Botha said that based on the evidence, it seems that a Zebra carcass was first laced with poison which killed a first batch of birds and this was followed up a few days later by the remains of a Kudu cow that was also poisoned and that killed the remainder of the birds. The latter carcass was also cut up and parts of it were placed in the trees, apparently a deliberate attempt to poison birds’ rather mammalian scavengers. ‘We did find signs of mammalian scavenging on some of the older carcasses, so it is likely that jackal and or hyena could also have been poisoned. A report of a dying jackal showing classic symptoms of poisoning was received from a neighbouring farm early last Friday. Samples for toxicological and other analysis were collected from a number of carcasses. It is likely that a carbamate-based chemical was used to kill the birds. The scene of the crime was properly cleaned up and sterilised to prevent further poisoning of birds and other wildlife. All remains of the killed birds and poisoned carcasses and baits that were found were burned. Botha said that the killing of vultures is worrying as it is an endangered species and plays an important role in fighting animal diseases. Search on for vulture killerSCORES of endagered vulture were poisoend in the Hoedspruit area over the past week.

According to Andre Botha of the Endangered Wildlife Trust‘s Birds of Prey Programme, incidents like these has not been seen in the area in a while now and they suspect that the 65 birds were killed intentionally.

‘During our assessment of the scene, it was obvious that the poisoning was associated with poaching activities as the team recovered many wire-snares and found what appeared to be a camp where poachers spent some time killing animals,’ said Botha.

Botha said that based on the evidence, it seems that a Zebra carcass was fi rst laced with poison which killed a fi rst batch of birds and this was followed up a few days later by the remains of a Kudu cow that was also poisoned and that killed the remainder of the birds. The latter carcass was also cut up and parts of it were placed in the trees, apparently a deliberate attempt to poison birds’ rather mammalian scavengers.

‘We did fi nd signs of mammalian scavenging on some of the older carcasses, so it is likely that jackal and or hyena could also have been poisoned.

Botha said that the killing of vultures is worrying as it is an endangered species and plays an important role in fi ghting animal diseases. Botha urges the farms and reserve owners to contact their team if they come across similar incidents or him on 082 962 5725 or email him on [email protected].

Nonyane said in Acornhoek alone there are more than fi ve social workers who can assist those who have problems. Resident can go for help in the following places where they can receive free counselling; Police station, Tintswalo Hospital, Acornhoek Municipality, Marriam Mogakane Hall, Casteel MPCT, and Cottondale Clinic.

Woman raped at homeACORNHOEK police are investigating a case of rape after a 19-year-old woman was raped last Saturday night while she was asleep in the same house with her mother and friend.ACCORDING to Acornhoek police spokesperson, Lieutenant Mpho Nonyane, the victim went to sleep around 20:30 and later at the middle of the night she woke up and went to the kitchen to get some food. ‘The victim ate her food in the kitchen and after fi nishing she went back to sleep. While she was sleeping she felt someone touching her,’ said Nonyane.

When she tried to scream the unknown suspect held her mouth and threatened her with a knife. The suspect raped and assaulted her before fl eeing into the dark. It is not known how the suspect gained entry but he

went out through the kitchen door.Anyone with information can contact

Acornhoek police branch Commander, Lieutenant Colonel John Mbambo on 082 469 1031. Nonyane said that they have notice that a lot of women are raped in daily basis in the area and she urged women to make sure that their doors are locked before going to sleep. ‘Some of the victims are found in taverns or on their way back from taverns. People must make sure they walk in a group rather than alone as they are easy prey for rapists,’ said Nonyane.

Rates policy now openTHE rates policy and by-law for the Maruleng local municipality is now open for discussion.

The chairperson of the Hoedspruit Chamber of Commerce (HCC), Sarah Bergs said that residents of the Maruleng Municipality must take note that the Maruleng Municipality is awaiting input, comments and remarks on the “Maruleng Draft Rates Policy for 2015/16” and the “Notice on Draft Rates Policy and Levying Rates”.

The Notice states: “Notice is hereby given in terms of section 4 (read with Section 3,5,6) and section 14 of Local Government: Municipal Property Rates Act, 2004 (Act No. 6 of 2004), that a draft Rates Policy 2015-2016 and the By-Law are available for public comment and that the Council had on its ordinary meeting held on the 31 March 2015, passed a resolution on levying of rates.”

Bergs said that it is very important that residents must make sure that they are aware of the increase in the rates for the next fi nancial year and must submit comments before the deadline.

The Notice calls upon all citizens and organizations to critically comment on the Draft Rates Policy and By-Law. Submissions are open until 22 May 2015.

The documents are available at the HCC or at the Hoedspruit Municipal Offi ces and Municipal Library at 65 Springbok Street, Maruleng Testing station and on

the municipal website www.maruleng.gov.za. For enquiries you can contact Kedibone Sithole at 015 – 793 2409.

The Notice states that the public can make comments up to 22 May 2015. Comments must be directed at the Municipal Manager PO Box 627, Hoedspruit 1380 or at the Municipal Offi ces.

Bergs said that the HCC will arrange free training on the Local Government: Municipal Property Rates Act, 2004 (Act No. 6 of 2004) if there is a need from the community.

The HCC urges all members of the HCC but also residents in the Maruleng Municipal area to make use of this opportunity to submit comments because the By-Law, Rates Policy and proposed rates will infl uence each and every ratepayer, said Bergs

TWELVE people were arrested during the road block and stop and search that were conducted by Acornhoek police in the Orpen road which separate Mpumalanga and Limpopo province last Friday morning.

The road block was led by the Acornhoek

police station Commander, Colonel Benson Mphahlela, and it was followed by patrols in the area. According to Acornhoek police spokesperson, Constable Mpho Nonyane, during the road block police managed to arrest eight people for possession of dagga.

‘The road blocks will be conducted every now and then in an attempt to keep the area crime free. We will not only block on Friday but will use any day to prevent the criminals from knowing when we are going to strike and arrest them,’ said Nonyane.

After the stop and search the police took the streets of Acornhoek where they managed to arrest further four people. Two were arrested for public drinking, one for selling liquor without a license and another one for brewing concoction.

ACORNHOEK police are urging people who are using money market not to allow strangers to offer them help as the police have received several complaints about common robbery and fraud that are happening in Mega City.

According to Acornhoek Police spokesperson, Constable Mpho Nonyane, the police have received several complaints but no suspect have ever been caught as those who are conned realised they have been scammed after the suspects left. ‘Most of the cases that are reported about the money market scam all claim a woman offered to help them skip the line or offer to go and take the money for them as they have

connections,’ said Nonyane. The victims seem to believe everything

they are told as they want to skip waiting a long queue for money market. But each time the suspects come back with excuses why they couldn’t manage to get the money of the victim. One of the excuses is that the person that was supposes to help her is on lunch and they give their victims their particulars.

After a while the suspect will make an excuse to leave before their victim goes in the shop. ‘The victims fi nd out the money has been withdrawn from their account. And by that time the suspect is nowhere to be found,’ said Nonyane. She urged people to avoid giving people their personal particulars.

Do not accept strangers help

Twelve suspects arrested during road block by Acornhoek police

ACORNHOEK police are investigating a case of murder and an inquest after a couple lost their lives during a fi re in the girlfriend’s room last Saturday morning.

According to Acornhoek police spokesperson, Lieutenant Mpho Nonyane, the 23-year-old Mapulaneng FET learner who is staying outside campus was burnt to death by her boyfriend. ‘It is alleged that the boyfriend arrived at the rented place of the deceased in the morning and proceeded straight to her room,’ said Nonyane.

Nonyane said that the residents heard a loud bang coming from the room followed

by the burning boyfriend who ran out of the room covered in fl ames. He threw himself on the ground in bid to extinguish the fi re that was burning him. Some residents at the rented place helped put out the fi re and he was taken to Tintswalo Hospital by an ambulance.

‘It is alleged that he then confessed while in hospital that he burnt the room and his girlfriend was still inside the burning room,’ said Nonyane. The girlfriend Netta Sibiya (23) died in the room and the boyfriend Sipho Ngobeni (26) died in hospital around 18:00 from his wounds.
