  • Background When hurricanes make land fall, they destroy many of the Louisiana trees in its path. Swamps trees stand strong in hurricanes, reduce storm surge, and eliminate the waves atop the surge. Southeastern Louisiana University wetland restoration project run by Dr. Gary Shaffer are replanting the areas with these types of tree.

  • Baldcypress and water tupelo Baldcypress and water tupelo swamps are far superior to other wetland habitat types because of its root network.

  • Problem The old process is not efficient: manually transplanting; protecting device and securing it to the ground; disassemble and recycle the protecting device in ~ 5 years; cost of material is too much.
  • Slide 5
  • Fall 2014 Objective To design a pot shelter device that will be able to grow baldcypress and water tupelo seedlings and protect them for five years `in the wetlands. Including designing a planting device to place the nails in place.

  • Fall Semester 2014 Completed September 16 th October 7 th : Start learning how to use SolidWorks October 9 th October 31 st : Designing the Pot Shelter structure with SolidWorks while researching and analyzing the material for it November 4 th November 25 th : Designing the planting device structure with SolidWorks while analyzing the material for it. December 2 nd December 5 th : Finalizing assembly plans for prototype.

  • Planting Device The device includes a handle, three rods, holder, two back plates, and a knob. The device will the planter to plant the trees without getting their hands dirty. The transformer will be place in the holder and the planter will push the knob allowing the rods to push the soil out of the transformer.

  • Spring 2015 Objective The objective is to design a mold casting for each part of the pot shelter and the planting device. To have 3D models of the pot shelter and planting device Including the base crate if there is time.
  • Slide 10
  • Methodology To be successful in completing this design, these steps must be followed and completed. Design the mold casting for Pot shelter and planting device Using Soldworks to structure a 3D mold structure for the Pot shelter and planting device. Uses of COMSOL to analyze the stress of the planting device Make 3D printed models of the Pot shelter and the planting device
