Dear Families,

Happy New Year to our families celebrating the Lunar New Year! The recent snowfall and the wintery landscape reminds me of when my children were little. Full Day Kindergarten Registration Open

In the last couple of weeks, we have had a large number of students arrive late to school. The value of being punctual is a very important life skill, which we are en-deavouring to teach our children. Lateness interrupts the learning of the individual student and is disruptive to peers in class.

Students are supervised from 8:45am—8:55am outside or inside during inclement weather. The bell rings at 8:55am and students are expected to be in their class-rooms ready to learn at 9:00am.

We recognize that there is high traffic volume around our school in the morning, and ask parents to please consider parking on a side street away from the school and walking with your child to school OR leaving a few minutes earlier to ensure your child arrives at school on time.

Registration for the 2014/15 school year began on January 17, 2014 for Kindergarten. Students born on or before Dec 31 2010 are eligible for Junior Kindergarten in the 2014/2015 school year and must live within the BHES boundaries. We are unable to register students from outside our school boundary area. Registrations are dated as they are received.

Parents/Guardians are reminded to bring appropriate documen-tation at the time of registration:

Child’s birth certificate Proof of residency (Property tax bill + other that shows ad-dress) For rental agreements, provide a copy of lease agreement (+ 3 pieces of documentation indicating the parents’ name and address)

Page 2 Bayview Hill Newsletter Feb 2014

To ensure the safe arrival of our students, it is the responsibility of and essential that parents/guardians call the school whenever your child is going to be absent from school. You may leave a mes-sage on our voice mail or speak directly to the office. When a student is absent, and the school has not received a call regarding the absence, we attempt to reach emergency contacts. If we are unable to reach someone regarding the student’s where-abouts we are required to call the police.

YRDSB Launches NEW Mission, Vision Values and Slogan Inspire Learning!

Congratulations to our Junior Volley-ball Team!

Our students placed 2nd in the Area Tournament.

We’re proud of you.

Thanks to our coaches Jane Saw-chuk and Lora Jeffery for your time and commit-ment.

Board Launches New Mission, Vision, Values and Slogan Mission: To advance student achievement and well-being through public education, which motivates learners, fosters inclusion, inspires innovation and builds community.

The York Region District School Board is celebrating the launch of its new Mission, Vision and Values statements and slogan – Inspire Learning!

The Board last reviewed these statements in the late 1990s. Since that time, educa-tion in York Region has been influenced by a number of significant changes, including changes in technology, in our communities and in our learning environments.

Community members, parents/guardians, staff members and students had the op-portunity to provide input and share ideas about the ideal future of public education in York Region. Thank you to everyone who participated in the process.

For more information, visit the Board website at www.yrdsb.ca.

Myth: Learning disabilities are all the same and/or easily understood.

Fact: Learning disabilities are complicated. The extent of their impact and the areas oflearning they affect vary greatly from person to person, combine in any variety of ways, and vary depending on context. Helping is not as complicated: people with LDs needto determine which modes of learning work well for them, and use these strengths tocompensate for the areas affected by their LD.

Myth: Students with LDs cannot learn.

Fact: Students with LDs can be successful learners by compensating for theirweaknesses using their strengths, by using alternative, individualized teaching andlearning materials and methods, and by choosing tasks that suit their style.

Myth: More boys than girls have learning disabilities.

Fact: Although boys are four times more likely to be identified as LDs by schools thangirls, research studies suggest that many girls who are not identified also have themost common form of learning problem - difficulty with reading. Many girls' learningdifficulties are neither identified nor treated - possibly because boys who arestruggling are, in general, more disruptive in classes.

Myth: Learning disabilities are only a school issue.

Fact: LDs affect one or more modes of learning, anywhere that mode is used. LDs tendto be noticed most often when they impact on school-learning, but exist in all areas oflife - work, family, relationships, etc.

Myth: Providing academic adjustments such as accommodations and individualizedteaching gives students with LDs an unfair advantage over other students.

Fact: Academic adjustments are determined based on deficits resulting from a student'sLDs. Adjustments ensure equal and fair participation in a learning environment andhelp ensure actual learning is taking place and recognized. Students with LDs arerequired to meet the same academic standards as their peers.
