-racer’ thrill you

sometimes need after a bad day at work.

Throw the FR+ around corners – and it sticks to the road;

dab the accelerator on the straight and you are pushed

back in your seat as the car gets down on its haunches for

a gratifying sprint. But drive the car sensibly and it behaves

like any normal hatchback. It’s just handy to know that if

you need a bit of ‘oomph’ to quickly overtake that irritating

lorry then it’s there for you. The car has it all really – as long

as you’re not expecting a large seven seat multi-purpose-

vehicle. Try the SEAT Alhambra if you are!

Inside, the driver’s seat is supportive and the steering wheel

adjusts for a satisfying grip. The dials are clear and all the

knobs and switches feel logically set out. Visibility is good

and, in the rear, my children sat happily in their child-seats,

which were fitted securely into the ISOFIX anchoring system.

My wife found the front passenger area spacious and

cosseting, although on the one occasion when she travelled

in the rear, she commented that legroom was a little limited.

And when it came to loading, the decent-sized boot was

large enough for a buggy and copious amounts of filled-to-

the-brim supermarket shopping bags.

I TEST DROVE the latest SEAT Leon

recently - and the 2.0 DSI FR+ DSG

auto demo model certainly got my

new year off to a flying start.

As a family man, I found the car reassuring to be in. It doesn’t

have a five-star Euro NCAP score, but it has an impressive

enough four-star (Occupant and Child) result. The car feels

well-made and there are driver and front passenger airbags

as well as side and curtain airbags. The SEAT Leon is also

equipped with traction control gadgetry to help keep it on the

road and anti-lock brakes to ensure it scrubs off speed safely.

The FR+ has 225/40 tyres on big 18 inch alloys, Bi-xenon

headlights to help you see (and be seen) just that bit better

and it has useful front parking sensors too.

The SEAT Leon FR+ with the 6-speed DSG auto gearbox will

set you back £23,100 on the road. Not the cheapest model,

but nearly £3000 less than the top-of-the-range 155 mph

Cupra R – and almost as exciting to drive.

Garden SceneBy Joseph Whitehead www.gardenwiseadvice.com

February - not so bleak this winter (I’ve still got Roses in flower!) and as white snowdrops unfurl, the heavenly citrus scent of Witch Hazel floating on the breeze, we know spring is just around the corner. Much to do in the garden!

Early spring delightsFor me a must have plant for the winter garden is the shrub Hamamelis,

or witch hazel. Flowers are exquisitely delicate papery tassels, from

yellow to red and orange with a subtle citrus scent, most flowering

now some in the autumn. Easy to grow, it prefers lighter soils and does

well in semi shade or full sun. With no routine pruning needed this is a

wonderful plant to brighten up any dreary winter’s day.

Good varieties - Hamamelis x intermedia ‘Pallida’, ‘Diane’, ‘Jelena’, ‘Arnolds

promise’, ‘Copper Beauty’ and Hamamelis mollis.

Another early spring delight is Daphne mezereum. Gorgeous pink flowers borne

on bare stem with a little scent, this small shrub can’t fail to raise a smile!

Easy to cultivate can tolerate most soils in full sun or partial shade, no regular

pruning needed just plant it some where it can be seen and enjoyed.

£Loss of Child Benefits hides a more frightening truthThe latest government spat over the reduction of child benefits for high

earning families has created a massive amount of heat in the press, but

whilst the argument highlights the need that many people have for that

income, it masks the real story which is the worrying lack of planning

that most families have in place for their finances.

Most people take good health for granted. But how

would your family manage financially if you lost your

income through accident or illness unexpectedly? A

government source recently revealed that the average

person in the UK has savings of only around £400

(BBC radio 4 12/1/2012). It’s a sad fact of life that

accidents, illness and death can happen to anyone, at

any age. If the unexpected occurs, the last thing your

family wants to worry about is money.

On average a family needs £455 each week to cover

its costs meaning that most people would be in

trouble very quickly if the worst happened yet very few

ever address this possibility (source NFU mutual).

You can give yourself and your family financial peace

of mind, with a range of protection plans but the choice

can be bewildering and the cost can vary massively.

The best way to cut through all the options is to seek a

review with an Independent Financial Advisor who will

help you get the right amount of cover for your needs,

review your circumstances on a regular basis, and

ensure that you and your family are protected if the

worst happens. Call us today to book you review.
