the way is opened towards better and better Games BSG Oulu 2015 were the first official Barents Summer Games and the largest event in the 65 years history of Barents Sports. The event was a massive effort for or-ganizers, but the Games were a great success. We want to thank all the athletes, all sports that organized the competitions, all volunteers, the city of Oulu and all our other partners!

Barents Sport Committee began to strive towards a new concept, common Barents Games year 2012. Luleå 2013, Tromso BWG 2014 and now Oulu BSG 2015 sho-wed that selected path has been right.

Now the way is opened towards better and better Games that inspire Barents youth to participate more and more in sport cooperation across the borders.

We wish good luck to following organizers of Barents Ga-mes!

GREETING FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF FINLAND I would like to bid all of the participants welcome to the first fully fledged Barents Summer Games to be held in Finland and Oulu. Young athletes from the Barents Region have gathered to participate in a total of fifteen sporting events, from team games to individual disciplines. This event also demonstrates the power of the Barents Region. Nowadays, over six million people live in the northern reaches of Finland, Norway, Russia and Sweden. The Games are filling the Oulu region with their vibrant colours. In addition to providing an excellent background for sporting endeavours, the event aids the development of culture, sport and other cooperation in the northern region. Besides the athletes, high numbers of voluntary workers have paved the way for the success of these Games. The Games have been made possible by the efforts of organisers from Kalottiurheilu and around 350 volunteers. As well as succeeding, a spirit of fair play and the joy of a successful performance are important in sport. I wish all of the athletes, coaches, volunteers and the audience an excellent and unforgettable time at Barents Summer Games.

Sauli Niinistö President of the Republic of Finland

Barents Games is one of the most important are-nas for people-to-people cooperation in the Bar-ents region. The Norwegian Barents Secretariat is very glad to be a part of it and we are proud that our grants for sports cooperation every year ensure to bring more than 8 000 people together – to share the happiness of sport.

Sharing the Arctic Spirit with over thousand ath-letes in Oulu this weekend has been inspiring for us all, and it has shown the strong ties across borders in the north of Europe.

Thank you for showing us the importance of the Barents Sports Cooperation. What you have ac-complished here in Oulu serve as an exemplary model for other activities in the Barents Region. Many thanks to the Barents Sports Committee and to Oulu Kalottidrott as a host for Barents Games

2015. I am already looking forward to Barents Win-ter Games in Murmansk 2016.

Best, Kim StenersenThe Norwegian Barents Secretariat

The Norwegian Barents Secretariat

Sports brings people together.

Bringing people together is cooperation.

Cooperation is communication.

Communication brings people closer.

Bringing people closer makes understanding.

Understanding makes peace.

Barents sports

We are the largest people-to-people cooperation in Barents and a vibrant carrier of culture in the region. Sport is a model in this work. The ice has melted long ago and the east-west passage is open. History shows that the sport cooperation has been steady regardless of changes in climate.

On behalf of Finnish Golf association we like to thank Oulu Golfkerho for doing great work organizing golf tour-nament in Barents Games. For golf sports it is excellent that golf is part of Barents Games. It gives our sport a great possibility to grow in every part of northern Euro-pe. To develop junior golf work in all northern countries we see it very important to have contacts for other nati-ons, like in this Barents Games tournament.

Sankivaara Golf Center is build in the year 1992. There is 36 holes and one par 3 court.

We strongly believe that, in cooperation with the city of Oulu and our other partners, we have succeeded in organizing an

outstanding event, which will serve as proof of the cooperation within the Barents region – in this instance, most importantly

in the fields of sports and exercise!

Bowling is arranged in Heinäpää Bowling Hall. It has 24 laminated tracks and also 12 billiard tables. There were 47 athletes competing in bowling from Norway, Sweden and Finland.

Barents Sports Committee wishes that the Barents Games

will become the “Olympic games” of the Barents region. We hope that athletes and leaders feel

like they live together in a «Olympic village”.

With projects within most areas of activity in the north, the portfolio of the Norwegian Barents Sec-retariat is impressive. The region was established as a peace project, and with strong memories of the at-mosphere during the Barents Games in Oulu you have all seen that this goal is accomplished.

BUSINESS AS USUALWhile political relations between Russia and Western Europe are on the freezing level, athletes from Rus-sian, Finland, Sweden and Norway have gathered in Oulu for the biggest Barents Games ever. This is the key to the success of the Barents cooperation. When it comes to people-to-people cooperation in the Bar-ents Region it has been business as usual also in the last two years, and we hope it will stay that way no matter what happens on future ministerial meetings.

For the Norwegian Barents Secretariat the aim is to develop good relations across borders in all areas of society. We do this by promoting and funding coop-eration projects. Those who are part of projects like

the Barents Games are given the opportunity to meet people from other parts of the region and gain knowl-edge about their lives. Maybe these “other people” across the border aren´t that different anyway?

One thing is at least the same all over. We all love sports. Out of the around 200 cooperation projects we support every year, sports projects are the most frequent activity in our support list.

An equally important part of the Secretariat’s job is to act as a centre of competence on cross border re-lations. We guide all our project owners both in estab-lishing contact with their partners and help them to develop good projects.

BARENTSOBSERVER.COMYou can find all the information you need about the activities of the Barents Secretariat on our website Barents.no. There you will find both our project cat-alogue and information about other projects and ac-tivities where we participate. Like in the promotion of

Indigenous Peoples activities in the Barents Region or better communication across borders in all of Eastern Europe in the European Border Dialogues project.

A vital part of cooperation is knowledge, and knowl-edge comes through better information. That is why the Norwegian Barents Secretariat run their own news web site called BarentsObserver.com.

BarentsObserver.com is an open internet news ser-vice, which offers daily updated news from and about the Barents Region and the Arctic. The site presents news stories from the northern parts of all the four countries in the region: Russia, Norway, Sweden and Finland. We publish all news stories in English and Russian and in our archive you will find more than 15 000 news articles. A number which just keeps grow-ing. When it comes to covering news from the entire Barents region there is probably now media that can match our product. So please use BarentsObserver.com if you need to know more about what is happen-ing on the other side of your border.

Did you know that 36 000 people participated in a Barents project last year? You are now a part that family, and the Barents Games with more than 1200 athletes is one of the biggest

projects we have supported this year.

Welcome to the Barents family
