Geomorphic Function Assessment Example

• Geomorphic function is based on evaluation of six functional attributes.

─ Physical channel dimensions: lateral and longitudinal complexity and stability

─ Channel and floodplain features: morphological unit diversity; bank stability

─ Substrate: coarse surface grain size distribution; lack of fine sediment accumulation

─ Hydraulics: hydraulic complexity

─ Hydrologic connectivity: connection with floodplain; lack of incision; lack of fine sediment accumulation

─ Vegetation: robust riparian growth owing to abundant year-round water source in arid environment; large wood material in channel

• Information from field data is used to score each attribute ─ 1 = absent or dysfunctional

─ 2 = scarce or partly functional

─ 3 = present and functional

─ 4 = abundant and fully functional

• Attributes that are abundant and/or fully functional represent the characteristics that should exist for a fully functional, non-impaired reach. Overall reach function is expressed as the percent of a fully functional reach.
