Opportunities within the Stafford Collegiate Enhancing Achievement—Aims and Aspirations

Blessed William Howard has always enjoyed a partnership with the Chetwynd Centre, and Stafford College, enabling our students to access courses and qualifications which are not available within school. Our links with these institutions, as well as the other Stafford High Schools, have now been strengthened through our collaboration within The Stafford Collegiate. Our aim is to accommodate our students on appropriate courses in school and to maintain the pastoral care and enrichment which we consider to be a strength of our school. Where students may wish to study subjects off site our co-operation within the Collegiate will facilitate this. Students should consider, however, the demands of travelling between two or possibly three separate institutions. Students should use this booklet in conjunction with The Stafford Collegiate Prospectus and online application form. The aims of Blessed William Howard Catholic Sixth Form are to: – support the decision making process in Year 11 as students make their plans for Post-16 education. – support the development of independent study skills during the transition from GCSE to AS. – ensure effective links with Connexions staff and encourage work experience Post-16. – support students when making job / course applications for higher education and preparation for interview. – encourage students to become involved within the school community through a variety of enrichment activities. – promote spiritual development within the ethos of a Catholic Sixth Form in its academic, spiritual and pastoral roles. – provide a mentoring programme that allows students to set targets to help support their progression. – encourage student participation in the running of the Sixth Form and their responsibility for their environment.

provide effective liaison with other Post-16 providers within the Stafford Collegiate – support the aims of the school by acting in accordance with the whole School Mission Statement and the Sixth Form Learning Agreement.

Curriculum Sixth Form Life

Most students study the equivalent of four subjects to AS level in the lower sixth (Year 12) and reduce to three subjects at A2 level in the upper sixth (Year 13). It may be possible, depending upon timetabling arrangements, to pursue an additional AS course in Year 13. In addition each student undertakes an enrichment programme. The qualifications that are available are as follows: 1. Advanced Subsidiary Qualifications (AS): studied in Year 12 but it may be possible to do additional qualifications at this level in Year 13. 2. Advanced Qualifications (A2): They are available only as an extension to qualifications at AS level and success at that level will be a criterion for progression to A2. 3. Business and Technology Education Council (BTEC) National Certificate / Diploma (Level 3) & First Diploma (Level 2): These are more practically focused qualifications with an entirely different approach to study than the more traditional academic A level. A greater emphasis is placed upon the development of good research / study habits in the compilation of work portfolios. BTEC National Certificate / Diploma are now often accepted as equivalents to A level when applying to higher education; to check the requirements for a given course / university please refer to the UCAS Website (www.ucas.com). BTEC First Diplomas are equivalent to 4 GCSEs at C grades. Any student wishing to enrol for courses at Chetwynd must be based at a Stafford High School or Stafford College. If you are intending to apply to higher education after Sixth Form then check the subject/ qualification requirements for different courses on the Website: www.ucas.com It is important to remember that pursuing courses in different educational establishments will have a bearing upon time spent travelling between venues. Some courses may become oversubscribed and whilst every effort will be made to accommodate students this may not always be possible. Also, subjects pursued in Y12 must be continued up to the September of Y13 (i.e. until the AS results are published) before any modification is made to the Y13 programme of study. To be a member of the Sixth Form is to be one of the senior student members of the school. Recognising this seniority, the school places great store upon expectations in terms of work habits and in the example expected to be shown towards younger members of the school community. You cannot be a member of the Sixth Form without continuing to be a member of the wider school community.

SENIORITY IS RESPECTED AND EXPECTED AT ALL TIMES

Privileges, Responsibilities and Accountabilities Careers and Higher Education Preparation Enrichment Dress Punctuality, atten-dance and designated ‘off-site’ time

The Sixth Form have a number of privileges over the rest of the school including the use of a brand new Sixth Form Centre, a Sixth Form ICT room and greater flexibility in the organisation of their own time; students are given non-contact time in order to cope with the demands of the work at this level. The management of this time is crucial to ultimate success. As in all aspects of adulthood, with privileges come responsibilities to oneself, one’s peers and the wider community as a whole. All Y12 students are expected to take on extra responsibilities in the realm of community roles of various kinds. Along with the delegation of these responsibilities, students will be deemed accountable for all aspects of their life and work, within the Sixth Form. These accountabilities will be monitored throughout the Sixth Form and become the basis of mentoring discussions with tutors and the Sixth Form Year Leader (Mr Nolan). It may seem a long way off, but in actual fact, an A level course consists of just 60 teaching weeks across the two years. It is important, therefore, that students gain careers guidance early in Y12 and then keep an eye on prospectuses and open days at Universities so that they are well-informed about courses and possible career paths. University application takes place before Christmas in Y13 and guidance will be given on UCAS applications, applying for jobs and interviews. Sixth Form years are crucial in terms of the formation of mature attitudes towards life and work in a complex world. The most difficult stage, initially, is managing the transition between Year 11 and Sixth Form working styles where a much greater onus is placed upon the student to research and read around their subject area and to manage their study time effectively. Guidance is given on this as part of the enrichment programme which subsequently broadens in focus to cover topical issues of interest including health promotion and world affairs. The overriding principle here is that students are expected to come to school looking smart and business-like. Schools nationally have a concern regarding the safeguarding of all pupils whilst on the school premises. Appearance can often be the key to speedy apprehension of unwelcome visitors. Students are also required to carry an identity pass at all times. Y12 and Y13 students are in FULL TIME EDUCATION. They are expected to be in attendance at all times and punctual for all of the following:

Tutorials Subject lessons and enrichment sessions. Careers interviews. Assemblies. Any special meetings advertised in advance.

AS level and A levels offered Entry to courses Part-time Work

The following section outlines the AS / A Level courses offered at BWH. Please study the details carefully. Students should approach the contact indicated in the course details for additional information. NOTE: Your AS grade will count 50% towards your final A2 grade. Every effort will be made to run subjects offered at this point in time but some subjects may be withdrawn if predicted numbers are very low. Occasionally subjects may be over-subscribed. Again every effort will be made to accommodate all students. There are, however, limitations according to room size, computer facilities (for ICT & Computing), laboratory space (for Sciences) and available teaching staff. Most A Level subjects are available for a complete 2 year course: AS in Y12, A2 in Y13, leading to a complete A Level. For subjects where numbers reduce considerably from AS to A2, the viability of the course will be given serious consideration. It may be possible to transfer between similar courses at different institutions but be warned that different institutions may follow different specifications, which may not be compatible. Y12 AS students will sit external examinations in May and June. For acceptance on to A2 courses attendance at lessons in June and July is essential. As students can change their minds about subject choices post results published in August it is essential that students attend all subject lessons even if they do not expect to continue a subject. Students should be aware that each AS or equivalent course will require extra work outside of contact time; on average this means five hours private study per subject per week. Even if a specific homework task is not set, independent reading of textbooks to enhance knowledge and understanding is essential for success at this level. Some students will also be looking to generate some income through part-time work. It is important that students do not jeopardise their success in their academic studies by taking on too many extra hours of work outside of school. We recommend no more than 9 hours of part-time work a week. Please note: All information contained within this Prospectus was correct at time of printing. However, students should be aware that slight modifications to syllabi are sometimes made by the examination boards. If in doubt you are advised to check for changes with the Curriculum Leader concerned before you submit your final application.
