ATF Mission

• A unique law enforcement agency in the United States Department of Justice that protects our communities from violent criminals, criminal organizations, the illegal use and trafficking of firearms, the illegal use and storage of explosives, acts of arson and bombings, acts of terrorism, and the illegal diversion of alcohol and tobacco products

• We partner with communities, industries, law enforcement, and public safety agencies to safeguard the public we serve through information sharing, training, research, and use of technology

Some History – Changing with the times…

• ATF traces its roots back to over 200 years of American history

• The National Firearms Act in 1934 gave the agency taxation, regulatory and criminal enforcement responsibilities for firearms

• Legislation in 1968 expanded firearms controls

• Legislation in 1970, 1982, and 2002 gave ATF expanded jurisdiction in explosives and arson cases

• ATF’s mission with respect to terrorism has evolved in the aftermath of 9/11

• Moved from Department of the Treasury to Department of Justice in 2003 (Homeland Security Act)

ATF Strategic Plan: PrioritiesReduce violent firearms crimes by strengthening firearms trafficking intelligence gathering, analysis, inspection, and investigative activity

Make our communities safer by expanding our efforts to identify, target, and dismantle those criminal gangs and organizations that utilize firearms, arson, and explosives in furtherance of violent criminal activity

Advance domestic and international explosives expertise to prevent, detect, and investigate acts of violent crime and terrorism and to enhance public safety

Advance the science of fire investigation globally, by setting and delivering the highest standards in response, research, information sharing and training

Modernize business processes and systems for improved information sharing, knowledge management, and use of innovative technologies to support ATF’s critical mission

Attract, develop, and retain an expert workforce to execute the ATF mission in the emerging business environment
