Until 11 November, Journey to the Deep 2012 For six weeks, The Six Pack at Wynyard Quarter will play home to an array of marine life as guests are taken through the 40 minute educational experience. All traffi c turning right should give way to a vehicle coming from the opposite direction and turning left. This applies at cross roads, T-intersections and driveways where both vehicles are facing each other. New Zealand law requires all the occupants of a car to wear a seatbelt at all times while mobile. It is illegal to use a mobile phone while driving unless it’s ‘hands-free’. At roundabouts, always keep left and give way to all traffi c on your right. The speed limit on the open road is 100km/h and 50km/h in residential areas unless otherwise marked. The New Zealand Police enforce all traffi c laws, including the speed limit and dealing with accidents. All accidents must be reported to the police within 24 hours. Dial *555 on cell phones for non-emergency accidents. Obtain the driver’s name and address and vehicle registration number.

Tips for Safe Driving• Speed cameras are in use on New Zealand roads – take care

not to exceed the signed speed limits as fi nes can be heavy, not forgetting the safety factor.

• If you notice traffi c building up behind you, pull over at a rest area to let it pass. Be extra careful when rejoining traffi c.

• Winding roads, diffi cult terrain and adverse weather conditions will slow you down, so allow plenty of time to reach your destination. Comfortable driving distances in a day are 200-300km, but less if you want to stop and enjoy attractions.

• Ensure you are at least two seconds behind the vehicle in front.• Ringing bells and fl ashing red lights at a railway crossing signal

that a train is coming. Many railway crossings are not controlled by barrier arms. Look out for the distinctive X-shaped railway crossing signs, and take extra care.

Driving in NZ 85

The Auckland International and Domestic Airport lies about 21km south-west of the Auckland CBD at the edge of the Manukau Harbour in Mangere.

Airport TransportTravel options to and from Auckland Airport (phone 275 0789) include taxi, shuttle bus and The Airbus, as well as rental vehicles (see page 79-84) which may be picked up/dropped off at the airport or nearby. From central Auckland, taxis take about 30 minutes (allow an hour at peak times) and cost from $50-$65. Shuttle buses cost less (about $30 per person but less for a group) and take longer, as they pick up and drop off en route. The Airbus (freephone 0800 10 30 80, www.airbus.co.nz) runs every 15 minutes throughout the day, stopping close to most major hotels and backpackers. An adult fare costs $16 one way and $26 return. Driving To/From Auckland AirportFrom the AirportTake the main exit road (George Bolt Memorial Drive) to the intersection with SH20. Follow the signs for Auckland City which will take you onto the motorway. Leave the motorway, turn right into Queenstown Road and continue straight ahead through the roundabout into Pah Road, which becomes Manukau Road. Continue up Manukau Road, turn left at the traffi c lights into Alpers Avenue. At the end of Alpers Avenue, turn right into Gillies Avenue and join the motorway to the city, northern and western suburbs. The last exit to the city is Nelson Street (the left-hand lane).

From the CityOn the southern motorway, take the Gillies Avenue exit. Turn right into Gillies Avenue then left at the lights into Owens Road. At the end of the road, turn right into Manukau Road (SH12) and follow the route to the airport, signposted with a white aeroplane on a blue square.
