Who were they?

The king was called Ferdinand II of Aragn, later called Ferdinand V of Castile. He at first was just the king of Aragn. He was born 1452 and he died in 1516. He came from Trastmara dinasty, because he was the son of John II of Aragn and Juana Enrquez.

Who were they?

Isabella I of Castile was born in vila in 1451 and she died in 1504. She also came from Trastmara family. She had to fight with other people to get the kingdom. Later she became queen, and she married with Ferdinand II of Aragn, unifying the two kingdoms, but this just was the union of two families, respective kingdoms had their own laws and methods to govern.

They had six sons. But just one of their daughters (Joanna the mad) became queen of the kingdom but she was disabled because her mental illness and his husband took the power. Later, his son will get it.

The kingdom of Aragn principally wanted to conquer along the Mediterranean Sea, Italy (Sicily...) and the kingdom of Castile wanted to reconquer Iberian Peninsula and defeat the Muslims.

They reconquered the completly Iberian Peninsula with the conquest of the Muslim kingdom of Granada in 1492.

Type of government

King Ferdinand II of Aragon and Queen Isabella I of Castile set up the Spanish Inquisition in 1478. It operated in Spain and in all Spanish colonies and territories, which included the Canary Islands, the Spanish Netherlands, the Kingdom of Naples, and all Spanish possessions in North, Central, and South America.

They created a general police force under the direction of officials appointed by themselves, and endowed with large powers of summary jurisdiction, even in capital cases. The original hermandades continued to serve as modest local police units until their final suppression in 1835.
