Barents Road International Organisa-

tion is a young, international organi-

sation with the aim of creating good

opportunities for the development of people

and companies in the Barents region. The de-

velopment of Barents Road to link the region

is naturally the primary goal. Our members

are municipalities and companies along the

road, which runs through Russia, Finland,

Sweden and Norway. We also have strong

support from the regional authorities in the

Barents Region.

The organisation works actively to promote

increased co-

operation in

the Barents

region. We

have arranged

seminars on

different is-

sues. We take

part in trade

fairs and acti-

vities alongside other parties from the region

in order to present our attractive and fascina-

ting region. We are also involved in projects

to improve traffic safety in the region.

In recent years we have achieved several

important targets. One major milestone was

in autumn 2002 when the border crossing

in Salla was opened to international traffic,

which led to a considerable increase in the

number of travellers and hence place plays a

vital role in ongoing development. Since sum-

mer 2003 there have also been regular bus

services between Kemijärvi and Murmansk.

This makes it possible to travel by bus all

the way from Bodø in Norway to Murmansk

in Russia thanks to fantastic collaboration

between a number of bus companies throug-

hout the Barents region. Passenger traffic and

goods traffic along Barents Road are both very

important for the development of trade and

industry and for cooperation between people

and authorities.

We are naturally pleased with the success

of our work. But we are still committed to our

task of developing Barents Road on a broad

front to become attractive, well-known desti-

nation and an effective route within the Ba-

rents region.

This is the fifth issue of Barents Road Ma-

gazine. We hope it will inform and inspire you

to further explorations and the Barents regi-

on. We welcome your comments and requests

for future development work.

Being the administrative centre of Nordland county, Bodø hosts region-al institutions, theatres, museums

and schools, as well as a broad choice of restaurants, clubs and bars. The city con-sists of mostly modern buildings, a result of the heavy German bombing in May 1940 that put the whole centre in flames. The main shopping mall, Glashuset, is a full block of buildings under a glass roof, with shops, restaurants, cinema and kiosks. Big glass windows can also be found in the new swimming complex Nordlandsbadet, 3400 square metres of pools, waterslides, foun-tains, waves, grotto, jacuzzi and saunas.

The heart of coast town Bodø can be found down at the waterfront. Strolling along the long pier is an enjoyable and interest-ing “must do” for the visitor. In the har-bour basin you can study yachts, sailing ships, fishing boats and ferries of all types and sizes, including traditional wooden Nordland boats, with a form reminding of

Salten History Museum from 1903 is one of the town’s oldest buildings, almost a labyrinth with its many small rooms and exhibition halls. The exhibitions give you an idea about the life of fishermen, miners, reindeer herders, farmers and other peo-ples of the north. Another big museum is the Norwegian Aviation Museum at the entrance of town.

Some of Bodø´s main attractions are situat-ed outside town: Saltstraumen, the strongest maelstrom in the world is situated 33 kilome-tres south from Bodø. Enormous amounts of water rush through the 150 metres wide and three kilometres long sound between the Saltenfjord and the Skjerstadfjord. Divers can report about a whole forest of seaweed down there. And on the shores anglers enjoy the rich fishlife. Forty kilometres north of Bodø is the old trading post Kjerringøy. Fifteen well-pre-served buildings give a good picture of how rich merchants ruled whole villages. The richness came from trading fish to Europe . And finally, if you want to get an Arctic experience the year around: visit the big glacier Svartisen, 175 kilometres south of Bodø!

Viking ships. Small fishing boats at the quay offer newly cooked shrimps from northern waters.

To overlook the town and its surroundings you may visit the old fortress Skanse, situat-ed on Burøy across the narrow bay from the city centre. From the bastion, built in early 19th Century against blockading English warships, you will see the town with majestic fells behind. In opposite direction the eye meets the inlet to Bodø and the open sea. To get a real bird’s view of the area’s waters and fells the Rønvikfjellet mountain is the place to go. There is a tourist lodge on the top, and on a clear day you can even see the steep Lofoten Islands on the northern side of the vast Vestfjorden. If you are lucky you also might get a glimpse of sea eagles. Bodø has the worlds largest stock of these big birds, daily circling high above the town and the islands near.

Historical Journey on the Kola Peninsula

Day 1 Train from Stockholm C in the afternoonWhen you have boarded the train awaits a journey through northern Sweden’s scenic area, open landscapes, coast landscape in the bright summer night. Perhaps a good meal in the train restaurante will tempt you before you fall asleep accompanied by the peaceful throbbing of the train.

Day 2 Luleå – SallaWe leave Luleå and travel eastwards through Haparanda to Torneå, a 17th century town, once a central place for the traffic between the Gulf of Bothnia and the Arctic Ocean. We continue to Rovaniemi, the capital of

Finnish Lapland or “the white city”. After a visit in Rovaniemi we leave the Arctic Circle to go on to Kemijärvi, Finland’s northern-most city, to our destination Salla.

Day 3 Salla – MurmanskAbout one Swedish mile east of Salla we arrive to the old Iron Curtain that was closed for 80 years, but open nowadays. We travel through a wilderness that was on fire at the front line being here for several years during the Second World War. In old Salla on the Russian side is one of the larg-est cemetaries from the Second World War, where thousands of killed German soldiers are buried. After a long journey on the roads in Russia our GSM phones suddenly starts functioning again, and we arrive to the half-a-million people city of Murmansk.

Day 4 MurmanskMurmansk, northern Russia’s gate is still of great military importance through the pres-ence of the Arctic fleet. The city is impor-tant for trade, and has mile-long quays in the ice-free harbour at the Kola Peninsula. A Swedish speaking guide will make us familiar with the city, once founded by the tsar Nikolai II in 1916.

Day 5 Murmansk – IvaloWe travel west along the Arctic Road to

Rovaniemi - Salla - Murmansk - Petsamo - Ivalo - Torne ValleyThis is a journey with many memories from the 40s, cul-tures, religions and meeting with people of origin. A memorable journey in the Valley of Honour – the Valley of Death, Petsamo (Petjenga), Kirkenes, the only Norwegian town meeting the east. Through Finnish Lapland and Tankavaara “the Klondyke of the Arctic”. And finally the Midnight sun mountain Aavasaksa in the Torne Valley.

Norway to the Valley of Death or “The Valley of Honour”, as the Russians say. If you kick at the moss you will find rusty helmets, cooking utensiles and empty car-tride belts from the war. Here are many great monuments reminding of the horrors of war. Soon we arrive to Pecenga or the then Finnish village Petsamo, known from the war years 1940-41, when truck convoys transported aircraft parts from the ice-free harbour to Sweden. Finally arriving in Norway we make a short visit to Kirkenes before we continue through the Skolt Sami village Sevattijärvi to Ivalo for dinner and overnight accom-modation.

Day 6 Ivalo – LuleåDuring the day we travel through the mountain area of northern Finland, where the country soon starts slooping down to the Gulf of Bothnia instead of the Arctic Ocean. The forest becomes denser, and in Tankavaara, “the Klondyke of the Arctic Area”, we make a stop so you can try your luck with the wash. The journey home continues through Övertorne, where we again meet the Torne Valley. Then we go on towards Luleå, where we board the night-train taking us back to Stockholm with a memorable journey in our luggage.

Fauske has two famous mineral de-posits. The red marble “Norwegian Rose” is exported worldwide and

has been used in the UN headquarters in New York, the Japanese Emperor’s palace and Oslo town hall. The other mineral is copper, produced for more than hundred years, until 1991, at the Sulitjelma mine east of Fauske. There, a mining museum tells the story about the industry and the

mountain settlement that had some 3000 inhabitants around 1920. Sulitjelma still holds the largest known deposit of copper in Norway, and there are plans to open the mine again, as a result of rocketing copper prices. The landscape of Saltdal munici-pality offers dramatic contrasts – from the Salten fjord to the deep Junkerdal ravine with fells above, reaching heights of more than 1500 metres.

The administrative centre Rognan is famous for its boat building tradi-tions, equipping the annual Lofoten

fishing with a fleet of small fishing boats. To-day the wharves are closed, but some enthu-siasts keep the tradition alive. During World War II, the German oc-cupants had nearly ten thousand prisoners of war from Russia, Polen and Serbia to build a road outside of Rognan. Because of the terrible conditions the road was called the Blood Road by the slave workers,. The ”Blood Road” Museum in Rognan is housed in original German barracks from the war.

The real silver in the Silver Museum’s unique collection consists of about 700 Sami objects. It is mostly cos-

tume silver, spoons and drinking-vessels. Oldest are some silver necklaces from the 15th century. The collection is placed in the Silver hall in the basement of the yellow wooden building at the shore of Hornavan, just beside the through route – the one that runs between the Swedish and Norwegian coast and is called the Silver Route.

Old time lifeThe silver and other objects of the museum are such that have been used by old time’s inhabitants in Arjeplog. They are divided into several permanent exhibitions: Mujttalus shows the Sami every day life. Spår tells about life and experiences of an-cient hunters and fishermen. Nybyggarens liv och historia (The life and history of the sett-ler) is told through the dressmaker’s cham-ber, the old classroom and the smallholder’s kitchen of the 1930s.

The Lapland doctorThe Silver Museum is a result of the “Lap-land doctor” Einar Wallquist’s engagement for the area. He started to collect items al-ready in the 20s, and wanted early that the community should form some sort of exhibi-

tion. Not until 1965 the Silver Museum was formed in the building that earlier had been a nomadic school. The visionary Wallquist lived in a house close to the museum. It was there that he wrote his many books, among other things. The doctor’s house is preser-ved as it once was, and it is also open for visitors all through July.

The village at the end of the roadAt the end of the road the village Adolfström is situated. Here come tourists who appre-ciate the beautiful mountain nature, to fish and to take day tours. Along Kungsleden it is 22 kilometers north to Jäkkvik, and 57 ki-lometers south to Ammarnäs. There are only a few resident in the villa-ge, but all let out cottages and boats. Jan & Marianne Thorfve are running Adolfström’s Handelsbod & Stugor, and the family Jo-hansson have both Johanssons Fjällstugor and Fjällflygarna. With helicopter one can fly up onto the mountain and then walk down to Bäverholmens Wärdshus.

From Galtispouda, a hill with a fine view a little outside of the central place one has a marvellous view. With its many lakes and waters the community of Arjeplog glitters almost as silver.

The Silver Museum

Friday and Saturday during summer it is possible to go by train along a part of Inlandsbanan. Between the 6th

of July and the 10th of August Arvidsjaurs Järnvägsförening runs evening tours with steam train from Arvidsjaur to Slagnäs and

back. On the way back the train stops at the shore of Storavan so the passengers can grill sausages, and perhaps take a bath. At the most there have been up to 200 passengers on the tranquil tour through the bright sum-mer evening.

The art of lightening a fire correctly

The old steam engine is from 1915 and the passenger waggons from the 30s and 50s. The art of lightening the fire of the steam engine correctly is the question: it must be enough fire in the boiler before entering the hills and not too much fire on the top of the hills. Try shooting the rapidsIn Piteälven north of Moskosel the enter-prise Outdoor Lapland arranges rapid shoo-ting from the first of July until the middle of August. The trip goes through rapids of class 2 with elements of class 3, on a scale where class 1 is streaming water and class 6 is unnavigable. Participants are equipped with approved wet dresses, life-jackets and helmets, and before starting a qualified gui-de informs about the safety rules in several languages.

Tell the storyThe new museum is located at the old A8 area. It is the old exercise house, the gym and a non-commisioned officer’s building, being connected with glass walls. In the re-constructed building there are a reception, café, shop and museum premises, which the visitors go through along an imagined time axis. The old garison museum will be incor-porated with the new museum, which also have, among other things, mountain walls and a model of Boden’s fort.

Arena for laser gamesIn Harads the Adventure fort has existed for five years. From an old amunition depot inside the mountain some enthusiastic entre-preneurs have created an arena for activities and socialization for primarily entreprises and larger groups. In connection to the fort they are also now starting big game hunting for, among others, South Europeans. The same enthusiasts have also redecora-ted a civil defence establishment from the 70s inside the mountain Sävastklinten and recently opened Area 66 – a laser game are-na.

Into secret fortsThe Defence Museum is the Boden municipality’s latest way of defending itself against the cut-downs within the defence. Previously parts of the military town has changed into tourist attractions. The largest is Rödbergsfortet, the only completely sa-ved and authentically equipped fort in that which once was the famous Boden’s Fort. In the fort in the Rödberget one can recall memories from the military service, enjoy a dinner with North Bothnian delicacies or

Storforsen in the Piteå river lies about 25 miles northwest of central Älvsbyn. It is the largest free waterfall in the

Luleå

The world heritage GammelstadGammelstad is one of Sweden’s 13 world heritages – “an outstanding example of the traditional church village in northern Scan-dinavia”, according to Unesco’s motivation.In this unique culture environment there are, among other things, the stone church from 1492, 408 church cottages and a living church village tradition. - It is part of the heritage, so the greatest challenge it to see to it that the church vil-lage tradition lives one, says Lars Mandahl at Gammelstad’s Visitor Center, where one can see pictures, a historical exhibition. There are cottages for rent at Små-skär and Kluntarna. At Kluntarna and at the archipelago museum on Junkön there will be cottage hosts this summer too. Now it is also possible to go around in the archi-pelago through a couple of hiking ways – one on Kluntarna, and one through Sandön and Hindersön out to Brändöskär.

Nobody will experience anyth-ing but IKEA meaning a lot for Haparanda. Not least a lot of visitors. With the establishment of IKEA , Haparanda has got one of Norrbotten’s absolutely largest tourist attraction. There has been hardly no limit to the enthusiastic comparisons:“The largest thing happening since drawing the border bet-ween Sweden and Finland in 1809”, says one statement.

An estimation is that there will be about 20 – 30

000 people coming every week a good while ahead.

That this will mean a lot for the community and

the whole region is easy to understand.

Many new settlements

At the same time as IKEA was inaugurated, Ikano

opened just nearby, a shopping centre with ten

shops. Both in Haparanda and Tornio more galle-

ries are being built, meant to be connected with a

foot-bridge across the border. The symbolic is evi-

dent: here are the expectations and the possibilities

boundless. Restaurants and houses are also being

built, both for people settling in Haparanda and

for those who want a temporary housing when vi-

siting IKEA. Already !nished is the low-price hotel

Cape East Family Resort with 175 rooms situated

on Sweden’s most eastern point, as well as Norr-

skens Camping, a smaller establishment some ki-

lometers up the border river.

In summer it is the white!sh that attracts people

to Kukkolaforsen in the Torne river, the border ri-

ver against Finland. Many people like to go out and

meet the !shermen. And there often allowed to

bag net, too. At the Kukkola waterfall one can also

visit Sweden´s only sauna museum. It consists of a

great number of di"erent saunas and an exhibition

about the history and cultural importance of the

sauna, not least in the Torne valley.

National park in the sea

Outside the out#ow of the Torne river in the Gulf

of Bothnia lies Haparanda-Sandskär, the center of

Sweden’s easternmost national park. The protec-

ted area includes, among other things, also Seskar-

Furö. At Haparanda-Sandskär awaits a strange

nature experience with many di"erent developed

types of nature. There are sandbeaches as at the

Mediterranean sea, moors, birch groves as in the

mountain area, wet bogs and exuberant #ower

meadows. “An incredable mosaic”, Sta"an Svan-

berg calls it.

During high summer he carries passengers out

with the boat Bosmina.

On the island is a chapel and a remarkable stadium

looking formation where two sand-hills have mer-

ged. Two young boys visiting saw it as a landing-

place for a UFO.

Tornio

Keminmaa is famous for its sal-mon fishing and its big power sta-tion.

The small municipality is strategically situated at

the Kemi river´s out!ow in the Bothnian Gulf,

between the towns of Tornio and Kemi. The

Isohaara power station stands at the mouth

of the Kemijoki river. Downstream from the

big dam is a good place to catch rising salmon,

either from a boat or standing on the shore.

Beside the dam a "sh ladder has been built,

allowing salmon to swim up above the dam.

Through windows one can see them passing

on their way upstream.

An odd attraction is found in the old stone

church of St Michael (1521). Here, the corpse

of vicar Nicolaus Rungius (dead 1629) refuses

to decay.

In the Keminmaa forests you might meet trolls.

Groups can book excursions to the Kallio-

vuori hills.

Tornio is together with sister town Haparanda developing at a fast pace. The establishing of IKEA and other big chain stores on the border has led to a com-mercial boom.

New buildings are growing up like mushrooms,

with construction cranes adding to the city’s sil-

houette. Trading is not new here on the northern

part of the Bothnian Gulf. Tornio was established

in 1621 and became the most important Swedish

trading town in the north, attracting merchants

from the whole Barents Region. After the loss of

Finland in 1809 the town found itself situated

in a Russian Grand Duchy under the Czar, un-

til Finland’s independence in December 1917.

With the EU membership of Finland and Swe-

den in 1995 the border opened up and facilitated

more co-operation in all fields. Today there are

even plans to create a joint city centre on the

national border, something unique in Europe.

The main industry of Tornio is the stainless steel

factory of Outokumpu, one of the main produ-

cers in the world. Another well-known industry

is the brewery Lapin Kulta, quite successful in

exporting a large part of its production. Tornio

has a fine art museum (Aine Museum), together

with a provincial museum close to the border. A

beautiful old Russian church (1884) stands ne-

arby. On the Suensaari hill you will find northern

Finlands oldest wooden church (1686), still in

use. The interior is a masterpiece of wooden

handicraft.

Recommended excursions can be made to the

Kukkolankoski (whitefish caught with traditio-

nal landing net) and Matkakoski rapids (famous

salmon fishing) north of town, and to the archipe-

Kemi promotes itself as the Town of Snow and Sea.

In winter, a big annual Snow Castle is built, with

a new design every year. Further out, icebreaker

Sampo takes tourists out to the frozen archipe-

lago, where they can swim in holes in the ice,

dressed in survival suits.

In summer the harbour is crowded with sailing

yachts and motorboats – the waters of the Both-

nian Bay are popular, with regattas in the archi-

pelago.

From the embankment the chimneys of the woo-

den industries, Metsä Botnia and Stora Enso

can be seen. The embankment also houses a

Gemstone gallery, a souvenir shop and lots of

summer bars and cafés, very popular among the

locals.

Kemi is equipped with a typical Finnish in-

vention, an integrated culture centre with thea-

tre, art museum, library, café and restaurants.

Workers´and Hairdressers´museums plus a his-

torical museum are other attractions.

Kemijärvi, a service centre for east Lapland, is surrounded by water.

Like in other parts of Lapland, tourism is a

growing industry, where nature plays the main

role. The fells of Luosto, Pyhä and Suomo att-

ract many visitors around the year. The Pyhä-

Luosto National Park consists of a thirty-"ve

kilometre long string of fells and deep ravines.

The snowmobile museum of Kemijärvi is com-

pletely specialized in the northern vehicles.

To see some in action, one can visit the 600 ki-

lometre long snowmobile race in March. Heal-

thy services are offered at the local spa centre

with swimming pools, saunas, massage etc.

With deep forests nearby, Kemijärvi’s Interna-

tional Woodcarving Week feels like a natural

arrangment, The results can be seen in the Art

Centre Puustelli and different parks in town.

Being a centre for eastern Lapland, Kemijärvi

has a broad choice of bars and restaurants.

The main processing industry of the municipa-

lity can be viewed from the city centre – Stora

Enso’s cellulose factory stands on the opposite

shore of the Kemijärvi lake.

Five years ago a new interna-tional border station to Russia opened some 25 kilometres east of Salla. From here it’s only a couple of hours car drive down to Kandalaksha at the White Sea.

Today, there are more people using this border

crossing than the northern route Lotta – Raja-

joseppi – Murmansk. More and more Russian

tourists also choose to visit east Lapland.

Tourism in Salla aims at family-friendly skiing

and hiking among the low fells. Peace & tran-

quillity is thus used as a slogan by local tourist

companies. Not far from the centre is a rein-

deer park, also offering safaris, canoeing, gold

washing etc. Nearby the park stands the fell

Sallatunturi, the main ski resort in Salla.

The opening of the border has made it easier

to arrange excursions and safaris on Russian

territory. Snowmobile safaris to the eastern

neighbour are arranged by a company with

the exciting name Kola Extreme. For local dri-

vers the open border also means advantages

– many of them regularly "ll their petrol tanks

with cheap Russian fuel.

Rovaniemi has been very suc-cessful with its tourism industry.

Rovaniemi was established where the two ri-

vers of Ounasjoki and Kemijoki meet. Burnt

to ashes during WWII, the town was rebuilt

and is today a modern and advanced town.

Finland’s most famous architect, Alvar Aalto,

designed the city theatre and library.

In the capital of Lapland, the Arctic is present

in many ways. The University of Lapland has

special Arctic courses and research projects,

like snow sculpting, northern resources, tou-

rism etc, producing useful know-how.

The modern building of Arktikum, an attrac-

tion in itself, with a 172 meter long glass roof

houses the scienti"c Arctic Centre and the

Provincial Museum. Another specialized muse-

um is the outdoor Forest Museum of Lapland,

displaying the history of the important woo-

den industry, with authentic buildings, vehicles

and tools.

There should be no problem to "nd suitable

restaurants and bars in Rovaniemi. The town is

famous for its broad choice of pubs (kapakka).

Summer is the time for music festivals Juta-

jaiset (folk & world music) and Down by the

Kemijoki (rock, pop).

The slogan of Tervola – Lapland Starts Here – is rather accurate.

The municipality has a lush nature with many pos-

sibilities to "sh and hike in the tributaries of Kemi

river. In Finland Tervola is famous for its strong

tradition in handicraft and folklore. Students at

the Art and Crafts College carry the skills for-

ward. Rimpparemmi, one of Finland’s most fa-

mous folk dance and music groups started here

more than thirty years ago, before moving to

Rovaniemi.

Another famous name connected with Tervola is

Paasilinna. After the war, the Paasilinna family was

evacuated from Petsamo at the Arctic Sea and li-

ved in Tervola for many years. Brothers Erno, Rei-

no, Mauri and Arto Paasilinna became writers, the

latter a humorist popular all around the world.

The eastern in!uence can be seen at Varejoki

north of Tervola, where a tsasouna (orthodox

chapel) is open to visitors.

The town is beautifully situated at the inner bay of the White Sea, surrounded by moun-tains. Here the primary road Murmansk – St Petersburg meets the road to Finland and Sweden. Heavy traffic on the Murmansk railroad goes through town. Kandalaksha archipelago was turned into a National Park in 1932, and has more than 200 bird species, together with many land and sea mammals. Further east along the Tersk coast there are old Pomor villages like Kolvitsa, Umba and Varzuga. They are si-tuated at salmon rivers, popular also among foreign sport fishers.

On the mountain slopes many sport compe-titions are held – including mountain bikes, terrain vehicles, sledge, slalom and hiking. The Kandalaksha commune includes Ala-kurtti, a military town 70 kilometres from the Finnish border.

KandalakshaKandalaksha, one of the oldest towns on the Kola Peninsula, has a strong potential for future Wes-tern tourism.

Apatite is used as fertilizer. The town is the second in the Murmansk region with her 70000 inhabitants, and houses the big insti-tution Kola Science Centre, where geologists and other scientists are educated.

Visitors can study minerals in museums and shops, and also join organized geological ex-cursions to the surrounding mountains. The local lore museum has a fine historical exhi-bition. The Stone Flower Exhibition is a fair arranged annually in January and draws many stone artists from Russia and abroad.

Antoher annual event is the Polar Ball, a ballroom dance competition. In 1993 an in-ternational airport opened outside Apatity. Last year the town celebrated its 40th anni-versary.

ApatityApatity has its name from the world’s largest apatite deposits here at the foot of the Khibiny mountains.

Fishing and hunting, as well as picking ber-ries and mushrooms, are popular activities.The town is built around rich iron ore depo-sits. The young town, situated only twenty kilometres from the Finnish border, recei-ved its town status as late as1965. The loca-tion is rather isolated, but inhabitants have made good contacts with sister cities Hapar-anda and Salla. Kovdor has two hotels, four cafés, a culture house, art museum and lo-cal lore museum. Kovdor can be reached by train from the Murmansk railway line, or by car or bus.

KovdorIn Kovdor, situated 120 kilome-tres west of main road M18, na-ture is important to its dwellers.

The town stands at the foot of the Khibiny Mountains, on the shore of lake Bolshoi Vudiavr. Before 1934 it bore the name Khi-binogorsk. The Russian alpine sports-team trains on the slopes, and parts of the Fes-tival of the North are held here. It’s also possible to rent snowmobiles and cruise around in the Khibiny mountains. In 1931, the world’s most northern Botanical garden was founded seven kilometres from Kirovsk. The warm microclimate gives favourable li-ving conditions for rare plants.

KirovskKirovsk is a popular ski resort and the birthplace of apatite mi-ning on the Kola Peninsula.

It’s the youngest and smallest town in the Murmansk region. The name means Polar Dawn. In 1973 the first of four atomic reactors was started here at the shore of Lake Imandra. The eldering plant has recently been given a prolonged life span by Russian authorities. Big investments have been made by the com-pany itself and foreign partners to secure the safety. The town has a vivid sport and cultural life, including a troubadour festi-val.

Polyarnie ZoryThe town Polyarnie Zory was built for the workers at the Kola Nuclear Power Plant some kilo-metres away.

The town is dominated by the big Severonikel smelter, producing nickel metal for domestic use and the world market. It’s the most pol-luted area on the Kola Peninsula. The large amounts of sulphur emissions from the plant has killed the forests for tens of kilometres around, creating a moon landscape. The emissions are diminishing thanks to lower production, but nature will need a long time to recover. The predominant wind direction has left the city centre surprisingly green and flourishing, though. Monchegorsk has a rich cultural and sports life. Lake Imandra attracts sailboating and wind-surfing in summer and sail-skiing in winter. A new church was erected in 1997, stan-ding on a hill overlooking the town. South of Monchegorsk is the Laplandsky national park, with stocks of wild reindeer, bears, wolves, elks, martens, weasels etcetera.

The rich iron ore mine was opened here in the late 1940s. Today the extraction has mo-ved underground. The town’s futuristic square, with its tall metal column, was designed by architects from St Petersburg. The second industry n town, the Olenegorsk Mechanical Plant, was founded in 1971 and produces titanium pipes, crane grabs and pumps. Olenegorsk has around 30000 inhabitants. Ties are strong with its sister cities Pajala, Målselv and Kolari.

OlengorskThe young mining town Olene-gorsk ,“Reindeer Town”, stands close to the M18 main road.

Along the narrow Kola Fjord different fleets have their own harbours: trawlers, mer-chant ships, nuclear powered icebreakers and further out the Northern Fleet with submarines and war ships. They are fenced in, but to get the real sea atmosphere you may visit the maritime passenger terminal behind the railway station.

You get the best view of the town from the hill Zeliony Mys north of the city centre (trolley-buses 3 and 4 stop at Semyonovskoye lake). Just look for the monumental thirty metres high soldier statue “Alyosha”. Close to Alyo-sha is an Oceanarium where seals perform shows during the summer months.

Museum lovers can choose from a broad range of places. The main ones are: the big Historical Museum, the Regional Art Muse-um, the Museum of the Northern Fleet, the Murmansk Shipping Company’s Icebreaker Museum, the Pinro Maritime Museum and the City Exhibition Hall.

The Murmansk port does not freeze in winter, due to the warm Golf Stream. This makes Mur-mansk a strategically very im-portant town in European Rus-sia.

There are three institution theatres in town: the Drama Theatre, the Theatre of the Northern Fleet and the Puppet Theatre. The Philharmonic offers both classical mu-sic and folk music.Shopping is easy in Murmansk. Department stores Volna and Eldorado are situated at the Five Corners Square in the middle of the town. Small shops can be found everywhere, but especially along the main street Lenin Prospect. If you like to bargain you may visit the open markets. Murmansk dwellers like to eat fish. In restaurants there are many different dishes from cod and salmon. In the Russian cuisine soups and salads also play an important role. If you want something exotic you may try one of Murmansk’s Cau-causian restaurants.Nightlife is vivid, with lots of discos, bars and nightclubs. Summer nights are special here at latitude 69 degrees North. With the sun shining the clock around, it can be hard to tell whether it’s day or night.
