The Town of Wickenburg has partnered with Maricopa County and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) to promote assistance programs for low-income residents affected by recent flooding. The Maricopa County Home Improvement Program (MCHIP) assists residents by providing funds for rehabilitation of owner-occupied homes. The program can be accessed for emergency repairs as well as major and minor rehabilitation services. Homeowners must qualify for assistance under United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) income guide-lines. Generally, combined household income must be at or below 80% of the Area Median Income. The MCHIP application form and a table illustrating income guidelines are available at http://www.hsd.maricopa.gov/Divisions/Community-Development/Housing-Programs/Home-Improvement-Assistance.aspx. Residents may also contact the County at (602) 506-5911.The USDA Section 504 Grant Program similarly aids very-low-income residents through funding for repairs or improvements that remove health and safety hazards. Qualifying homes must be owner-occupied, modest, and located in a rural area. The maximum grant award is $7,500.The USDA conducts personal visits with all applicants to inspect the sever-ity of the hazard. The Town has provided a list of flood-affected structures to USDA, which will mail the application form directly to homeowners. Both programs frequently have waiting lists and funding limitations. Residents should apply as soon as possible to expedite review of their applications.Flood-affected residents who need assistance completing the applica-tions, or who have not received the USDA application by mail within the next several weeks, should contact the Town’s Community Development & Neighborhood Services Director, Steve Boyle, at (928) 668-0512 or [email protected].

Wickenburg is one of the best places in Arizona to start a busi-ness, according to a study released July 6 by financial literacy website NerdWallet. The community ranked third out of 65 locations evaluated throughout the state. The rankings were calculated using data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey for areas with a population of at least 5,000. Each location’s “business climate” accounted for 65% of the score, which included metrics such as average business revenue, percentage of businesses with paid employees, and number of busi-nesses per 100 residents. “Local economic health” accounted for the remaining 35% of the score and included metrics such as median annual income, median annual housing costs, and unemployment rate. Wickenburg’s overall scored placed it just behind Tolleson and Sedona and just ahead of Prescott and Scottsdale, which comprised the top five. NerdWallet’s assessment of Wickenburg praised its strong mix of tourism, healthcare, and manufacturing sectors. The study specifi-cally cited local guest ranches, the historic downtown, and world-class addiction treatment centers as major drivers of local economic activity. “It’s a huge honor to be recognized as an outstanding business destination,” commented Town Manager Josh Wright. “A strong local economy is essential for the community’s sustainability, and many individuals and organizations have worked hard to create an atmo-sphere conducive to businesses’ success.” NerdWallet is an internet-based corporation offering education, information, and consumer-driven advice regarding personal finances. The company’s full study is available at https://www.nerdwallet.com/blog/small-business/places-to-start-a-business-in-arizona/.

FOR YOUR INFORMATION

Beginning in the summer of 2015 and through the spring of 2016, advance letters for the MAG Household Travel Survey will arrive at randomly selected households asking residents to go online and answer survey questions. Respon dents will be offered a choice between different survey methods, including a specially-designed GPS device and a smart phone application. The use of a smartphone application to collect household travel information will be the first of its kind in the nation and will reduce the burden on respondents while increasing the accu-racy of the information received. “About one in 200 Valley households will be surveyed,” said MAG Transportation Policy Committee Chair Jack Sellers, Councilmember of Chandler. “Each selected household will repre sent hundreds of other households in the area, so par-ticipation, while completely voluntary, is very important for the overall success of the survey.” Residents wishing to learn more about the survey may visit the MAG website at www.azmag.gov.

WHS Internship Program Wickenburg High School

is offering internship opportunities this year to juniors and seniors. Starting this month, August 2015, any student that is a junior or senior can sign up to do an internship with a business or service organization. The internship can be paid or unpaid. WHS Staff has made the enrollment process as easy as possible for both the students and employers.

The requirement for students is simply that they complete at least 90 hours each semester to earn their credit. Initially, businesses or service organiza-tions can talk directly to a student they are interested in having as an intern or they can e-mail a description of the internship and WHS Counselors will post it on the job board. If kids are interested in any internship listed on the job board, they will contact the business directly and if a good fit is found, they will bring a one page paper to the business to have signed to confirm the placement.

Students can work an hour a day five days a week or if the business would rather they come five hours on Saturday, any variation would be fine as long as the student completes the 90 hours in a semester and the student and busi-ness are in agreement on the hours required. If you are interested in having a student intern at your business or service organization, please call or e-mail Rachel Willis. Wickenburg High School, (928) [email protected]

Send a brief description of the internship including the following details: Name of the business or organization: Name of the person students should contact: Phone #: E-mail:, Hours Needed Brief description of what you would want/expect the student to do
