    From the Editor:

First off, I want to say welcome to

Carbon Magazines premiere issue hopefully, thefirst of many. Carbon Magazine and [The Blog]were founded out of a stand still of what todo with my life once my time at college hasended. Ive always had a liking for fashion and anaffinity for online journalism. The combination ofthese two elements formed into Carbon [The

Blog] and with the introduction of this issue,Carbon Magazine.

My goal for this magazine is to open thereaders eyes to new trends and to entertainthem with stories that are read justbecause. (Ahem, Kingsleys Corner!) I also hope

to achieve a point of view that is unique toCarbon only a view that offers discovery ofthe latest trends in fashion but also show thereader how to tailor those trends to fit withtheir personal style.

Lastly, I want to say thank you to myteam of writers for all of their hard work. And I want to say thanks to you for

picking up this issue and reading.

    Enjoy,Hilary PendletonEditor in Chief

    1. Prepare:

Remove the laces and wash them.

Chances are those are as dirty as the

shoes. Using masking tape, tape off therubber soles to protect them from glue.

Next, stuff the inside of the shoes with

newspaper this will hold the shape of

    the shoes as they dry.

So you bought those crisp, white canvas flats an

wore them everyday for a month and the

looked great. But now theyre tarnished with scufmarks, dirt and who knows what else. Rathe

than tossing them out, why not re-finish them

with glitter? A magical solution to the inevitable

    CARBON shows you how.

    Supplies Needed:

    Old pair of canvas sneakers

    Masking tape

    Newspaper

    Glittering and craft-foam glue

    Fine glitter any color

    Clear polyurethane spray

Optional: Q-tips and Nail polish remover

    2. Glue and Glitter:

Begin to spread a thin (but even) layer of

glue onto the canvas area of the shoe. You

can use a paintbrush, but my glue came with

a brush in the lid so I used that instead.

Be generous with the glue and coat as large

of an area as manageable, this way you willhave less sections to blend.

Sprinkle glitter over the glue-coated area

and shake off excess. (I recommend working

in a cardboard box to minimize messiness.) I

chose to do a silver glitter but feel free to

choose anything that tickles your fancy. Re-

peat this step over the same glued area about

2 more times to make sure youve really gotit glittered.

Repeat the aforementioned steps until the

entire canvas area of both shoes are covered.

    3. Clean Up:

You may have noticed that your lace hole

are covered with glue and glitter. Take an

acetone dipped q-tip and use it to wipe of

excess glue and glitter from the lac

    holes.

Remove masking tape from soles. Let dry

for about 15-20 minutes to let the gluset. (This might be a good time to go wash

    those laces!)

    4. FinishSpray a layer or two of clear polyurethane

to really set the glue in place. Let dry for

30 minutes. Re-lace your shoes with your

    clean laces.

Youre ready to show off your re-vamped

    shoes to your friends!

Dating back to Greekand Roman cultures, tunics have beenaround for centuries.Having never gone outof style, tunics havesimply undergone a se-ries of style transforma-tions. Today, tunics can be found in almost

every color and patternyou can think of. Tunicsare effortlessly chic andare a great addition toany wardrobe.

Modern tunics are gen-erally made fromlighter materials andare cut so that theyfloat away from the

body; this is one reasonso many women lovethem. Tunics are greatat hiding any areas the wearer may be uncom-fortable with; on thedownside, they oftenhide a womans curves. To remedy that issue, tunics are most fre-quently paired with leg-gings or tights. This works well because tu-nics add volume to anoutfit while leggingscreate a slimmer sil-houette; the two pieces balance out one an-other. Fortunately, tu-nics are versatile piecesthat can be paired withmuch more than leg-gings.

Here are two easy stylefixes that can transform your tunic into a moretailored statementpiece:

The first way to trans-form your tunic is tosimply tuck it in. Tuck-ing in a tunic removes

Style trends come and go, but if you flip through old magazines, you'll often see that be

rends have a tendency to repeat themselves. However, when attempting to bring old fashnto new looks, it's important to modernize.

Bring back seriously old school glamour with an Egyptian inspired look. Cleopatra was not on amazing ruler of Egypt, but she was a super hot queen who seduced many of the great rule

her time. To emulate this magnificent lady's style, look no further than the modern day hiheadband and golden arm bangles. Combine these two with winged eyeliner and you've got yelf a look that surpasses the ages and steals the heart of rich and famous men everywhere.

    Word of the Month:Twitterpated

No, twitterpated doesnt refer to someone whos addicted

to that one social media website that refers to birds and

their chirping sounds. But it sounds quite silly which is

why twitterpated is the CARBON Word of the Month.

Twitterpated is an adjective that is described as confusion

    from affection or infatuation.

    Use in a CARBON sentence:

The young southern belle was twitterpated with her

feelings regarding her fixation on two different

    southern gentlemen.

YOU COMPLETE ME = BIG NO-NO!

I'm not one to boo re-lationships. I love rela-tionships. They arelearning experiences in

life and they teach youa lot about yourself. However, I am highlyopposed to all consum-ing relationships thatcompletely take overyour life, causing you

    to change who you are.

Oftentimes in relation-ships, you and megets replaced with"we." I call this the"Runaway Bride Syn-drome," after the 1999movie starring JulieRoberts. In the movie,

Roberts plays a charac-ter who jumps fromone relationship to an-other without ever giv-ing herself the chanceto figure out who she

is. She doesn't evenknow what her favoritestyle of eggs are be-cause she always fol-lows along with what-ever kind of eggs theman she's dating likes.

I've seen this kind of behavior often infriends. Friends thatdidn't like basketballbefore are all of a sud-den big fans becausetheir boyfriend likes it.

Friends that were rela-tively tame becameparty animals becausetheir boyfriend loves todrink, etc...

I've seen these girlschange themselves for

the man they were dat-ing because they be-lieve that a guy will want to keep heraround if she likes allthe same things ashim. Then, when therelationship doesn't work out, the girl no

longer has an interestin those things andreally doesn't knowwhat she's like. This is bad territory becauserelationships are about

taking one whole pson and putting th with another wperson and see what comes o When trying to cplete yourself wanother person, yonot giving yourselchance to figure who you really are ultimately won't efind what you trneed in a partner. Ydon't need to have

the same interestssomeone in order them to like yObviously its imptant to have a things in commonorder to have somthing to talk about,

it's also crucial to hyour own interests t

If you see yourfalling into this kindpattern, take a s back and reeva what you really wand enjoy in life. D

change yourself foperson because othey're gone, a paryou is gone too.

Poz and InfeKt: Last time we performed was a

a show. You know- with go-go dancers and a

lot more lunacy. But it was still fun, we

played our older classic songs rather than

    the new, new material.

CM: How has your music evolved since start-

    ing your recent project?

Poz and InfeKt: We realized that more people

go to club clubs rather than hip hop clubs

so we got more clubby cause thats where

    Jacie,

It sounds to me like Meadows is getting

to about that age Meadows is probably

at a point in her life where she feels the

most curious but is still a little unsure of

herself. I felt the same way when I was

about two too. She may be wonderingabout the outside because its so unfa-

miliar, or even to get closer to that nice

    warm sun.

Even though many cats like to sunbathe

on the windowsill, there is nothing like

the fresh outside air to go with it. It just

feels so relaxing! Hil and Brit usually let

me go out onto the patio while theyrehome. The wall is too high for me so its

    a safe place.

On the patio, I like to explore by rolling

around on the cool tile and sniffing the

plants. I also like lounging in the shade

or sun. I feel safe on the patio because

there is nothing else out there besides

    me and the small wilderness.

So, when Meadows waits for you at the

door, she is obviously so happy to see

you! When she runs outside, she may

just want to see where youve been. Al-

though if trying to run outside is new for

her then, its time to have an adventure!

I know the outside world can be so scary

but it just takes baby steps. I am still alittle afraid of the outside world myself,

but I know its possible to get used to

because of the Lion cat that lives next

door. Shes outside all the time. (She

    must be fearless!)

Step 1: When you get home and Mead-

ows is waiting for you, it is time to start

the training! This is the best time to

practice because she is ready to go out-side.

Step 2: Let Meadows come to the door

or outside porch on her own. She might

get freaked out if you make her go far-

    ther before shes ready.

Step3: Keep an eye on Meadows and

watch to for dogs and cars while shelooks around. Encourage or coax her to

step farther out into the wild. . Meadows

will most likely not chase after anything.

Everything is still unknown so far to us

cats. (Chasing is what dogs do!)

Step 4: Whatever you do dont pick her

up! When Im outside, I am almost in a

zone I guess you could say. Its impor-tant for us to figure things out gradually

while getting farther and farther from

    the front door.

Step 5: Try to let Meadows explore

when you have the time so that she has

knowledge of the outside world. She

might like it a lot or she might prefer it

    inside.
