Dear Student
Taking the decision to join The Howard Sixth Form will be one of the best choices you ever make. You remain a crucial and valued part of the school as a whole, but your environment and your place in the community is very different. Our aim is to create the perfect transition between school and university, further study or work. We will achieve this by giving you greater freedoms, for example in how you dress and how you study, along with very personalised support to ensure that we continue ‘Bringing out the Best’ in you until the day you leave.
Every year our results place us amongst the highest achieving schools in the country, reflecting the excellent teaching and strong support of the Sixth Form team.
We hope you will decide to join us. We do expect hard work, and your support as the senior students in the school, but there are plenty of opportunities to socialise and to have fun.
We look forward to welcoming you into our Sixth Form and working with each of you to achieve your personal goals.
R J Barnfield CBE, MA, BSc H Pennington BSc (Hons), NQPH
CEO, The Howard Partnership Trust Headteacher

Choosing The Howard Most students who have been through the Sixth
Form will probably say how different it is to being in
Year 11. It isn’t just that you have your own centre,
dress code and greater freedom: the Sixth Form
experience is more than this. The two years you
spend with us prepare you for life after school as
you move into university, further training or
employment.
The Sixth Form at The Howard is a mix of students
from a variety of both local state and independent
schools as well as from our own Year 11. The stay
on rate is high at The Howard which reflects our
excellent results and student satisfaction.
What will I study? A levels are now ‘linear’ courses which means all exams will be taken at the end of Year 13.
We anticipate nearly all of you will study 3 A levels and that some may choose to take 4.
What is different from Year 11 is that we expect you to take more responsibility for your learning. There is more of a university atmosphere to study in the Sixth Form and you can take your study periods in the cyber café, the Learning Resources Centre (LRC), in the new study area in the Sixth Form Centre or in the Common Room study area which offer over 70 computers for dedicated study. You can also bring in your own laptop or i-pad and access the school WiFi network.
Student Support
We know the transition from KS4 to KS5 can
be a bit daunting and we are here to help
you. The Sixth Form team led by our Head
of Sixth and supported by three Assistant
Year Leaders and a committed tutor team
ensures the academic progress and pastoral
well-being of all students. The Director of
Sixth Form co-ordinates the applications to
Higher Education which take place in the
autumn term of Year 13. We have a
dedicated Admin Assistant too so there is
always someone who can help.
Life in the Sixth Form
From the moment you enter our Sixth Form
we consider you as part of ‘our team’ and we
aim to make these the best two years of your
school life. We have high expectations of you
and are constantly impressed by the
confident, responsible and high–achieving
individuals you become. Sixth Form isn’t just
about hard work it is also about taking part
whether that is by raising money during Rag
week for charity, being part of the Senior
Prefect team or organising the Christmas and
Leavers’ Balls. There is something in The
Howard Sixth Form for everyone.
