PRINCIPAL’S REPORT A message from Mrs Moss

What a fantastic day. Our very own radio station run by Year 6 called 6FM went to air for the very first time today at recess under the hall cola. The kids loved it. Our K-2 students gravitated to the music, dancing and singing along. This will be a weekly event every Friday.

Thank you to Mrs Millar for coordinating this wonderful initiative and to Year 6 for their enthusiasm and commitment.

It was brilliant to have so many parents join us for our parent information evenings. Thank you to everyone who came along. The time spent connecting with your child’s class teacher /teachers and becoming familiar with the planned 2017 learning programs was invaluable.

Thank you for all the positive comments about the Music and Technology programs that have been introduced this year. It is wonderful to hear such great feedback. All the children from Kindergarten to Year 6 are really enjoying their experiences. We are incredibly lucky to have such talented, dedicated and hardworking staff at Burraneer Bay.

Congratulations to all the children who participated in our BBPS Swimming Carnival. What an outstanding effort by all of you. It was great to see the Year 2 and Year 3 students put their hands up to swim. Thank you to the parents who volunteered to assist at the carnival and to the many parents who also encouraged the children. In this newsletter you will find a comprehensive report of the swimming results. Thank you so much to Mr Fisher for organising the carnival and to all the staff who supported him to make the carnival such a success. Thirty three of our students qualified to participate in the Cronulla Zone Carnival at Caringbah Pool on Tuesday. We look forward to hearing how our swimmers perform at this carnival. There have been many students trialing for representative sports recently. It was wonderful to receive a phone call this morning from a parent regarding the trials. Even though his son was not successful he found the experience a very positive one and thanked the school for giving him the opportunity to participate. Congratulations to Jeremos Mills–Vasas, Joel Cochran and Cameron Mackenzie who successfully trialed for the Cronulla Zone AFL Team.

Congratulations to all the Year 6 students who attended the High School Liaison Day at Cronulla High School on Tuesday. The children spent the morning at the mangroves and sand hills looking at changes in the environment and then participated in a range of “High School activities” such as Woodwork, Food Technology, Science and Computer Technology in the afternoon sessions. This initiative supports the students and aims at giving them a smooth transition to High School. It was such a great day.

Year 6 students will receive an Expression of Interest Form regarding High School Placement for 2018 next week. These forms are to be returned to BBPS (not the High School) on or before March 17th . A reminder that the principals from Woolooware high and Cronulla High are holding and Information Night for all our Year 6 parents in our school library next Monday - February 27th.

We are continually working on better solutions for student safety at our school. If you have a concern or an issue that needs to be addressed, please do not approach a child or children in the playground or on the street as they make their way to and from school. A child can feel very threatened when approached by an adult. If this happens we are required to apply the Inclosed Lands Act to ensure student safety. If you have an issue, please contact the school office and make an appointment to see me.

Our Staff Car Park is still causing a lot of concern. The staff car parks are for staff use and delivery vehicles only. On two occasions this week staff have been verbally abused by parents accessing the Car Park. The Car Park is not a walk way for pedestrians and is not to be accessed by anyone other than staff. Drivers of vehicles who park in the Staff Car Park will be asked to move their vehicle. The disabled car spaces are only to be used by drivers with a Disabled Permit.

Fruit. This could be: • a whole piece of fruit (e.g. apple)

The Creative Arts Camp is offered to children who are in the Senior Choir, Senior Band, Year 6 Dance and Extension Dance. The Creative Arts Camp was a huge success in previous years and this year’s camp will be even bigger and better with 2 full days of intensive workshops. The Creative Arts Camp is a wonderful experience for the children. It aims at increasing the enthusiasm of the children, developing their confidence and fostering in them a passion for the Creative Arts. The camp provides the children with the opportunity to excel in singing, dancing and playing. The children participate in a range of workshops and activities that enhance both their musical and performance skills. The Creative Arts Camp will be held from Monday March 20th-Tuesday March 21st, 2017 at The Tops Conference Centre, at Stanwell Tops. The camp will conclude on the Tuesday evening with a combined concert for parents that will begin at 7pm. An issue that was brought to my attention this week is the School Gates. To ensure the children’s safety, the school gates are locked each day at 9:20am. They are reopened at 3:00pm. The school can only be accessed by the front office when the gates are locked. When the K-2 assembly is on, the gates will be opened at 2:15pm. We ask that you wait until the gates are fully opened before you come into the playground. We had a number of near misses last week with the office ladies and prams.

While we do love having the pre-schoolers visit our school, they do need to be under your watchful eye at all times. For safety reasons, pre-schoolers are not allowed to play on the adventure playground equipment in the Kindergarten play area. This area is to be used by our Kindergarten students during school hours only. It is not to be used as an after-hours play area.

Our K-2 Assemblies are just wonderful. The smiles and excitement on the children’s faces as they sing their songs or receive their certificates are a sight to behold. This Wednesday K-2 will have its first assembly for the year. It will be held in the school hall. The K-2 Assembly commences at 2:20 pm and parents and friends are invited to attend. Each class has a turn at running the assembly. Parents and friends must wait until the Burraneer Bay Rd gates are opened before entering on to the school site. We ask that if toddlers are attending the assembly that they sit quietly, as the loud volume can be very distracting for the K- 2 children who are attempting to listen attentively.

Our Easter Hat Parade will be on Thursday 6th April ,2017 at 9:30 am in the school hall. All children are encouraged to wear a hat. The hat needs to be made at home and brought in on the morning of the parade. We ask that it is not brought in before the day as we have limited space. We do advice that the hat is fastened so that it does not fall off during the parade. We also ask that chocolate eggs are not placed on the hat, this is to make sure they do not melt if it is a hot day. We hope you enjoy making the hat with your child and are able to join us at the Easter Hat Parade.

ABSENCES Staff are concerned by the number of students in their classes who arrive late every day, without a valid explanation. Without a valid explanation the absence is recorded as unjustified. Swimming lessons and tutoring are not valid reasons for your child to be late to school. There are strict guidelines we have to follow and late arrivals must be recorded as a partial absence and are referred on to the Department of Education.

IMPORTANT REMINDERS – ( REPEATED) We have a number of important procedures in place at BBPS. Please read the following reminders. We all need to work together to ensure that our students are safe.

NUTS & NUT PRODUCTS A number of students in our school have severe allergies . They are in danger of having an extreme anaphylactic reaction if they are exposed to nuts and nut products of any kind. Students are reminded not to bring nuts and nut products of any kind to school. When packing lunches or baking birthday cakes (that you wish to share with other students) , PLEASE ensure that you purchase products that contain NO TRACES OF NUTS. STUDENT ARRIVAL Playground supervision starts at 8.40 am. Staff is not rostered on duty in the playground prior to 8.40am. We encourage you not to send your Children to school before 8.40am because they not supervised. Teachers are rostered to supervise students from 8.40am until classes commence. All classes line up in a designated area each morning when the bell goes at 9.10am. Music is played as a signal to parents to let them know that it is time to leave the playground. So that the children can hear their teachers’ instructions and commence classes quickly, all parents are encouraged to start leaving the playground when the music starts. The teacher on playground duty wears a fluoro jacket so they can be easily identified by students. Children are not to put their bags away or enter the classrooms before the 9:10 bell.

SCHOOL SECURITY/SAFETY AND SIGNING IN Our school hours are from 9:10am until 3:10pm. There have been a number of times this week when a large number of students came late to school. If a child is late for school a parent must sign them in. This is a departmental directive. Even if you are just a few minutes late please do not send your child / children into the school on their own. Parents must sign a late slip for a student who is late to school – students are not allowed to sign their late slip. The late arrivals book is in the office foyer. Please fill out the late arrivals slip and give it to your child so that he / she can hand it to their class teacher. Canteen volunteers sign in at the canteen and parents assisting with Reading for Success sign in at the Reading Support Room.

MESSAGES TO STUDENTS We understand that circumstances can change and at some time you may need to phone the school to leave an urgent message for your child. Their safety is our main concern and it is not always easy to get a message to a child at the end of the school day. Children are often out of their classrooms and are not contactable on the PA system – making it impossible to always get the message to the child before the final bell. To ensure your child is safe and to avoid any worry, please ring the school office with urgent messages before 2:30pm. We are unable to put phone calls through to students during class time as it is disruptive for the entire class. If you need to speak to your child’s class teacher, please ring the school office and they will leave a message. EARLY DEPARTURES FROM SCHOOL Staff are concerned by the number of students in their classes who are being picked up from school early. There are strict guidelines we have to follow and early departures must be recorded as a partial absence and are referred on to the Department of Education. The school day does not finish until 3:10pm and when leaving early, students are missing important learning opportunities and key instructions. Announcements are often made after lunch and in a school of this size the timetable is not flexible. Please refrain from making appointments before the end of the school day. UPDATING PERSONAL INFORMATION REMINDER Information about allergies, medical conditions such as asthma and diabetes and other health care related issues (including prior conditions such as medical procedures in the last 12 months) should be provided to the school by parents. It is important that you let us know if your child’s health care needs change or if a new health condition develops. Please provide this information in writing to the principal. This will greatly assist our school in planning to support your child’s health and wellbeing. Please also remember to notify staff in the school office of any changes to your contact details or to the contact details of other people nominated as emergency contacts. 10 0333 Fax 02 9710 0265

Welcome back to a new school year! Sutherland Shire Council Parking Officers will be out at all schools again this year helping you to ensure that all children get to and from school safely.

DROPPING OFF OR PICKING UP YOUR CHILDREN

Schools are areas where there is a lot of interaction between cars and pedestrians: your children. Children are small, hard to see, behave unpredictably, and are extremely vulnerable.

Their lack of road experience means it is difficult for them to judge dangerous situations. Boys are twice as likely to be involved in pedestrian accidents as girls and children 10-14 years have the highest rate of child pedestrian casualties (RMS).

Children up to eight years old should hold an adult's hand on the footpath, in the carpark or when crossing the road.

Children up to ten years old should be actively supervised around traffic and should hold an adult's hand when crossing the road.

Take the time to make sure your children are aware of, understand and follow traffic safety regulations when they are walking.

HAVE A PLAN

Plan with your son or daughter how you will collect them. When and where will you be after school? Where should they wait? Make sure they know not to try and get into your vehicle while it is still in traffic, even if you are stopped; they should wait until you have parked at the side of the road.

Plan to arrive AFTER the school bell goes in the afternoon, so your children are ready and waiting for you and you are not blocking traffic.

NO PARKING ZONES

A No Parking zone is a pick up and drop off area: you can stop here for a maximum of two minutes to drop off or pick up passengers and must remain within three metres of the vehicle. When parents park in a No Parking zone for longer than two minutes they prevent other parents from stopping to drop off or pick up their children, creating frustration and dangerous situations. If you arrive before the school bell and block the pickup areas, you risk a fine.

Parking offences in school zones carry heavier fines and loss of demerit points. Sutherland Shire Council makes no apologies for fining drivers who break the law around schools and in school zones.

SOME SIGNS YOU WILL SEE AROUND YOUR SCHOOL

NO PARKING What does it mean?

You CAN stop in a NO PARKING zone for a maximum of two minutes to drop off and pick up passengers. You must stay within three metres of your vehicle at all times.

Why is it there?

To provide a safe place for older children to be set down and picked up without endangering other children

NO STOPPING What does it mean?

You CANNOT stop in this area FOR ANY REASON.

Why is it there? To keep sight lines clear for drivers AND children so both have more time to avoid crashes.

BUS ZONE What does it mean?

You must NOT stop or park in a bus zone unless you are driving a bus.

Why is it there? To provide a safe place for large buses to set down and pick up. Cars parking in bus zones put lives at risk by forcing buses out of 'their' safety zone

COMMUNICATION 2017

Burraneer Bay Public School is a large school that offers the students many vibrant and positive learning experiences. A wide range of activities occur every day. To ensure the smooth running of our school we ask that parents and carers read all the notes that are sent out electronically and as a hardcopy, attend to ‘due by’ dates and sign the relevant forms (and return them as hard copies rather than scan). Our students become very anxious when this does not happen.

BBPS sends information to the community in a number of ways.

The School Website is one of our sources of information and can be accessed by following the link to http://www.burraneerb-p.schools.nsw.edu.au The content on the website changes often.

The School Newsletter is sent electronically to all families who subscribe. To subscribe ,you simply need to complete the online subscription form on the school website (follow the ‘Newsletters’ tab). All Newsletters are uploaded to the website (simply follow the ‘Newsletters’ tab on the website). The calendar is also updated on the website regularly and includes information about school activities. The Term Calendar is also sent to families electronically. There is also a link on the website that allows you to make online POP payments.

The Before and After School Centre publishes a newsletter from time to time. These are sent electronically via the E-News App.

The P&C Association sends the P&C Minutes from its monthly meeting and the monthly agenda electronically via the E-News App.

School E-News: The Newsletter, school alerts, notifications, attachments and a variety of

notes as well as P&C notices are sent electronically via E-News. Please subscribe to School E-News at http://school.schoolenews.com.au/burraneerbayps/. 2017 SWIMMING CARNIVAL On Thursday, 9th February, our school held its annual Swimming Carnival at Sans Souci Leisure Centre. It was a positive and successful day, with fantastic participation shown by the students. I would like to thank the many parents who volunteered on the day (and those who offered to) to assist with the smooth running of the carnival. Also a BIG thank you to the staff for their efforts in helping make the day a wonderful experience for our students. To those who came along to support the students of BBPS your presence was greatly appreciated. Congratulations to the winning house on the day which was Phillip. The results from the day are attached to this newsletter. Congratulations to all students who competed in their first Swimming Carnival and well done to those who competed in their last. Good luck to those students who will continue on to represent our school at the Cronulla Zone Championships to be held at Caringbah

Leisure Centre on Tuesday 28th February.

WHAT’S HOT IN THE

S.T.E.A.M.

ROOM SCIENCE . TECHNOLOGY. ENGINEERING. ARTS. MATHS

Wow! What an exciting start to the year we have had in the S.T.E.A.M. Room! All students from K-6 have enjoyed using our brand new equipment in our purpose built 21st Century Learning Space, funded by our incredible P & C. There are currently 32 student devices, a Promethean ActivPanel and a large green screen with lighting for Chroma Key activities.

Mrs Yard takes all K-6 students for a 40 min lesson each week in the S.T.E.A.M. Room. (Yrs 5 & 6 have 1hr lessons). Lessons are based on our BBPS Technology Scope & Sequence and are linked to classroom learning areas. Students utilise a range of online and inbuilt software to develop their understanding of ICT and ignite their creative spark.

Programs include:

GSuite (Google Apps for Education)

Adobe Suite

Microsoft Office 365

Tux Paint

Scratch (All students will experiment with coding this year during S.T.E.A.M Room time)

Students regularly access ‘Typing Club’ to assist with their touch typing skills. Our Cyber Safety Program K-6 is taught and reinforced in all S.T.E.A.M. Room lessons.

CODING CLUB Coding club commenced on Thursday first half lunch for Years 5 & 6. Student response was phenomenal. Students will be using the ‘Hour of Code’ website as an introduction to coding. A huge thank you to Ethan (Yr 5) for his assistance in setting up our club!! He even designed a logo & badges for club members! In Term 2, Coding Club will run an additional day for Years 3 & 4 students.

CHESS CLUB Chess Club will run on Monday 1st Half lunch in the S.T.E.A.M. room. All students in years 3-6 are welcome to attend. The club caters for all chess abilities. _________________________________________________________________________________________
