The long-running dispute between Brighton and Hove City Council and the union representing the city’s bin lorry drivers is edging towards a resolution.

Both sides met earlier this week for fresh talks, with the council tabling a new proposal to the GMB leaders on Wednesday - when it was reported the two sides were “centimetres apart”.

Last night (Thursday), Mark Turner, GMB secretary, told Brighton & Hove Independent that the difference was now a matter of millimetres.

He said: “We are meeting our members tomorrow (Friday) to put the council’s current proposals to them.

“These proposals are millimetres away from us being able to recommend them to our members.

“We are likely to conduct a ballot of our members throughout

next week regarding acceptance of the proposals or not and will deliver a decision on Thursday (November 6), as this is a very important issue for our members and obviously, the public.”

The dispute between the union and the council has led to a series of strikes, leaving residents frustrated as the lack of resolution meant rubbish often went uncollected.

The GMB has not yet set another strike date and is hopeful the two sides can finally reach an agreement, although all options will be discussed at the meeting today (Friday).

Refuse lorry drivers want the council to recognise the additional qualifications and skill required to drive their sizeable vehicles and reward them with a pay rise.

Brighton and Hove City Council, meanwhile, is struggling to balance its books amid substantial cuts in funding from central government which run into the tens of millions of pounds.

I’ve spent the last few years enjoying politics from the sidelines. Yes, I have been an activist, but I haven’t been standing for election or trying to persuade people of my abilities and experience.

I had thought those days were well behind me. After all, I had spent many happy years in my 20s and 30s as a local councillor and parliamentary candidate. But a few chance conversations in August changed my mind and made be start thinking seriously about throwing my hat in the ring.

Little did I realise how this single act would impact on people’s opinions of me and their assumptions of both me and my motives.

The suggestion I’ve been "parachuted" into the ward doesn’t stack up. Nor was I approached to put myself forward by some shadowy insiders.

Being the only candidate at a

selection meeting doesn’t make it any less intimidating. Having to endure my speech and answers to their questions probably wasn’t easy on the Labour Party members who attended either.

I simply thought that I should take the brave step of putting across Labour’s case for the future of our city directly and was willing to take responsibility for making sure that if successful those policies are put into action.

In a city where recycling rates are falling under an e nv i r o n m e n t a l ly - f r i e n d ly administration, where privatisation is increasingly being suggested and used as the first line of attack on costs (rather than the last option), and where important long-term decisions are being evaded to leave for the next city administration I want to offer a better vision.

Better access to housing, a focus on delivering the basic council services effectively, a new school to meet the challenges of population changes, balanced and sustainable transport policies that don’t leave residents

feeling that their wards have been ignored. These are just some of the policies I’d like to see every resident benefiting from.

Despite all the speculation and discontent, I’m still incredibly excited to have been chosen. Labour have a fantastic team and fantastic message to share about the future direction our city can take.

Why I am standing for Labourin Moulsecoomb and Bevendean

Lido to reopenSaltdean Lido will reopen next summer after the team behind ambitious plans to restore it to its former glories was awarded £440,000 by a government investment scheme. The iconic art deco attraction will initially reopen at weekends and during school holidays from June next year. Once the summer is over it will close again while plans are finalised for work to revamp the once-popular site.Around £9 million of funding is needed for the eventual work.

Planning

Eight-storey blockBrighton and Hove City Council has approved plans for an eight-storey block of flats to be built in Hove. The council’s planning committee granted permission for the scheme, which will see the Hyde Housing office in Davigdor Road, Hove, demolished. In its place will be built 68 flats and ground floor office space of around 700 square metres Forty per cent of the flats will be affordable housing.

Award

PinkNews prizeCaroline Lucas, the MP for Brighton Pavilion, has been named MP of the Year at an awards organised by LGBT publication PinkNews. The awards, now in their second year, were launched by PinkNews in order to celebrate the contributions of politicians, businesses and community groups involved in improving the lives of the LGBT community both here in the UK and overseas.Ms Lucas was among five MPs shortlisted but the Green MP came out as overall winner.

A 13-year-old student from Hove Park School got the chance to interview Hollywood’s Steve Carell at the BFI London Film Festival. Lily Sitzia spoke to the star about his new film Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day, in her role as a junior reporter for education charity Into Film - which helps young people to learn about the film industry.Lily said: “I was a bit nervous to start off with, but then I realised he was really nice - so it was really good."

Circulation of The Argusfalls below 5,000 in city

The Argus newspaper sells fewer than 5,000 copies each issue in Brighton and Hove - according to the latest data from JICREG (Joint Industry Committee for Regional Media Research).

In Brighton, it sells 3,002 copies; in Hove, it sells 1,867.

The sales in the city - the lowest in the newspaper's 134-year

history - represent a remarkable fall of 25% in just 12 months.

This week’s figures for the countywide newspaper are based on total circulation figures of 14,370 across Sussex for the six months from January this year, validated by ABC (Audit Bureau of Circulations).

In the month of June, however, total circulation fell to 13,746, suggesting sales in Brighton and Hove could now be less than 4,500.

Daniel Yates@danieljyates

Daniel Yates was selected on Saturday, October 25, to be Labour Party candidate for Moulsecoomb and Bevendean to replace Councillor Leigh Farrow, who has been banned from standing again for the party in the city council elections next May. Mr Yates, 41, was the only person to put his name forward; the selection meeting was attended by only two members of the local branch party, which has been suspended because it supported Cllr Farrow; six members of the executive committee of Brighton and Hove District Labour Party also attended the selection meeting.

More than 800 of the lowest-paid people working in our city have seen a pay rise, as a result of the Living Wage Commission we established three years ago.

The commission looked into how the Living Wage could be introduced into Brighton and Hove, to ensure that the lowest-paid workers earn enough to live on in our city.

We - the council - committed to the Living Wage and supported a citywide campaign to encourage employers to raise the wages of their lowest-paid employees, too.

I am proud

to say that the Brighton and Hove Living Wage campaign is one of the most successful in the country. It is the UK’s only business-led campaign and there are now 152 local employers taking part.

The Living Wage is an idea that campaigners have pushed for some years - and is one that has really gained traction more recently.

Too many people in our communities are being paid poverty wages that don't leave them enough money to live on.

There is, of course, the minimum wage, which about one in five of our residents are earning. But the reality is that it simply does not keep up with the soaring costs of living. And we all pick up the bill for low pay, with the welfare system topping

up people's incomes so that they can survive.

Paying employees more is not only the right thing to do and saves the public purse money, but also is good for business, too. Staff members feel more valued, are more likely to stay at an organisation, work better, and morale

is higher. Local

people also have more money in their pockets to spend in local shops, which boosts the local economy.

A growing number of local employers are showing that it is possible to reward employees and build a successful company at the same time, and I look

forward seeing more sign up in this National Living Wage Week.

I do so love a good diary. Yes, of course, I keep one - if only

to be a smart Aleck and quote Oscar Wilde about having something sensational to read on a train.

But I have a terrible weakness for books in diary form, too. They are a joy to read. Fact or fiction, it doesn’t really matter to me.

There are two diaries here running concurrently: 40-year-old Jo, a war photographer who has inherited her great aunt's flat in Brighton and her great grandmother Elizabeth’s account of her life serving as a nurse in Brighton Pavilion in 1915.

The story unfolds in a gentle way and is utterly charming, but we are gradually drawn in to the horrors of modern terrorism in Kabul and the

truly awful trench warfare of the First World War.

Jo has many problems, including post-traumatic stress disorder and, when she arrives at her inherited flat, she is numb and in need of some rest. The discovery of Elizabeth’s diary, however, is a welcome distraction from her woes.

There are some glorious descriptions of Brighton Pavilion transformed into a hospital for wounded Indian soldiers who were brought there from France, and the heartbreak that it caused Elizabeth in those unenlightened days is poignant and touching.

The modern-day descriptions of the gay bars in Kemptown, the seafront, and the busy streets of Kemptown are fascinating, too.

Don’t forget the old adage: Keep a diary, and one day it will keep you.

The Book DoctorHave yourself a scary little Christmas in aid of charity

The second annual Brighton Ghost Stories for Christmas charity fundraiser will be performed at Brighton Pavilion on Saturday, December 6, in aid of RISE, the domestic violence charity.

It isn’t widely known, but the tradition of gathering round the fire at Christmas to tell ghost stories predates Charles Dickens and A Christmas Carol; in fact, ghost stories were once as much a part of Christmas as the turkey and the tree is today.

And, later this year, Blind Piper Productions will be reviving this tradition at Brighton Royal Pavilion with an evening of mulled cider and performances of classic ghost stories by MR James, EF Benson and Mary Eleanor Wilkins Freeman.

The event has been sponsored by Brighton & Hove Bus and Coach Company and proceeds from the event will be donated to RISE, which provides help with refuge accommodation, resettlement, crisis appointments, helpline, counselling, housing, legal and financial advice, solicitors appointments, support

groups, play therapy, 1-to-1 support and training and preventative education.

Craig Johnson, producer and performer, explained: “The idea behind the project is that each year we will raise money for a different local charity.

“Last year we raised money for The Clocktower Sanctuary, which is a fantastic organisation supporting young homeless people in Brighton and Hove.

“This year we are raising funds for RISE which does really incredible work. Domestic violence is an issue that affects many people and takes a number of forms, and I am very proud that we can do our part to raise funds and awareness for such an important organisation and cause.

“I was inspired by the BBC Christmas ghost stories that used to be on television when I was a child. I remember seeing The Signalman when I was very small and it left a lasting impression on me. In more recent years I used to hold annual ghost stories for Christmas at my house, where I would serve Christmas food and drink and everyone would bring a ghost story. Everyone really enjoyed it and I

thought it would be something that could be expanded and run as a charity fundraising event.

“As adults it is very rare that we are read to - we read stories to children, but it isn't often that someone reads to us. There is something very comforting about being told stories – even if the stories are in this case unnerving.

“I am really excited that this year we are performing at the Brighton Royal Pavilion and support has been quite incredible.”

As well as the ghost stories there will also be a prize draw included in the cost of a ticket.

But, of course, it is the stories which are driving the event. Mr Johnson added: “I think the stories we have for this year’s show are fantastic and cover a very broad spectrum of the ghost story genre.

"Audiences will be taken on a journey that encompasses humour, sadness, tragedy and out and out horror.”

Ghost Stories for Christmas is being performed at Brighton Royal Pavilion on Saturday, December 6. Tickets are £20/£15 concessions and are available from www.brownpapertickets.com.

Seven Dials should be put backto how it was in the first place

In these austere times, it is the duty of every local authority to lead by example and to ensure the hard-earned cash of council-taxpayers is

spent wisely. As I travel around our city, I see

little evidence of this happening and it is obvious our administration is still living in an ideological bubble.

Scheme after lunatic scheme has been forced upon us, to the point where the city we all live in and

love is barely recognisable. Many other madcap schemes are

in the pipeline and one can only hope that very few more ideas are forced upon us before the next administration are voted in.

In the ideological world of our Green administration, the scheme on the drawing board must have

looked really appealing - prior to it being acted out at the Seven Dials roundabout.

At quiet times, when there are half a dozen cars in view, I am the first to agree the aesthetics are much improved. Take a look, however, at peak times and it is a very different story. It is absolute chaos.

The new layout is unable to take the volume of traffic and, if ever there was a case for reverting to the original and accepting mistakes have been made, this is it.

The whole exercise has been a huge waste of public funds and the same people are proposing to mess with the Aquarium roundabout, as it was known when it was constructed in 1925. This was one of the first proper roundabouts in the country; it has served us well for the past 89 years and now there is talk of changing it by the very same people who have messed up at the Seven Dials.

Let's hope their time runs out before they are able to ruin this piece of our history in their attempt to move all of us along into dream world.

I have long wondered why common sense is in such short supply when it comes to council-backed grandiose schemes.

It is surely more important to get the basics right. We all try to impress on our offspring that we should look after the pennies. Therefore, why in real life do we struggle getting our elected representatives to suppress their

egos and follow the same basic principals?

A case in point would be our footpath alongside Hove Lawns in the Kingsway. Many excellent events are held there on the lawns throughout the year, with the permission of our council. Apparently, however, the setting up of the events and the dismantling is unsupervised, because it is difficult to find a paving slab in the

entire length of footpath that is not damaged.

Surely it is not beyond the wit of our council officers to appoint stewards at the expense of event organisers to

ensure all vehicles access and exit via one point. Why should it be the council-taxpayer who picks up needless bills for repairs. If we have money to spare, then deal with the issue a different way and place bollards along the entire length between the cycle track and footpath - thus pleasing both cyclists and pedestrians alike. It really isn't rocket science.

Undoubtedly, the new arches by the I360 site are a vast improvement on what was there before. But please, let's not continually pat ourselves on the back while ignoring the shabby street furniture: the dire seafront toilet situation (with the exception of the new arches facility); The Beirut-look derelict phone boxes; and the urine-infested underpasses.

These are basics and should be dealt with as priority, if we have any money available at all.

Grandiose schemes should be shelved until we can afford

them. All major schemes affecting the lives of our citizens should be subject to referendum and not simply forced upon us.

There is no doubt change can sometimes be for the better. But people need consulting before our monies are used for schemes that change all our lives for good. My view is that we will live to regret many of the decisions that have been made in recent years, especially as things get tougher in times to come.

Living Wage Week looking to build on its successes

The campaign to encourage local employers to pay their staff a living wage is being celebrated with a week-long awareness drive.

The Living Wage Week 2014 gets underway on Monday (November 3) and runs until Saturday.

Updated living wage hourly rates will be released on Monday with the suggested total likely to increase from the current living wage rate of £7.65. The revised total is published each November, with firms given until April 1 to implement the new rate.

Locally the business-led campaign, which is supported by Brighton & Hove Independent, has been a success, with 152 employers across the city signing up to the campaign, resulting in more than 2,000 salaries being raised as a result.

There have been some notable businesses signing up ahead of Living Wage Week, including web designers and developers Madison Solutions, healthcare company Kare Plus, boutique B&B Brighton Pavilions Guest House, freeholders Kingsway Court Freeholders Ltd, Hilton Sharp and Clarke Chartered Accountants and the charity The FED - Centre for Independent Living.

Steve Courtney and Peter Howey, owners of Brighton Pavilions Guest House, said: “Paying a living wage to our employees at Brighton Pavilions is really important to us.

“We believe our staff will be happier, more productive and will deliver even better customer service to our guests. It’s simply the right thing to do.”

Launched in 2012, the Brighton and Hove Living Wage Campaign has been one of the most successful in the UK. The living wage rate is set independently

and updated annually, with calculations made according to the basic cost of living in the UK. The final figure is the amount considered to allow a person to live a decent life, rather than just survive.

The scheme has received significant backing from local politicians.

Caroline Lucas, Green Party MP for Brighton Pavilion, said: “I’m immensely proud of the many employers in Brighton and Hove who subscribe to the Living Wage Campaign.

“They show that, even when times are tough, it’s possible to

pay fairly and tackle inequality while maintaining economic competitiveness.

“Those businesses reflect values that have become synonymous with our city - that fierce sense of fairness, of working for the common good: that’s Brighton and Hove.”

It was a sentiment share by Mike Weatherley, Conservative MP for Hove and Portslade. He said: “It is very hard not to support the aims of the Living Wage campaign. Pointing out to employers that a certain level of wage is likely to lead to staff staying on and keeping the campaign voluntary should satisfy both employers and employees. I am delighted to add my support.”

And it is not just politicians backing the campaign. Alex Knutsen of UNISON, which has been working closely with the city’s chamber of commerce, has also been vocal in the union’s support.

They said: "Brighton and Hove UNISON is very pleased to be working with the chamber and optimistic that in the next 12 months we will be able to double the number of businesses in the city whose staff receive the living wage.

“We’d like to encourage another 20 businesses, charities, social enterprises or public sector organisations to sign up to the campaign during Living Wage Week.”

For more information, follow the campaign on Twitter @BHLivingWage or like it on Facebook to hear about events going on during Living Wage Week. Alternatively, visit: www.livingwagebrighton.co.uk or email: [email protected].

A Week in the City

Finances

Free advice service

A new free money advice service for residents backed by Brighton and Hove City Council has been launched. Moneyworks is designed to help the most vulnerable in the city deal with debt, manage money better, and avoid unscrupulous loan sharks. Residents can get advice on a whole range of money issues by calling the Moneyworks Advice Line on 01273 809288 between 10am and 3pm Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, 5pm to 8pm on Wednesday, or 10am to 1pm on Friday.

Education

Westminster visit

Supply teachers from Brighton and Hove went to Westminster on Tuesday to lobby MPs about what they see as a waste of public money and to complain about cuts in pay and conditions. Union leaders say schools are paying commercial recruitment agencies millions of pounds a year to hire supply teachers. The closure of local authority supply pools has, they argue, led to an increase in the use of agencies, which charge schools up to £1,000 per week per teacher.

Halloween

City is stingiest

A nationwide survey has found Brighton and Hove is the stingiest city when it comes to handing out Halloween goodies.According to the research conducted by www.fancydressball.co.uk, the city was equal tightest with Gloucester. Just 11% of parents in Brighton and Hove were happy to give money to Halloweeners compared to a national average of 43%. Sweets were the most popular treat, with money second and fruit surprising popular, with 22% of parents saying they would give fruit out.

Charity

Recycle goods for AITC

Brighton and Hove Albion’s charitable arm Albion in the Community (AITC) is calling on schools and businesses to help its

disability project by clearing out unwanted and unused goods for recycling.

The fundraising initiative has been set up by Reform Solutions, a family run courier, and the recycling scheme enables schools, colleges or workplaces to donate unwanted goods – with any funds raised from the recycling used to support AITC’s work helping disabled young people take part in sport.

The project was the idea of Reform Solutions managing director Marc Richardson, who has been a committed supporter of AITC for more than five years.

He said: “I wanted to do more to support this great local cause and I realised that by making use of my business, I could collect and recycle goods to raise funds.

“It’s really easy, as we provide the

bags and collect them when they’re full. I hope everyone will get behind this scheme - the more bags that are donated, the more lives we can change. It’s as simple as that.”

AITC’s Gary Townsend said: “We’re really grateful to Reform Solutions for supporting our disability sports programme.

“This is a great way for people to raise funds without costing a penny. And it’s a good excuse to clear out the clutter too.”

Any good quality clothes, hats, pairs of shoes, belts, bags, DVDs and CDs will be accepted.

This scheme is only running for a limited period. Anyone who would like to find out more should contact Reform Solutions to request empty recycling bags by emailing [email protected] or calling Marc Richardson on 01273 814777.

Charity

Yoga fundraising fun

A group of yoga enthusiasts have raised more than £3,000 to help children living in some of the poorest slums in India after completing a grueling 12-hour hot yogathon.

The 15 fundraisers sweated it out in temperatures of 98F to raise money for OSCAR (Organisation for Social Change and Responsibility), a football and education charity, which works to improve the lives of young people living in the slum communities of Mumbai and Goa.

The charity, which has a UK arm based in Brighton, runs programmes that use football to steer young people away from gambling, alcohol and drug abuse. The programmes provide classes in subjects such as English, maths and Hindi as part of the football sessions that encourage boys and girls to continue their education.

Family and friends of those taking part joined a special

laughing yoga session towards the end of the yogathon to show their support.

Daniel Catt was one of those who took part in the event held at the Dynamic Yoga Studios in Hove. The 29 year-old from Patcham took up yoga after a back injury at work saw him rushed to hospital for an emergency operation on Boxing Day 2012.

He said: “The consultant at the hospital told me that I had been close to being paralysed.

“I had lost most of the feeling in my legs and the prognosis wasn't good. Taking up yoga was one of

the best things I have done and I would never have thought I would have been able to do something like this back then.”

Dan Lawson, from OSCAR, who organised the event, said: “It was a fantastic day and the laughter yoga session helped lift everyone’s sprits towards the end when a bit of tiredness was creeping in.

“The response has been terrific and the money raised will make a huge difference to the work we are able to do on the ground in these communities.”

The 41 year-old from Hove flies out to India this week to spend six months working for the charity on projects in Mumbai and Kerala in Goa.

You can still donate to the yogathon by visiting www.btplc.com/mydonate and searching for OSCAR India.

To learn more about OSCAR’s work visit www.oscar-india.org. Money raised from the event will also go to support the Lovey Foundation which works with underprivileged children in northern Ghana.

Politics

Against tax-dodging

Brighton and Hove has added its name to the ActionAid Towns Against Tax-dodging campaign after a successful Green motion to a council meeting. The anti-poverty charity has been asking councils across the UK to sign up and call on the government to do more to get large companies to pay their fair share towards quality public services. Councillor Leo Littman proposed a motion to sign-up to the campaign and it was approved by fellow councillors.

Sport

Skateboard scheme awardA Brighton-based skateboarding project which encourages young women to get involved in the sport has received national recognition.

The She-Shredders project was given the bronze award at the National Sportivate Project of the Year awards having previously been named as the best project in the Southeast. It beat off competition from 40 other finalists to land the bronze award.

The scheme, which is a skateboarding group for young women, is a Brighton and Hove City Council sports development project run in partnership with Brighton Youth Centre.

Lessons in skateboarding were set up at the start of 2013 to encourage teenage girls and young women in the city to gain confidence and develop skills in skateboarding.

The She Shredders now meet weekly and are trained by UK skateboarding champion Lucy Adams. Lessons have taken place across the city’s skateparks, including Woodingdean, Hove Lagoon, Brighton Youth Centre and also out at Shoreham.

Ms Adams said: “We are widely recognised as having one of the

largest female skate scenes in the UK. Other skateparks across the country have been getting in touch to ask about our development model so they can recreate something similar in their area.”

Brighton and Hove City Council sports development officer Ricardo Magee Atxukarro was instrumental in setting up and supporting the group as the project lead. And he was invited to a ceremony, organised by Sport England, at the Houses of Parliament to accept the award alongside Ms Adams on behalf of all involved.

He said: “It is been great to receive national recognition for a project that is helping inspire an increase in female skateboarding. There are some great skateparks in the city and we want to make sure everyone can feel confident in using these facilities.”

The next intake for a six week course with She Shredders begins on Wednesday, November 12 from 7pm to 8pm at the Brighton Youth Centre. To find out more email: [email protected] or call 01273 292726.

Flitting nuns and spectral celebrities:We live in one of the spookiest cities

Graham Chainey

Hallowe’en is traditionally associated with ghosts, ghouls, and things that go bump - although, in reality, such phenomena observe no

closed season. And the modern Americanised festival of witch-hats, pumpkins, and trick-and-treat tends to trivialise what used to be a time of spiritual communion with the dead.

Curiously, despite its comparatively short history, Brighton and Hove is one of the country’s most spooky cities,

second only to York (whose history goes back millennia). There are at least 200 known haunted locations, including at least 40 pubs.

A twitten-flitting nun, said to have been immured after eloping with a soldier, is one of several phantoms haunting The Lanes, and terrifed a Japanese tourist in 2009. (She vanishes through a

bricked-up doorway in Meeting House Lane.)

Out on the Hangleton Road, where the gibbets once stood, Thomas Kypper, a brutal 17th-century hangman, dressed in tatters with a horrible face and wooden leg, turns to stare near the spot where he himself was finally hanged.

Editha Elmore, murdered daughter of a squire of Woodingdean, haunts Whitehawk Hill. “Betsy Bedlam” used to haunt Belle Vue Field before Regency Square was built, and was the terror of local children, while the “Wick Woman” haunted the gap running down to the beach by Lansdowne Place.

The Protestant martyr Deryk Carver haunts his old Black Lion brewery. The Prince Regent (maybe) walks an underground tunnel linking the Royal Pavilion to the Dome, while Mrs Fitzherbert glides about her former residence. Martha Gunn has manifested in the Pavilion’s kitchens. Sarah Bernhardt (perhaps) frequents a corridor at the Theatre Royal leading to her old dressing-room. Vesta Tilley (they say) stalks the derelict Hippodrome. Murdered police chief Henry Solomon, top-hatted and long-coated, patrols Brighton town hall’s basement.

Preston Manor is one of the city’s most haunted buildings, with its 16th-century White Lady (“Sister Agnes”, according to the ouija board) and other unquiet spirits. Brighton College, Hangleton Manor, Hove Museum, the Royal Albion Hotel, the Friends Meeting House, the Royal Sussex County Hospital (spectral nursing sisters) and Preston Circus fire station (a

spectral fireman) all boast ghosts.Black Belly, or Angry Mick, a large

bald aggressive man, dating from the Georgian houses of Grenville Place that were demolished to make way for the shopping centre, haunts Churchill Square. A spectral horse gallops through St Nicholas churchyard at full moons. Even the ghost train on the pier is reportedly haunted.

Typical of those pub ghosts is the spirit of Lucy Packham, murdered by her husband in 1897, who haunts the Marlborough, sweeping bottles off shelves, switching off the beer gases, twirling lampshades about. Across the way, at the All Bar One in Pavilion Buildings, glasses again leap from shelves, security doors open and close by themselves, lights switch themselves on and off. At the Mash Tun in Church Street, Martha Boxell, manager a century ago, still treads the stairs. At both the Aquarium in Steine Street and the Caroline of Brunswick in Ditchling Road, discarnate voices call to staff. The Cricketers, the Druid’s Head, the Pump House, the Regency Tavern are other haunted hostelries.

Poltergeist houses include the one in Egremont Place graphically described in George Aitchison’s “Unknown Brighton” (1926), and others in Prestonville Road, Lansdowne Terrace, Dorset Gardens, and Ventnor Villas. Phantom pedestrians infest the A23, judged “one of the most haunted roads in the country”. Clayton railway tunnel is still spooked with the horrors of ancient derailments.

Well, you do not have to believe in any of this - until you experience something like it yourself. Having once had a run-in with a ghost in my youth, I give it due credence.

Beauty Parenting

Switching to natural products can be a very personal choice. People detox the chemical overload in their skincare a bit like health freaks cleanse their insides. You might not do it for ever, but it makes a real difference when you do bother.

I quit using chemical cleaners in my home as well; I just want to feel completely comfortable. Try lemons and vinegar, if you go DIY. I tend to spray Parsley Plus from Infinity Foods and wash my cleaning cloths every now and again. Disposable wipes aren’t as green.

There aren’t hard and fast rules for any of this, but it can go wrong. I have a funny experience to share. The Marks and Spencer beauty department stocks some terrific brands, from Fragonard perfume, to REN, and a wide range of very affordable natural lines. They had a blanket discount on over the bank holidays, so I stopped by to indulge my senses and keep an eye on any new trends.

I purchased a bottle of haircare by Apivita. Since 1979, their natural products have been inspired by the honey bee, the biodiversity of Greek nature, and the holistic philosophy of the ancient healer Hippocrates. The pure bee products and organic essential promote balance for the body, mind, and soul. So far so good.

I smoothed honey and tea tree propoline shampoo through my hair and admired its delicate scent and 86% natural credentials at £13 for 250ml. (I paid a fiver in the sale). Then this scalp sensitive treatment lathered up way too fast.

I quickly realised that it contained PEGs and the foaming agent SLS. I had bought it on impulse and without my reading glasses to hand. This fail not only killed my enthusiasm for the whole brand, but also reminded me that the majority of consumers are completely habituated to frothy foam in haircare.

When I shared some other organic shampoo with a couple of friends, they both whined later that it felt thin and "didn’t lather up enough" - despite getting a lovely fresh head of hair after use. For those in doubt, foam does not clean your hair and SLS will not heal an irritable scalp.

We are creatures of habit and many brands uphold that status quo without re-educating consumers.

I’m staying hard-nosed about it: keep a clear head and learn what to avoid.

Pretty Good Thinking

This week I'd like to offer a service to all fellow parents - free of charge, of course. I call it my smug parenting survival kit. Essentially, it relies on the old adage "if you can't beat them, join them".

You see, experience tells me that the best way to counter all those smug parents out there is to out-smug them. See their smug and raise them smugger. (Incidentally, if at this point you find yourself asking how to tell if a parent is of the smug variety, you've clearly never encountered one).

First up, I advise affecting an air of nonchalance in front of said smug parent as you casually mention that your two-year-old spoke a whole 10-word sentence the other day, did the washing up unaided, dressed themselves, or even used the potty willingly as if it's an everyday thing, which it may be. But I have my

doubts about most some of these.Secondly, if you ever find your

child behaving in a way that attracts positive attention from those around you and you're in the midst of the smug parent, adopt a look that says "Oh that old thing? They do that all the time." (See last week’s column for assistance in the art of non-verbal communication).

Another top tip is to insert the word "little" before using your child's name whenever possible. This conveys both a strong sense of their darling nature and underlines how advanced whatever achievement you are about mention is.

And finally, if you're still not getting the reaction that you and

your prodigy deserve and you find yourself continually out-smugged, I suggest writing a newspaper

column about it instead and hoping

that your smug parent friend reads it.

Factfile:

"Scout is a very handsome seven year old male German Shepherd Cross.

"He is a gentle natured boy who will make a very loyal companion as he loves to spend his time relaxing by your side.

"He loves nothing more in this world than food!

"He can settle down with a tasty bone long enough for you to do the housework plus prepare his next meal!

"Scout is looking for a quiet, adult only household where he can be the only pet as he likes his own space.

"In his previous home he was housetrained and could be left for a few hours.

"He enjoys travelling in the car but needs help to get in!

"This beautiful boy is guaranteed to put a forever smile on your face with his endearing bear face and floppy ears.

"His best friends Amy and Mandy will be very happy to discuss him in more detail and introduce him to you."

Can you offer Scout a home? If you can, call the Rehoming Centre on 01273 452576. Information on all animals in need of a new home is online at: www.dogstrust.org.uk.

Give a dog a home¨

Being a mobile vet is an awesome, amazing, rewarding and truly adventurous way to spend ones working day - or night.

The main part of the attraction is learning to strike the right balance of mixing a deep compassion and love for all animals with the skilful art, and some science, of treating the more than average challenging pets in their home environment. For the most successful outcomes for these animals - and their families - it is important that treatment can take place in the safest and most comfortable surroundings possible and on their own terms.

Now one such special and unpredictable patient I have ever had the pleasure to meet and treat at home in my nine years as a mobile vet in Sussex, was one bright Saturday afternoon when I was called out to treat what the owner called “a dog that does not do vets” and who had suddenly become very lame on one of his hind legs.

This is not at all an unusual description for a mobile vet to hear as we get many calls to treat rather unsociable or very large canines - or delicate and sensitive felines at home. This eight year old lame dog I was called out to treat clearly fitted all of those descriptions.

What I learned, soon after I arriving at the big house on one of the distinct hilltops of Brighton, was that this particular dog, greeting me in safe distance from the other side of the garden pool, was to this UK vet of the unfamiliar breed called a “Native American Indian Dog”. This was apparently also the “undercover” name trademarked to this very large dog type and what had enabled his otherwise unlawful import with his family to the UK seven years prior: Kono, as my new patient was called, was clearly all wolf - or rather – an immensely handsome and shy wolf hybrid.

The result of this type of breeding native to the USA is a unique, quite unusual type of dog, bearing all the expected characteristics of a wolf; shy, independent and with very strong flight reflexes.

For this vet, that translates into a very difficult task indeed to help him, especially at a time when he was feeling low and extra vulnerable. Now Kono’s lovely owners were merely unaware when they went to acquire a hypoallergenic dog, that this handsome dog possessed some very unique characteristics. And what I learned was that all the hard earned “tricks of the trade” I had picked up on over 6,000 home visits, certainly paid off that Saturday afternoon.

Find out what happened to Kono on this page in two weeks’ time.

Now in its 15th year, the publication of the Brighton and Hove Calendar heralds the imminent arrival of the Christmas present-buying season.

For Nigel Swallow, of North Laine Photography, this year's edition marks the end of an era. He is passing on the baton to Finn Hopson, a regular contributor and owner of Brighton Photography.

Nigel said: "We've been putting it together for 15 years and it's been a privilege to be custodian of it for so long. But fresh eyes and breath are well overdue in my opinion. I can't wait to see what the young whippersnapper does with it!"

Free business workshop for aspiring start-up entrepreneursAmerican Express and Brighton and Hove Albion’s charitable wing, Albion in the Community (AITC) are running a free workshop aimed at entrepreneurial out of work locals.

Budding entrepreneurs from across Sussex are being offered the opportunity to attend Want to Work Entrepreneur - a free, three-day workshop run by AITC and American Express.

Providing insights from guest speakers and practical advice from local professionals, Want to Work Entrepreneur takes place on November 25 to 27 at the American Express Community Stadium and Amex 1 John Street.

Spaces are available for up to 20 locals who are interested in setting themselves up in business. Aimed mainly towards job seekers in receipt of Job Seekers Allowance (JSA) and PRE New Enterprise Allowance (NEA), the workshop covers core entrepreneurial business basics including building a brand, development of business

plans and routes to funding. Now in its second year, Want

to Work Entrepreneur forms part of the wider Want to Work initiative, launched by AITC in October 2011 with support from the charity’s main partner, American Express.

By providing local unemployed people with skills training and work experience placements, Want to Work aims to help them back into the workplace. With involvement from 27 business partners in the private, public and voluntary sectors, Want to

Work has seen 46 participants

secure employment within 12 weeks of

finishing the course. Karen Tiltman, vice president

of American Express and one of the programme mentors, said: “Want to Work Entrepreneur has been developed to encourage people of all ages, whether currently in work, or seeking employment, to realise their business potential.

“It provides guidance and builds confidence to assist participants in turning what might be a business dream into a workable plan.”

Michael Edwards, CEO of AITC, said: “Partnering with Sussex businesses on

programmes like Want to Work is all about opening doors to get local people into the workforce.

“Whether that is by connecting them with potential employers, or by providing them with the tools and the motivation to make the move and

set up on their own.”

Q & A with The Montefiore Hospital’s consultant Nora Nugent, Consultant Plastic Surgeon answers some questions on cosmetic surgery.

What areas of cosmetic surgery do you do? I see people for cosmetic surgery of the face, breasts and body. This includes facelifts, eyelid surgery, breast reshaping, tummy tucks and liposuction.

I also see people for non-surgical facial rejuvenation. This includes treatments such as muscle relaxing injections for wrinkles, dermal fillers, or microneedling to improve the skin surface appearance.

Why do people come to you for cosmetic surgery? People wish to have cosmetic surgery for a huge variety of reasons. Some have a feature of which they are very self-conscious, such as a large or a crooked nose, or very small or very large breasts. This can hugely affect their self-confidence and quality of life. Others see me because their face or body has changed over time and they wish to improve or refresh their appearance. This could be because of the aging process or after significant

weight gain or weight loss. I also see women who have changes to their bodies and breasts after pregnancy who wish to improve their post-pregnancy shape.

How do you decide who should have cosmetic surgery? I see all patients for cosmetic surgery at least twice before any surgery takes place. This is to ensure that I can do a thorough assessment and that there is sufficient time to discuss what the procedure will involve and time to answer any questions that may arise. The discussion includes details on what the procedure can achieve for them, what the recovery period will be and any potential risks of the procedure. Each patient will then need to undergo a full assessment for the surgery that they are interested in and also have a check on their general health and well-being. I will then give an honest opinion regarding the individual’s suitability for surgery and what procedure is best suited to their requirements.

Do you only do cosmetic surgery? No, my clinical practice also includes a lot of reconstructive surgery such as after-burn injuries, leg or hand injuries or after-cancer surgery, such as skin cancer or breast cancer reconstructive surgery.

Ms Nugent has regular clinics at the Spire Montefiore Hospital in Hove. For further information please visit: www.spiremontefiore.com or call 01273 828148

Don’t let wet wipes comeback to haunt you To avoid a fright this Halloween, Southern Water is asking people to treat their toilets and not trick them by flushing away the wrong things.

Ghastly items such as wet wipes, plasters and cotton buds should all be put in the bin. If flushed away, they mix with a greasy mass of congealed cooking oils and cause blockages which threaten to flood homes with wastewater.

Last month, more than 59 tons of non-biodegradable items had to be removed from Peacehaven Treatment Works. That’s the equivalent weight of 37 hippos.

Bruce, Southern Water’s

potty-mouthed sewer monster, who was found in the pipes at a wastewater treatment works, said: “Halloween can be a scary time of year in the sewers with ghoulish wipes on the prowl and blobs of fat creeping through the pipes.

“Don’t let wet wipes come back to haunt you, only flush the three Ps - pee, poo and paper. Everything else is a pain in the drain and should be put in the bin including fat, oil and grease.”

For more wacky toilet tales and interesting facts follow Bruce on Twitter @MrBruceMonster or visit: www.southernwater.co.uk/paininthedrain.

Bonett’s

Today started well. 5 minutes to get from home above Queen’s Park to the office in Kemp Town on my bike, wet weather gear at the ready but so far, not needed.

Murray’s day off; Karen and Kerri are also away as it’s half-term, so four of us are in. We quickly discuss who will do what in the office to make sure we keep all bases covered whilst staff are off.

First call of the day was a flooded drain...no surprise. We contact our drains’ man to go as soon as possible.

Then I get ready for my first valuation. The property is vacant so we are told to collect a key from a central Brighton agent. We call them to confirm I’m coming over on the bike. They say their Kemp Town office has them. We call them. They say they have lent them to another agent to also carry out a valuation and that agent has not returned them...we call them, walk along and collect them.

I then jump on the bike, togged up for the rain (it’s never the wrong weather, just the wrong clothes), and go to the property.

I go in the entrance vestibule and discover that the inner door has a security code. Has anyone

told us this? No. I call the office, who call the first agent who says ‘Oh sorry, forgot to say...’ Hmm. I am told to ring one of the flat bells who will give me the code, which I do and at last get up to the top floor flat. The mortice key does not work and the yale is sticky but I manage to get in after some tender loving care.

I look around the flat. It’s fine. Just one thing: in the hall is a tall wooden ladder on a catch. I look up and about 4 metres up is an open, yes open, casement window on a rainy day. You know I’m on my own... If I climb the ladder and fall, injure myself or break my neck, the office will not know for a while. Needs must! I decide to do the expeditious thing, climb the ladder and close the window, which I do, balancing on a rung about 3 metres off the ground, needing both hands to do the job.

I get down, lock the flat up and deliver the keys back to the first agent, mentioning the code and the window. Now, I report back to the client on our valuation.

No names, no pack drill but is it any wonder people think some agents are rank amateurs when, to just do one thing, we have to leap through about half a dozen hoops.

The government is loath to regulate our industry as it says the market will decide who is professional and who is not. But you, as the public, will generally have little idea, until you are ‘in bed’ with an agent, whether or not you have chosen a champ or a chump. Be careful, be very careful! For selling, ensure your agent of choice is a member of the National Association of Estate Agents or if letting, the Association of Residential Letting Agents.

The places I eat

Chewing the fat withThe Ginger Pig's chef

In the second of our new monthly series, Chewing The Fat, we’ve donned our aprons and headed on through the swinging door into the kitchen in order to get up close and personal with some of Brighton and Hove’s top chefs. This month we chatted to Semone Bonner, head chef of The Ginger Pig in Hove and one third of pop-up group The Set.

Tell us about your backgroundOther than a brief spell of three years cooking in France and Greece.

I have always been a chef in Brighton. After finishing my catering qualifcations at what is now City College Brighton and Hove, I was shaped in my early years as a chef at Brighton’s now gone food institute One Paston Place before moving on to cook at some of Brighton’s other finest restaurants.

What inspires you?I get inspired by all things around me, just going into a shop to grab a pastry might make me want to recreate or work with the flavours that I have just tasted. The seasons also direct my inspiration. Looking around seeing what's growing at this time of year, deep into game season with the cold weather closing in, what's not to get inspired by? Or with Hallowe'en it's easy to be inspired to want to create a spooky 10 course tasting menu complete with horror and fun.

What’s your favourite food memory? My favourite food memory is actually very recent. It would have to be the first service we delivered as a pop-up restaurant company. When we started The Set we had no

idea where it would go and even if people would take to us and what we do.

Interactive and playful food is not to everyone's taste, but when we delivered that first service and to see the reception and response to what we had just delivered, it was priceless.

It's a great food memory because we knew then that we were on to something, and it was so much fun.

What are your favourite ingredients and cooking techniques?I really enjoy making food that creates questions and excitement. Maltodextrin is a product now being used far more extensively in the modern kitchen and it's one of my favourite tools. It allows us to turn any fat based product into a powder that then turns back to its original form on your tongue. For example, a white powder made that you pop in your mouth and then in an instant, smooth peanut butter! Brilliant.

Where do you see yourself in five years’ time?As long as I'm still cooking and have a roof over my head I will be happy. I guess the dream is to

have my own restaurant/pop up company in the future but who knows what's around the corner.

Sum up your cooking style in three words?Interactive, seasonal, fun.

Decaffeinated coffee may well be sacrilegious and frankly embarrassing to order, but don't let that stop you.

First created in 1903, its production has changed

vastly over the years and its consumption has become more widespread. Perhaps it became a more attractive proposition when the processing method no longer required carcinogenic chemicals.

From triglycerides, carbon dioxide, and ethyl acetate, to steam, hot water and wishful thinking - there are as many varieties of the decaffeination process as there are pregnant women ordering it.

Given the complexity of the flavour profile of coffee, it is understandably difficult to remove the caffeine without destroying

the taste and aroma. By "difficult", we mean almost impossible. It's a great palate cleanser, as once swallowed, there is no discernable flavour left behind.

The authorities who police your caffeine intake (yeah, they exist) state that 99.9% of the caffeine must be removed in order for us to have the right to call it decaf. This percentage of efficiency is the

same as that of contraception. In fact, they serve the same purpose - order a decaf on your first date and you'll see.

The struggling Seagulls fall under the Sky Sports spotlight tomorrow evening (Saturday) with the pressure on Sami Hyypiä showing no signs of lessening.

Brighton head along the south coast desperate for the victory which would bring an end to their current winless run in the league - a run which stretches back to August 23 and the side’s 2-1 home triumph over struggling Bolton.

The Albion have only lost five of their 14 Championship games so far, which is just one more than Saturday’s fourth placed opponents.

Hyypiä’s squad, however, has found it difficult to turn draws into wins – with only three other Championship sides having registered as many stalemates as the Seagulls’ seven.

On the face of it, both Brighton and Bournemouth began this season in a similar situation. Neither benefit from the parachute payments enjoyed by some of their rivals and both were preparing for life without their chief goal threat. Bournemouth sold Lewis Grabban to Norwich City, while the Albion cashed in on Leo Ulloa.

But while Ulloa’s replacements have yet to find their scoring boots - Adrian Colunga, Sam Baldock and Chris O’Grady have all yet to register in the league - the man charged with filling Grabban’s boots has been an almost immediate success.

Callum Wilson arrived from

Coventry City in early July having scored 22 goals in 41 games for the Sky Blues last season. He hit the ground running and already has nine league goals to his name from his opening 14 appearances. How Hyypiä would relish a striker on such a current hot streak.

Another reason for Bournemouth’s early season success has been the form of midfielder Matt Ritchie. The creative talent has already assisted eight goals and scored one himself in his 1,108 minutes of Championship football. The Albion’s leading assist maker is Kazenga Lua Lua with two.

Brighton ‘keeper David Stockdale sat out the team’s midweek defeat at White Hart Lane after picking up an injury. England youth international Christian Walton proved

an able deputy and Hyypiä would presumably have no qualms about giving him his Championship bow if needed.

Joe Bennett should return at left back in place of Adam Chicksen and Gordon Greer, also rested at Spurs, will almost certainly take his place alongside Lewis Dunk. The impressive young defender is rumoured to be attracting Premier League interest and his recent performances will have done nothing to dampen the appetite of the circling scouts.

Craig Mackail-Smith will be pushing for a starting place after his hurly-burly cameo at White Hart Lane showed signs he is returning to full fitness, although second-guessing Hyypiä’s selection remains a near impossible task.

I am very happy with the performance, the work rate and the effort from the players. We showed a great desire to defend our goal, battled until the end and everyone in the dressing room is tired which is how it should be. In the end it was only that little bit of extra class that told.

"We can take a lot of positives from this game and learn from it. If everyone puts in that amount of effort that we showed tonight when we were not in possession, we will start to win games instead of drawing them.

"The support from our fans was great. I loved it. The fans sang from the kick-off and kept singing right until the end. I knew there was going to be a lot of Albion fans, but I didn't expect that and the support was excellent."

Brighton head to Bournemouth tomorrow in desperate need of a positive result as they try and pull themselves out of their recent winless run. If they are to succeed against the high-flying Cherries, chances are Kazenga Lua Lua will need to be on top form. The jet-heeled attacking talent troubled Premier League Spurs in midweek and remains the Seagulls most dangerous attacking threat. His pace remains vital to the Albion.

Of course it was going to be a big night: a huge crowd, an historic stadium and the chance to create history by reaching the League Cup quarter-finals for only the second time in their history

However, the next three games could well define Brighton and Hove Albion's season not a trip to the Lane. There were plenty of positives in the defeat to Spurs however the Seagulls must perform over the next eight days if they are to resurrect their season.

On paper the first game at Bournemouth appears to be the biggest challenge. The Cherries hit eight goals against Birmingham last weekend and in mid-week wrote a new chapter in their history by beating West Bromwich Albion. Eddie Howe's side really are

on fire. In fact it would be no disgrace to come away from Dean Court with a point.

However, draws are just not good enough.

Sami Hyypia's side must surely pick up a victory in either of the home games against Wigan or Blackburn. If not the consequences could be dire for both the club and the manager.

Chairman Tony Bloom will no doubt be concerned about the league position going into the next international break but the long term ramifications of a relegation battle are not

something he would want to entertain after two play-off finishes.

Additional players are being sought and a proven striker would be top of the shopping

list. However, if results do not improve he may well

look at major surgery both on and off the pitch.

A change of fortune may be required with one moment of luck to turn things

around but to achieve longer term objectives he may need to keep his

nerve, something thankfully for supporters, he is very good at.

The hugely-experienced writer will pose questions to a collection of leading lights from the world of sports coverage, including the Daily Telegraph’s multi award-winning chief sports writer Paul Hayward.

Also included in the line-up are Lynne Truss, former sports feature writer with The Times and author of Get Her Off The Pitch, Brian Oliver, former sports editor of The Observer and author of the definitive book on the Commonwealth Games, Mick

Cleary, rugby correspondent of the Daily Telegraph and Paul Weaver, Formula One correspondent of The Guardian and co-author of Flight of the Martlets: the Golden Age of Sussex Cricket.

According to Mr Szczepanik the night represents a superb opportunity for local sports fans to quiz some of the biggest names in journalism - with something for everyone.

He said: “Paul Hayward knows about every sport under the sun while the others are experts in certain fields but, like almost every sports writer, have been called upon to report in other areas.

“I'm a football and NFL specialist, but I've covered tennis, croquet, four-in-hand carriage-driving, you name it.

“There'll be questions sent in beforehand in the first half, Question Time-style, and then questions from the floor in the second.

“I'm sure there will be questions about the Rugby World Cup, Sussex cricket, and the Albion as well as the big stories of the moment, but I'm also expecting more general enquiries about why there aren't more women in the sports media - Lynne can tell some revealing stories about that - and the role of the media in sport.”

And, of course, it is all for a good cause, as Mr Szczepanik explained: “Exeter Street Hall was and is a well-used local resource and the local community was given a chance to buy it when St Luke's church, the owners, had to sell.

“We were able to raise enough money to keep it out of the hands of developers and now we all own a share on a not-for-profit basis. But things like roof repairs don't come cheap.”

Tickets are £8 or £5 for concessions and can be ordered online at: www.exeterstreethall.org.
