Energy Resources

Natural Resources

• Needs that are provided by nature• 2 types

–Renewable – nature replaces or replenishes them

• Solar, wind, hydro

–Nonrenewable – limited supply• Oil, coal

Page 4: Ch 15 Sec 3

Renewable Energy sources

• Water – Hydroelectric, rivers, waterfalls, dams (need to be near

water)

Page 6: Ch 15 Sec 3

Renewable Energy sources

• Geothermal – heat from the earth (need to be near

hotspots)

Renewable Energy sources

• Solar – energy from the suns rays (capture, clouds, night)

Page 10: Ch 15 Sec 3

Renewable Energy sources

• Wind – Wind energy pushes turbines (need many

turbines for a little energy, consistently windy areas)

Page 11: Ch 15 Sec 3

Other renewable resources

• Biomass – chemical energy stored in living things

• Hydrogen fuel cell – creates energy by reacting hydrogen and oxygen

Page 12: Ch 15 Sec 3

Nonrenewable energy sources

• Oil, coal, natural gas

• Likely to run out in our lifetime

• Creates pollution

Page 13: Ch 15 Sec 3

Air Pollution

Fossil Fuels

Page 15: Ch 15 Sec 3

Nonrenewable energy sources

• Nuclear Energy• Create heat by

splitting Uranium atoms

• + clean, cheap, efficient

• - dangerous, uranium is limited, but plentiful

Page 16: Ch 15 Sec 3

Conserving Energy Resources

• Reduce energy needs and increasing energy efficiency

• Problems – convenience and initial cost
