Birds and Wildlife in South-East EnglandJohn Buckingham, presenter

An illustrated talk discussing what to see and where and when to go to enjoy lovelycountryside, fascinating birds, beautiful wildflowers, extraordinary insects and secret animals.

We will explore some prolific habitats, including woodland, downland, heaths, wetlands, riversand gardens, in search of some surprisingly large populations of birds, plants and animals

within our small corner of the UK. Our highly seasonal climate and proximity to the Continent, with sometimes early springs, long warm summers, colourful autumns and usually

comparatively mild winter weather, attract migrant birds from all over Europe and Africa, andthese species boost our resident bird populations. We will look at migrant butterflies and rareorchids and intriguing names for some local flowers and wildlife, including Painted Ladies,

Grizzled Skippers, Adonis Blues, Bum Barrels, Godwits, Goat Suckers, Town Hall Clock andParson in the Pulpit.

John Buckingham is a widely-published wildlife photographer and a well-known and prolificlecturer on birds and wildlife. He has worked for many years as a freeelance natural historytutor, teaching for organisations such as the WEA and the Universities of Surrey, Sussex, Kent

and London. He travels widely and organises and leads birdwatching and wildlife toursworldwide and throughout the UK.

Banstead History Research Groupwith the Banstead History Centre present

Banstead Through the AgesHow history shaped the area

Banstead has seen many changes over the years. It began as an isolatedsettlement on the North Downs, with panoramic views to the North across what isnow known as the London Basin and to the South across the rolling hills. After theNorman Conquest it had connections with Royalty who were enthusiastic about its

hunting grounds. Later, as it became more accessible from London, it becamepopular both with wealthy merchants who made their homes there and with

racegoers on their way to and from the Epsom races. Today it is more a town than a village.

The talks will cover the ages of the history of the area. Specifically, they will showhow it developed and grew over the years and how it was affected by national

events. They will range from Prehistoric times to the Romans, from Domesday to theend of Medieval times, and from the Tudor era to the seventeenth to the eighteenthcenturies. After the interval, the nineteenth and twentieth centuries will be covered.

Be prepared to hold onto your seats as you are whisked through more than 4,000years of the history of the local area at the rate of about 44 years a minute!

There will be displays of historical material, a bookstall and a raffle.

Leonardo da Vinci at the Court of MilanLecturer, Shirley Smith

In 1481 Leonardo da Vinci wrote offering his services to Ludovico Sforza, the powerful ruler of Milan. Having listed his expertise in designing war machines, bridges and excavating

equipment, he added that in time of peace he could pass muster as a painter. Fortunately hewas given a chance, for his paintings of The Last Supper, the Virgin of the Rocks and his

stunning portraits of Ludovico's family, mistresses and court are among the most famous works ofart of all time. As a background to the National Gallery's forthcoming exhibition 'Leonardo da

Vinci: Painter at the Court of Milan', this lecture will study these works of Leonardo and how theypushed the boundaries of art to a new level.

Shirley Smith graduated from the University of East Anglia with a first-class degree in the Historyof Art, specialising in Italian and Northern Renaissance Art and Architecture. She is a Fellow of

the Royal Society of Arts, a part-time lecturer at the University of East Anglia, a tutor for theBoard of Continuing Education of Cambridge University courses, and an experienced lecturer
