The Wickenburg Leadership Institute is a higher learning program that encompasses topics including Education, Environment, Health, Transportation, Government, Public Safety, Community and Economic Development and Arts and Culture in a total of 8 weeks with the purpose of educating and creat-ing future leaders for the Wickenburg area. Participants are also expected to complete a graduation project that benefits the community. The Wickenburg Leadership Institute graduation was held at Rancho de los Caballeros Golf Club with speakers Darcy Renfro Senior Director, of The Arizona We Want and Vice Mayor Royce Kardinal. Graduates of the program include: Annette Roberts, Patti Jares Slattery, Matt Egan, Kevin Mallicoat, Valerie Shumway, Jessica Solper, Peter Stachowicz, and Brenda Hershkowitz. GENEROSITY – Giving a Present with a Future to Local Organizations

Our participation with the Arizona Office of Tourism co-op media placement in Canada saw in the first week 800 requests for Destination Wickenburg information. We’ve developed a large postcard with tourism information to mail, listing websites and download app for more details on visiting. Chamber staff is working with Up Agency PR to include online blogging about visiting our community, and interviews with local restaurant owners.Filming in Wickenburg concluded last week over three days at Rancho de los Caballeros with Warner Bros. – Germany for The Bachelor television program. Great publicity for the ranch and our community when the show debuts in January in Germany!Additional winter advertising and editorials this month and in January include: Western Horseman Magazine, Horseman Review-Canada, True West Magazine, Phoenix Magazine, City Guide, Valley Guide Quarterly, and Sunset Magazine. And finally, a freelance writer assigned through Arizona Office of Tourism, has written a story on visiting Wickenburg. The article appears on our tourism website and is pushed online through our tourism grant with Madden Publishing. Results will be sent in January.

If proposed changes to overtime are implemented as written, anyone who earns under $24.25 per hour, $970 per week, or $50,440 annually must be covered by overtime.

The administration’s changes in overtime rules will affect over 5 million workers and their employers. Companies must be aware of these rules in order to comment on them, or at the very least, to understand the impact these changes will make on their bottom line. The old rules allowed businesses to assign management respon-sibilities to employees converting them to “exempt” employees. The new rules change all that. Of further impact, the new cut-off point is based on national wage levels, so it can increase in the future. NOW is the time for companies to look at the impact the rules will have on their businesses. If you have workers that are affected, you have two choices:Pay them 1.5x pay for every hour over 40 in a weekReduce their hours to 40 per weekThe rules are expected to be finalized by the end of the year and, as cur-rently proposed, will go into effect in 2016. States also have labor stan-dards. Businesses must comply with the higher of either the state or the federal rules. The single greatest driver of change to the community of Wickenburg is the proposed Interstate 11. This infrastruc-ture corridor could package energy, freight, and tourists into a single align-ment that moves them around and through the landscape near this historic town. Change does not have to be bad, and in order to position the community to influence the I-11 project to respond to the needs of businesses and resi-dents, the Sonoran Institute is launch-ing an innovative new project that will prepare the community to make the most of this opportunity. Over the next year, the Sonoran Institute will collabo-rate with the Wickenburg Chamber and the Town of Wickenburg to inte-grate the values of the community into a focused planning process that will allow the Interstate 11 to better reflect the needs and values of Wickenburg.This project, titled “Positioning

Wickenburg” will focus on three areas that are likely to see change as a result of the new I-11 corridor. These include: rural areas around the Vulture Mountains, the “downtown district”, and the future growth area to the west of the airport. Sonoran Institute will facilitate community-led explorations into these three areas to understand how they respond to com-munity values, and to better articulate how the I-11 can be developed in a way that is responsive and respectful to community needs. Expected outcomes include recommendations involving topics around land use, transportation, design, conservation, and historic pres-ervation among others.The project is expected to span over a year. More information will be pro-vided to the community at a launching event in February, 2016.

Please join us on Saturday, January 9, 2016 for our Annual Awards Dinner held at the Wickenburg Community Center with a no-host bar cocktails at 6:00 p.m. and dinner at 7:00 p.m. The dinner includes highlights from 2015, special recognition and awards to community leaders and organiza-tions. Cost remains the same as in previous years, $45 per person. Tables of 8 or 10 may be reserved in advance. Our menu selection will be emailed and mailed out to members this month, along with registration available online. 85th Annual Chamber Awards Dinner

Tax payers may contribute to all three, as long as they do not exceed their limit. Community needs are met through a program where people can elect to give up to $400 per couple to the CAP office, or Habitat for Humanity. They can make that election any time up to the end of the year (December 31) and take that same amount off their state tax bill when the re-turn is filed. Contact: Charlie Petersen, Executive Director – CAP Office 684-7894 www.fsl.org In the case of the public school, couples can take up to $400, give that money for a specific school or extra-curricular activity, and reduce the state tax payment in the same way. (The limit for singles is $200). That payment may be made up until

the date the tax return is filed on or be-fore April 15. Many activities are planned for this month, along with our 20th Annual Christmas parade of Lights on Friday, Dec. 11 at 6:30 p.m. The parade usually has 30 – 40 entries and features electric vehicles from Arizona Public Service, and the Congress Fire Dept. who is charge of transporting our parade grand marshals, Santa and Mrs. Claus. Before the parade, enjoy shopping, dining, and visiting the Wickenburg Christian Academy’s Live Nativity starting at 5:00 p.m., located at 260 W. Yavapai Street. The parade will start on Yavapai Street, head into the historic district, pass in front of The Chamber and end at the Little Red School House in the Bashas’ Frontier Center. Visit with Santa, enjoy refreshments pre-pared by members of the Wickenburg Children’s Cultural Organization, and learn who will receive the parade awards at the presentation immediately following the parade.
