French in the New World

• Jacques Cartier was sent by France– Found the St. Lawrence River– Built settlement of Montreal

• Samuel de Champlain – Discovered two of the Great Lakes– Given title of Father of New France

The English

• John Smith and Sir Thomas Dale– Helped to make Jamestown a thriving colony– Established cash crops of tobacco and indigo

• The Pilgrims came in 1620 to Plymouth, Massachusetts

• They left England to escape religious persecution

• Why did they not have as many problems with the Indians?1. The Indians had just suffered a plague and were

too weak to fight2. Pilgrims treated them with respect and shared

the gospel with them

• The English settlements were different from the French and Spanish in three ways:

1. Most were under private investors, not government funded

2. They brought their families with them3. They were Protestant

Religion

• Initially, every English colony had an established church that all were required to be a member of.

• Later religious pluralism was allowed in the colonies.

• In France and Spanish colonies, you HAD to be Roman Catholic

Education

• English colonies viewed education as important because you needed to read Scripture, learn about God and understand His will.

• The pastors often taught the kids. Later teachers were hired

• In Roman Catholic colonies there was less emphasis on education
